As I type I’m wearing a pair of 10 year old Road Gloves that are now more Shoe Goo than Merrell-love these things. Merrell’s overthinking and over-engineering led to a disappointing Trail Glove 5: the arch ‘support’ is distracting and completely unnecessary.
Don’t know what’s so difficult in producing a good barefoot shoe when the premise is so simple: a wide toe box and a flat, zero drop, flexible, sole. The rest is superfluous. The real challenge is durability. Yet shoe companies can’t seem to resist re-engineering instead of refining such a basic product.
Vapor Gloves 5 on order. I’m curious to see how they do. Thank you for the insights.
Great video, been looking for this comparison for a while.
My personal thoughts are that Merrell sort of shot themselves in the foot by narrowing the toe box with the 4 onwards. Not sure why they did this, the 3's fit my foot great but anything after is just too tight in the forefoot. It's quite frustrating as the rest of the shoe is very good, but I just can't pay money for a narrow toe box.
Anyone know why on earth Merrell got away from the wide toe box? It's almost like they took one of the main reasons people bought the shoe and just discarded it. So strange.
Thank you for such a great review!
I've loved my vapor glove 3s and previous models so much, I just kept replacing them yearly, accepting that hotspot of wear-tear/ultimate destruction as the cost of such a great feeling shoe. They're more difficult to obtain now, so I just gave up and got two pairs of VG 5. The more subdued color-ways are better for using them in daily activities, and they seem more robust and should last longer. I've been afraid to go past the 3, but the difference of the 5s I feel on my feet are minimal. 🙂
The Vapor Glove 3 Leather is much stronger than the mesh version of the shoe, walked these shoes daily for 100 day's with 10000+ steps each day and they shoe is still water proof and the leather adjusted in the weak point of the mesh version. The soles are still textured with minimal flat spots on both heels. I do think that these shoes have a long time to go I don't think the connection between the sole and the shoe is good enough to stay waterproof during another raining season if I keep wearing these every day. Surely buying 2 spare sets of these for bad weather or muddy walks, don't wear these in mid summer.
Great review. I only have the Vapor glove 4’s and they are by far the best barefoot shoes I have ever had ( better than my vivos ). I have run just under 200 miles in my Vapor glove 4’s and they are brilliant!!! And they look almost brand new… not much wear at all… I estimate I will get 500 miles minimum…. Might even buy another pair or two just in case they become hard to find… one day, if no 4’s in my size will try the 5.
Good choice!
Now that was a straight forward no nonsense vid and presentation, thanks!!
One thing I did not quite get: I have a Vapor glove 4 in US 11.5 ; if I get a Vapor Glove 3 (three): Which size do you recommend? 11.0 or 12.0 (you said something about sizing up or down, right?)?
Thanks, greetings from Austria / Europe
Get the same size. The 3s might be sliightly wider depending on version, but overall they fit the same.
Hello sir I have flat feet and I would like to ask you does flat feet causes walk with limp?? Because for my whole life I'm currently 20 people have told me I walk with limp so is it because of my flat feet? I have seen doctors and they have recommended ortho shoes with inbuilt arches.
Yes. Exactly ! Great review ! All they had to do at Merrel is to give the vapour glove 3 a bit more durable mesh when they were designing the 4. That would be the almost perfect shoe. Well hopeffuly the vapour glove six is going to be waht we are waiting for. If Merrel manages to merge the best of the 3 (wide fit that can be adjusted with laces) and 5 (the sole) into an ideal 6 , I am gonna buy at least ten pairs. :-)
We can only hope... But they don't seem as focused on barefoot shoes, as they used to.
Bought a new pair, received today. All black, all suede.. MIGHT be more durable? Clearly has a little arch
Support though..
I was wrong it's nubuck not sued. Still a different material, I think..
