My uncle John Rourke in Crockeen Co Leitrim was shot in the leg by Tans as he made his escape over a wall. He was born in 1877 and died in 1974. His house and land was squatted by Bernard William MC Govern who has his own plot now in Drumreilly.

Bloody hypocrites! 20% of the Black and Tans were Irish anyway and 80% of the RIC were Irish Catholics. And don't even start me on all those Irish traitors, spies and informers. As an Englishman it seems to me that many Irish do not even understand their own history.

As a reasonably frequent English visitor to Ireland, it's incredible how quickly the country has changed. It has traded an embattled and sincerely held national view, for a highly secularised global model. Would the Irish or English people in this video have recognised what their countries had become, much less approved of it?

I saw these interviews and others from the same programmes and others many years ago. First of all that IRA Volunteer at 2 56-3.04 with the gentle soft voice and expression is Billy Mullins. His name is not given in this interview. He was a brave, gallant man who fought tenaciously for the freedom of his country. He was a comrade of my grandfather in the same IRA North Co.Kerry Brigade. My grandfather served with both the 1st & 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers(would have been his local regiment) and the 51st Welch Regiment during WW1 and saw action at various fronts including the Somme. He was lucky to survive being hit in the head by a German sniper. When he came home to Ireland he joined the Kerry IRA. He stated and please forgive the agricultural language "I spent 3 years in tbe trenches of the Western Front up to my neck in mud, shit, piss and puke fighting for the freedom of small nation's. Ha Ha. As an experienced soldier and Irishman my duty was now not only to fight for my race and country in this new intimate war but for my family, neighbours and those lads I grew up with and went to school with and were now my comrades in arms. I was now fighting in the towns, villages of my native county. All us lads knew the county intimately from visiting cousins and friends in other parts. We knew the hills, mountains, and valleys where we played hide and go seek like the back of our hands. But in 1920 and 1921 there would be more serious consequences for getting caught. Ha Ha." It is no coincidence the best IRA units had Great War veterans in the ranks. Also the IRA's greatest victories in the Irish War of Independence were either planned by an IRA veteran of WW1 or they played a crucial role in their success. In Co.Kerry there was IRA Great War veterans at the famous Headford Junction ambush of March 21st 1921 which resulted in 8 British KIA and 11 WIA from the 1st Bn Royal Fusiliers(City of London regiment). This was one of the major victories by the IRA against ther regular British Army. When Richard Mulcahy first heard of this successful attack he thought it was the work of one of the Cork columns!. It was an IRA Great War veteran who had top marksmanship skills who killed the notorious decorated Auxiliary Major John McKinnon at Tralee,Co.Kerry Golf club while he was about to putt on the green in April 1921. Some local wit stated they were the best shots ever on that golf course. The IRA Great War veteran who shot him hid in a nearby tree. The death of Major Mackinnon was a great coup as he was the highest ranking Auxiliary in Co.Kerry as he was Officer Commanding (OC) of "H" Company. There was IRA Great War veterans from Co.Kerry involved in the Clonbanin ambush in Co.Cork on 5th March 1921.. This was a joint action involving both units from Co.Kerry and Co. Cork under the overall leadership of Sean Moylan. They attacked a large British Army convoy consisting of 3 lorries, touring car and a Rolls Royce armoured car. There was four British soldiers killed. One was Colonel-Commandant Hamway Cummins who would be the higgest ranking British Officer KIA. I have a picture of him presenting medals in Killarney on 4th March 1921 and he would be KIA the following day! This picture was kindly given to me by a British colleague at the Imperial War Museum. Along with Cummins another British officer and two privates from the East Lancashire regiment were KIA. Some reports state 13 British soldiers were killed but that is not the case. There was IRA veterans involved in the Castlemaine,Co.Kerry ambush on 1s June 1921 which left 5 RIC men dead. I also have another picture of Colonel-Commandant Cummins and also in the picture is Lt Adams of the 1st Royal Fusiliers. This picture was taken in early March 1921 in front of tbe RIC barracks in Kenmare. What is remarkable is that both British Officers would be KIA within days of this picture being taken. Colonel Commandant on 5th March 1921(Clonbanin,Co.Cork) and Lt- Adams Royal Fusiliers on 21st March 1921(Headford Junction,Killarney,Co.Kerry). Once again a copy of this picture was given to me by a British colleague at the Imperial War Museum. On that subject I have copies of great photos taken from the British side that dont appear in history books. By the time of the 11th July 1921 Truce the experienced hardened IRA Volunteer could be justifiably considered a first rate light infantry soldier. At the time of the Truce the Crown Forces were estimated at 75,000-80,000 personnel. Against this the IRA in terms of actually armed men could only put into the field 2,500-3,000 men. The great Irish historian T.Ryle Dwyer wrote an excellent book on the Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War in in Co.Kerry titled "Tans,Terror & Troubles".. A great tribute to outstanding men and women. However it is the families of those men and women of that generation that know the real sacrafice these brave men and women paid. Some of what happened never made it into history books. These IRA men in Co.Kerry and of course other counties would be described as freedom fighters and guerillas in history books. However to us their nearest and dearest they were fathers, grand fathers, great grand fathers uncles and great uncles etc. Some of us as children would remember them dressed in their Sunday best at Mass and later talking outside to older gentleman of a similar vintage no doubt former comrades talking of the turbulent times and the low sombre respectful tone when a name was mentioned which afterwards I came to know was a fallen comrade. I am so proud of my relatives in that south west corner of the Republic of Ireland in Co.Kerry. This great county is known as "The Kingdom". The great William Shakespeare wrote a beautiful prose in relation to King Henry the 5ths great victory at Aggincourt on St.Crispins Day He referred to the longbowmen as "We happy few,we band of brothers". This could be applied to the IRA's Flying Columns and Active Service units. These brave men and women in Co.Kerry and the rest of Ireland would also not only inspire future generations of Irishmen and women but the Irish War of Independence in both its military and political elements would inspire future wars of Independence, freedom, liberation, self determination and anti colonial struggles in the decades that followed. These interviews from both sides gave a reslistic picture of the Irish War of Independence. I would like to pay tribute to a special family in Co.Kerry who contributed so much to the Republican cause. . Dan Alman a brave, gallant IRA Officer paid the ultimate sacrafice for the Republic he fought for when he was KIA on 21st March 1921 at Headford Junction,Killarney,Co.Kerry. His brother Father Myles Alman was a staunch Republican and Nationalist. This proud Irish priest came in for harsh treatment by tbe Black &Tans ,regular RIC Auxiliaries("H " Coy) and regular British Army (Royal Fusiliers and North Lancashire Regiment) not only for his own political beliefs but obviously also being the brother of an IRA Officer. He would passionately defend the Anti-Treaty IRA during the Irish Civil War. They had a sister May who did Herculean work for Cumman Na Mban in both the Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War. She would later becone a nun. This generstion of Irishmen and women were so special. For some of us relatives and descendants of this great generation who became soldiers ourselves made us really appreciate the bravery, indefatigable and indomitable courage of this generation who took on an Empire.

