My guitarist and I toured for a full decade on a dual rec, and a 6505+ respectively. Now we’re old and both run into one helix rack. I’m not missing the heads as much as I thought! The helix is so good.
Where can I see reviews that arn't a guy alone in a room? I have no problem with the tone of my stereo10w amp for alone in a room type playing, but I need to fig out whats required to have a power trio, A 2x12 palamino we picked up cheap disapears when blastbeats are rollin, I'm frustrated with these guys playing alone in a room no YT, that I think since I'm not a musician and never moving i should get a 100w head and 4x12 cause the kids I knew with bands all had those and at least I know that works. I'd like to think i made a smart move but NONE of the reviews i see have any kind of practical demo with the mic 10ft away and bass and drummer chugging.
@@johanjotun1647 ah man yeah I understand. I guess as a dude who has had both I can say the power amp you use can be a bigger challenge than the preamp. I like the helix but you can use so many great preamps and modelers. The Duncan powerstage is just loud enough, the blackstar amped one is loud enough, the orange pedal baby is SUPER loud. If you want the 100 watt 412 thing, there really isn’t anything exactly like it though. Just remember speakers are king.
@johanjotun1647 Jeff Loomis used a Helix rack into a duncan powerstage for a time with Archenemy. I have a Helix Lt and run it into a power amp from This Heavy Earth into a 2x12 and have no problem being heard with my band.
I profiled my single rectifier with my TONEX and I run that into the Helix FX loop. I played a gig last night and the other guitarists swarmed the stage after we played trying to figure out what I was using because we sounded huge. Amazing how far technology has come.

My HX Stomp XL was probably my favorite music gear purchase of the last decade. I have plenty of tube amps, analog pedals, cabinets, and all that but the convenience of the HX Stomp is what really draws me to it. I can just plug and play (even with headphones) and have tons of effects and tones right at my finger tips. It’s really helped open up my creativity.
One of my favorite things to do is to try to tone match some of my favorite pedals/amps/tones in the HX. Really helps train my ear.
When you punch a Line 6 amp model and it does exactly the right thing :
Quietly, under your breath, say "Thank you, Ben".
Ben is a good guy, and has marvelous taste in pickles.
the valve driver is a butler tube drive emulation. either way, it sounded good.
i've been using the stomp since it's introduction. stomp > isp power amp > cab. as well as my bass rig, stomp > FOH. never ceases to amaze me. my approach was the same as it was on the POD HD. gate, 808, parallel compression, engl fireball, gate, EQ. completely unstoppable, and the very few patch changes i did were super easy while singing because i had 3 whole buttons in front of me.
no one seemed to like the 5150 model. not sure if it's just THEIR amp or what. they explained that their 800 had the bright cap removed, and that's why it sounds different. they also put out 2 different RAT models after they realized the one they'd been modeling for so long was actually broken. goes to show that 2 amps off the assembly line can sound different.
the cab update was a huge upgrade, but it's still their weakest link. i shouldn't be able to make better IR's in my one bedroom apartment :D
but all-in-all, yeah, an incredible value
This is one of the best investment a guitarist can make, it can be a standalone rig, it can be an fx pedal for your amp, all the effects sound great and the amp modeling sounds great, I use mine along with my tone x. Hx stomp for all effects and tone x for the amps. Sometimes I’ll do a dual amp rig with the amps in the stomp plus the tone x on the fx loop of the hx stomp.
"Rectal Fryer" is the best name ever for a sim. Maybe if you hit it with a "Gristle Ring" pedal, it'll be the epitome of "your shit sounds like ass". Ola style.
Interesting Kyle's take on the 5150 and Soldano. As far as rich harmonic content goes, my Soldano preset NAILS it. Pinch harmonics have a depth/timbre and clarity just like on the real head. Bear in mind I'm running through my FRFR setup, and had to audition a handful of impulse responses to achieve success. As far as the 5150, idk man it could be a bit off but it's easily fixed with eq/ pre post. I have a kickass heartwork/Carcass preset that will crush your genitals. Great video as always Kyle, again, your ear & dial in was on point sir!
