Making a Simple Tailstock Threading Die holder

- Hey everyone!
This week we have ourselves another cool little toolmaking project, a tailstock die holder! I'll even tackle turning my first morse taper.
We will go through turning, some milling and a few little mistakes along the way!

A tip for cutting threads single pointed or die cut. Look in your reference for thread dimensions and notice that for an external thread the major diameter of the thread is SMALLER than the nominal diameter of the thread. It is only a little bit smaller than the nominal diameter, but it makes cutting the threads noticeably easier with a die especially if you go to the low side of the tolerance. If single pointing the threads will have the correct appearance with a thread flat crest equal to 1/8 the pitch when finished.
That fit is something I'm learning slowly, I'm pretty picky about getting the best fit I can, and I'm guilty of making life hard by leaving the OD for a die a little too big. But thanks for the tip!
Not to be that guy, it could just be the camera angle when you’re milling but are you letting your edge finder kick out before you zero your DRO?
Go for it, be that guy! I usually bring it in until it runs true, and then just bump it until it moves ever so slightly to the other side and hit zero. Should I be letting it run out further on the other side?

And yeah that would be cool, I’m planning a “lathe upgrades “ kind of deal and that would fit in there nicely, it might be a couple of videos away, but sounds like a fun thing to work through.

That’s a good buy! And I completely agree about the gearbox, it’s the only thing I wish I had, but I guess you can’t have it all 😂
Just an fyi, if you take the die off of the work under power, don't forget to reverse the lathe, or your hand and wrist are going to have a bad time.
I'd just take the extra 30 seconds and do it by hand personally.
Otherwise this is a nice looking tool, good job!
Oh I won’t be making a habit of it, I have literally done it that one time on the video and it pushes back pretty hard, I’ll make a fixed one for under power die cutting at some stage. But thanks for checking it out! Appreciate the feedback
Also might be worth stripping your top slide, look for burrs and then carefully tighten the gib strip and lube well with some way oil. It seemed to be a little harder to keep smooth than it could be even doing it manually.
Yeah that’s something I have actually done since filming the video, before cutting the taper I could feel a little movement in the cross slide and over tightened the gibs to compensate, I pulled it down the other day and it did need a little love. But took me ages to figure it out at the time 😂 appreciate the feedback though 🙏
My next project for the mini lathe. Already have made one for the Harrison lathe, it makes life easier

I use the empty tailstock to keep the die perpendicular to the workpiece.
We also need taps with a guide spigot to keep it centred and aligned before the threads start to cut.
For sure! I’ve been using the tail stock or a drill chuck in the tail stock up until now, it’s just nice to have a tool for the job 👍 thanks for checking out the video 🙏
