Tip here!: whole complete rat feed is sometimes difficult to find and very expensive if you do (in my country for example) I mix their own food: its rabbit dry feed mixed with cat dry feed. Of course give them fresh veggies consistently.(I separate it from dry food because otherwise it's likely to grow mold. While my rats eat I give them (by hand) fresh veggies in between so they dont get picky. It can also help with getting them used to you if they're a bit shy or skittish:) ) Hope this helps! :)

I have pet rats THERE MIGHT BE STUFF IN HERE YOU DONT SO PLEASE IF YOU WANT 1: rats are very prone to sicknesses with there lungs, such as they can get clogged.make sure you take them to the vet as soon as you find any symptoms like if when they breath is sounds really weird. Rats are very prone to sudden death aswell that carnt really be explained. If one of your rats die, make sure you get another as soon as possible, rats in there own can get very depressed. 2: rats actually laugh! When your playing with your rats, there is a good chance they could be laughing, this laughing is however to high a frequency for the human ear to hear. 3: if by any chance one of your rats have babies some day, be sure not to hold the babies until there at least 6-7 dad old, the chemicals on people's hands is enough I kill the babies. Also make sure you don't interfere with the mum and her babies at all, unless you absolutely have to 4: when you get a bigger rat cage as they grow, don't put minimal things in the cage, rats love to be in confined spaces and not feel exposed. Even putting a balnket over the top of the cage at night would help, also make sure you provide the rats with things to sleep in at different heights and made from different materials, so in summer they can choose to sleep in something plastic like a Sputnik to keep them cool. 5:make sure you give your rats a balanced diet, I like to give my rats a small bowl of grains and nuts, fruit and veg, and there special rat pellets aswell as an occasional treat.also 100% do NOT trust the rodent water bottles, even if you get a good quality one, always have a water bowl sitting under it. The water bottles can leak and run out of water, or just fall of the cage, if the rats are left with no water for over night or longer, there is a very good chance they will have died by the morning from dehydration 6: do not think it's a sickness when you see your rat with red crusty stuff around there eyes when they wake up, this is just mucus, and nothing to worry about, it's exactly the same as how humans have sleep around our eyes when we wake up. Also if at any time you rat does weird julting and sometimes squeaking aswell, so not worry they just have the hiccups, they get the hiccups most commonly when there tired or have just woken from a nap Also rats are not able to vomit, they do not have a gag reflex like what we do. So all rats can do it cough and Chowk, sometimes they can cough up what ever was stuck, other times it can take up to a month of chowking before they can dialogue what was stuck. Do not interfear at all unlease around there eyes start to go blue and they stop breathing, if this happens you have to tip them up side down. And press up and down just bellow there neck. But this is only if it gets very severe. My ratshave both chocked a few times and never have I had to do this. Most commonly they can just just cough it up after a few minutes. 7: give them plenty of attention. Since yours are new, until they are completely comfortable with you, it is always good to everytime you walk past the cage give them a small treat each. This teaches them that good things happen when your around. If you need to catch your rats dont take your time just time to get them first time you try, this stops them from getting as stressed out that your chassing them. 8: it's very good to learnt rat body language. Some are 1: when there ears are back there relaxed 2: they with boggle and Brux when there happy 3: they with wag there tale is there happy 4: if there cold they with puff up there fur and usually tuck there hear between there feet to sleep 5: they also puff up there fur if there scared 6: they with walk sideways a bit like a crab it there feeling cornered of intimidated. 7: they will clean jstt the tip of there nose if there feeling stressed or frightened 8: they will popcorn (hop as they run) if there very exited 9: they will we or poo if there scared 10: they tend to hang upside down from the roof of the cage if there nervous or scared, mine did this on the first night I had them. Hope this was helpful 😃 Good luck with your rats!!!
"I don't want to stress them out so I'm gonna leave them in the carrier." Most animal owners don't know this but when they first get picked up, they are very stressed by the area change. Very responsible rat owner💗

The one thing I would do is get them a bigger cage, Single or Double Critter Nation are awesome cages. Yes, they are expensive but they can be used for other animals if you decide to get something other than rats later on down the road. The wheel you got is WAY too small and can hurt their backs. That is a GORGEOUS Black Eyed White!!!! That is my dream rat. I have a friend who is an ethical breeder and will be getting a trio at the very least in a few months. You can get stuff way cheaper on Amazon or Chewy and that way you aren't supporting a store that sources their small animals from rodent mills.
