That's a really nice knife and such a treat to see someone useing a file properly instead of the usual scrubbing action, treating your tools properly pays dividends as proved by the way your plane cut effortlessly.
@@imadethischannel I was also thinking this as I'm also left-handed and watched when you were using it, and it definitely looks bang on the side of the steel rule you used.
Traditionally Marking Knives are sharpened on one one side. This allows a strait cut against a square, rather like a cutting gauge instead of a marking gauge.

@@imadethischannel My comment should be seen in general, no more or less than that. It really has become a beautiful knife, you don't often see them like that.
I can just hear Paul Sellers voice “into the nick. The knife wall just makes everything so accurate.” Nice knife for sure I’ll have to make myself one so I can mark far more accurately than I can currently build in wood.
The blade will also be much too hard to sharpen if untempered. Cutting tools do not have to be maximum hardness possible. People seem to think harder is better when in fact that is just not the case.
Thank you very much for sharing this. Nice design and realization. I'm a bit surprised you beveled both sides of the blade (I'm more used to have one flat side).
I was thinking too if one side completely flat didnt make more sense as well. However, I use both my hands a lot for most tasks, I wouldnt know which side to make flat :D
Good work, but the marking knife should have a bevel on one side, so it is flush with a ruler or anything you mark against, this way, you can be imprecise depending on the angle you mark in or depending on the height of the piece you mark against.
Hey, I think that is not necessarily the case. This knife has wide, flat bevels on both sides and no micro-bevel. This way, it can be but flat against the work on both sides and score lines directly at the edge of a piece.
Very nice and built with meticulous work and thought. In my opinion you are both correct a single flat grind does potentially lead to greater accuracy however it is relegated to an individual right or left handed worker. A traditional Scandy grind is ambidextrous, therefor can be used by left and right handed craftsperson.
Should have ground the bevel on one side only. The flat side runs against what ever your using as a guide. Thus you won't have trouble keeping your line straight....just check out Rob Cosman's UA-cam channel and type in Marking Knife in the search window.....
You should've counter sunk the holes in the wood for pins to have a space to flow in. Yours seem a bit too thin but I guess you won't put too much pressure on them so they'll probably stay
Hey, I think it is fine. The more you countersink the more you have to peen the pins which puts more stress on the wood. The scales are quite thin and I didn‘t want to break them.
@@imadethischannel yes but you're probably file it a lot to not jab your hands with it and it would've been better if they were somewhat flush with food so something would hold it but again the pins are barely necessary. Peice of tape would've been enough to hold it

Thanks for watching! I‘m glad the people appreciate manual labour. But I do think scrub filing has it‘s place as well :)
You made a nice knife but a marking knife has a bevel on one side only ,im left handed so I've always made my own
Well, if you have no secondary bevel, you essentially have a merge flat area on both sides.
@@imadethischannel I was also thinking this as I'm also left-handed and watched when you were using it, and it definitely looks bang on the side of the steel rule you used.
I am totally doing this. Thanks! Looks like a Stanley No. 78 plane iron.
Yes, go for it! I have no idea what iron it was. I found it in a junk box somewhere.
i need that fast cutting through everything saw^^ nice build
I had no idea you could make a cool knife with minimal tools! I've been watching too much Forged in Fire 🔥
Using the wood block to make your bevel is absolutely genius just saying
Traditionally Marking Knives are sharpened on one one side. This allows a strait cut against a square, rather like a cutting gauge instead of a marking gauge.
This knife has a large bevel without a secondary phase. So it can be registered against the work on both side.

Excellent workmanship.
Everyting is shown BIG in this video. Good pro video. Subscribed!
Thanks! Glad you appreciate the production.
Beautiful and Elegant!
Good job and a bloody good file you´ve got!
For a smoother result, it is better to use sandpaper with water. The scratches will then be less noticeable.
Yes, but it‘s also messier. Especially around wood it can cause mean stains. I guess it‘s a matter of taste.

THAT is slick as hell, I gotta try this!
Very well done. I hope I can find a blade like that this summer! 🙏 I thought you made a right blade, but it turned out so well! Columbus Michigan 🇺🇸
Thanks! You don’t have to wait for a blade logs je this. You can also just use a small strip of 1095 steel or something like that.
Superbe idée. Superbe travail. Merci beaucoup.
Lovely job. I'd like to know if it can be used without tempering, so that it is harder. Thank you for sharing
Well, if you make it too hard, it becomes brittle. Un-tempered carbon steel can shatter when you drop it.
The blade will also be much too hard to sharpen if untempered. Cutting tools do not have to be maximum hardness possible. People seem to think harder is better when in fact that is just not the case.
Отличная работа. Попытаюсь повторить.
esta puesta toda tu personalidad ahí. gran cuchillo.

Tastefully edited, thank you
Beautiful work. I'm inspired!
Thanks, good to hear!
Good work sir. I can not even cut the huge parts as well as you did to thin and small parts 😊👏👏👏
На коленке так сказать и классный ножик получился!!! 👍👍👍
Wouldn't it be a good idea to bevel just one side and leave the other side full flat?
Really awesome and neat job though.
It has a large flat in each side so it can be used on both sides. Thanks for watching!
About 20 years ago I bought an xacto knife bit the handle is plastic and the blade is thin. I think this is a nice replacement.
Replacement is the wrong word, upgrade is a better word choice.
Great work! And I learned just enough to do this for myself as well. TY!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
If your going to use an old plane iron you'll need to soften the cutting edge. It's simple, just go on the web......
Perfect job! Joy to the eye!

I made a marking knife with that exact kirutsuke blade style not long ago!

A nice marking pen looks comfortable BTW it's possible that you make a pen for marking on iron copper bras or aluminium ?
Thanks! Yes, it’s possible. I think it would be called a scribe and the tip has to be very hard.

6:10 you know it is a good fit when the wood bleeds.

@@imadethischannelcorrect, you only have to tilt the blade away from the guide. However, sometimes this can cause the edge to wander a bit.

4:17 you touched the blade with magnet 🧲 ?? Or you touch it with the piece of metal??
It’s a magnet. I used it to check if the blade is hot enough for quenching.
J'ai adoré ! 👏👏
A good work
Why grind from other side?
Thanks! I like symmetrical marking knives because they work equally well for both sides.
Very nice knife. I might have to try that.
Can you say more about the type of file you're using. I appears to be really heavy duty
I like to use relatively large files with medium coarse cut to remove a lot of material.
SUPER CONCEPT ! ! !
Thanks!

Beautiful build. Personally I would have only put a bevel on one side to make marking flush easier.
Good skandi. And why not glue for the handle? Congrats

That is a very popular discussion. If you grind a large, flat bevel on both sides, you can put the knife flat against the work on both sides.
Very nice
