I unintentionally lost 68 pounds in 7 months from rollerblading :) I was 218 during covid and was bored asfff, so I bought some rollerblades and started to ride for fun. I kept eating my way, no diet, eating pizza, burgers and all the junk you can think of, BUT!!!! I skated 2-3 hours everyday cause it was SO fun and it took me out of my boredom. I don't recall MISSING a single day of rollerblading. I still love it and do it everyday!

It’s been about 20 years for myself since my skates were taken away from me for insurance (or lack there of) reasons also 30 btw. I wish it hadn’t happened that way but perhaps it was for a reason. I have a lot of self confidence issues and I feel like getting on the pavement will definitely help me know I can do something that’s good for me and my state of being. Just got my skates today and love how they fit which was surprisingly for me since I’m pretty sure they’re generic lol. Anyway, I look forward to feeling like gliding on the asphalt and maybe our paths will cross at some point. Let’s all make ourselves better emotionally and physically. Skate on brotherman. Positive vibes.✌️

Hi, I’m 65 and have started inline skating after about 41 years. Previously I used to do it on quad skates in my university days (1976-78). Inline skating has been an exhilarating experience and, just 4 months into it, I’m already on the streets practicing it for 1 to 2 hours daily. Your videos are a treat, so thank you for the excellent effort you’re putting into them. Keep on inspiring people like me.
Any tips for forward to backward transition and crossovers, for that’s what I’m working on these days? I’m already well into one-leg skating, parallel turns, can apply heel and T-brakes, and do toe rolls, double push, etc. I have four pairs of skates - both rockered (banana) and non-rockered, kinds - and occasionally use all of them with confidence. Parallel glides and power braking are going to be my next goal soon. If you like, I can send in a few short clips of my skating to seek your suggestions for improvement in my style. Looking forward to your guidance and any further quick tips.
    Love from Pakistan.

@Joseph Clifford From what I gathered it's more of an anatomical problem, would translate to something like "rotulian syndrom" (I'm French so don't know the exact term) : my kneecap doesn't move as/where it should in the joint and it can cause severe inflammation (I found myself limping for days if not weeks).
But hey even if I can't run anymore skating doesn't hurt that much so I'm happy with it if it stays that way !

I got back into it for the same reasons; depression and anxiety. It was a pretty simple question of 'what have I found fun in my life?' and rollerblading was one of very few answers so I got back into it. Not the ultimate cure but it has brought a lot of joy since being back :) Feel like a lot of people came back all around the same time a few years ago, maybe we all woke up and realised the endless career pursuit was actually not fulfilling at all (just a theory, but feel like a lot of people have been pushing for a more meaningful existence in the last decade. Something is obviously wrong enough that so many people seem to be looking back and trying to figure out what made them happy and A LOT of people were rollerblading in the 90's.. Seems a lot of those people are back? maybe, just a feeling I guess)

You are totally right! Lot of people have come back since the whole "American Dream" is more like a prison sentence for your mind and body. I think inline skating is just such a great mix of creativity and fitness that is can transport you into your own world.

And the local roller rink closed. I've ice skated a hand full of times with friends since then but I just got roller blades yesturday and today I went skating twice(very badly lol) and I had so much fun. I used to skate on quads back in the seventies. My 29 year old son took up inline skating a couple of years ago in London. He moved back in with us during lockdown and found me some good second hand rollerblades and took me out skating with him. I'm 58. We have the best time, we live in a very quiet hamlet on a single track road. We put slalom cones down the road and any cars that come along line them up in the middle and go over them. A guy came through the other day in a three wheeler, he took the challenge in good part! I love learning new tricks, I'm improving all the time, it feels fantastic and I especially love the fact that my son isn't embarrassed to skate with his mum! It would be great to find some other skaters, we seem to be a rare breed in West Wales so thanks for spreading the word, hopefully the community will grow and grow!

I love skating because it's like playing as a kid again. I don't really feel like I'm working out until maybe 7 miles in and when you think back to being a kid you didn't realize you were working out all the time when you were running around playing because of the fun you were having. I also love that through the ups and downs and changes in life, it's always there. Just hope I stay healthy so I can continue to for a long time. I see a woman in her 50s or 60s skating the trail I take and it's cool and inspiring to see. Lately my knees have been killing me though, but I think I can change my form a bit to help that

I'm 61 and becoming a carnivore gave me a new lease on life. I started suffering from joint pain and tendonitis when I hit 40. Getting rid of all inflammation causing plants that we can't really digest and just eating animal base gave me my life back. Look into it. Check out the podcast from Joe Rogan talking with a surgeon named Shawn Baker.
      I don't even need my glasses anymore...that I've worn since I was 14.
Eating our proper diet will rejuvenate your entire body.
We don't have a green cell in our body...there's no reason why we should eat leaves. Cows that do eat green stuff have what is called a rumin and they have to eat all day long. The microbes in their rumin break down the plant fiber. We have zero bacteria in our stomach.