Thank you for the comment! I am planning on upgrading to a critter nation very soon & have taken the wheel out! I filmed a recent video showing everything I have fun my cage currently if you're interested- no pressure of course. And thank you, I hate supporting chain pet stores so I'll definitely look online more.
Congrats on becoming a rat mom you have two dumbo ears so cute! I have 9 girls. I think you mentioned you got them from a breeder? I would look up the hides your have cause I believe hay is not good for rats. Alittle tip for bonding wear a hoodie and let the girls be in your pocket for 1 they will for secure being in a dark cozy place 2 it’s a good way for them to recognize your scent you as well you can pet them so they learn you are not gonna harm them and if possible always use the same hoodie since it will have their scent on it 🐁
Thanks for the helpful comment! I actually started bonding with them in a hoodie- I filmed a whole video with them inside the hood because they were asleep and I didn't want to take them out lol
I just posted a video introducing the rats & how I've been caring for them. I'd love your input and any constructive criticism :) no pressure, of course

So happy you're having a good experience! As am I :) Have your rats used the wheel saucer thing? Mine haven't touched it so I just took it out because it takes up so much room
Hello! I just posted a video introducing the rats & how I've been caring for them, I'd love any input or constructive criticism you could give :) no pressure, of course!
I'm so glad you did your research! Other then the cage size which you said you would upgrade your doing great. I would like to give some advice about there food tho. The brand your feeding them is not every good for them some small animal food brands have actually been proven to kill them. I would use OXBOW young rat food. Oxbow is the only brand I trust for my babies. But it is also SUPER important you don't feed them just pellets they need a mix of grains. It's pretty easy to make yourself I personally use Wheat square cereal Toasted or puffed rice cereal Off brand Cheerios cereal (off brand has less sugar added) Oats Tricolor rotini pasta Some type of raw nut like almonds (not peanuts there to fattening) And some type of dried fruit I prefer bananas They also need fresh fruits and veggies every to every other time you feed them. Strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, peas and green beans are great! And remember mango and all citrus fruits can kill them so say clear of those. There diet is VERY sensitive so always check everything before giving it to them I would also give them treats, in some type for foraging toy is best I would suggest the baby puffed cereal or baby yoggies. They also love baby food as a treat
Thank you so much for your comment! I have switched their food and give them treats in foraging boxes and scattered around the bedding :) as a first time rat parent I really appreciate getting your knowledge!
That corner litterbox is such a pain. If your rats use them with no issue, then great, if not changing to a rectangle one will likely solve issues. The leash is pointless. They can get out of that kind. I cant tel but it looks like paper bedding. Paper is one of the worst for odor and ammonia control. You’d need to change it daily. Using kiln dried pine will be better and safer. And way cheaper too! They are so cute! And kudos to you going with breeder rats! I love how your kiddos exclaims that they are so soft and cute. ♥️ For more i fo thats GOOD. Septembers life i think is the name of the channel. Also misc mischief(which is my channel full disclosure) is about ethical rat care and all my info is backed up with science. Theres also lots of fun diys and cheap cage decor ideas! Cause we gotta spoil our babies right? ;)
With buying bird perches for rats you might want to check out what kind of wood they're made from as rats have a surprising amount of woods that can be toxic to them if ingested, learned that the hard way
Once you upgrade, a good affordable cage id recommend a rat manor cage which is really good for two females you’d just need to get some cage liners, or if u have some extra money u can get them a critter nation cage which is also really good for ratties if u ever consider getting more, I also commend u for researching before u got them
Thank you for the comment! I tried to do as much research as I could. I only have really heard of the critter nation cages, so thank you for the recommendations.
