Clamshell Box Part 1

This neat little folding clamshell box (also called a drop spine box) makes a great container for a special book or set of books. It’s also perfect as a portfolio box, holding separate images. The fact that one side is completely open once you open it up makes it very easy to get items in and out.

If you're tired of cutting bookboard by hand (particularly the thicker bookboard used for making boxes and slipcases) this inexpensive guillotine works wonderfully and is a real time and hand-saver.

You can also buy wheat starch to make your bookcloth paste. This has the gluten removed which makes it a bit more resistant to insects. (Not that I've ever had an issue with insects eating my books :)

Thanks, Teresa! I agree about the spacer. You could just measure this out or eyeball the space, but the spacer makes it quick and perfect.

Thank you so much for sharing! I would like to make one that is quite large, 65cm in length for a large manuscript. Should I use a thicker kind of board, or even wood for the lower part to make it more steardy? :)

May I ask what thickness in mm is the cardboard and does it not warp after drying? Thanks

The bookboard I used for this was 2mm thick. The Lineco Binder's board that I use says .208cm or .082in on the label (no measurements in mm) but I measured mine and it is 2mm. (Here's a link to what I use: amzn.to/2XxAVmT).
The board will warp a little bit when you apply paper or bookcloth to one side but it evens itself out after you apply paper or bookcloth to the other side. I also put everything under weight while it dries just to ensure everything dries flat. You want to use good quality bookboard for this box. If you use cheap chipboard it will almost certainly warp.

The worksheets on my website are in both metric and imperial measurements. The videos are only in imperial measurements, because that's the system I use.
