No comments..really ? O.K. here goes -: The timbers of the Pub Old White Bear in Norwood Green were from the ship that sailed against the Spanish Armada. The name came from the ship. As told me as a child. Coley Hall at one time was abandoned . The owners left, leaving everything . My father went at the insistence of my brother and sister. children had destroyed nearly everything playing inside. My Father salvaged a painting that he got rid of .EVIL . The story was the place was haunted.( the painting was worth a fortune but kids had defaced it) This is before i was born. Oliver Cromwell stayed one night there My Father was a keen historian and gained the confidence of the farmer who owned in the accompanying field .He dug where the cows came to drink because he was tired of water building up and causing a cesspool . He found a secret passage that went to the Hall. He stopped half way because he was afraid the land might be taken away from him. There was always a tale going back that Cromwell buried treasure in the Hall ( or in a tunnel ?) This is not recorded but our folk lore . This is something I never divulged to anyone (sorry farmer) getting old! Information i got from Dad over 50 years ago. Needs to be recorded for prosperity. Brought up in Norwood Green. My School had 33 people in it. I had 18 in my class. The year before my entrance to the school they demolished the wall separating girls from boys. There were gas lamps in the street and no electricity long after everyone else had access to this amenity . The village is in the Doomsday book. We had one post office two local shops , one at the top and one at the bottom of the village. There was a coal mine i believe many years ago. All children had to choose between Church of England or a type of Methodist. We all attended one or the other.Religion was our youth club A bus came once an hour, stopped at 10 non on Sunday , oh nearly forgot ..we had a butcher. When you went round Priestley Green they had old stone troughs used for watering your horses or donkeys (before cars). Coley Church was built on land used for worship 1000 years ago. My house was at the entrance to the woods and my teacher showed me, when i was little, the Roman roads that now has the streams running over them. Fantastic childhood and memories. Norwood Green, Priestley Green, Coley ,and Lightcliffe.!
thank you for that information ;-) i lived for 21 years at coley road, and went for many walks around there - lots of history connected to it, but it's nice to hear personal experiences too!
By gum, this brings back some memories. My family lived in the area for hundreds of years and I grew up in Coley. One correction though. In the old photograph at 8:51 the building you have marked as Coley Vicarage is the Brown Horse, the Vicarage doesn't appear in the photo, which must have been taken from Common Woodhead.
hi yes, it's a bit confusing actually - the above old image was 'taken from brown horse window' so it's on brighouse/denholme road looking over at the side of coley, so this photo looks over at the old vicarage ( now two apartments with a cottage connected at the side) - i lived on coley road for 22 years from 1972, and even i took some time working out the angle!😅
What surprised me on hipperholme all video on just one side no video on woods or broads of lane ends green farms at end of Woods go all way to halifax but no mention historical cottages and houses
This was one of my first ones, and yes, i did miss quite a bit out on that area, and i didn't go into too much detail and history back then ;-) (I may do some time in the future)🤗
Our milk came from the cows in the fields around us. When the cows got ¨free¨we used to help round them up and tell our farmer. The bottles arrived every morning bright and early on our doorstep. In winter the birds pecked the foil tops for the cream which was always on top( no skimmed then). We learned to hold out our hands for the cows to suck on them, and say cush cush to make them move. We knew the law of the land. If your dog got free and ¨worried¨ the cows sheep etc; the farmer shot them, and that was accepted part of rural life.As was walk ways with ancient styes marking boundaries that only locals knew how access to the farmers fields for short cut home . The best time was harvest. Golden fields. Golden moments that stay with the poem Autumn by John Keats. Which we learned as 8 year olds as we did The Hobbit Lord of the rings Lord of the Flies Alice in Wonderland Alice through the looking glass and poems that go on like a river. I could recite The Pied Piper Of Hamlin to the end.
A belated thank you very much.
