We manufacture jewelry (jewellery) by hand. In this video, we share some insight into the process of making an emerald ring. Enjoy.
I just pre-ordered my copy of “Traffic Secrets!” 😀
All I had to do was pay a tiny shipping charge. That’s it.

I've been making jewelry (Jewellery) completely by hand for over two decades now. This channel is for those who are passionate about the trade and looking for new solutions and tricks to better themselves. - Навчання та стиль
I live that. We don’t bind nothing in this shop we balance it. That’s the precision I’m working for
The way you lined up the bezel with the stone angles is exactly what I've been struggling with. Such a perfect solution. So glad i watched! (love the humor too!)
Thanks for that. I was hoping that someone would pick up a trick or two. I have new videos coming soon so keep watching
Very clear and easy to follow...well presented and enjoyable video. Many thanks for this posting Jaco. Lovely work too.

Subbed. I've been faceting stones for many years. Never made a single ring yet lol. People send me stuff to facet. Thanks for sharing.
Nice
You are very welcome. Thanks for that - I don't do a lot of setting video and will try to add a bit more in when the new videos come through.
Thank you. New material will be out soon so keep watching.
I'm from India and I'm a jeweller. Thanks for sharing your videos.
You are welcome Harsha, Im about to post more so keep watching
Great!!
Back on the channel John. Thanks for all the years of your being alive. What a friend you turned out to be. Much love.
I was quite surprised as the algorithm served me up your video and to find out that you are in SA. My best friend's wife and step-son are caretakers of a resort in The Kruger. Waiting upon completion of the USCIS paperwork. Also a good friend of the Atlanta area flew back from Dulles his plane upon retirement from SAA as a Captain and has been trapped in Cape Town when the border was shutdown. A few other friends throughout the country. I'm a hobby jeweller who enjoys casting and chainmaille, but RA keeps the latter scarce. I'm in Maryland, not far from the US Capitol. We regularly listen to Scott on Loving Life. How's it going for you in the quarantine? Sounds even more strict than ours! I'm using the Mondley App to try to learn Afrikaans going on 4 years now. I'm good with the vocabulary and phrases, but that gutteral pronunciation of hard sounds like when I failed 8th grade German. Practice is everything, right?
Shawn Jenkins - Hey Shawn, strange enough, even though I’m Afrikaans, I now reside in the UK. I actually grew up in a small town by the main gates of the Kruger park. I’m glad you enjoy the videos and good luck with the language buddy. My previous video starts off with a bit Afrikaans if you need some practice😁
This is called the human touch! Great!
LT Huddon Design nice
Thank. What a compliment. Hit the bell as I am about to post more videos.
Thank you!
Renee Ann Hebert nice
You are very welcome Renee, Im back on the channel and will be posting very soon.
Thank you for sharing! I would love to have seen you set the stone also ;)
Thanks Coleen, I will keep that in mind for when I do another one. Emeralds are pretty fragile, so I build the setting pretty accurate to avoid too much stress. And then avoid ultra sonic with them.
Nice
Nice
Buena pieza. Me hubiera gustado ver el montado de la piedra
Gracias. Sigue mirando ya que pronto publicaré nuevos videos. Agradezco los comentarios, tenga un gran día.
For those who were wondering; He used a burnisher to set the stone. (or at least I assume...)
Beautiful
Thanks so much. Very kind of you to say - I'm back on the channel and will be adding new videos soon.
👏
Спасибо. Я скоро выложу новые видео - я люблю русское мастерство. Вы, ребята, талантливы.
Very interesting. I am missing the part where the gem is fixed. Else than that : excellent!
Thanks, I will be posting new videos soon and will pay more attention to the set work.
You share some of the secrets, but not all of them. ;-) Excellent work. Is the band white gold? If so, did you plate the band using rhodium?
Hey Joe, Sorry for this very late reply, but Im back on the channel now and will be posting soon again. As for your question - I used to buy a very high paladium mix white gold that was so white that i ended up not plating at all. Now that I live in the UK I cant seem to get my hands on it anymore so I plate the white gold here. South Africa, as small as it is, has excellent metal suppliers who mixed each batch just for me and I miss that here.
Awesome!!!
Nice
Yo Andre, back on the channel buddy. Hope you guys are well that side -
Super work
Thanks Mohan. I'm back on the channel now and will be posting a lot more. Thanks for watching.

