      I guess the general gist of it is that Cl is a spectator ion because the compound is a salt, so its kinda like the water where you can ignore it because it would be important. However yeah still a bit confusing on when or when not does this happen.

  • @joyofliving5352

    Hi teacher, could you do a tutorial for relationship between ionic strength and pka for weak electrolytes (including biological environments)? There's this consensus that an activity coefficient is required in practical terms to be able to calculate dissociation equilibrium constant - as solution departs from ideal behaviour. If you can derive the equations and do few examples, and indicate when low or high ionic strength may or may not affect pKa or pH, that's helpful.

    • @handersonhasseth132
      @handersonhasseth132 Рік тому

      You want to write an ionic equation and then a net ionic equation. Once you get it, you will see that Na+ is going to be on both sides of the equation and thus, it cancels out.

  • @ethkid8925
    @ethkid8925 3 роки тому +6

    You can calculate 1-4 much faster using pH = (-log(Ka)-log([HA])/2
    Alternatively you get pOH for Kb:
    pH = 14 - pOH
    and Ka = 10^-14/Kb

  • @stephenfajen5837
    @stephenfajen5837 2 роки тому +1

    Can someone explain why at 9:08 we can just cancel the x value. I get that he said that 10^-5 is small, but what does small mean? Is there a certain value where its considered too small to really be relevant? Can that x value just always be disregarded no matter the number?

    • @sewermonster6162
      @sewermonster6162 2 роки тому

      Basically, what happens is that if the x-value is found to be extremely small, then you can make an assumption that x won't throw your answer off by much and just disclude it from the equation.

    • @shahadmerani93
      @shahadmerani93 19 днів тому

      the value is so small that it doesn’t really affect the calculation, if you cancel the x you get an approximate result which is enough
