I've been a huge fan of Dan for years, and I've heard so many little things in this song that I don't think I've heard him do before. Mad props to both of you, Chris, for always improving and innovating with your voices.
INSTANT CLICK Daniel is a masterful vocalist, absolutely amazing. Writing this just as the song starts, I am sure you enjoyed it as much as I did. Tesseract are on repeat 24/7, legendary group.
I took lessons with Dan almost 10 years ago and am still able to use parts of his pedagogy with my own students; he has multiplied himself! He is the real deal and is constantly pushing the boundaries of what is vocally possible while remaining emotionally vulnerable in his takes. An excellent vocalist in the truest sense of the word. So glad to see you reacting to him and his band!
War of Being is just out of this world. So complex, yet so coherent. What an amazing comeback for TesseracT. Also baffling to see just how many details you notice during your first listen.
So good to have the boys back. That groovy, Meshuggah-esque kick part in the first half and the scream melody at the end are absolute bananas. Overall Daniel has raised the bar in terms of his aggressive vocals - I doubt anyone will be able to rival his versatility. The cleans were never a problem and now it seems "death growls" and blistering pitch fry's aren't either. Can't wait to see them live again with new material.
The emotion in this...the variation in technique...this may be my favorite piece of art...ever. And Daniel has taken things next level. The emotion in every different technique he utilizes just SO fits the song, the struggle, the video theme. This is as good as it gets. If you read this Daniel, I am in awe. Thank you so much for this breakdown Chris. Love your insight and passion.
I'm so glad you reacted to this! I'm not really a modern metal guy, but about 6 years ago I was just drawn to TesseracT because they sounded so interesting. I think with this song and whatever else comes from this album Dan has moved into the "greatest singers of all time" conversation.
Being a metal fan since my teens, being into prog since I was 19, discovering tesseract since One and, still, I am surprised by their power of innovation, it's still tesseract, all nuances are the same as in older albums, but still, it sounds fresh to me. Amazing band, 11 minutes of eargasm
Thank you for this Chris! it's so awesome to hear Dan really go in on the screams with his vocal range, especially on that last section... chills! This album is going to be such a banger when it's released, looking forward to it.
Loved watching your reaction to this. I made all the same faces and was in absolute shock with that last section. The way he can make pitched distortion sound so beautiful takes talent and skill. This song is a beautiful journey. Thank you for giving me another reason to listen to it for the 57th time
Dude, thanks for doing a video on this band! I feel like they're pretty well known within their genre, but they still don't get that much notice when you look at social media and UA-cam engagement. I'm sure you'd agree that a band with these vocals and such intricate music deserves more appreciation.
Awesome reaction video; great analysis of one of the best vocalists in rock/metal music today, and you're a great vocalist yourself. Subscribed. Dan should totally see this!
Love that quote you make Chris: "These kinds of songs, just take you through so many different kinds of emotions and places... wow" And... "I can't wait to listen to this MULTIPLE MULTIPLE times" I agree. I can't even describe how this song connects on so many different levels each time I listen, depending on where I am and how I'm feeling. I was grateful to see them in Melbourne just recently. They were AMAZING live, and everyone must see them. Wow.
Thanks for this Chris! What a fantastic analysis. I'm still growing into this brilliant track but you've really helped me appreciate many of the vocal details that I hadn't really detected with the sort of detail you bring to the table in your breakdown. I also spend a lot of time picking my jaw off the floor at Jay Postones kit work so I miss other things. Again, great job, man!
I love all of Dan's stuff! He has a buncha live videos including the last live album from 2021 that just show how he can effortlessly do these things. People like to say his voice isn't the same as it was when he was in Skyharbor, whatever, but i think he's just learned more about himself. I used to watch his streams, and even now he's made steps to start working out a lot more. I think he would def be a good guest on your channel
Between Sonder and War of Being, Dan has performed on something like 5 albums from a few other projects that allowed him to really shine and experiment with his voice, so I'm thinking the jump in quality and vocal diversity on this new album is going to blow all his previous work out of the water. I'm also hoping he didn't make a crutch for his own back in trying to perform the final part of this song on tour!
I literally JUST wanted to recommend you the new tesseract song for an analysis not only because it is an epic long piece, but because DT showcases so many different vocal techniques it's incredible! for someone who has been following tesseract since the very beginning I can tell you he tried so many things over the years and well he really perfected his "effortless" yet insanely compressed scream. incredible! btw he does sing throughs and even recordings live on youtube or twitch from time to time. very cool guy that would probably be down to collaborate with you :D
YESSSS i've been waiting for this one, daniel has always been amazing but in this one his really showing all his versatility, it's amazing... also the "*sold a lie" bit with the subtitles killed me one thing that i've noticed is that daniel reserves the voiceless screams always for just a few special moments, but for the majority of screams he always has a pitch in them, which is great because that makes his screams always sit in key with the song
I've actually been looking forward to seeing you do an analysis video on this song. So many different vocal parts that Tompkins does in this just an incredible vocalist! I'm seeing Tesseract & Polaris in October can't wait! \m/
