    Hmmm. It seems that I wasn't clear in my knife description so I will clarify here: Delphanie had Mike Mossington make the knife to order. She made the sheath herself from deer hide we tanned, buttons we drilled from freshwater mussels, and cordage she hand-wove from milkweed and/or dog bane.

      One Wildcrafter I'm actually from Wisconsin in the USA, but I used to spend extended vacations in the boundary waters, and the lakes, rivers, and portages look almost identical. Did you guys see any northern lights there? I saw them every time I went to the boundary waters. I love you and WB's content. It brings me back home. I live in Japan now, so I can't live the life you guys can unfortunately.

    I'm curious about the lard. With any frying of foods there is excess oil left over. I don't like waste of any kind, and referring especially in the time period you're dabbling in, what was done with the extra lard? Allowed to cool and just reclaimed or used for candles or waterproofing gear possibly? Great video! Wish I was there with yall! Take care!

    • @OneWildcrafter
      @OneWildcrafter  6 років тому +1

      Hi Ty,
      I suspect that people saved their extra lard. Or more likely that they only used as much as they needed to cook what they have. I'm not so sure that deep frying, as we did in this video, would have been a common cooking method while camping.

      Hi Rommel,
      I use Fish ON-line at www.gisapplication.lrc.gov.on.ca/FishONLine/Index.html?site=FishONLine&viewer=FishONLine&locale=en-US
      I find it to be generally quite accurate about what species are in lakes in Ontario.

    • @OneWildcrafter
      @OneWildcrafter  6 років тому +1

      Apparently Zander is an invasive species in Ontario: www.invadingspecies.com/zander/
      We have lots of walleye (or pickerel) which are a related species and are the other species that we cooked in this video (Wooded Beardsman was cleaning them in the background and they are featured in his recent video).

    This was a very good video. I've never seen a fish cleaned like that. What purpose is there to cutting down the spine/dorsal fin area ? Does it have to do with removal of the Y bones ?
    Shore lunch looked fantastic.

    • @badbrad333
      @badbrad333 6 років тому +2

      You're exactly on point. Northern Pike have that pesky Y-bone, meaning your filleting method has to be modified. My least favourite part about fishing for Pike is the waste associated with it because of those bones. That back fillet is one of the nicest cuts you can get from it.

    • @OneWildcrafter
      @OneWildcrafter  6 років тому +1

      If you feel really badly about the waste you can keep the cuts with the y bones and pickle them - the bones dissolve!

    • @badbrad333

      @@OneWildcrafter awesome, I didn't know that! I'll give that a try next time. Thanks! I live in North Bay, so I don't usually fish for pike. But when I hit up Georgian next I'll give it a try.
      There is a cool recipe I learned from an old First Nations woman using pike. Cube the pike, boil it in salt water for 5 mins, then boil in butter for a couple. Top with a dash of salt, and it tastes like poor man's lobster.

    • @OneWildcrafter