The Black and Tans raided our house often, they came in the middle of the night bayoneted the feather mattresses searched everywhere, threatened my Grandfather. My Grandmother and the children went at dusk over the fields to another village to sleep in a house there, returning in the morning.
The Black and Tans arrested Grandfather Grandmother and their young children, suspected of having a safe house for fighters. In the yard of the Garda barracks they threatened to hang him in front of the children.
He took out his and Granny’s American passports and showed them so they were released.
In the aftermath of the famine, as teenagers they were sent to New York where they met and married,
They returned to Ireland with their first child.

As the ex-British Auxiliaries at the start freely admit, they came back from settling the dispute between the Hapsburg cousins in Europe to stand in dire poverty in a bread queue in Birmingham. Of course they’ll take a few shillings to ship over to Ireland to fight the new enemy of the British overclass: a few struggling Irish farmers. I just wish we could be governed by intellectual types, professors etc. No politicians who subscribe to either religion.i would prefer no politicians at all infact, economics professors looking after the economy etc, business professors looking after that topic, medical professors looking after health care etc etc.
To govern a country I believe religion should not be involved, I don't nor ever will trust any politicians. To me they are all scam artists with little to no morals. I don't want northern irwland to be put if the Republic for this exact same reason. There is too much religion involved. I'd far rather have professors who are confirmed atheists doing the job.

Rivers, ridges, valleys , plains and uplands separate regions.

Dan would be the man. Ironically, the second would be a wonderful Englishman, David Attenborough. What a brave and intelligent man Dan was. I love his straight talking and how he articulated why his views were like they were. In 2024, its very difficult for us to understand the tyranny and theft of dignity that these imposters imposed on the people of this Island. Colonialism is never right and deserves to be rejected & purged. But it takes brave men (like Dan) and women to rise up and put their lives on the line for that to happen. Sadly, its still happening. The Dues and dumb yanks have driven out the poor people in what is now called Israel and Palestine from their homes since 1947 through persecution and aggression. Its no surprise that Ireland does not support these colonialists/terr0r1sts, we have been there.

