  • 2024 Cost Breakdown Update: • Here's The Cost To Bui...
    Here's Every Dollar I Spent On My Lifted 4runner:// I've been getting a lot of messages and comments asking how much the mods on my 4runner cost, so I thought I'd make a video breaking everything down. I converted all of the prices to USD based on the current exchange rate, not the one from the time I purchased them. I also didn't include the cost of labor, taxes, or shipping because that will be different for everyone.
    If for some reason you want to duplicate my exact 4runner, this is the recipe.

    This is such an amazing vehicle. 99 percent of the population has no idea how good of a vehicle the 4th gen 4runner is, especially the 4.7 v8 and that drivetrain. It’s basically a land cruiser as it was built on the international land cruiser Prado platform. I want one very similar to this and similar builds, but I want an 09 as it was the last 4th gen year and they gave it a true rear locking differential, as opposed to the limited slip sensen locker in all previous years.
    Thanks for translating that into US dollars for us Americans. You got a phenomenal deal on that truck! I live just north of colorado, and that truck in this area with the 4.7 and limited, and around only 100k miles, people would be asking $20 US dollars, and would probably get $18 for it. The demand here is crazy for Toyota 4x4s.
    I’ve seen a lot of guys replace the stock headers with the Doug thorleys due to the stock headers cracking, but I thought that was mainly on the tundras as they were built in the us. I literally want to do the same thing, replace the headers but keep the quiet stock exhaust as I’m not a fan of loud exhausts. Did you notice any power increase or change in fuel economy with the headers? I read they are supposed to add around 15 hp?

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  5 років тому +4

      This was a cool era for small V8 SUVs in general. 4runners, Grand Cherokees and even some Pathfinders were offered with V8s which was a pretty awesome recipe. Too bad the automakers have gone a different direction now :( I'm happy with the deal I got on mine but pricing is really weird on used 4runners. It really depends on your region. Up here where they use a ton of road salt, Toyota trucks don't hold their value as much because they're known to rust. Out west however, they might as well be made out of gold.
      The manifolds crack on all the 4.7s - tundras, 4runners, gx470s, lx470s etc. The advertised gains from Doug Thorley can be a bit confusing. They claim +30 hp and +30 tq which is true, but not at the peak readings on the dyno graph. It's all in the mid range. Regular driveability feels more lively but adding these headers won't mean your 4runner will make 300hp. Hope that makes sense.
      I've seen an improvement of 1-2mpg depending on conditions which basically cancels out the losses from the lift and heavy tires. Now my modded 4runner gets similar fuel economy to a stock one but with more power and capability. If you want to read more about the headers, I have a review of them here: bit.ly/2pRUOB8

    • @philiptaylor2567
      @philiptaylor2567 5 років тому +3

      Canadian Gearhead I read your review. That’s a great mid range improvement and I would say worth every penny. I bet the power curve sits slightly above stock right after idle and peaks where you mentioned between 3000-4000, and then tapers off toward the end of the rpm range? Up here in the mountains that power would be very beneficial for passing on the highway or cruising up a mountain pass.
      Have you ever looked at the rotex supercharger for sale by URD for your truck? It’s specific for 06-09 4.7 4runners, and it’s a direct bolt on unit. They claim from their dyno testing gains of 150 hp and 150 lb/ft torque at the rear wheel, at just 6 psi! As far as I know they still sell it.
      Edit: They still have it, but they changed their numbers a bit. They claim 100 RWHP and 100 RWTQ at 5.5 psi. It’s a rotex supercharger, $5785. Here’s a link

    So in my case if I were to have a shop do everything it would be around $22k in total including the cost of the car. You get a V8 and it’s a 1/3 of the price for a trd pro. In Vegas they go for about $60k before taxes, etc. I see this as an absolute win!

