- This is my arrangement of "On Raglan Road," a poem by Patrick Kavanagh set to the tune of "The Dawning of the Day" by Luke Kelly of the Dubliners. All instruments and vocals, including the disembodied bouzouki and backing vocals, were played by me. Recorded in 2011.

I worked out the chords watching your video and can say are the finest you can come across! Guess I have now a new fantastic song to play ... singing is another story. Keep it up.
Beautiful rendition, lovely arrangement
Absolutely beautiful cover of such a great song... Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us all... :)
How on earth do you have 127 views on this video? This version of Raglan Road is extraordinarily beautiful - love your guitar, your bouzouki, and your voice. One of my favorite versions I've ever heard
Thanks! It used to have more, but my old UA-cam account wasn't associated with the email I use for music business purposes and Google+, so I transferred my videos over, and in doing so, I lost all my old view counts and subscribers! Kind of annoying, but worth it to streamline everything.
Mm makes sense. Well I've resubscribed. Looking forward to more awesome music!
Very nice, lovely!
Thank you
This is incredible Lindsay. I've had the pleasure of hearing this song sung by many very talented Irish musicians and this us up there with the best of them. Your voice definitely suits this style of singing. Great work, keep it up.
Thank you!
Of course not Lindsay! It's a big compliment... i like your version v much!! Much better
than many many 'more famous' versions up here on You tube. Your voice is lovely, your
arrangement tasteful and the playing v nice. I'd love to hear more songs from you :)
Lovely version Lindsay - I'll come back to playing this along with Maurice Dickson's version, and Mary Black too; the rest (inc Luke Kelly) I'll leave to those who have different musical tastes. Ok - what else of yours can I listen to right now......
+Lowdenjim Hi, you should listen to Irish singer Caitlin - Raglan Road
+sainglain Yes - she is quite a nice singer and does a decent version, but Lindsay has better breath control and ( in my opinion) superior phrasing and a smoother, more pleasant voice.
Wow. The more I listen to it I hear how good it realy is. Great job!
This is straight up beautiful, from the that first quiver in your voice, I had a genuine double take. straight on the pod. Well played young lass!!
I just saw you brought out a CD and I'm not surpeised :) Great!
Really nice cover and such an amazing voice ! Could you tell me which chords did you use?
Incredibly beautiful...EVERYTHING about it..even the stunning sunset in the background...make a great presentation. Would you mind sharing your chord progression ? I'm also curious as to how you overdubbed the vocals, etc. As an older guy...with poor computer skills...can't see how you did that. Sophisticated equipment ? Anyway...just beautiful. Want more !
Thanks! The chord progression is just a standard I-IV-V in G progression with the capo on 3; I occasionally subbed in a Cadd9 for C, G/B for regular G, D/F# and D/A for regular D, and threw in an Em sub for C in the 3rd or 4th verses.
As far as recording, I wasn't manning the computer for this one, but as far as I remember we recorded in Logic or Protools, doing the vocals & guitar at the same time, then overdubbing the bouzouki and second vocal. Nothing particularly fancy - you could do the same in GarageBand. There's some nice reverb and EQ on everything that's far above what you'd get in GarageBand, though.
I'm looking for a good version of this. Not found any. The melody is traditional ( the dawning of the day)and beautiful. Most versions imho are too slow, syrupy and/or overproduced.Needs to be simply sunf imho This is nice! Well done.
David Macmillan All right, thanks! The notification I got only showed the beginning of your comment, making it look like you had just come by to be insulting. I'm pleasantly surprised to see that's not the case.
So much love and heart break in your voice, its very moving well done.
Perfect! And what a song that is.
That is an Irish song that i do myself and i love it... and i love how you do it..
Nice version Lindsay, thanks!
Amazing voice! Beautiful poem, and unfortunately that's happening to me, but for that reason, this song makes me feel something strong inside me. Thank you for share this piece of art with us! I send you a hug from México
Thank you! I'm sorry to hear you're going through the experience of this song, but I'm glad you enjoy it and can take some comfort in it. Best wishes!
