idgaf what anybody else thinks, this rendition made me feel a certain way and that feeling was absolutely beautiful. I thank Steve Porcaro for writing this beautiful song, Michael Jackson for making it popular and Jacob and the Metropole Orkest for that absolutely stunning interpretation. :)
Being an audio engineer I can shed a bit of light on whats happening here. In concerts like this there'll be a complex system of digital or analog splits to make sure the audio is going everywhere it needs to (house, monitors, broadcast, recording). Sometimes, especially when digital networks like dante are involved these splits don't always work perfectly. I'm virtually certain whats happened here is that the broadcast engineer, who’s mixing what we’re hearing, (at least for the first minute or so) doesn't have the vocal microphone patched to their desk. What you're hearing is the vocal being fed in from the ambient microphones out in the audience, picking it up from the main PA in the room (as the desk mixing for the audience has it connected). I've no idea who the engineer is but I'd say he/she did a fantastic job, the rest of the mix sounds beautiful, they did as good a job as could have been expected without the main vocal feed, and the system techs got it patched quickly. Everyone slating the engineer is jumping to a simple but wrong conclusion
Thanks for the detailed explanation of what goes on behind the scenes. We usually take it for granted all we see is a finished product forgetting that it takes a team to make something this phenomenal to work 👏
@@photicsonar Obviously the 500 and 350 people that liked the comments saying the mix was poop. And us sound technicians cant argue with imbeciles that dont get what is going on. And somehow we have to let out the truth?
I heard this performance years ago and it touched my soul in ways I cannot describe. I can confirm that three years later, the effect hasn’t worn off. This is, to me, the best cover of the song. It’s Jacob Collier’s superb talent and musicianship in combination with the orchestra that create such an emotional atmosphere. Incredible, truly.
Love this @jacobcollier. Not even the technical difficulties can dampen your skills. Then the 2:21 synth voice drop was pure bliss. Wish it was a single.
I grew up in love with this song.. I loved Jacob's version.. A tribute doesn't have to be a note for note recreation. That's not what musicians expect from each other as tribute. Fellow MJ fans need to chill out..
Reminds me of the scene from Amadeus where Mozart immediately recreates Salieri's piece and then innovates on it. Imitation is flattery, but an individual take on a theme is mastery.
When this crazy world is getting me down, it's good to be reminded of all the wonderful, creative, human beings there are on the planet ! Good on ya Jacob Collier & Metropole Orkestre.
This must have been a euphoric performance to have been part of, whether on stage or in the audience. I feel nostalgic when I watch concert videos like this. It reminds me of a world where hundreds of people physically made magic happen on that stage, and thousands of people actually spent an entire evening to be there and immerse themselves in this magical atmosphere. I really hope, once vaccines are universally available and this pandemic ends, music concerts will happen again. And Jacob Collier, I'll be there when you hit my part of the world. Love, love, love!
This legit made me cry because “Human Nature” by the one and only Micheal Jackson is my favorite song of his and one of three of my favorite songs ever. The song in its OG form is so euphoric already which means when an orchestra gets a hold of it…it’s over lol! This a song where if you’re going to cover it, you better bring it. Micheal Jackson who was a true lover of humanities/arts would love this and be absolutely so honored. I have no idea who this young man is or this orchestra but they did that. Listening to this I was completely transported into another realm and you know what? That’s exactly what music is supposed to do for you. This is stunning. 3:28 ugh!! That little part sounds like something from a romantic movie or the sound the plays in your head when you like someone lol!
I have admittedly only just discovered Jacob Collier, and am now suitably obsessed with his mind-blowing musical talent and rage. it is extraordinary. Imagine him and Price getting together, Jesus.....OMG...fablous talents...
This brings back such happy memories in a time of my life. I was privileged to be one of the spectators to celebrate the amazing work of Quincy Jones. Still get goosebumps thinking that I was there on that evening. Something I will cherish forever

He's such a talented guy. Watched him twice at North Sea Jazz Festival. 2016 solo and 2017 together with Metropole Orkest and Cory Henry. Amazing! And he is such a nice and shy guy. Great, would love to see him more often!
I was there that night to watch it! how awesome this was. keep up the great work Jacob, I'm a huuge fan of yours. And even better that your mum played in the orchestra with you that night!🎹🎹😁🎻🎻🎼
beautiful rendition of this song. Miss Michael Jackson so much and what his music brought to the world despite his personal demons. Jacob C thank you for honoring a legend and u sir are definitely a musical genius
I thought the performance sounded great. He sang naturally at the beginning just to show he could do it. After the ambient electronics came in, it got even more exciting.
It sounds totally NEW to me. new experience and so exciting ! Ilove it . If he sung without the vocoder, it would be beautiful, but less impact, I guess. also, the vocoder vocal makes the natural chorus more natural. It's like a magic.
Human nature is capable of doing such horrendous and nasty things. But it can also create beauty, light, harmony. Like this song, like this performance, it's amazing!
Agreed, MJ must be tearing up from the agony of knowing his beautiful timeless song got raped by this colier kid whose flat and very poor singing voice was not even audible at times in this clip, and trying to hide that fact behind electronics and vocoders only shows he still has a lot to learn and was way out of his league here.
I'd greatly appreciate it if some MJ/Quincy fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal cover of MAN IN THE MIRROR on my channel. Real live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and please excuse the promo.

Well put Gavin, I think it ended up sounding terrific after they caught the original problem.
This has always been my favorite Michael Jackson song. What Jacob has done here is brilliant. I love it just as much as the original.

Great art never dies. Michael would be so proud :) This is beautiful.
It really and truly is and it turns the song into something new which means the song lives on far beyond its creator which is THE reason for any song.
It is indeed
