I love your teachings on Silhouette Studio, I downloaded it and tried to self teach I ended up giving up. I would love to see more. You are very talented, thank you for great content.
The crosshatch pattern worked great. I did tighten the hatch I couldn’t see any lines skipped. I used an anodized aluminum disc. I was going to use the lines but after seeing your video you saved me time and materials. Thank you! Your coaster should say I don’t Cricut without silhouette design. 😉
If you want to get rid of the lines, use a fiberglass brush. You can put fiberglass bristles in a mechanical pencil to use it on small projects. This works on plastics. You can also use a fine file like the ones used in jewelry making or electronics. These will work for metal or wood.
I have a Cricut Maker and just purchased a Silhouette Cameo 4 and love to see you doing Silhouette Studio as well as Cricut Design Space! Because I’m new with Silhouette I really enjoy your video today!!
Thank you for this tutorial! I was going crazy trying the replicate the hatches in Illustrator, but this convinced me I just needed to take the plunge on Silhouette Studio. In fact, I have an engraving project going right now. I'm excited to see how it turns out!
This is so informative! I have been very intimidated by the engraving tool and this gave me the confidence to try. But by far the best part for me was your amazing instruction on silhouette studio and saving files for exporting to design space! I didn’t know I could do that and you just changed my crafting game!! Thank you Karley!
Thanks sooo much. I use Silhouette software all the time to create art for my Cricut. I think Silhouette's software excels in the same way Cricut Maker's use of materials excel. Thanks for not making me feel like a "crafting polygamist" for using both to reach my project goals. I'm checking out the laser cutter you mentioned, too, and bookmarking your video for when I have time to engrave. I've had a Silhouette for quite a while. I bought a Cricut first, but it began mis-feeding the mat one week after the warranty ran out. That was added frustration because the machine sat unused for the first few months until I had time to sit down and learn how to use it. Cricut wouldn't extend the warranty a week, so between barely getting to use it, and no support, I went with Silhouette for my replacement. I loved Silhouette because I didn't have to buy cartridges. It's software is awesome, particularly the upgraded versions and it does things I could only do in Adobe Illustrator otherwise. However, lately, I've begun to miss not being able to use all the different materials Cricut Maker allows for, so I'm giving Cricut another chance. I bought the Maker. I've already cut fabric and I'm very happy with the results. I just hope the Maker lasts as long as my now aging Silhouette. I look forward to checking out your other videos.
I’ve been using silhouette for near on 7 years now, and had no idea I could do some of those things 😂, I’m terrible for not using that software lol thanks for the video, I’m jumping ship and getting a maker soon! Can’t wait!!!!

I am glad you shared this with us and Cricut. It is now May 31, did Cricut get back to you?? I am not buying their machine until it's working precisely.
I followed up, but I assumed there has been limited time to test since the cricut headquarters are still observing social distancing guidelines and most employees can’t go to the office. :/ I should clarify that the engraving tool works great! In this video, I’m teaching a “hack.” I assume cricut will eventually come out with their own vector fill technology that will work. I like hacking things, but this is not recommended by cricut.

Thanks Karley, really creative idea to engrave with a pattern fill. This was my first look at the Silhouette software. I would like to see more tutorials showing how to use Silhouette Studio.
Such a great video, thanks. I have a Silhouette and a Cricut Maker. I always love how easy it is to offset text in Silhouette. I can't understand why Cricut doesn't have an offset. I've battled with my DS and pc for over a year, because my Windows 10 pc (4gb RAM), it's just not fast enough. I have an iMac on order. Looking at the speed of yours - it should be so much better. May I ask how many gb RAM your laptop has please? Thanks in advance x
I have some acrylic blanks that are just a tad less thick than yours (2.4mm/.24cm) and I haven't tried running it through the machine, but if I just lay it on the mat and put it up to the rollers, it doesn't look like it will go under. Should I just try it? I don't want to ruin my Maker.
I would love to learn more about Silhouette..I have Silhouette Business Edition and a Cricut Maker..I am very interested in learning and incorporating the two
Just purchased my maker so I’m watching all of these videos to prepare myself 😂. I knew that it wanted to try the engrave feature. But I didn’t know that I’d need to use silhouette.

