Vintage Old School Alpine 7288 Pull Out Cassette Radio CD Changer Controller - 1080P

  • Wow, a true survivor! This unit was available in 1989-1990 for $500 MSRP. A very expensive head unit at the time as with most Alpine head units. The 7288 had built-in CD changer controls for the 5959/5952 CD Changers as well as four pre-amp RCA outputs. The unit also had a built-in amp if you were just replacing a stock head unit and didn't need external amplification.
The 7288 embodies Alpine's classic "clicklet" buttons and design. Many of you have probably never seen a pull-out cassette radio, so I decided to show how it works! Although the 7288 wasn't Alpine's top of the line cassette player at the time (think 7289/7390), is is still an ultra-rare find in this condition and should help us appreciate the ease of CD's and iPods today!

I installed this in my room, with a car battery and a coustic 175watt 2 channel amp. This was in 99 and i was 14. Good memories, i remember having to flip the deck over once in a while because the tape mechanism would act up. The glow from the square buttons was awesome at night.

Man, that's in incredible condition. I must say though that I neither miss pull-outs or cassettes. I literally got into the industry right when they were peaking.

Omg my favorite deck!! I was eating in a McDonalds parking lot back in 93 when I Mexican vato approached my car with this deck for 50$ we used to call these 6 crystal back in are day this went in my 81 Cadillac coup Deville gold metallic flake with 108 true spoke wire wheels with 1 inch white walls and when I got rid of that car I kept my deck we used to hide these under the seats and if we wanted to act cool we would walk in carrying it in hand then when detachable face plates came out I was blown away and had to have one they would come with a sunglasses type case to put the face and remote in memories

I would usually pull out my Alpine 7903 and hide it under the seat...carrying it was a pain!

Back in 1989-'90,when I was still a HS teen.Pull out car stereos was a "new thing".I remember a few male students would bring 'em into class('cause it was also the "in thing" for thieves to break into cars just to get your stereo).

In 1988 i bought a 7385M, with HLTAC head and only preamp outputs for today around 650€, a 3539 amp (500€) and an Infinity CS1 Kappa (500€), that was awesome (and expensive!) for that time :) Once Alpine, always Alpine, today a IDE-178BT.

@normalicy I'm with you. I never bought a cassette deck, used a 2nd hand one until I saved up enough to buy my first CD tuner (1990), the Sony 7520. It lasted about 13 months (just out of warranty), then died. I picked up the Alpine 7903 used and used it for nearly 10 years in 3 different cars until I retired it with a 7894. I would've been much happier saving up 100 more and just getting the Alpine 7903 in the first place..the Sony skipped like crazy, Alpine never did!!

Great video! I was just going thru boxes in my garage and found my Alpine 7288 that I bought new around 1991. On mine the rca jacks are labeled "line out rear" and "to changer". I have the Alpine 5957 6 stacker as well and the harness for it is a 8 pin DIN(?) But also has 2 rca plugs wired in. Not sure why but I recall the rcas had to be connected for the changed to work. I'll have to hook this up on the bench one day and make a video!

Looking further I even found the original owners manuals for both! I also have a spare chassis for the 7288. Back in the 90's I had a car and a truck so bought the spare instead of another head unit 😁

@thebestofall007 Yes, I do know about the 7909 and 7909 Anniv model. The orig 7909 was 1200 list back in 1990. Not sure the anniv models MSRP, but I know it was up there. It had a copper encasing and used a high-end DAC. I've never tested or used either, as they are (and will probably always be) out of my price range.

@CLNFREAK1 Yeah, nostalgia is good, but also reminds us how lucky we are to have digital music and easy access today. Listening to a tape and waiting for your song SUCKED! I still like the design, simplicity and build quality of these older units, although in today's money, this head unit would be pushing 1g...

I recently found a Alpine 7392s and got it for free. Only problem is I don't have a wiring harness or the cage. It is one of the Preamp only headunits and requires external amps. @thebestofall007 I'm not doubting you the Supertuner's were better. I never owned a Pioneer at the time, b/c I decided if the head unit didn't have a rotary volume knob, it wasn't for me. The radio stations I picked up were 30-35 miles away, and again, I had no antenna connected.

  • @wal

@bigdwiz It was driving me crazy...it was called the Kicker Super II. It was a full range pre-fab box with dual 8's (active) dual 10's (passive) and dual horns for mids/highs. The pic I found on Flickr the guy mentioned buying it at a yard sale for 2 bucks!

@valdarmort Nothing, unless Universal Music decides they want to pull you down. There's no due process, they can have you pulled down for any reason at any time. You can appeal, but good luck challenging the record labels. They have no clue about free promotion...my video with the Punch 45 and Polk sub was tagged b/c of Beastie Boys. I bet many people went out and bought a Beastie Boys song b/c they heard it in my video...Sony music says I'm infringing on their copyright, oh well.

@mrchrisk36 That's cool man! I'm hoping someone has a manual, but I may just have to cough up the 10 bucks and buy one. Do you recall what the dealer cost on this unit was? I was able to get Sony stuff at wholesale for a period of time and it was 1/2 of list price. I got my first component set XS-HL45's (5.25 mids, 1 in tweets) for 160 shipped and they retailed for 300. No, Boston's or MBQ's they were not, but for the price I couldn't resist!

That leaves only one RCA out labeled REAR. Do you know if the CD Changer RCA can also be used to go to an amp? I'll continue to look for the owners manual, but thought I'd try a question here. -thanks

@bigdwiz how far were you from the stations you showed in the video? i used the supertuners because they seem to have above average sensitivity, selectivity, and overload rejection specs (and from first hand field tests comparing them to others, as i am an avid DXer). Now that they have upgraded to the IIID, I can regularly listen to a station from over 120 miles away on 99.9 and it's jammed between a STRONG 100.1 and 99.7. What is on 99.7 doesn't bleed to 99.9 or 99.5.

That's not the case now. I've always used pioneer radios myself and have always liked a radio with good reception and sometimes on clear mornings I like to see what I can pick up and recently I upgraded from an older pioneer touchscreen to a new alpine bc I wanted the carplay features and the tuner on that is the best I've had yet. It pulls in the stations alot stronger than the pioneer as well as others the pioneer couldn't receive at all.

the only thing i hate about the older alpine HU's is the tuners (before they switched to their maxtune tuners) on them sucked and didn't pick up well, which is one of the reasons why i have always opted for pioneer headunits instead (especially their supertuner IV and IIID).