I love my Orange super crush 100 and line 6 pod go into the return FX loop with two 4x12s and honestly, it's gotten some arguments from people saying it's better or worse. It's awesome and haven't had ANY issues with my setup. ever.
Since I discovered your channel I don’t miss a video… Just wanted to say hello from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean
I’ve used a Helix LT as my only guitar amp/pedalbord for years now running through monitors. I still remember sitting down at GC and playing the 5150 patch someone had already made and I made up my mind having owned a 5150. I’m still evolving and trying new things.
Great video, thanks a lot, Kyle!!
Kyle! Love the vids. I just bought an fm3 and it’s on the way, I also have a 5150 that I plan on using for the power section to run the fm3 through for the time being. When I do that though I have no control over the volume. My question is, how are you controlling the output of the amp? Via the helix?
You, using the words 'tubby and congested', got my sub... Best description of the sound too much gain can induce, and I've not heard it put like that before. Spot on!
🤟😎🤘
I have the fractal fm 3. I’m getting use to it. ❤
Loved my HX stomp, its what totally sold me on modellers. I made the jump into fractal after that and never looked back.
Heads up just thought I’d chime in as a quilter owner. Putting a dummy plug in the fxsend when running straight into the return greatly increases the overall output volume. Kurt from converge mentions it in his rig rundown video. Some weird idosyncosy about the circuit. So I highly recommend trying that out.
Great indepth and value! Best demo on the HX Stomp amp section by far! Sweetwater invested their money well!
Thanx for the EXC shout out Kyle! Real tube amps are obviously king but the helix quilter combo is great when traveling with a tube head is out of the question. Love the sounds you got from that set up!
Appreciate ya, man. I picked Scott's brain on this a bit back and it inspired this video. Great little travel rig that doesn't sacrifice much in the way of tone!
The Mark IV on the Helix/HX Stomp is one of the best out there, sounds godly through your setup!
lacks balls compared to the real thing
@@asianaxeman
And the Stomp isn't meant to sound anything like the real thing lol
@@asianaxeman I have a Boogie MKIV , a Kemper Powerhead, and HX Stomp. The only profile I use on my Kemper is the one I made of my MKIV, the HX Stomp's MKIV is "ok"...until you throw som 3rd party IR's (Ownhammer) for instance, TOTALLY changes it, in the mix, it's pretty darn close..SERIOUSLY..it took a bit of tweeking on a preset I purchased, added my favorite Ownhammer IR (412 recto V30 OS) and it has the same midrangy bounce (..I go for Sevendust-Dark New Day Clint Lowery kind of sound..) Again, this is in the mix, or through monitors..When it comes to "moving air" at a live band volume, through a powered pedal, or even going through the fx return of a tube amp, it sounds really good, but not the same "feel or bounce", but great tone nonetheless. Travelling? can't beat the Stomp for all in one. Is it the end all replacement for the tube amp? Depends on your needs...There is NOTHING like running thru the MKIV at band volume..the chewey hairy goodness (..like starting up a Harley in your living room..), the Kemper and these modelers are a great alternative when you can't go balls out with "The Rig,"
@@sb6232 chewy hairy goodness is a great description
I have a fractal fm3 and I love it into the oiwer sectuib if my XXX. It is OK through a QSC speaker (with cab / power amp modeling on) but the tube power amp is more fun in the room.
In the demos I've heard of the line 6 stuff, the Badonk model has more of the 5150-like midrange punch than their 5150 model. Usually the 5150 model would be the first thing I'd reach for, on these it would be the badonk. Sometimes there's something to be said for not trying to copy an existing product and instead just going for the most bad@55 sound possible
Bro... Awesome monitors you have there! :)
There are so many options out there now for amp/multi effects units, but It's amazing to see how much better the new Line 6 stuff is now compared to the old and not close to real sounding oldest Pod stuff.
Real subtle Kyle lmao would that happen to be anchovy pizza? It's so Monday I was like, hey, I also love pizza.. master of disguise just like Clark Kent.. 😁
Love your stuff, please could you review the kma pylon gate please! I would love to hear your opinion!
Thanks so much! For reasons I don't want to get into, I will not be reviewing any KMA equipment, though.