It's a fascinating, but tragic topic. I have a foot in both camps, My maternal grandfather was from Doneraille and grew up in the Republican heartland. The family were close neighbours with the Eddery family. My paternal grandfather was an English WW1 veteran, a former Warrant Officer, who signed up for RIC service in Ireland He had an Irish Catholic wife. Something that was not pointed out in this documentary, was that there were a lot of Irish WW1 veterans in the Black & Tans too, both Catholic and Protestant. They were hard times and people needed the money. When independence was declared, my paternal grandfather transferred to the Free State Army, and found himself happily serving alongside former IRA men, who he described as fine soldiers. My maternal grandfather joined the Free State army, but was told to get out of Ireland by the IRA, as the Free State Army was quite keen on eradicating the IRA too, who, by that stage, had effectively won the war, but didn't want to stop fighting. He left Ireland and joined the British Army, where he served from the 20s in India through WW2.
As the great Flann O'Brien said, 'It is an insoluble pancake'
Nothing is quite as black and white (or tan) as some people make it out to be.

The interview with Tom Barry where you can see his hearing aid is from the documentary "Curious Journey" by Kenneth Griffith. Kenneth was a Welsh actor and had such sympathy for his Celtic cousins. The documentary "Curious Journey" also featured various interviews with Irish veterans of the Revolutionary period both men and women including David Nelligan who was Michael Collins spy in Dublin Castle. Like Tom Barry, David Nelligan would write a memoir "The Spy In the Castle". David's reputation would be tarnished as he was accused of torturing Anti Treaty IRA prisoners in Co.Kerry during the Irish Civil War. Kenneth Griffith also wrote an excellent book titled "Ireland's Unfinished Revolution" which was the type written words of his interviews with various veterans of the 1916 Easter Rising, Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War of both men and women in "Curious Journey". Kenneth also made a great documentary about Michael Collins titled "Hang Up Your Brightest Colours" (a phrase from George Bernard Shaw). Kenneth was in the movie "Wild Geese" with Roger Moore and Richard Harris. He had a lengthy film and TV career. He also made great documentaries about the Boer War and Anglo-Zulu War for the BBC.Hope this is helpful. Cheers.

During WW2 my Italian grandfather took part in the invasion and occupation on Yugoslavia, and he used to tell me about the fierce anti-guerrilla tactics employed by the Italian troops fighting Tito's partisans. The country had degenerated into a bloody civil war, with Yugoslav Serb Royalists fighting the Germans, the Croatian collaborationist Ustase, while collaborating with the Italians (and later with the Germans). Executions and reprisals were the norm, but my grandfather, who was a Sergeant Major in the Italian infantry, hated it. He used to say that it was one thing to kill in combat, but it was horrible to be in a firing squad. After telling me these stories he always had tears in his eyes, he came from a farming family exactly like the people he was fighting and who, in his opinion, had all the rights to fight the invaders and occupiers. He wasn't a faint-hearted man, he joined the Italian riot control police in 1945 (the Celere police troops), but he still cried when he recalled some of the worst things he witnessed in Yugoslavia...and he never told me all the details.

I have also visited Regimental Museums and libraries etc throughout the Republic of Irelabd and UK. That the Black & Tans were prisoners let out of jails is an urban myth that as you can see still gathers traction today. They were simply former soldiers who had gone through the worst conflict the world had seen up that date in human history. They certainly did not come back to a "country fit for heroes" as PM David Lloyd George promised but to unemployment and poverty. One can understand the financial incentive for these soldiers joining the RIC. However in Ireland they along with other elements of the Crown Forces committed war crimes and would be recognised as such by a UN Charter today. I was going question your comment but then stopped and thought about it more.....
You know what, there probably was good people on both sides. Keep in mind that these devils (the black & tans) were more like Vinny Byrne than they were to their commanding officers. They like Vinny were soldiers and just following orders. However, we all know about the horrific reprisals that they executed on innocent civilians which kind of lessons that argument. But...
You could argue that, once again it was their hierarchy that was to blame for not controlling their foot soldiers. However, one overriding fact cannot be avoided. These "soldiers" were in our country, killing our people and you know why ? Just because they could. i.e. they were more powerful at that point in time. Thankfully, in 2024 with the demise of the British economy following their genius decision to leave the largest trading block in the World, Ireland will not be subjected to that kind of subjugation in the next 100 years by our neighbours. Karma !
Oh the irony of it, a United Ireland is in-evitable in the next 20 years. Not because of force but because the dumb Brits voted to leave the EU. Their economy is going down the drain and people on this Island who live in the 6 counties will use their noggins and vote to join the EU.
In conclusion, I agree with you. You do indeed have bigger problems to contend with. Good luck with that !