Vapor glove 6 came out
Hey im gonna buy my first barefoot shoes and im focused on Vapor Glove 3. But i have some worries bout size. Just as i read in instruction, measure ur feet and pick the right shoe size. My example feet 27,5 sooo according to Merrell table its 43,5 but someone said my feet wont fit in 43,5 i should add 1cm to feet size then pick a shoe number. Never bought shoes on internet so i dunno how its done i always try them on in stationary shops and here i dont have such possibility. Could U confirm me that size picking info ? Thx in advance.
Great review. My 3’s need a replacement. Based on your recommendation I’ll stick with what I know works (and love).
They are definitely my favorite of the 3.
I like your presentation. Really hits the information gaps I'm looking for when making a decision about these shoes.
Glad to help!
SO since you said "to the Moon", does that mean you also need to say NFA👀😂
I had to return model 3 back then, they were torn by the area where the fingers bend
That content the video was amazing! I am with the vapor 4, and I really appreciate the info you provided here. Thanks a lot.
I'm glad you found it helpful.
Would you still grab the vapor glove 3s over the tesla ones you review last year?
So I guess I will keep my vapor 2 until they disintegrate
Yes!
Great channel. During yoga a month ago I noticed a big-toe bunion developing, and stumbled on barefoot shoes in researching treatment. Saw the Vapor Glove 5s on sale and bought them two weeks ago.
Can't say the bunion has gone away, but the shoes rock and my spirits are high. My Vapor 5s are generally covering five miles a day on concrete and asphalt.
Thanks for your help in relearning to walk. As far as proper foot care, I also bought a footbath massager and some Epsom salts for nightly juvenation, so the dogs are gung-ho to go the next day.
Concerned about my northeast US Winter needs as I'm loving the stinky sockless life, but maybe with all the extra circulation in my expanded feet those fancy two-toed socks will be enough. Cheers
I have vapor glove 4 and vapor glove 3 luna. Vapor glove 3 luna are a little bit heavier and its sole is way tougher and way less flexible than vapor glove 4. I prefer 4 rather than 3 because I feel that my feet is touching the ground and not the sole only.
Thank you. Do you have anything to add? I'm considering both, I already tried the 4. They feel really natural. The three looks better, but i don't want to trade looks for comfort. Thanks
@@stephenvis I think the same, 3's are better looking. 4's are less durable but much more comfortable.
Thank you very much. Guess I’ll go with the 4’s, health over appearance! All the best
Vapor Glove 3 all the way. The only shoe I want on these feet. Wish they made the vapor glove 3 in all black.
Definitely harder to find the vapor glove 3 on the market now new or used.
Awesome review man
If you know a good place to find any of the vapor glove 3 variations (Standard, cotton, eco, etc) , definitely let me know.
Just bought vapor glove 3, black on DSW...buy now, $52 with Black Friday discount
Just bought a black pair of 3's at DSW
@@EugeneREhmann oh really!? Which model the cotton/ECO ones or the standard?
@@yochanman the standard
get buz. good luck. thx for review.
uh... "get buz" is maybe "go viral" !?
Do you have any opinion on the Merrell Move Glove? I usually wear Splay Athletics shoes what are quite wide and form fitting at the same time.
I’m looking for something with lateral cross training support.
Thank you!
I have a Vapor 4 and a Xero speed. I still think Merrell is still better for me.
Maybe on the five you could cut the tongue into a traditional tongue to prevent the bunching? Idk, I don't have them.
That os a good idea, im just not sure if structure of the sock would collapse.
My favorite pair of Merrel’s are what I believe to be a Vapor Glove 1 or 2 that was purchased 2012.
IMO, the best design and lasted forever. Do you have any signs on those at all?
I have tried to find them..but to no avail. My client still has her VG 2 and loves them so much, she only wears them indoor at the studio.
Thank you so much for doing this review. Exactly what I was looking for before I purchase!
What about the 2 and the 6 hahaha
... and I actually really like my "4s", use them even for pretty rocky mountain hiking. BUT: Never tried "3" or "5" so far, so I can´t weigh in on the comparison of course
What’s everyone’s picks for best athletic barefoot shoe? Gun to your head can only choose one.