Being on a pair of blades definitely blows away that anxiety and depression. Been on and off skating for a while but, have recently been doing it more often (about 2-3 times a week now), it's been helping a lot with my mental health, especially with this pandemic. Though, currently on a small recovery break - was trying to learn how to power slide, and my right leg locked up on a crack and felt like my knee was practically going to snap. Thankfully, was able to get myself out of the lock and prevent a more serious injury. But Im eager to get back on the streets and skate again.

I just started skating about 3 weeks ago, as a way to get my dog running without me having to run, lol. Maybe not the smartest, to be learning how to skate with a dog, but it's working out, and I have skated (with my dog) every day since getting them, and I am loving it!! I definitely wear a helmet and knee, elbow and wrist protection and have just been figuring it out, on safe trails (away from traffic). Just the feeling, like you mentioned in your first point, is so great--I love how it gets me connected with the moment and the mind/body connection. I also totally agree with your point about being proud of gaining skills. Your shots of your skills riding were really fun to watch, and I can only imagine having control like that some day. I don't really have ambitious goals or specific skills I want to learn, but am just enjoy feeling every day like I'm improving and feel a little more secure and comfortable. My dog was the main reason I first got the idea to try it (she's too small to keep up with a bike, but I like how easy it is to have variable speeds on roller blades, for when she wants to stop to sniff, or really get going fast), but I have a feeling I'm going to love developing this into even more of a personal hobby without her. It is just a great feeling...

Two years ago, at age 48, I started skating for that exact same reason. :) I also didn't have any particular goals when I started, just wanted my flatcoated retriever to be able to run and have fun with me. And boy did we have fun! =D
Sadly she got sick and passed away last year, but by then I was hooked on inline skating, so I continued, and even set some goals like learning to skate backwards and braking without using the heel brake. :)
Then, about a year ago, I visited an indoor skate park (it was bad weather, so I went there just to practice on my goals.) took a look at the ramps and thought "nope, not for me" and just skated around practicing my own stuff. After a while I tried some of the easier ramps and found it to be so much fun that I decided to try to drop in on a a small quarter pipe. I fell hard, broke my wrist and had to take a break from skating for a few months. When I got back I decided that "I'm gonna learn that, goddammit". So I did. Now I am skating both for cardio, on the streets, and at the local skate parks, and I am learning something new almost every time. And that feeling when you do a new trick, or manage something that seemed too scary at first, is just awesome. =D The only thing I regret is that I didn't start skating earlier. ;)
So keep on rolling, have fun, and I am sure that you too will evolve beyond your wildest dreams! =D (I mean, if someone would have told me two years ago that I would skate up a 6 foot wall, turn, and skate down again, I would have said that they were crazy.) ^_^
(Sorry for the rant, just got so inspired by your post, Liz.)

I believe that it's an extension of the freedom of movement, your moving, propelling yourself, seeing new things, going faster than walking and running, and then your gliding, just standing there, but still moving, and that's so fun!!! That's my take, and when I taught an 18year old who'd never even heard of it, those were her words... this is so fun and I love this!!! And in going YES!!! And about 45 minutes into it, she was solo and happy as!!!

Came back to skating after a 20+ years stop. Self learned as a kid, and now trying to get back into it with a shiny new pair of 3wd (don't ask me why I got those, they just called to me :D ). Today was my first day trying them out for 1hr at the local park, and I'm half dead, but happy! Cheers from Dublin!

