I know. I grew up with pictures of shibdon hall in our home. My dad is related by a cousin of Anne & Marian. I've always wanted to visit. It's on my bucket list. I can't believe they didn't renue for season 3. They left us hanging. They have all these ridiculous series on HBO that they kept, but won't continue with season 3 or 4 of Gentleman Jack. It makes no sense 😕
I'm glued to the drama GENTLEMAN JACK! Brilliant cast and dialogue, and beautiful scenery. Suranne's portrayal of Anne Lister is a real tour de force performance!
Absolutely spectacular place ! What a joy it must be to actually be working there or just wander around the place and think of all the people who've lived there.
I grew up with old photos of shibdon gracing on side of our hallways. My mothers ancestors castles in Ireland on the other. My dad's family is from Queensbury. I can't remember how it goes now, but he's related to the listers by way of a cousin. My mom's family decended from Ireland and came to the US in the early 1900's. Going to shibdon has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. My whole family was thrilled when they filmed Gentleman Jack. We've been sorely saddened by the fact that they aren't renuing for season 3. I hope they change their minds. For those who don't know, when Anne passed away, she was still with Ann Walker. But it took over 6 MNTHS to get her body back to shibdon. Back then they were just dabbling with embalming via the arteries. Ann walker wanted Anne lister well preserved, so she spared no expense to have Anne brought back to Halifax in good condition. Her funeral was so big it lined the streets. Thousands of people from all walks of life came to wish her farewell. She was loved and well liked by everyone. From what my dad has told me, even those who didn't like her did like her if than makes sense. She was respected. So sad how she passed away... but while alive, she sure did live!!
@@MT-kx2uc what about all the natural grease that occurs on ones hand. There is a reason they use cloth gloves in museums, to stop natural oils degrading the material
Luckily, you are misstaken! I have used many archives and learned that most curators consider gloves a poor choice, because they diminish one's finger top sensation -- which, in turn causes accidents. Degreasing your hands with a thorough wash seems therefore much safer.
@FREEDOM LIGHTRIDER Wow leaving such a nice comment and not getting that it´s a freaking TV references! You must be fun in real life somewhat not getting that this is quoted from "Gentleman Jack" - new BBC Show currently on BBC and HBO. Watch the trailer.
WHERES HER FAMILY? SURELY THEY ARENT ALL DEAD SEEING AS THOUGH THEY'VE BEEN IN THE AREA FOR OVER 500 YRS? WHO GAVE PERMISSION TO EVEN SEARCH WITHIN THE WALLS?? THESE THINGS ARENT EVER DISCUSSED. WHY DOES EVERYONES RIGHTFUL INHERITANCE OR LIFES WORK ALWAYS GET CONFISCATED AND MADE INTO A "MUSEUM"?
Semiramis Bonaparte unfortunately the last Lister declared bankruptcy in 1923, was bought by a local councillor and bequeathed to the people of Halifax as a public gardens and park. Calderdale council maintain it now.
If you want to know what happens to a Historical Property, if not turned into a Museum (not an "Amusement Park" as stated), then look up Hanworth Park House, in Hanworth, Greater London. It's criminal what's happened to that place. It would be nice if their local Council had cared enough to look after it, once they'd taken it on. Now it's in private hands, and the Community are working with the owner, who also wants to save the place, but the Council are stopping a lot of the work, so it's all got really messy. But... it show's what can happen, if a place and it's history, are left and not taken up by Council's and Trusts.
Wow someome who thinks my thoughts, as much as i like history and appreciate that "living history" with this i cant help but think that it was a house that people had relations and private matters in yet now its an amusement facility. Even though the previous owners arent alive i cant help but think, I wouldnt want my home to be like this in a 100 years time (even though im not important or rich so no one would hahaha)
I know Sally W, my ex lives in the same Farm when She is home, and my next door neighbour is the Lady in the vid talking about the diaries being found in the wall LOL, small World
They actually filmed the Gentleman Jack series here! I love how HBO kept it real!!
BBC ;)
BBC. HBO money.
thankfully they kept it real!

Suranne Jones is doing a great job as Gentleman Jack, i look foreward to every episode, love the little Flea Bag style looks into the camera.
oh yeah me too, now that you mention it.
I think those are meant to be moments when she would be making comments in her journals as we would be the readers.
“Doing a great job” is quite the understatement

Must see this house after watching ‘Gentleman Jack’ - it looks an amazing place - well done Calderdale Council!

I often went here when I was little, then took my children too, and I still visit when I go back to Halifax
No doubt there'll be a lot more footfall after Gentleman Jack has been screened on BBC1.
Jane Sheehan It’s driving my new lust for a York vacation.
I really wish I could visit Shibden Hall,..
Surely he should of been wearing gloves when handling her diary? Very strange
If you look closely though, he does not touch the actual pages with his fingers - rather points to a sentence or word. I do agree with you though.
Hope I can visit Shibden after the pandemic
Muchas gracias por dar a conocer estos lugares tan hermosos! Yo quisiera trabajar en un lugar así.
I bet Anne would be thrilled to know it still survives and thrives.
Awesome beautiful and wish we could visit this beautiful place some day..
Oh how I would love to visit 😍💕
Me too. It looks fascinating and atmospheric.
3:17 its anoying me to hell that hes not wearing gloves handling that book

Great video.
thank you ,, i enjoyed the video,,;)
They forgot to mention she is the first one (written) that is proof of Lesbian realtionships ;)
I doubt they forgot. There was really no need to mention it.
this video was uploaded in 2016 before the show. i'm guessing they were still keeping that on the down low back then.
I swear sounds like Shipton Hall.
I will visit it in August :)
@Arizona 007 I'll also be visiting sometime in August. See you! 🙂
shabby little Shibden :D

#Brave #AnneLister
I still need to sort out a visit when all this madness is over in the world
Why not many info about Ann Walker?
this video was made and uploaded in 2016 and the show wasn't out then so at the time she was just one of many who owned it.
Wonderful
I would love to visit. What is the closest city one could fly into?
Leeds Bradford.
If you like he Bronte sisters there house and museum is in West Yorkshire too. So wort visiting Howorth and Hebden Bridge
@@emilyb5278 Yes, I love the Bronte sisters.
Wars, poverty, serfdoms all suitable for public print; love between two humans we gotta hide in the walls...the human condition is tricky.
Estaría bueno q lo interpretarán en español
This is a three years video, and has no, yet appear on my recommendation
Who is the Green Lady. And why does she still haunt?
Id love to visit
It reminds me of Stan Hywett Hall in Ohio
Thoughts on the weather, social events and business interests....and nothing else? 😛
Did I just see Jimmy Saville
must make a lesbian crusade there
Welp this is awkward THE WATERHOUSE FAMLY 1:20

A lot are also handed to national trust as in these days they cant afford to staff and maintain them. The days of 100 shillings a year wages are gone!
The diaries were found by one of her more recent relations and then returned to the walls. Nothing has been confiscated!
Here here, i totally agree

Not quite on the same level as Alton Towers though, where the gardens and history are rotting away :(
No, just a park with a museum in it.
Lori Kettle did you see a different video?
