As a teacher of metalwork I give 10 out of 10 for this project, an excellent demonstration of techniques with an end result to be proud of. Only one small observation, always use a brush, not your fingers to remove metal filings from your workpiece, this will prevent painful metal splinters,
I am currently in the same challenge as you, because the prices of one router plane can cost 1250 dollars here in Brazil. Yours router pane is incredible. Your work is magnificent. The design is very clean. congratulations . yours router plane is the best home made in the world.
FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! IVE made a router from wood before. Now that im into metal work, i think im going to give this a shot. Thanks for the inspiration
Bright, real, brilliant, awesome. Don´t ever look back, my friend... And don´t even care about possible negative comments...Because of you, that´s why so many people in this planet became sharp and wise about what they expecting from their futures... providing that they want to follow your steps...as simple as that... And your "excuses" are very welcome, regarding people who don´t know the "how to"...But let´s face it, life it´s only hard for the ones who are soft...regarding my opinion, you are showing me the other way to do the job, and that´s enough for me ...You are a champ, that´s wht you are , and you have all my sincere respects, because I can see a good person , by the way thigs come to "light" as you did...God bless you.
When bending steel you should warm it properly to at least red hot because steel is fragile in 300-400°C. So don't be a "smith of cold steel". Anyway, nice design and well executed using just basic tools. You know how to use file which is quite rare these days
Amazing work coming from the most common of tools. I damn near forgot they even made hacksaws these days with everyone using the grinders !! Nicely done...
Really easy to make different sizes now. That's not an incredibly hard tool to make but man u are probably the most patient individual I know of. All that filing with hardly any power tools is something u don't see today. Nice work
Nice! I made one with a brass body and allen key as a cutter. I tried wood first, but wasn't happy with it, so made a second body using brass. Might pinch your depth stop idea.
I also experimented with allen keys but couldn't find one that was hard enough. The depth stop isn't really my idea. There are commercial models with the same principle.
very nice. Well worth the time I spent watching. Its always a pleasure seeing quality, much of what we see today is for the mass market and those people don't appreciate those of the master craft. Thanks RC
Hi great project, looks a great way to build this tool. Can i suggest that you make your central cutter support the same height as the brass block. That way you could set the depth gauge by simply inserting a spacer between the holding block and the depth gauge block while cutter is set flush with the router base, similar to setting the depth of a power router.
Forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference between having an open vs. closed throat? The way you designed it is absolutely genius, I just don't understand the benefit.
The closed throat gives more stability if you don’t have much surface are to move the plane on. The open version has better visibility of what you are cutting.
Nice... Had you made the lower collar a little higher, so you have no gap between it and the depth stop, then you could have used, for example, the shaft of a drill to set a the depth, by just placing it between the collar and the dept stop.
"Понятно что такой паз можно сделать и нормальным современным инструментом, но сам процесс изготовления такого инструмента захватывает" - *i made this* )))
I like it. Based on your hand size, you might like another one (sibling?) with the same cutter size but 50% wider. I have a smaller and a larger one and find myself reaching for the bigger one more often.

*Holy cow* ! This is one hell of a *masterpiece* . All hand crafted - no milling here. You've got every reason to be proud of it.
Thanks!

Haha, thanks!
Does the blueing prevent rust? Or is it purely cosmetic?

In these days of CNC machines, its good to see someone that's able to use a file and a hacksaw! - well done!
A file, a hacksaw, a drillpress and sandpaper... awesome craftsmanship. You are an inspiration!

Excellent work. People don't realize how much can be done with basic tools.

it was a pleasure to see this video. the fact you did this with tools most DIYers have on hand. Fantastic work.
Thanks! You can do a lot with pretty basic stuff.
Excellent use of hand tools 🛠️ nice project.

Superb Idea with easy to source materials and using tools the majority of people have

Man. Amazing display of what we can do without too much, and also a beauty!
Thanks!
As a kid learning woodwork we didn't have routers, they weren't invented just yet, we used these, the grannies tooth plane. They are very effective.
Great job! I’m going to make two of these with a 10” and a 18” base plate to compliment the Stanley router plane I already own. Thanks for the idea.
So much more impressive than going to the store! Amazing work.
Thanks!
A brilliant design and well executed with hand tools! good engineering.
Thanks!
I admired your hand work skill Mr.

absolutely outstanding, in a few moments I learned so much ! thanks for the pedagogy and clear explanations.
Thanks for watching!
One of the nicest DIY router planes I’ve seen to-date !
You could also make a spear-headed cutter to use in it...
good idea!
Beautiful piece of work. Made with skill, knowledge experice, and above all labour of love.
You are very good with a file, very experienced. A tool, ideal for the cabinetmaker and those building furniture with hand-tools. Excellent!!
Beautiful work, looks way better than anything bought, I want one!

Beautiful work without the help of a CNC !!!!!!!!
Fine looking work. Also I’m going to need an affiliate link for that hacksaw blade. 🤣🤣
And you can use it also as a dovetail laying jig ;). Great job!! So much filling, but it was really worth it!!
Haha, true! I hadn‘t thought of that.
Very nice work man and all with simple tools.
Très joli travail. Bel outil!
Félicitation

I really like the use of marker for layout fluid
So beautiful and also works! I wish I had such an ability.
Thanks! It mainly requires a bit of patience…
A real work of art !!
Thanks!
Merci
Clever design
Impressive tools, they cut through the steel like it was wood!
Very nice! Good looking router plane.
Thanks!

...but what a filing marathon!!! 😂
Haha, yes. It might not have been too far from 42 km worth of file strokes..

Yes, good idea. It still works though between the depth stop and the top of the post that the cutter is attached to.