How do you connect the Stomp up to the power section of the EVH? I have an EVH Stealth and was thinking about getting the Stomp but would like to use my real cabs still.
My straight edge brother XXX
In my experience as long as it goes through a tube power amp into a real cab it sounds amazing
I use it with the full amp head (i.e. with the power amp) models into a Powerstage 170 - so damn good!
Damn bro, this SLO IS EVIL ❤ gotta replay and check settings
So would you rather have a HX Stomp or a Friedman IR-X?
I had a GT-1000core but I’ve gone back to just a Marshall and 3-5 pedals.
Problem with the modellers aren’t their multitude of options, but me being faced with them.
I make my Marshall family friendly by running into a load and IR and then headphones.
Isn’t the HX Valve Driver a model of the BK Butler tube driver? Not a BB preamp?
We all listen to way more badass guitar tones by our own admission, that are also not tube ,than we care to admit sometimes.....my super crush is one of them, actually my favorite amp at the moment
For sure. Orange nailed it!
I went with The Headrush Core its less then a year old at $799 new $650 used. I like the bigger 7in touch screen. It's a great option in comparison with the HX.
Do you get to keep it?
What about the Fractal Audio FM3 ?
Saw earth crisis years ago- Gammorahs season ends. Pretty badass song
Love the symphony of 2:33 destruction references in the first excerpt bah bah bump bum bum bum bah bah bump
That SLO patch has a very Slayer vibe going for it.
As long as the amp sims go into power amp and real cab - it sounds really, really close to real amp and the air is moving :D
agreed!
Freaking algorithm keeps hiding your videos from me. Definitely wanted to hear your take on this!
Would be great if you share your presents! Sounds great! 👍🏼
If I can figure out how, I definitely will!
You need the HX Edit on your computer. Then you can export the presets easily from the HX Stomp to the computer. Also editing is more easy.
I've heard the Helix or the Stomp sound great with the Fryette Power Station.
Everything sounds good with the powerstation LOL
The stomp sounds good. Klye, I have a JEL modded 2204 that needs some tweeking. Can you recommend a ultra high gain amp tech? I'm looking to add another tube gain stage. Live in Wisconsin. Thanks, I'm a tube amp guy. They feel differently than digital.
Shea of Monomyth Amplification would be a good start!
@@belligerentamateur thanks do you have an email for him. I can't find one.
So... I have the 50watt Stealth. I have modeler boards including one based on the hx stomp. I have neglected to use the stealth as a power amp for the modelers because it doesn't have a master volume control. So if you plug direct into the return, does it sound different if you run the amp on the blue, green, or red channels? Theoretically you would be bypassing the preamp but the amp only has pre-amp volume controls which effect the tone.
make sure volume on your preamp/modeler starts all the way down and only bring it up to what you want.
@@blitzkrieg3238 My concern was with the fact that the EVH Stealth only has preamp volume controls. Most amps also have a "Master" volume to give you general volume for the power amp but the EVH does not. If you raise the volume on your preamp, you color your tone.
I'm starting to think the amp heads will be the at home practice amp while the digital pedals will be the gig rigs.
At home enjoyment and recording.
Isn't it already like this? Digital is lightweight, smaller, easier to handle in a live setting, inexpensive, and sonically identical in a livemix.
For me, there is almost no reason to drag a tube amp onstage except for a big ego.
Already
dids you have to add a +24db gain to any of the preamps? someone told me line 6 did a thing to try and level them, been having a issue with the rockerverb being very low output.
Nope! Didn't add any sort of volume boost to the preamp models at all
What's the first LTD guitar you were playing ?
Esp ltd bk-600
For years I felt digital Amp Sims did not have the low end that two have when you palm you on a tube Amp it moves the speakers and pushes a lot of air. Amp sims with IR’s Just couldn’t do it. I still have yet to try running a power amp with one of these units but at the same time I feel that the newer updates they’ve been doing for the last year on line 6 and fractal audio products have now come very close to mimicking that low end that they were missing for so many years.
And that low end is what you don't need in a guitar tone in the mix.