I felt the bite of deppression when all this virus began, went to the store and gotten myself some cheap fitness skates (yeah, we dont have skate shops here so I had to wait for almost 2 months for proper skates), and been happily gliding again since then.... It helped me with my mental health, my physical health, gotten me to meet a lot of new people....and generaly start enjoying life again instead of trapping my self in a routine betwen eating, sleeping and working..... and thats the part I love the most about it, when I was 15, i thought that skating is nothing more besides doing tricks and stuff.....so I used skates only for that, basicly...
Im 27 now, and I find skating liberating among other things.... The freedom of movement, the peace it provides, the ability to get lost in the city you thought you knew..... Its just, amazing..... :D
Anyway, im prob too late to comment on the video that randomly popped out.... But Its a great video, and great reasons to start inline.... :D

I know this is an old video but at 43 I just got the itch to get out there and skate again and have been going down the UA-cam rabbit hole of rollerblade videos that I didn't know existed until just recently. I thought the sport was pretty much dead. Thank you for the video as you gave me more resolve to start skating again as I hadn't thought of the mental health aspect. Lately I feel myself starting to spiral into a dark place of self pity and doubt so I hope it can help, along with other things. Now just got to figure what skates I want to try and convince the wife to let me buy them.

I ran for 30 years and absolutely loved it (7 years competitive, and the rest for meditation and fitness) until 2018, when at the age of 42, I had the first of 4 knee surgeries and was told I was never running again. Now, I'm 45, rebuilding my strength in the weight room and am looking for that "thing" to give me what running gave me. So, 3 days ago, I bought my first pair of inline skates (Bauer roller hockey for beginners). I figured that since I had learned years ago how to ice skate on hockey skates, I could learn this. I went out for my first skate yesterday, just to get a feel for the wheels, and I discovered I am truly a beginner, but boy was it a BLAST. I fell down once, and I rolled around super slow for about 15 minutes, and I am hooked. I came back to UA-cam for some tutorials on skills I will need, and I found your series. I love the positivity and the super accessible approach to skating that you give. Thanks for being amazing! I'm looking forward to once again logging some serious miles and getting a new lease on life!

Dude you're spot-on about 'that flow'. Even during a bad skate session I always have moments where I get into the flow. Those moments make it totally worthwhile. The community makes it worthwhile, too. 99% of us are super supportive when people have questions. It's cool to see, especially when most other communities will tell a beginner to just google stuff like that solves all the problems.
Random question: How long did it take you to get good at skating fakie? I've gotten better but it's one of those skills that still kicks my ass consistently.

Since I've discovered inline skating, I've hardly used my bike to get around in the city. Until a year ago, going to the shop was something I had to do. Nowadays, it's a great excuse to go for a skating trip. And I'm extremely lucky, because a couple of months ago the third biggest skatepark of Europe opened its doors in my neighbourhood.

It died out 'big-time' in Canada too. I was hugely into skating in the mid 90's. It was all the rage.
I'd get together with a few buddies back then and do a late night downtown skate. So much fun.
Everyone was skating back then. We had some great skate shops in downtown Toronto and Montreal. I used to drive tour buses back then and took my skates with me everywhere. I'd skate in Central park in NYC, the boardwalk in Atlantic City, Washington DC...so many cool places to skate.
I don't know what happened in the late 90's or early 2000's but skating just vanished.
I got out of it too. Life got busy...
Anyhow...fast forward to the last couple of years I got interested again when my legs day just became too boring in the gym and decided to skate instead of doing a leg press.
I discovered there was a huge amount of skate blogging on UA-cam and that really got the ball rolling. My old Bauer hockey skates from the 90's were disintegrating and decided to get some modern skates. Now I have about 7 new pairs. Love them all.
I was never into aggressive skating...other than street skating and jumping the odd stair set. But with all the aggressive skating videos out now, I decided to give it a go. Wow! Do I love it!
Got some Aeon 80 and 60 skates and now at 61 years of age learning how to grind and slide.
Talk about fun. Sliding on skates is just like running and sliding on a patch of ice as a kid.
    Take care and keep rolling

Awesome clip! Awesome points! I fell in love with ice-skating one year ago when I started to try to seriously learn it because of beeing a stepfather of two young and wonderful hockey-guys. When spring came - so did corona and social distancing.. I found inlineskating on UA-cam partly because of your great channel. I realised inline-skating is just like ice-skating but you can do it everywhere. Your entire city is your rink and you can do it when its warm and sunny.. Sometimes it feels like flying, sometimes I'm just wandering on wheels - enjoying the soft flow and the smooth dance-like feeling. I've been salsa-dancing for more than ten years. It's like that time you can have for yourself and think about nothing else. And I believe that for the human mind, especially if you have one that works like mine, is such a relief. I’ve taken a 20 year hiatus in skating but I just bought a new pair of M12’s because the boot was familiar but everything else has changed so much compared to the last skates I bought some Rollerblade Troopers, 40 something me doesn’t like anti rocker anymore but only a few skates in and can’t explain how much it’s improved my mood and is giving me exercise to look forward to since knee surgery last year

Bro thanks for this video, I'm 46 and have decided it's time I got my mind and body fit again with inline skates after 20 years👍🏾

I used to skate all the time as a kid. I ran a lot in my 20s, but now I'm just too old and fat to enjoy that sport too much. I'm 31 years old and just picked skating back up, and could not be happier. It's fun, it's low impact, and gets me off the fucking couch.