@@creekyknee You make a valid point. In every war or conflict every soldier is directed by his own moral compass. In Co.Cork Colonel Hudson of the 1st Kings Liverpool Regiment literally saved the lives of many IRA prisoners from vengeful members of the Crown Forces. Tom Barry described him as a "gentleman". It was soldiers from the Welch Regiment that helped Ernie O'Malley and others escape from Kilmainham Jail in Dublin. Ernie O'Malley was captured in Co.Kilkenny by the Auxiliaries under the alias "Bernard Stewart" . If his true identity had been established he would have literally faced the hangman. When General Lucas was allowed to escape by the IRA he gave numerous interviews to the British press and stated that and I quote verbatim "I was treated as a gentleman by gentlemen". Sean McEoin carried out a successful ambush against members of "M" Coy Auxiliaries at Clonfin in Co. Longford in early February 1921. His unit killed 4 Auxiliaries and several were wounded. Sean McEoin was chivalrous to the defeated Auxiliaries and helped the wounded. Sean McEoin was later captured in Mullingar,Co.Westmeath by soldiers from the East Yorkshire Regiment. Later at Sean McEoin's trial several of the Auxiliaries that he ambushed attended and gave evidence of his fair treatment and battlefield etiquette. Not every member of the Crown Forces had horns and a tail!

Apart from that period, Ireland has NEVER been one united country (unlike Scotland and England who had countless Kings, Queens and rulers). The modern day Republic has done brilliantly to remove much of the influence and power of the corrupt Roman Catholic Church ,but to achieve a "United Ireland" the politicians in the Republic need to bin Varadkar and Sinn Fein. Not a cat in hells chance 1.5 million Protestants would vote to merge with these guys. Varadkar hates the UK, and as for Sinn Fein.......

My information to further from those volunteers featured here, when they ran out of volunteers they sought volunteers from prisons. (In Scotland too) The prisoners were offered their freedom on the conditions that they went to Ireland and beat the you know out of the irish. They readily excepted their freedom. Their were reports of rapes and other crimes. My pregnant great grand mother was hit across the face by a group of black and tans who had surrounded my grandmother, she was only 6 and seeking twigs to start their fire. From a six year old point of view and being actually living through their occupation has more weight and creditability to me than second hand “research” years after the fact.
“The crown forces were british army and auxiliaries in Dublin” well we know that, and we just saw some being interviewed! Each told to halt the disruptions the irish were making to the system , at any cost. One b&t fellow here related that with glee.

I have been to the relevant archives in Dublin(Military Archives,Cathal Brugha Barracks) and National Archives at Kew,Surrey,UK. It is complete nonsense that there was prisoners let out of British prisons to join the notorious Black & Tans and Auxiliaries. A complete urban myth without any foundation. You state your grandmother lived through the occupation but by grandfather fought against that occupation. He served with the British Army in WW1 and literally fought against the British Army,RIC,Black & Tans and Auxiliaries in Co Kerry during the Irish War of Independence. When I watched these interviews I replied in the comment section because I was able to identify the IRA Volunteer at 2.56-3.04 as he was a comrade of my grandfather. I too had relatives that fought in ww1 for the british. Three great uncles (my grandmothers older brothers in fact)
Allow me the favour to inform you further of the circumstance of my great grand mother having a miscarriage.
She was attempting to protect her daughter from british forces who had surrounded her and was intimidatingly questioning her far too vigorously.

My great grand mother lost her baby that night. These facts didn’t bear a mention from you. That’s sad.

Horrible History. Such pain and suffering our country has been subjected to by the mighty and all encompassing British Empire, they truly were the scum of the earth, every place they infected has been left with indelible scars, racial hatred, poverty and suffering. It's almost funny, (bittersweet?) all these years later, to see how easily the racial hatred they have for their 'subjects' was manifested into the Brexit debacle, and how they are now suffering themselves from a self imposed economic crisis as a result. The British are our cousins and neighbours, and I bear them no ill-will, but their bloody and shameful mark has been left on the history of the world.

The regular British Army committed war crimes as well. The Essex Regiment and South Staffordshire Regiment in Co Cork would earn a heinous reputation for torturing IRA prisoners as well as other regiments deployed in Co.Cork. The Royal Scots(Lothian Regiment) would earn a notorious reputation in Co.Clare. The Black & Tans also murdered Fr James O'Callaghan in Cork City on 14th May 1921.
