I've seen her perform to this music in many different competitions between 1991-1992 and she never even came close to a mistake free program. I think if she had, it would have been rewarded with a gold medal - I know many have criticized this music but its very beautiful and I feel like if she had skated cleanly to it the audience would have been mesmerized... She was so inconsistent with jumps in the long program throughout her career - its really quite amazing that she was able to give a near-perfect performance at the 1994 Olympics. She really conquered her nerves there for the only time in her career.
Remember, her chronic back problem was really bothering her here. She became so popular after the 92 Olympics that she over committed and the hectic schedule made it really hard for her to take care of her back properly. She also stated in a PBS program I saw that the white dress really hampered her ability to execute triple lutzes. Her triple lutz in the short program was pretty consistent, but I never saw her successfully land a triple lutz in a program while wearing this dress, although - according to Scott - she landed one in a warm-ip while wearing it.
@@genednomyar3383 Didn't know that. Either way to me it is still a good story with a happy ending. It was very inspiring to watch her finally put it all together at the 1994 Olympics. I still think she should have won the gold!
@@mikeg8375 I agree totally, and whole heartedly. Her skating was almost always inspiring to me, even when she had mistakes. As Dick Button observed, there is great tension in her skating, and that's why it's not only athletic but great theatre. That tension was resolved whenever she landed a beautiful jump, like a resolution of a suspenson in music. I watched one of her performances where I forced myself to focus only on her upper body movements; I was moved by the beauty.
This was a far better program than the 1994 Olympic long (choreography wise). Nancy watered down all her in between moves in 94 in order to land her jumps.
It's amusing how the announcers are figuring that she had lost a chance at a medal of any color, only for her to end up with the silver. The judging was very erratic at this year's championships.
In fairness everyone skated kind of shitty. She still probably didnt deserve silver but nobody but Kristi had a particularly strong performance, and everyone in the final flight except Kristi and Hubert (her 6 triple output even with some shaky landings and 2 falls was a surprise good considering her history and Olympic skate) performed below expectations. Particularly Lu Chen who very surprisingly had by far her weakest long program of the year, after having her first clean short of the whole year, and still medaled as well. And Tonya Harding who was shockingly weak technically, and much worse than even Albertville.
This is what happens when every major contender makes a major mistake, it's much harder for the judges to find appropriate marks for everybody when everybody underperforms. Another good example would be at the 1992 Olympics in the men's competition. The final ordinals were far from unanimous...
Strange how Midori got a 5.6 from GBR for technical in Albertville having done 5 triples including the 3 axel and Nancy has a 5.7 (from GER) for doing 4 triples including a barely held on 3toe. This program was a bit of a disaster.
She was elegant and her line/posture and overall movement was superior to Tonya's. By 94 Nancy had become consistent with her triple jumps and posed a threat to Tonya who was washed up by then. Tonya's peak was in 1991. Her fans don't seem to realize how her power and consistency dropped considerably from the 92 Olympics on. Her long program at the 94 Olympics was her best showing in years and it paled in comparison to what she was doing in 91.
Sandra Bezic and Debbie Wilkes are the most annoying commentators of all time. Had to turn the volume off watching this. Nancy was over marked on this program. Too many errors and very unsophisticated choreography. Beautiful costume.

Wasn't one of those a Triple Loop and one a triple salchow? And the jump she wasn't able to land looked good in the air to me, but it also looked like an edge jump. Could you discern what it was? I guess it also had to be a salchow or a loop. As far as a program, I always did love this program, even though she never did execute it perfectly. It had such great dramatic tension built into it because of the music.
Anyone else notice how considerably thinner she looks both here and at the Olympics after the US Nationals? She definitely lost at least 5 pounds since Nationals
Few skaters have had the beauty and completeness of skating style as Nancy Karrigan...(.I liked the music in this performance)....she is classy and elegant...a joy to watch..
She isn't elegant. She's awkward. She looks regal because she's bedecked in tremendously expensive costumes, but that's about it. Her skating is boxy and it has no flow. She didn't glide on the ice like a Yamaguchi, Chen Lu or Chouinard. She forced the ice to carry her, and it was an unattractive attribute. She looks arrogant in her posture. I feel like she never broke into a gold medal because not only were performances always flawed, but she is just very unlikeable in how she presents herself.
I never quite understood how people could actually compare her to Peggy Fleming, except for the costumes. I think people were TRYING to turn her into a Peggy Fleming, who is one of the most graceful skaters ever.
Put a pig in a 20,000 dollar vera Wang costume and win a very undeserving medal. That short program was crap with a beautiful costume and the long program wasn't any better
To be fair to Kerrigan, the Kerrigan spiral is actually a lot more difficult than it looks - it requires tremendous balance, core strength and control to do. And she holds it FOREVER which is really hard. I'm no great fan of hers, but credit where credit is due.
Yup, Vanessa Riley was one of the most respected judges for not being afraid to judge programs as she saw them. Unfortunately, she was aged out after the 2015-2016 season and had to retire.
It's not just the seriousness of the mistakes though, it's also the content of what WAS landed. By doubling the flip, singling the Lutz, and hand down/near fall on the loop, she left the four remaining clean triples being two toe loops (in combination) and two Salchows. Those are also considered the two easiest triples. Kristi had a more obvious fall, yes, on the Salchow, but she landed everything else, which amounts to six triples, including two Lutzes--the most difficult jump--two toe loops, a flip, and a loop. Kristi absolutely deserved her win here, no contest. Nancy was robbed in '94. But not here. She was lucky to get 2nd with this performance.
@@ADEAL918 The ordinals were all over the board after Kristi.