    This is probably my favorite fourth gen 4runner that I’ve ever seen! Nice job! Couple questions for you if you have a moment:
    1. What is your wheel offset?
    2. What trimming did you do to fit those 285/70R17‘s on there, and do you have/could you make a video on it?
    3. How much Lift are you sitting at right now? I noticed you don’t have aftermarket upper control arms.
    I’m trying to help my sister get hers built up like this, but unfortunately, I’m in Alaska and she’s in Colorado, so right now we’re doing it all long-distance. We just got it lifted with BILSTEIN‘ S but we’re working on tire size for her next replacement. A video walking her through the trimming needed for that size of tire would be much appreciated! So even if she has somebody else do it, at least she knows what she’s looking for. Thanks again, and again, great looking rig!

    I bought a 2022 4R TRD Off-road last year. I spent 6 months driving it and wasn't overly happy with it on the highway. I commute 100 kms each way to work about 10 days per month. The 4.0 was a pig on the hills. Sold it and found a 2006 V8 limited one owner with 230,000 kms. Aside from the frame being soft under the passenger's seat from the AC drain dumping water there it is like a new truck. I fixed the frame and have fallen in love with this V8 4Runner. My plan was to use this on my days off and drive a Camry or Accord back and forth to work. After driving the V8 for a month and seeing these 4.7s last up to a million miles in the states I've decided to use it as my daily driver until I retire in 4 years. This V8 4R is more fun to drive than the brand new $65,000 V6 I had. I will be putting the DT headers on in the spring. I'm tempted to look for a 100 series LC in Arizona or California in a few years.

    Love your 4th gen, and you make me tempted to get my paint corrected and treated. On the other hand, I know it'll just get scratched up again while off-roading, so it's a bit of a tough call. lol

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  5 років тому

      I'm a fan of keeping as much clear coat on off road vehicles as possible. I was careful to remove the least amount possible while still getting the look I was after but I can understand that the level of upkeep it requires going forward isn't for everyone. Using something like HD Speed after a wheeling trip might be a good compromise if you want to freshen it up without going too crazy

    Love the video man The one that I picked up Monday is a '03 SR5 and so far the four days that I've owned it I love it I used to have a 1980 Toyota truck four-wheel drive and that thing would go through anything Love the mods on it I really want to get mine looking as sharp as yours your runner look s super sharp mine is white with the gray plastic trim on the outside which is really faded so I don't know what I'm going to do to get it back looking really good also it was towed behind a camper or a RV so it has all kinds of rock chips in the front but it'll get there eventually just takes time wish I could send you a picture of it bubba but keep up the good videos man

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  3 роки тому +1

    Looks good. I have an '03 Limited. I went with the Bilstein 6112/5160 combo and kept the rear air. While not as lifted as yours, I really like the ability to raise and lower the rear end. I'm also running the Duratracs, but on Tundra/Sequoia split 5 spoke rims. Managed to get a pair of LED taillights from a wrecker down in Odessa, Texas, when I was there and brought them back in my carry-on bag. The security guy was somewhat curious about it when he scanned my bag, but it was one of the best "easy" mods I did and it only cost around $130 CDN.

    Nice vid Tim! Your rig is super clean looking. Fun to watch since mine is the same color as yours so I can see what mine would look like with the same mods. Also, mine is the SR5 V6 so there's some other differences...like mine has way too much chrome! I could see doing the plastidip on my grill and wheels, but what about the door handles? Seems like it would get rubbed off on a part that you're grabbing like a door handle. I wonder if I could get the colored handles from a junkyard vehicle? Anyway, thanks again for sharing your setup.

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  5 років тому

      Thanks John, glad you found it helpful. I agree, plastidip will probably wear off on points of contact like the door handles. Finding some junkyard handles would probably be the best option, or maybe take yours off and have them painted? I wouldn't think a body shop would charge much to do that if you spend the time removing them first. The other option would be wrapping them in vinyl which would probably hold up better than plastidip.

    If you are still monitoring this post, can you share what percentage tint you used for your side windows. • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  4 роки тому

      I did a video recently on oil spraying the undercarriage, check it out. The tailgates on these are known for rusting (mine is too) so there's not a lot you can do there. The spots around the windshield likely started out as rock chips - it's always a good idea to touch them up if there's any bare metal exposed
