Remembering that the Roman legionary is inspired by the comitatensis of the late Roman Empire, it should be a shared unit of the Romans/Byzantines and the Byzantine cataphract should use a long spear instead of a sword.
@@navinkumarpk86 Apart from this historical error, the video's scenario was perfect! It's a shame that the developers don't look at the people who remade it and if they're not careful, they could call them to work with them.
What we need badly now is for this mod to be made into a real building set. If Catbarf is not around anymore, his model can be used as inspiration for a Byzantine building set which could be used by Byzantines/Bulgars/Armenians/Georgians.
@@navinkumarpk86 I think Byzantines had a greco/roman style. The rest, Bulgars/Armenians/Georgians had their own unique styles but didn't look like the Byzantines.
What I love about this is that unlike so many reskins mods this keeps the basic Age of Empire II building Silhouettes and design philosophies in place. I.E Walls, Castles and Towers need to share styles, Barracks need to be a long two story house with a courtyard surrounded by walls, , Market is a tall building with a courtyard surrounded by stalls , etc. etc. So many reskins mods make all the buildings historically accurate but break the building style to the point where it's not recognizable at a glance anymore.
I've been playing aoe2 since the very beginning. I always thought it was a shame to have the Byzantines so undifferentiated from the rest. This mod is definitely THE mod AoE needed. The only problem is that every other Mediterranean civilization will change architecture accordingly (or at least i think, as i still have to download it). However it's crazy they didn't set a unique style for the Byzantines when they developed the game. PS: i really hope this mod gets covered by the devs in the next patches...
Said it once and will say it again here as well. Catbarf was more a pixel artist so his texture work leaves something to be desired. The houses can be better since they are based on the middle eastern set. The castle can definately be better, it just feel wrong adding that skinny round tower in the corner and that "hip"roof style. The are way too many Western Roman elements I feel like, A set for the Bulgarians but with a unique castle can work as well given how some stylistic architectural themes overlap.
OMG! They changed the voice lines as well?!? I hear greek voices! If that's true they finally fixed one of the most historical inaccuracies in the game!
Why? Latin Was also used... Justinan and Belisarius where native Latin speakers for example. Only thing that should change is the name to medieval Rome or eastern Rome, name byzantine is historically inaccurate as such civilization never existed.

By the time of Justinian Latin was still in use although only for official documents probably, the eastern empire has always spoken greek. Flavius Pietrus Sabbatius Justinianus is often regarded as the last native Latin speaker or even "Ultimus romanorum" for a reason, he was a Roman from the Balkans, arguably like Phocas shortly after. From Heraclius on even the official language was changed to Greek since at that point the empire lost all provinces where Latin was still spoken, except for Africa and Italy but they would not last for long anyway and by the time of Leo III no emperor assumed Latin names anymore (the last was Tiberius Apsimaros) and coins were struck in greek only. To me Byzantines is fine but also Greeks or even Hellenes would make sense. Romaioi just means Romans in Greek and an early medieval Roman civ has been already added recently.
