Im so glad you did this Taylor! We have very similar tones and this sold me on getting the HX stomp. IVE WANTED THAT TONE BUT NOT HAVING TO LUG AROUND A 5150.
8:21 The entire reason I got this was so I could go direct into the house PA and not have to lug around a combo anymore. Do people still gig with 4x12 cabs anymore? I think it's been at least a decade since I've seen a real half stack on stage. "But I need sTagE VolUMe!!" That's what the monitors are for.
A lot of people do not know how to select IRs that fit the amp. Instead of tweaking the amp endlessly, scroll through the IRs until you get one that sounds how you think it should. I talked about this in my 10 min tone Rectifier video. The IR should be articulate, and have the chugs you want. Cab is legit like 60% of the tone. Great video buddy!
Thanks! 🙌 it is a huge chunk of the tone. I honestly didnt think any of the cabs in the hx stomp really fit the 5150. Maybe that's why people were requesting I dial it in...
@@TaylorDanley I refuse to use stock cabs on helix. There is so much more depth with Impulse responses. I am pretty partial to ML sound lab personally.
i'm getting a stomp (in white) for xmas, and i need all the help i can get (i heard update 3.0 is out which adds more stuff and expands it to 8 blocks). thanks for showing us this. also, thanks for the IR's
For me, the best way to use a Helix/Stomp/Go is as a Preamp Amp into real cabs. Two years now and I love it. Recording is different of course but I have mic'd the caps using the Helix to success.
Bro, I don't understand how this pedal works. Can I connect this to a cabinet directly? Do I have to still use an amp ? I want to buy this so I don't have carry a heavy ass amp. Would any cabinet or pa system allow this thing to work? Also, what are the purposes of the foot switches? Can I switch amps through it quickly? Thanks and sorry many questions, but I am in Japan and have to take trains.. need something light
Yeah, too much noise gate.. I was having a hard time with it because the guitar I was using has new springs and they are SUPER noisy! You can sort of hear them at the end.
And literally after subscribing and watching your Nux - MG30 review, I have found this video! I would be interested to hear your thoughts... I would be playing/listening back via headphones, would the tone/overall sound be comparable to what you eventually dialed in or not at all?
Ahhh. Catching up on some of your vids. I'm going to go nuts trying to figure out what modeler to use. 😂.. Interesting in the description you said thru the PA it sounded terrible.. I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the Gigboard because it's soooo easy to use with 11 blocks and a 7" inch display, or one of the atomic amps. Either the 6 or better yet the 12, or the Stryman Iridium which everyone says feels most like a real tube amp which is important to me. I can't really justify the AxeFx even though I like it's feel and sound better than anything I've heard. The closest I've heard is the Atomic and Iridium, but the later doesn't have many amp models, so I want to get all those good 80s amps such as Soldano, 5150, and I want the friedman if possible, power amp sag control, eq, and some reverb and or delay.. I don't think that's too much to ask. 😂 So, if you have time and availability, please do a review of the Stryman, the Atomic, and the Iridium if you haven't already? I've not seen those vids on your channel at least? To be honest I was not impressed with this tone compared to the real thing. I've played a real 5150 quite a bit. This at least thru headphones sounds a little, I don't know. Plasticky to me.. Thanks for sharing.
Taylor, the dropbox link you gave only has a few files that have a .prst extension not .hlx and there's not a preset called 5150. Are there supposed to be Ir's also?
Thanks! Global EQ is the EQ for the unit, affecting all patches. IMO a necessity for using any modeler through a power amp/ cabinet so you can cut out the weord artificial high end they produce without having to use a block and set it on each individual patch
Quick question, would you happen to remember which software version you used for this video? I’m currently running the 3.15 and it’s like there’s just not enough gain no matter what amp I use
Hello Taylor. Please help me. On the amplifier, you raised the low frequencies (see video). is this helped make the sound fatter? My problem is that when using transistor amplifiers, the sound is not as thick as a tube amplifier. How did you deal with this problem? It is important that this is for playing through a real guitar cabinet. Thanks for the answer
Recently I haven't been very pleased with the hotone support service (lot of issues with the editor software). So based on overall tone and what not, how would you put this against the ampero?
It's a step up. More tonal control in a lot of scenarios. The global eq is a huge plus to be able to hi and low pass when running into a power amplifier as well
it's cool you released this on the same day as Fluff's amp sim from ML Sound Lab, which has a free EVH 5150 EL34 emulation when you download it. and it sounds pretty similar to the tone you got! :D
I'd like a video dialing a EVH5150III on the Ampero, it's an amazing sound (I love Gojira) but for me still being difficult to get it. Thanks a lot for your videos, was very important for make the decision to buy my Ampero
Awesome video similar playing style to my own so this videos much better then the rest because I want to hear a good heavy tone example! But one question I see u aren’t using a cab block which I wouldn’t either a good power amp to a real cab is the best to get a realistic amp in the room feel and sound but are using the full amp model or just the pre amp model?
Sweet! Full amp model, the power amp I use is solid state, so its flat response (no coloring). I do have a tube amp that I use sometimes... if I run that, then I only use the preamp
Taylor Danley thanks man I realized once I watched the video again it was the full model because the resonance was available to adjust. But thanks man this helped a lot just started tweaking on my set up I got an hx stomp going to a Duncan powerstage 170 to an EVH 4x12 and it’s already sounding awesome!!!
I own a 5150 III, 6505+, a Kemper Stage, AX8, and Helix LT. - The 5150 of the Helix, is no where near as good as the emulations in the AX8. In fact, it's very tough to dial in. For Rhythms, you can get that old school Carcass tone, ok'ish. But when playing leads, the attack on single notes is very artificial and choked. You can work with it, but you have to dial it in so nuanced and exact, to make it feel ok. - The worst rock/metal sim on the Helix, imo. Badonk, Mark IV, & Rev, are the very good ones.
I also noticed the choked notes on the pick attack. Here's a tip, use the minotaur pedal on the helix and keep the level high on it while also add a bit of gain to taste. This alleviated the pick attack for me on the 5150 sim in the Helix. I also have an AX8, and yes, the pick attack on that sim is more buttery for sure.
Because high gain amps don’t actually sound good unless you boost them. When someone buys a 5150 or something brand new, they should be given a free ts9 or something
@@AFN2750 Hahahahahahaha. I guess I haven’t owned enough high gain amps. I know the 5150 iii’s I have don’t need one. I wish they had a built in noise gate myself.