Vipinrajps Vipinrajps thanks - I’m glad you liked it
@@jacothejeweller I am from India in godsown contry... Could you please from you
its amazing. Masterpiece :)
what is that tool which you are applying solder?
Just
Thank you, I just used a solder pick from the local jewellery supplier - these days i use bicycle spokes and grind them to a sharp point.
soo beutifull good luck artist
Thank you for this.
How can do the ring... Whaaah you're a great
🙏🏻
What is the back of the setting? Is the back (under the stone) left open?
It is. I'm just about to add new videos - keep your eyes open for these. Lots more detail.
When did you set the stone? WHY would you not show that wonderful part? Beautiful ring, so sad the filming incomplete.
Hey Flying Chef. You have a great point. I should be filming the set work more often - I will take this onboard and add more footage in the new videos to come. I'm back on the channel now and learning fast. Thanks for watching.
Its hair raising.
Actual speed hey? Very funny! Hope it is only in goldsmithing 😜
Lol Marco, I'd be in trouble if I had to apply that speed to other matters. Thanks for watching - Im back in action here and will be posting soon.
thanks for sharing. I'd like to see the bending process of the ring. thanks
Thank you for watching the video first off. I haven't posted anything lately, but plan to do much more in the near future. Your comments help me structure the next installments and I'll be sure to address the different bending techniques just for you.
Nice! Thanks. I’m looking forward to your next posts
+Jaco Jordaan For me too please.
i like your "Actual Speed" :0)))))
Great work. Simple & Elegant..
LOVE how you made the Bezel Cup (if that's what it's called?).
Thanks for sharing
what is the tool he was using? what is the name of the redpen?
Hey Felix, thanks for watching. The 'red pen' is a solder pick. But you can use a sharpened bicycle spoke - works great!
how do you cut the actual seat inside the bezel for the stone to sit on, as it consists of angles?
Ruth Thomson - hey Ruth, the cutting is the same as any other setting shape. The only tricky part would be the corners. The section that you can’t reach with the usual diamond shape cutter can be cut with a small ball cutter. I spend a lot of thine making sure that the stone sits snug. This makes the setting much easier. Hope that helped. Enjoy your day and have a look at my Instagram page - jacothejeweller for more tips.
Jaco many thanks for your clear reply here. Will look at your Instagram page too ..thanks again.
how much is the typical value of that beautiful ring with emerald?
This one was made for a family member, so the value is nowhere where it should have been. I made this ring in my studio in South Africa and would cost more in a 1st word country like England - where I now work - as the economy is much stronger. The money lies in the stone here and you can spend pretty much anything here. In British pounds I'd imagine you would pay around £2000 in today's value.
How long did it take to make this ring?
Hi Ibrahim, it all depends on your skill level. But for me, if I had to estimate today, I’d set 10 hours aside. Perhaps 8 if you work effortlessly.
Thank you very much for sharing and I'm proud to become a subscriber.
Thank you, Cory
Cory Streat - that’s very kind Cory. I haven’t had the time to upload in such a long time but I’ll be working towards new material in the near future. Thank you and welcome aboard.
what is that pen u used for soldering?
Hey there. I'm using a solder pick that I bought from our local Jewellery tool supplier. It's basically a hard plastic handle with a disposable screw in tip. I usually just sharpen a bicycle spoke. On platinum you need cobalt or similar. Hope this helps. Cheers.
I'd prefer to see more details and more process if it possible...
Im now back on the channel and will be posting real soon - keep watching
Beautiful, but I cant actually tell (because you're not showing the underside) how the bezel is is sitting on the shank. You soldered the two shank ends together, and then rest the bezel on top of that?? I can't see what you've done.
All of these comments are helping me to make better videos - keep watching and i will do my best to get the best videos out to help - Thanks for watching
what kind of solder is used on this?
meanmachine usually for gold during fabrication I was taught to use medium. Over multiple heatings and any reflowing the solder sheds some of its alloying material ( copper and silver is what I used to alloy) due to the fact that the sulphuric acid pickle etches it out. Easy solder is usually reserved for repairs.
As an aside you can also make a thin sheet of 16 karat gold and use that also. The flow point for lower golds is enough that they can be used to solder. Or weld depending on your application.
He says it in the video lol 18ct yellow hard then medium
Hey Alan, I use hard 18ct solder for the first solder here. I work my way downwards but try and keep the solder as high as possible.
what is the machine called that you use to shape the gold?
Flex Media - a rolling mill or just known as a roller.
Jaco Jordaan thanks man. any ideas where I can get one for. and how much do they usually run for.?
Designing souls be as I stated below.
Nice
When tempering non-ferrous metals in the air, they receive only 50-65% of the holidays. When cooling a metal in water, giving it a temperature shock, the non-ferrous metal is released 100%. This is physics about non-ferrous metals.
Nice
Thanks for that. I learn all the time and will take it onboard. Thanks for the feedback.
Holidays???
no showing the setting of the stone? whats up with that holmes?
I have had a few guys and girls ask that very question - I am about to post new vids and for the next one that i make, I promise to include some set work. Thanks for watching.
@@jacothejeweller jw. I've been goldsmithing myself for over ten years now. Thanks for the info