I'm 55 and just ordered my first pair of inline skates. I pray they will fit b/c they are coming from DK I think (skated on quads ages ago and ice more recently). All the quality skates, it seems, are in Europe, and practically impossible to find good skates locally. I also just started skiing this year - and for all of the reasons you you mentioned, *plus*, just getting outside and breathing fresh air and new scenery is good for the soul!

Great video. It's odd how the 2 physical things I found most enjoyable in my past (hacky-sack and blading) both became socially un-cool or whatever. As for blading, I really got into it at first about 10 years ago (I'm 44 now). Back then, I'd blade around my company's office at lunch every day, whether 100 degrees or 30. Aside from the occasional dive to avoid a semi-truck pulling into the warehouse, it was a blast. For whatever reason, I fell out of it (getting way into making music, family, and work maybe). I've been wanting to get back into regular exercise, and I just don't have enough fun jogging (also tough on the knees) or doing boring routines at the gym. Today I decided to pull out the skates and give it another go. Man, I really have missed it. In order to ensure I don't set it aside anytime soon, I ordered a new pair of blades (more urban with the smaller wheels than my current pair) and plan on making it a daily lunch thing again. I'd like to learn more advanced stuff, like skating backwards and better stopping. My ultimate goal is to make my own songs to blade to (like the one you have in the video with the vocal samples). That would be super satisfying and I will get there. Hopefully I can find others in this community you spoke of. On the plus side there, my pastor is a former hockey player whose body can't jog anymore, so I think I may have a built-in blading buddy when I want. Cheers and keep it up!

That's great news that you are picking your blades up again! It really does help to blade with a buddy as well as treat yourself to new gear. Welcome back!

I went rollerblading at a church camp I went to this year and immediately fell in love with it! It was my first time skating so I was a bit nervous and started out rocky but in the first 10 minutes I was able to ride pretty well. I fell alot too but I just laughed at myself a bit then got back up and went right back to it. It was some of the best fun I'd ever had!

14:12 wait what?! it‘s really happening? Besides the fact that today is the day I felt like discovering recently uploaded inline skate videos I thought something like starting a movement could be great to bring all that great memories and especially the feeling back to a new generation of „I’m so super busy cause all that matters is me“ kids and let them roll together in 2021. Damn that makes me happy! Maybe 2021 is the best time to restart everything. Sad that Remz never changed it‘s prices so I need to wait a lil longer but then... LET‘S GO! 😃

Yo great video.! Im a returning skater after 25+ yrs off the wheels and bought my first pair had no end of problems with them the frames keep moving under pressure so the company are investigating! Im an adrenaline junky and to feel the freedom of being on your own and fitness. Im a running and mtb so hoping the skating will improve my fitness more. Im 43 now and seems a little more scarier haha but I’ll get over that im sure. Thanks for your top 5 for inline skating 👊🏻

Great content. Love the inline skating. I skate for fitness on K2 Boas with 90 100 wheels. Live a couple of blocks from 2.7 mile paved path and will periodically knock out 15 miles. Great opportunity to listen to music compared with biking on road.
Can’t figure out why skating is dormant. I also bike and biking has grown exponentially and we can’t buy performance bikes in 2021.

Hey man thanks for the inspiration. I’m turning 29 in a few days and never have put on a pair of skates. I have been skateboarding for years and I think I want to give it a shot.

I've recently become very aware of how inactive I've become, spending all my time behind a screen. When I was younger I used to be so active. I'm about to start inline skating (at 28) to try to change that.
It will be first time in skates (of any kind) so will be interesting. I have practically no core strength or leg muscle, and a dodgy knee, so lots to learn and improve. My biggest struggle eill be dealing with my social anxiety. Just getting out in public to skate will really help my confidence.
Your videos are helpful and inspiring.

We are get to that point and have to make the conscious decision to get out and be more active. Glad to hear you're back! We all struggle to some degree with social anxiety skating but it goes away with time. Put on some music and escape to your own world! Enjoy!