Awesome video with specific instruction for using the software....best video for the Circuit Maker I've seen in a while. Keep making videos combining both various materials and the software process. As a beginner Cricut Maker crafter, I went from not knowing how to do engraving and 25:05 minutes I went from dumb to pro. Thanks.
Siri Nitya technically you can use glass, but I don’t risk putting glass in my machine. Wood and iron on won’t work! But metals will! Anodized aluminum works great :)
Can you tell me what you use the silhouette program versus what comes with circuit design studio? I use a macbook & when I look for that silhouette app it defaults to the curious design studio. Thanks & I loved your video!
Hi I just bought my cricut maker. And have so many craft ideas. Can you do an engraving but with some artwork instead of words? That's my plan and I'd love some tips on how to perfect it. Love your youtube and have already learned so much!
Thank you soooo much for this video!!! I’ve been a Cricut Fan for Years!!! There are some functions in Silhouette that I have seen lately that I love! I didn’t not know that you could save the text as an SVG and import the image into Design Space 🤯. I guess I’ll purchase the business edition. I hope that Cricut comes out with an update with some of the features you showed us!
Yes! If you have business edition, you can save your creations as an SVG! It’s really helpful if you create design and need to send them to other people!
Background: I have zero idea about engraving/vinyl. I started to research cnc machines (diode lasers) at the same time wanting a machine for vinyl heat transfers to t-shirts for our business. You can imagine how my head is spinning. I think cricut 1 is going to be purchased. But the software is overwhelming by your video. So question: Why do you use another software to make the engrave saying, and not just use cricut software? Anything and everything you could help/ point me to (maybe cricut for beginners 101) would be great. Looking at engraving and also making heat vinyl transfers for heat press t-shirts
The Cricut software is limited. So I am unable to do what I need in it, but can use other design programs to do what I need. I would recommend a cricut for vinyl and heat transfer vinyl- but would not recommend it for engraving. I’d recommend the glowforge for engraving. glowforge.us/r/ZGVHHUNH
Great tutorial. Very informative and easy to follow and understand. Haven’t gotten my maker yet but wanting to learn as much as I can before I start using it when I do get it. Subscribed and thanks again 😊

this video earned you a subscriber. You did a great job in explaining, and also were so honest in pointing out the defects. Those lines would drive me nuts; I am too much of a perfectionist like OCD overload. lol anyway, I hope cricut will fix the issue, because for my personal preference those lines ruin the project. Thank you again,
Hey Karley, I think maybe the orientation of your lines in the image need to be at an angle, looks like all your lines are going the same direction so I'm hoping this helps! Just a guess though so don't hold me to it 😅
It does help to put them at an angle, but it helps the most to space them out more. Unfortunately I like my lines horizontal and tight- but cricut doesn’t like that 😫
@@KarleyHall so I tried overlapping two layers of lines, one set of lines perpendicular to the other, and I really think this helped: imgur.com/gallery/Vq4iILu?fbclid=IwAR2-sfNEk1b1rhpKWDELSZ7XDH00KANwVQ-Vw8WbE9vh5CQJREruPTkjSrk
Hello, I am curious, since you have a Glowforge Laser Machine and a Cricut Maker, would you engrave on the laser machine in the future instead of the Cricut? It takes less time and doesn't leave the line gaps where the tool rotated? I just bought a Cricut but haven't used it yet. I love laser machines and used to use mine (pre-Covid) when the library's maker's space is open. I was thinking of investing in the laser machine for home use since the library's machine is not often available. Thanks
Social Crafting Collective oh yes! I always engrave with my laser! But since most of my subscribers own Cricut machines, I wanted to show this technique :)
New to Cricut and don’t know what tools go which which housing eg the engraving tool goes with the scoring housing. Also what jobs use which tools? Complete basics for some, but don’t want to buy equipment I don’t need. Thanks
Do you think it's possible to engrave deep enough on acrylic to use as stamps for patterns on clay? I'm just wondering how long this design took and if the machine could handle something that detailed.
Hi, thank you so much for this amazing project! I wanted to ask if you have heard back from Cricut? I am doing my research before buying one. thank you :)
It’s nice to see cricut does engraving, but the lines would bug me so much. My uncle had an engraving shop in the 90s and I helped him in the shop. So we had the big ole laser engraving equipment for engraving on wood, acrylic etc. We had a sandblasting machine to do all the etching on glass etc. When my uncle decided to close up shop permanently, he offered everything for $10k, I wish we wouldn’t taken the offer, but at time, we were not in that position. I miss my uncle dearly.
@@KarleyHall unfortunately it's a known issue with silhouette, and there is no amount of updating that's going to fix it until they actually fix the issue within the app. those of us with hiDPI (retina) displays get to experience a pixellated Design Studio (fun!). According to their CS, they've been "working on it" since the first retina macbooks dropped in 2013, so I'm not holding my breath. Weird how every other software on the planet managed to figure out retina displays but not Silhouette!
I got the same thickness of blank and I’m having issues with the residue scratching the blank. I’ve tried blowing it away with a sprayer like you and brushing the metal roller while it works. Do you have the same problem? I can’t find any other blanks that are thinner
HI there, thank you for your video. I have tried the 1/8 inch acrylic and unfortunately it doesn't fit under the cricut maker. The star wheels are moved over. The link you put under your video for blanks doesn't go anywhere. I did see the one for the vinyl people selling theirs but it is 1/8 of an inch . That is 3mm. It will not fit in the Cricut maker. Help!! I just bought the mat and the engraving tool and and was excited in anticipating making gifts. Do you know of any other suppliers? Thank you for any help!
@@KarleyHall I'm sorry for being so dense, but, when I see a totally filled in font I do not see lines in the font. I'm not talking about outlined ones. So, that is what I need help with, I cannot tell if they used lines to fill it in and if they did is that not what we want anyway? I am so confused by your last answer
@@suestracks When you see a filled font, imaginee the cut path your machine will follow. It would only cut the outline, but since there is material, it appears to be filled in. Those lines would drive me nuts; I am too much of a perfectionist like OCD overload. lol
anyway, I hope cricut will fix the issue, because for my personal preference those lines ruin the project.
Unfortunately I like my lines horizontal and tight- but cricut doesn’t like that 😫
@@KarleyHall so I tried overlapping two layers of lines, one set of lines perpendicular to the other, and I really think this helped:

