    Hiya, and thank you both for a great video. Yes, please, to the list of what is safe in the ultrasonic and what is not. There are very few reference works showing anything like this, so any lists showing anything that will help us not damage our work would be great.
    Stay safe, Steve.

    Very helpful for a new self taught jeweler! I’ve been hacking away at my pieces during the polishing process 😭😂

    Thank you for this! As a hobby jeweler polishing has been one of my biggest hurdles and this video demystified it tremendously.

    Hi, I bought a gold pendant (mase custom for me) when I received it- it had already so many scratches on it is this normal? or did the jeweler not polish it correctly? Is this something that can be fixed without polishing away the engraving that is on the pendant?

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi, that sounds like it can definitely be polished out but it’s hard to tell without seeing it. I don’t personally let jewellery go without making sure that there are no marks on the surface but everyone has their own thing. I would raise the issue with your jeweller and see how they can help out. Good luck 👍🏻

    can you safely polish over the opal?

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  4 місяці тому

      @@caseadillas I would recommend to polish around stones on the bench. Once you have the stone area polished, you move over to the bigger mops. Opals are very sensitive and I’d suggest treating them with care. Think about the whole process like a fine tuning in reverse. Any small or delicate areas first and then the bigger machine for the rest 👍🏻

    How much gold is lost during the process of sanding and polishing?

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  Рік тому

      I aim for under 10% for making an item from scratch - so the sanding would be a very small fraction. But still, over polishing of customer gold can reduce the weight over time so I’d encourage not to polish the same piece more than twice a year to extend longevity.

    That steam machine had me worried for a second, I've always wondered if you can use one of them with opal

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  Рік тому

      You are correct to be worried 😂 they are super delicate but this one survived.

    When I polish I only go straight to the polish machine and it's faster with a decent bright.

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  Рік тому

      I find that I’m better able to preserve the detail in the work when I ‘pre-polish’ and refine as I go along. 😊

    Could you make a video about the different types of mops? Stitched, felt, etc, and what each is best for?
    Also, love the ring, and the detail below the setting - how did you make it?

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  7 місяців тому +2

      We’ve started talking about this as a result of your comment and we’ll be doing a video about the different mops soon! Thank you.
      Also, I made this one years ago for my daughter - but we didn’t record it. We’ll be looking at clusters in the future for sure - this particular ring was very special… 18ct rose gold, opal with diamonds.

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  8 місяців тому +3

      Ohh. That sounds like a lot. More sanding with finer paper will at least mean that your gold stays on the premises.