Dan is incredible! You should look into all his projects and guest vocal work! White Moth Black Butterfly, Skyharbor, Hajis Kitchen, Earthside and his Twitch, of course! He has a bunch of home studio versions of his work!
Daniel Thompkins is so damn good! This song is such a good return to form IMO. I am so glad to hear him screaming more compared to Sonder, despite me thinking that album is perfect.
Just filmed a video on it WITH DAN TOMPKINS!! So we got his first hand take and analysis on his own voice as I watched it for the first time!! I'll be out soon!!
Love Dan's vocals. He has said one of his influences is Maynard James Keenan. Another one of my favourite vocalists. And I can definitely see the influences. You should check out his solo work or his other project White Moth Black Butterfly which he does duo vocals with Jordan Bethany. Dan has become one of my favourite vocalists over the years. He puts the work in on his vocals with his live streams on Twitch and stuff.
Thank you for introducing me to this. I've heard of TesseracT, of course. But I'm not deep into metal music. The metal bands I like always have singing as opposed to screaming. So I tend to avoid bands I assume are "screaming" bands. But this was the perfect balance for me. I don't dislike screaming. It's just when that's the only vocal approach, I can't get into it. Singing melody is my favorite aspect of music, so I need that to feel like I have something to latch onto. It also helps that the screams have a pitch here, like you pointed out. Anyway, if this song is any indication, TesseracT is more to my tastes than I assumed. I loved the progg-y breakdown in the middle. The tone of those guitars and bass were just awesome. And the singing is incredible.
Great reaction and analysis Chris! I would love to see you do the same for Earthside’s Dream in Static, which Dan sung on and knocked it out of the park!
Dan used to workshop this tune on his livestreams. I was like "right on, he's trying a few new things. Cool.". Then the album dropped and I was like HOLY SHIT. The man's leveled up.
This is so damn useful, seeing you build up some of his sounds from a sort of vocal palette, one step at a time, you can see how to do some of these more extreme techniques in a healthy way. Dan's gotten absolutely amazing, he hit such a peak in this album technically and emotionally! Your interview with him made me seek this one out :)
I love Tesseract, especially the Polaris album, but my favorite Daniel Tompkins performance has to be his guest vocal on Earthside’s “A Dream in Static”.
I like to believe towards the end he was very emotional about what he was singing, thats why in certain places the voice is trying to break free into more sighs.
I really think you need to check out Dir En Grey live footage. Something like Macabre - Live at Tabula Rasa. Kyo has one of the most impressive vocal ranges in the world going from crazy unique (The most unique I mean) Fry Screams, to operatic in a second. They are IMO the best Japanese band around and have been for many years.
Dir En Grey wasn’t really my cup of tea until I heard the Arche album. It was love-at-first-listen and remains in my top ten favorite albums of all time.
Just saw Tesseract 3 days ago they were soooo amaz|ng L|ve and best part about |t was was that |t was a l|ttle crowd so they were |nteract|ng w|th all of us.. Just an amaz|ng n|ght :)
The other songs of this album are recognizable once you've heard this one. Hope to listen to the whole album soon to see if it's like the albums of Pink Floyd. Better when you hear the whole thing instead of just one song.
Hey. You seem really talented, but I'd love some advice. For about the last year, I've been trying extreme metal vocals (Hard with my 18 year old voice). I've had a little success in techniques covered by Greg Puciato of early The Dillinger Escape Plan. I was wondering if you could maybe take a look at Car Bomb! Their vocalist is Micheal Dafferner, he has a very technical way of singing in terms of both rhythm and vocal range. Could you take a listen? A video on how to sound like Micheal Dafferner from Car Bomb would be the best thing... ever. Just a thought. :)
Great analysis of an incredible vocalist. Solid pitch screams by you too. Maybe a little too soda and lime and not enough bourbon and coke but good none the less 😉
And I know I already asked you to listen to Car Bomb, but even more so, please teach us how to sound like Rich Lombardi of The Sawtooth Grin and Cloacal Kiss. He sounds like a pterodactyl. I want to sound like a pterodactyl. Please teach me, please make a video on how to sound like him. Please, I'm begging you. I saw him live last week, and he told me that building my own voice was the only way to succeed... which I took that as meaning "Don't even try", but I believe you're capable of recreating and teaching even his vocal style. Please.
Literally addicted to this song. It's a masterpiece. Gotta be approaching 70+ plays now lol.
Song of the year no doubt.

Finally my favourite singer ❤️
Invite him Chris! Like you did with Spencer…it would be worth it!!
22:13 haha a singing coach "gotta hear that fill again" rewinds Tesseract rhythm section just to enjoy it once more IS SUCH A VIBE HAHA
War of Being is just out of this world. So complex, yet so coherent. What an amazing comeback for TesseracT.
Also baffling to see just how many details you notice during your first listen.
I love seeing Dans voice analyzed. He is my favorite vocalist of all time!
His cover of Human Nature is absolutely incredible. Definitely one of the best to ever do it
So good to have the boys back.
That groovy, Meshuggah-esque kick part in the first half and the scream melody at the end are absolute bananas.

you have to do Legion by TesseracT ...the vocals Daniel is doing on that song are just amazing.

He was already a great singer, but he has improved even more. I love Dan.

Oh man this is going to be great to watch, been waiting for chris to disect dan's voice after they posted this g.o.a.t. of a song.
Loved the reaction! Fully agree, I will be listening to this numerous times for these little, delicate variations, vocally and instrumentally.