@@GoatStoat thank you for the info
Ever tried the 2? Wondering if it ran big or small. Thinking if buying a used pair.
I have not tried the 2, But I have a client that still wears and swears by them, to this day. She said they fit true to size.
@@GrownandHealthy excellent, thanks for the response!
Missed the most important point of all. The vapour 4 is the closest u’ll ever get to actually running barefoot. Case closed.
Thanks, just the review I need. I love the 3s, saw 5s at 40$ on sale and instead will keep on the 3s, perfect on my feet. I want the natural width in the toe bed, most definitely no interference in arch I have a strong arch of my own.
Can I weightlift kettle bell with these shoes? Everyone wants the vivobarefoot but I want to support American brands.
I use a pair of 3’s for my kettlebell sessions. They work really well.
Damn. You are one hot guy! Easy to the eyes. ❤️
Thank you very much!
I love how nobody is saying the vapor glove 4 is the best - I have two pairs of those and both soles are wearing out substantially after less than a year of use. Have yet to try the vapor glove 5 but it definitely looks more durable than the 4
I have heard several say that the 4 is the best
First pick would be the Tsla 😂
Yes.
Awesome review. Thanks for the help. Made my decision a lot easier.
Great video bro
Glad you enjoyed
Liking the product analysis as a really good incite for what to expect in ownership. Thank you and great work!
awesome video! really well spoken, and great video quality and video effects. The closeup shots are really useful.
I've only hade the Vapor Glove 3, and I found there was not enough space for my big toe, even though I have thin feet and thin toes, and the toecap was too rough and hurt for days when I wear thin socks, and also the "stability mesh" on the pinky area was also too rigid and hurt my skin, so I don't use them, because I really like to have thin socks or even no socks.
The best I've found so far is the old Vibram Trek Ascent, bud I added padding to the heel and ankle area because it bruised my skin.
The Vapor Glove 5 looks like it solves these issues, but what worries me is the heel padding, it is not as good as in the Glove 3, and I think it would bruise my skin; so I don't think I'll buy it.
I'll wait for the Vapor Glove 6 to see if it looks better.
That was a very good comparison of the three models 👍
Thanks! 👍
Hi mate! I have one question, which one is wider at the front?
Will you try vapor glove 6?
The 5 is the widest. I will take a look at Vapor Glove 6, if it is a true barefoot shoe.
@@GrownandHealthy i have bought this week the vapor glove 6. Its my first barefoot show. Would be awesome you to review it! Thanks
Is the 3 or 5 wider in toebox?
Great review! I have multiple pairs of both the 3 and 4, but always went back to my 3s. I was looking forward to the next gen of these shoes, but I absolutely hate lace-related hotspots on the top of my feet…so the 5 is only an option for me if I manage find the perfect fit…THANKS!
Yes, it is annoying to have hotspots...they should re-issue the Vapor Glove 3 with more durable materials.
When yhis guy review vapor glove 4 and say this is better than 3 every coments was agre with him, now say otherwise and the same ppl agre with him LMAO
@@polishhamnr1469 This review is 2-3 years after my inital review of the 4's.. at the initial review, the changes in material were worth the switch but after a longer term, I preferred the 3, even with the defects.
thanks a lot !!!!!!!
Great review, fully agree. I have used VG3 and VG4, VG4 was disappointment after my loved VG3. Sole on VG4 really worn fast and less comfortable due to the shape of the toe box.
Totally agree
The 3 has a tiny bit of arch support tho, no one talks about that.. I just received a pair in the mail today
Although the used pair shown here seems to have it collapsed based on the footage. Arch support is clear on my new black suede vapor glove 3 luna.
*nubuck not suede
That is just the way the sole wraps around the shoe and it varies even from shoe to shoe. It will collapse with use.
Thanks for the great review of the Vapor Gloves 👍