That's just a selfish wish guitarists of the 80s metal freeks have. Which also includes me but I've grown out of it after learning some sound engineer things.
+
modelers aren't modeling amps alone, but rather modeling miked up amps, which never sound the same as an amp alone.
So they are doing what they are supposed to do and you are asking for what they aren't meant to do and calling them good or bad.
I would not recommend running cabinet models in your chain when running into a power amp of any kind into real guitar speakers. The cabinet models are best when routing a signal for front of house. That way, you don't need to run a mic'd cab on stage. Front of house gets a nice consistent signal and your stage sound isn't nerfed by modeling the sound of a mic'd cab into a cab.
Sounds great
thanks man!
Umhh... you used the 2204 preamp model, but told us it was the 2203 amp model.
He also said the Kinky Boost is based on the BB Preamp, but it's actually the EP Preamp
Ask Sweetwater for the Quilter Overdrive 202. That’s their high gain amp since you already have the ToneBlock
Quilter actually sent me one last week!
Yeah ! Two Bamps !
I would love to hear a comparison between this and the newest Ampero. People have been praising that one since its release.
I have the Stage II, and can honestly say it is top tier
Can you blend amps on the HX STOMP?
Since the 3.5 firmware, yes. Just can't go crazy on other blocks, or you can max the processing out. Stomp IS half the horsepower of the big Helix.
Can it be plugged into the front of an amp that doesn't have an effects loop?
every modeler can but its one of those "it depends" for what level of usefulness it has. Are you planning on bypassing the preamps models and just using stomp boxes? does your amp also have a fx loop? if it does you can use the "4 cable method" or you can bypass your amps preamp state and just run amp models through the fx return (which is how kyle has it going through that evh power stage). Its generally going to sound bad when you run a amp model -> through a real amps preamp -> and then its output/ speaker cab.
Also a big mistake modeler noobs make is leave the "IR's" (impulse response) on when it plugged to a guitar amp already going through a real speaker cab. The IR's are design to emulate a speakers voicing like when recording direct. If you have a really clean, high headroom amp....then you should be totally fine running a modeler, but be mindful that its not going to sound accurate or what might be considered "good" when downloading presets. If you're forced, then you have to tune in the presets for your exact amp.
Thank you for your response. I want to try it through an old tube amp, with no effects loop. I suppose I'm worried mainly about the signal being too hot to plug into the front of an amp, but there's probably a way to adjust that. I would think there would be.
@@sirgerbilmacintosh9101 Depending on the power of the amp and how clean it is. You can probably counter any unintended breakup by lowering the modelers master volume and turning up master volume (if it has one) on the tube amp. Treat it like a boost pedal when it comes this, in my experience, pretty much all modern modelers have a good amount overall gain so they can definitely can overdrive an amp even on a clean preset!.
Aside from that you get so much value from a modeler. I think the only con with them is that sometimes people just want plug and play and don't want to tinker. With a setup like yours you may have to tinker quite a bit. though the interfaces are getting much easier!
Good luck!
Converge and Kurt play helix live so it must be good.
I've owned this bad boy for years and to be honest, for an "amp" they're just okay IMO but I don't do really high gain stuff with mine. It was always modern rock and some classic rock cover stuff and that mid-gain crunch is where most modelers and profilers can suffer and where even half decent tube amps are much better.
I still use it from time to time but for the longest period, I used it as my main FX unit on my board going to the loop of my Jubilee or Splawn and for that, it's unbeatable IMO. The power, size, ease of use on stage and with the software and overall quality of the effects make it a no-brainer for that use.
As for using it as an amp, I'm not impressed with the built in cab/speaker sim. My own IR's sounded way better and running it into the OX Stomp sounds even better.
I read somewhere if you take the 5150 model and turn the bias all the way off or almost off (cold) it sounds and feels way more like a real 5150. I dont have an actual 5150 to compare it to but I do like it better with the bias turned to like 1 or 1.5
Very interesting I’m going to try that tomorrow night.
Just dropping by to say how sick your riffs have gotten

I have a HX Stomp XL and love it.
The 5150 model on the helix is the most disappointing to me. LOVE the Friedman though.