It's amazing! I love ur voice so much♥
Raglan Road is one of my very favorites, and a few years back I began making a list of the covers of it. I'll add you to that list. You did a beautiful job, young woman! Thank you.
Glad to hear I made the list, especially when there are so many other great covers out there!
Really beautiful version. Congratulations.
Paulino Guitar Thanks!
very good version, thanks
I was going through all the versions of this song on you tube, and this is my favourite...beautiful~
Gary have a look at Mr Celtic Reggae raglan road youtube version its really different but I love it u mite like it 👍
beautiful !
This is exceptionally good.
The more I listen to this the more I like it.
This is very good rendition of this song .. should have 1000s of likes
Increasable version.
Well done,
Really nice job! I enjoyed it very much, and I'm a huge fan of Billy Bragg (although I know he only covered this song). As a fellow musician/guitar player, I thought you did a great job, this is a tough song to sing, and you definitely did it justice. That's my two-cents anyway. After all, I'm not trying to change the world, I'm not looking for New England...
Thanks! I'll have to check out his version, I don't think I've heard it yet.
Yeah, please do check it out. I though you may be a fan because he does a popular cover of Raglan Road. If you don't know him the last part of my comment probably didn't make sense, he does another song called "A New England", that's a really good one as well. And "Between the Wars", those two are worth giving a listen. You can hear them here on UA-cam.
Nick Wood Ahh, I was a little confused by that part of your comment! I think I've heard some of his songs, but never a full album, and not those songs, as far as I'm aware. Thanks for the suggestion!
Really nice cover and such an amazing voice ! Could you tell me which chords did you use?
Sure! It's nothing too complicated. Basically it's in G (or rather, Bb with the capo on 3rd fret), and I use a lot of add 9 chords, thirds in the bass, etc.
The main progression is:
G - Cadd9 - G - Cadd9 - D/F# - G //
C - G - G/C - D/A //
Cadd9 - G - G/B - Cadd9 - D/F# //
G - D/F# (higher, F# on the 4th string) - C/E - Cadd9 - D/F# - G //
The third verse is simpler, with even less going on, but such a pain to write out! Basically, hold down a D on the B string, and imply the chords with just the bass notes, leaving all the middle strings open.
If that doesn't quite help you, let me know, and I'll try to think of some other way to get the idea across!
Nicely done!
Beautifully done
My favorite cover of this song! Absolutely beautiful voice!
Thank you!
This is really beautiful, you have such an amazing voice!
Thanks :)
Quite lovely. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Wow, this is awesome(:
fantastic version -- tuning and chords!! Please!
Hi John - it’s just standard tuning, regular chords in the key of G, but lots of inversions - D/F#, D/A, G/B, some Cadd9s, etc.!
Superb 👌🏻
Wow
Class ☘
beautiful. your voice is haunting.
+Glen Barton Thanks!
Amazing version of the song! Such a beautiful voice.
Thanks!
Lindsay Straw You are very welcome
One of the best covers of this song that I have ever heard.
Thank you!
A beautiful rendition of a beautiful song and poem......
Thanks!
I hope you don't mind but I shared your video on my FB page. I just wanted to contribute and give you a little more exposure...
As beautiful as Ragland Road, is, it is not the easiest to play and get right. Growing up in an Irish community in London, I heard this song played many times by many people, and you nailed it... I play it often...
camdenmonkey I don't mind that you shared it; that's really nice of you, I appreciate it! Have you recorded it yourself?
No but I've sang the Luke Kelly version a few times down at my local pub back way back when. I have tried playing it on the guitar but cannot seem to get the tempo right.....
amazing lindsay!
Thanks!
Sorry,get another song.
Stephen Burke Sorry, go watch another video. Nobody’s forcing you to watch mine, dude.
Every now and again over the years I listen to your rendition of this song and get teary eye'd everytime. Absolutely beautiful.
As someone who loves a good music cry, this is the best compliment I could ask for!