More Silhouette Studio tutorials!
Where did you get your storage units to the right of you?
I wonder if you do a "2nd cut" if the inconsistencies would disappear.
It definitely helps!
Thanks
wlb wlb all of the links to the products are in the video description! Let me know if you need more help!
Do you think it's possible to engrave deep enough on acrylic to use as stamps for patterns on clay? I'm just wondering how long this design took and if the machine could handle something that detailed.
I would recommend a glowforge for that. The blade on the cricut would get stuck.

You have other tutorials for silhouette?
What machine would you recommend me to buy..... Though thanks so much
Hi, thank you so much for this amazing project! I wanted to ask if you have heard back from Cricut? I am doing my research before buying one. thank you :)
Yea, there was some lines in there. I would paint over it as you suggest. I won't be able to sell it. I am so upset with Cricut.
When my uncle
decided to close up shop permanently, he offered everything for $10k, I wish we wouldn’t taken the offer, but at time, we were not in that position. I miss my uncle dearly.
i'm jealous of you and your non-blurry silhouette design studio :( stupid thing is blurry beyond comprehension on my macbook!
Are you using the latest version? It may be time for an update!
Hey, great video.
Can I only save as an SVG with Business Edition?
I have basic edition and it won't let me save an SVG
Thanks.
Kezia
Yes- you need business edition! I have a link in the video description so you can upgrade for $62.99!
I got cricut maker 3 . Can you use a ipad doing engraving
Yes please to the tutorials, thank you
Hi Karley! Do you need to have a subscription to use the cricut maker? Or you can use the machine without any subscription? Thanks!
No subscription is necessary!
Did you try to load it in? It's deceptive and looks like it will not fit-- but they do :)
great video - just getting started! Which laser cutter do you have? Couldn't find the link - thanks!
Laser Cutter/ Glowforge: glowforge.us/r/ZGVHHUNH I have the pro version!
May I know how to fix the little line? Thank you.
Such an informative tutorial, thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Always interested in finding new things to make with my Cricut. Very informative.
Great tutorial, thank you. Could you use a font that is already solid?
Most fonts that appear “solid” will only engrave as an outline. But if the font is solid because it’s filled in with lines, then yes! That’ll work!
@@KarleyHall How would I know the difference?
When you engrave- if it’s just an outline, it’s won’t be filled, but if you see lines filling the letter in, it’ll be filled in :)
Does that make sense? ua-cam.com/video/Coi_hxBaVWQ/v-deo.html I think I do a better job explaining this concept in this video :)
what the app name for doing the writing before u upload it on cricut plz
Silhouette studio business edition! It’s linked in the video description and usually on sale using that link!
Could I do this to my sunglasses for logo?