The 5150 on the Headrush MX5 also is very disappointing. It sounds like a blanket or something is draped over it,even when using IRs.
They modeled the invective head though which is dope.
Over on the sonic drive studio channel he A/Bs the helix and a 6505 and they're pretty much indistinguishable. The Panama is also Jeff Loomis' favorite amp in the Helix so it might be worth revisiting

funny you posted this today, I just bought an HX Stomp a few days ago. I ended up returning it and getting a full Helix instead (used)- couldn't stand the tiny screen.

Do the Line 6 Pod next - make that one chug, for science!
Would sound exactly the same
Hey, you and that 5150, get a room!!!
I did horrible, terrible things to it already.
Oh if those tubes could speak. The horror, the horror…

My man, you've demo'd the Stomp with 3 year old firmware.
Busted my HX Stomp out from closet a few days ago. It is killer!
Best tone on the channel yet except for your Pitbull LOL!
RIP Eddie Sutton LEEWAY btw :(
How are you going to Hear a Pedal like the stomp in a ThrashDjent Power trio situation? I need to get somehing with enough balls that it sounds good from 10 ft away standing infront of kickdrums and Holychina.
You run it through some kind of power amp and cab, or powered FRFR AND/OR FOH.
IMO Tonex is mutch betted for basic HxC tones
I’m the person who finds the tone lol
Definitely....tube amp replacement
Wait, you didn't try the badonk amp model? Blasphemy!
I did! very end of the video 😂
Doh!!! I have the patience of a lamp.
I stopped using L6 when n they started going overseas to China. I had a Vetta II years ago hen they were made in California. No thanks now.
Id rather have a US made product and prefer the feel and vibe of a real amp.
Check the GT1000 core. I more closer to the real thing than Helix.
Is it "THE BEST " one ,,, did you get "THE BEST " One yet 👶🎤🙏👶🎤🙏
Every time I see one of these modeler versus amp comparisons, the result is the same. Of course the modeler sounds great at room level and directed-outed into whatever software is ultimately responsible for its playback on UA-cam. In that context, modelers are indistinguishable from full blown tube amps. However, turn one of the modelers up when you're in the room standing in front of the cabinet and it loses against the tube amp quickly, especially for clean tones. For this reason I suspect the modelers work really well with in-ears. But they fall short coming out of a cabinet in three-dimensional space.
This is just not true. What is even the context for “losing” especially for a clean tone? I’ve AB’d the helix in a room with multiple tube amps, and power sections. Any amount of differences were negligible and largely dependent on the type of power being used. It might not be for you, but any concept that any modeler “loses” to any tube amp is guitar rabble-rousing. There are just more options now.
I sold it and now I regret...
Why you sold it and why you regret?
what you should try is NAM or at least tonex. you almost wouldn’t be able to tell the difference with the real amp. helix is 2015 tech. come on
I have multiple videos on tonex. come on.
this is SO not helping my GAS Kyle 😅😂 I'm so torn between the xl stomp, Kemper player, NuX, and tonex, just as a travel and silent practice rig.
Sounds buzzy and empty.
Oh great another computer accesory disguised as a pedal. Here's an idea use real amps and pedals if you want real sounds, if you want computer generated simulations of what the computers then play with your computer instead of your guitar. no wonder people are not practicing guitar because they spend more time on computers and computer accessories.
2024 rig rundown are making me very sad, grown musicians and very young ones playing a plastic box
It’s a metal box. Thank you very much
This reminds me of all the old timers bad mouthing distortion pedals and saying “just git yerself a Marshall and put it on 10 and that’s all the gain you’d ever need!” Things change. Some people miss rotary phones too.
For about the last 10 years, there have been digital modelers that have ultimately nailed the tube texture, fizz and definition to near 100% authenticity. My Zoom G5 has a tube in it, but even without the tube switched on, it's there.
As you said, there's some lacking saturation and when you *really* crank them, it won't go into ridiculous bug wings fizzle like valves tend to, but it will be here within the next couple years.
I’ve had one for about 2yrs now and I probably only use about 3% of it’s capabilities…but I’m an idiot 🫤
