How to Top Wrap A Les Paul
Вставка

- A quick "how to" video on top wrapping a Les Paul. Plus some tips. If you have not tried it, give it a shot. I personally use this method with great results.
*Disclaimer: Top wrapping your guitar causes wear to the back of the tailpiece and the finish. The strings will start to make notches on the the back of the tailpiece. This comes with the territory of top wrapping.

Was lost but now I'm found!
Thanks bro. 🤘✌️
Awesome! Glad I could show you the way. Don't forget to subscribe! Thanks Bro, Rock on!
Downfalls I see are the break angle of the strings coming out of the tailpiece is at a sharp angle and string tension is lifting the rear of the tailpiece.
As long as nothing breaks, should be good. No?
@@jamesdinger71 Have not had that issue. I use TonePros tailpieces and bridges on my Les Pauls. They lock on to the studs, with 2 set screws! Sounds like you have a sloppy fitting tailpiece with a bit of "play" in it. If the fit is horrible, I would upgrade. If there is just a little bit of "play", you should be fine!
YES!!! Followed your video!! Yes Sir-marked feel and tone-although I just noticed my tailpiece is not fully down on the body-but yes. There is a feel I can't explain. Maybe more Bend-ability? If that's a word. I also used a string spacer called Tune Voodo as I am a horrific bend player on my D and G strings. All in all-Thank you for your video! I just put the girl down after a 4.5 hour session. Lost track of time. For those reading-Ceck your string windings as the Bonnamasa technician stated in that video and make sure tailpiece is down finger tight.
Thank you Sir for your video. Rock on!!
Awesome Michael! No problem, glad to help. Each guitar is different, so find the sweet spot on your guitar. On the Les Paul in the video, all the way down(finger tight) is the sweet spot. Rock on buddy!
I changed over to topwrapping my Epi Les Pauls. I also have a couple Specials with 1pc bridge and it's really the same thing. I bend a lot and use some finger vibrato and I think topwrap on a Gibson-type stopbar tailpiece is easier to play. Feels like less tension. Probably helps tuning stability but I've not had that problem. Of course you have to get the general setup right, such as lowering the tailpiece as you said. Maybe not all the way but to where you get the even, shallower string breakover angle you want at the bridge.
Nice! Yeah, general setup is key. On this guitar, It feels right having the tailpiece all the way down. More stability and better sustain/vibration transfer, but YMMV. I have a locking tailpiece and bridge from TonePros on this guitar, and that helps as well. Thanks. rock on!
I had to top wrap because no matter how I adjusted the bridge and or the tailpiece my strings touched the back of the bridge . No more problems but I can’t say whether my guitar sounds or plays any different .
Cool man. Another reason to top wrap. To clear the back edge of he bridge! Rock on
Thank you Bruno
Your Welcome! 😀Thanks for checking out the video. Don't forget to subscribe! Have a great day, Rock on
Hope you can answer a few questions- 1.) Your saddles-they don't look metal-What are they? 2.) You screwed the tailpiece screws down, then did the top wrap-Did you have to adjust the saddles again and perform an intonation set up again? After all, you did change the "break angle". Thanks in advance.
I'm using a TonePros bridge with their G formula saddles.
"This bridge is loaded with saddles using a special proprietary formula based on the original vintage Nylon 66 saddle material found in guitars of the late 50s and early 60s. This new material retains the tone of the original Nylon 66 saddles, but adds other hi-tech ingredients that provide a new "slippery" surface. This prevents string breakage and provides superior durability, preventing saddle wear and the breakage problems of earlier Graphite materials"
No, It doesn't change the length of the string between the nut and saddle(intonation), But you may want to double check it just to be sure. I have a video about this specific bridge, and another video on intonation, feel free to check them out. Hope that helps. Subscribe to the channel if you haven't, thanks. Cheers!
@@BrunoFreitasMusic Thank you Sir for your response.
@@BrunoFreitasMusic Subscribed-Lock N Load is simply fantastic!!👍👍👍👍 Last question on Top Wrapping--Is the tail piece screwed down first before stringing? After a long wait time (money issues) it looks like I will have a Les Paul going into the New Year. Love the channel, love the music!!
@@michaelpal7641 No problem!
@@michaelpal7641 Thanks bro. 😀Yes, before. I leave it in that position. On my Les Paul I have it bottomed out. Position your tailpiece on the studs and screw the studs all the way down until it bottoms out. Finger tight, don't over-tighten. Your tail piece will fall off right off the studs if you cut all your string off at the same time, so change 1 string at a time. I ended up getting the Tone Pros "locking" tail piece that has 2 set screws that lock the tailpiece to the tailpiece studs. It stays put now! That's awesome man. Congrats. When I got my first Les Paul I was so excited! I still am to this day. Cheers. Happy New Year!
Don't the wrapped strings eat away at the finish on the tail piece?
Yes, It comes with the territory of top wrapping. It will leave notches as well on the back side. Check the video description box! Also watch my "ToneProsTailpiece" video for a look at the wear and tear of my stock tailpiece. ua-cam.com/video/LDkMMwaCv2MI/v-deo.htmlf If you want a pristine tailpiece, don't top wrap. Personally, I don't mind if the tailpiece gets a little beat up. I like the feel/tone better and I'll sacrifice a little wear and tear for that. It also looks cooler imo. To each his own though. Thanks for checking out the video, Rock on Dave!
@@BrunoFreitasMusic sweet thx for your reply!! I think I'll just buy an aftermarket tailpiece to throw on it and give it a try on one of my Gibson guitars
@@zoocru67 Cool man. I think it's worth a shot. I tried it years ago, and now its my preference! Good luck and Rock on!
