Rob: Hey everybody, Rob here at etrailer.com, and today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter Wiring Kit on our 2016 Volkswagen GTI.Now, our Curt wiring is going to provide us with a four-pole flat trailer connector so we have all the required lights to get down the road safely, like our tail lights, our turn signals and our stoplights. Now it does come with a dust cover, which is nice to keep all that dirt and debris out of the connector. However, our wiring is meant to stay on the inside until we're ready to use it. You can see I have my wiring draped out the back of the hatch, and if we open it up, our wiring can easily store right underneath by our spare tire. Now, I know a lot of people are worried about the wiring getting damaged, but you can see there's plenty of cushion on that weatherstripping there. The wire's not going to get damaged even over time.
So long as we stay away from the actual latch mechanism itself, it's perfectly fine to have the wire come down, and again, it helps protect it because it's going to be inside away from the elements when we're not using it.So we are going to have to get into the wiring behind our tail lights here and tap into the circuits we need. However, because of the kind of wiring or Volkswagen has, we're only tapping into one factory wire. But after we get everything hooked up back here, we will need to run a power wire up to the battery so that our converter box on our wiring has power and we're not overloading our circuits. Now I know some customers may be a little bit nervous about cutting and splicing into their factory wiring, but it really isn't a complicated setup, and we'll make sure that we show you how and where to test everything. That way we can identify the proper wires that we need to tap into.
In fact, let's go and walk through the installation together so you can know where those wires are located and which ones do what function. To begin our installation, we want to open up the rear hatch. We actually need to remove the floor coverings. We'll lift up. We can pull the floor coverings out and set them aside for right now. Next, we need to me to pull up the rear threshold here, so you want to grab on the bottom.
We're going to lift up. it's just clips going around, along the back side, and once you have a little bit of it up, we can start working our way across. And we'll set this panel aside as well.So if we move to the outer edge, right here in this corner, there's a recessed spot for this side panel and there's actually a Torx screw holding in place. We have a T25 Torx bit and we'll pull that screw out. There is one on the other side, so we'll pull that one as well.
If we move forward right where we have that cargo cover that usually sits right about here, we're going to have another screw right inside this tube. So, again, we'll take our Torx bit and we'll pull that screw out. Again, there is one on the other side that we need to remove as well. Here at the bottom in this corner area, going to lift up on this plastic panel, just kind of sits in this little cubby here. We want to get everything out of the way, and we want to start pulling this panel back. We don't need to completely remove it. We just want to pull this plastic piece back so we can pull the carpet back. I like to start at the bottom, kind of work that panel loose. Again, there's just some clips on here and this should be plenty of room so we can get back here. We can remove these two push pins that are underneath that panel so we can pull the carpet back. A trim panel tool is probably the easiest to use and you just get underneath the carpet, underneath the push pin, just kind of start working it out until it pops out. That'll allow us to peel the carpet back, and we can find the wiring that's going directly to our tail light. So went ahead and removed the tape from the wires, so we get a little bit better access to them. Now I'm going to take my circuit tester. Since we have a factory ground here, I'll hook it there and I'm going to be back probing into the circuit, so I don't have to damage the wires to test them. I'm going to be looking for a signal. Currently, I have my left turn signal on, but no other function. You don't want to have your tail lights and your turn signals on. We want to isolate each signal when we test.So I'll come in from behind the connector. I'm going to be testing each one of these wires to see which one's giving me a signal. We can see that the black wire with the red stripe on it is giving me my left turn signal. I'm goi

Is it the same for a 2023?