No hate but a couple tips , 1 ur rats are so cute , 2 you should consider getting a critter nation single story cage they are a fair price and super nice and the perfect size for 2 adult ratties, 3 the cage should be a bit more cluttered bc they like to climb and forage, you should also feed fresh veggies at least once a week and consider a shunomite diet, and 2+ litter trays and to help littler train them try pee rocks base tally flat rocks that you put in the litter box to help pee train them! Again no hate I love your vids!
is hard to find a good breeder for rats i really wanted one i want a boy and a girl so i can breed it of my own too but i aint risking it of getting in petco or petsmart cuz ik it carry rat fever sadly but im getting a mice in petco and i might buy gloves as well to hold them
I have 12 rats of my own (8 boys and 4 girls) originally I had just a pair of girls like yourself but from my experience with owning a pair it’s possible they may start to fight or get sick of each other as a two which is what happened to mine so I adopted another pair of girls which were also going through the same thing. Since being a four they never fight or have the same issues they did before. I’m not saying get 12 rats like me 😅 but perhaps looking into getting a third or fourth in the future would improve their happiness so much. They much prefer group living to pairs and my 12 absolutely thrive as a big group compared to when I had small separated groups. Obviously it’s completely your choice as an owner and your rats might not have any issues with just being a pair at all so it’s up to you 🥰 keep up the great work and lovely videos ♥️🐀🐁
I’ve had rats on and off for years, you can make easy DIY cages out of old furniture like dressers or book cases. It’s some work but it’s worth it in the end because you get to completely customize it and they’re usually a better size than the pet store “cages”. But if you don’t want to DIY one, a double critter nation cage is the best on the market.
I'm planning on getting a double critter nation cage online but if I'm feeling creative I'll try to think of ways to diy, that seems like it would be lots of fun!
i noticed you were driving on burnhamthorpe, could i ask what breeder you went to? i live in that area. idk if i should go to a petsmart or anything like that. thanks for the videos they're super helpful!
Ahh that's so cute. I just posted a video introducing the rats (& their names) if you're interested - no pressure, of course :) ua-cam.com/video/vGaby2x87Fc/v-deo.html
hey i jus wanted to remind you that they need cage cleaning veryyy often . About like 2-3x a week, this is to prevent uri (upper respiratory infection) :) . Since you’re using bedding you might have to change it out every 3 days.
It's recommended to clean often times per week because rats drip pee, and the ammonia from their pee can reach their respiratory systems which are sensitive. I've had a rat get a URI because I didn't clean the cage as often. I don't have experience with carpet, you might have to ask someone who uses carpet.
I love this! 🥰🖤 Rats are the most superior animal :) My first boys where Elvis & Elton. Now I have boy baby russian blue dumbo's called Freddie & Deacon! ♡ (When they are tame & older I'm going to upgrade there cage and hopefully introduce two other rats to them called Roger & Brian)

Also make sure you don't interfere with the mum and her babies at all, unless you absolutely have to
4: when you get a bigger rat cage as they grow, don't put minimal things in the cage, rats love to be in confined spaces and not feel exposed.
The water bottles can leak and run out of water, or just fall of the cage, if the rats are left with no water for over night or longer, there is a very good chance they will have died by the morning from dehydration
6: do not think it's a sickness when you see your rat with red crusty stuff around there eyes when they wake up, this is just mucus, and nothing to worry about, it's exactly the same as how humans have sleep around our eyes when we wake up. Also if at any time you rat does weird julting and sometimes squeaking aswell, so not worry they just have the hiccups, they get the hiccups most commonly when there tired or have just woken from a nap
Also rats are not able to vomit, they do not have a gag reflex like what we do.
Some are
1: when there ears are back there relaxed
2: they with boggle and Brux when there happy
3: they with wag there tale is there happy
4: if there cold they with puff up there fur and usually tuck there hear between there feet to sleep
5: they also puff up there fur if there scared
6: they with walk sideways a bit like a crab it there feeling cornered of intimidated.
7: they will clean jstt the tip of there nose if there feeling stressed or frightened
8: they will popcorn (hop as they run) if there very exited
9: they will we or poo if there scared
10: they tend to hang upside down from the roof of the cage if there nervous or scared, mine did this on the first night I had them.
Hope this was helpful 😃
Good luck with your rats!!!
omg the cage set up came out so cool!!
Thank you! I want it to be really fun for them
awww great videoo hun , love your energy can't wait for more content 💞
Thank you so much!!
Hey girl, I just posted another rat video if you're interested in watching more rat content :)
both mice are super adorable! the way they were climbing the cage bar was so cute! I enjoyed the video ❤️
yay I'm you enjoyed!
Your pet rats are cute. I love their color and their cage as well. Big thumbs up my friend.
Thank you so much!
I remember my first rat ever..Charlie Templeton...baby rat and he was a wee smaller then that but oh so sweet..that was 30 plus years ago.
I love this cage setup it looks fun :)
Yay, thank you!
"I don't want to stress them out so I'm gonna leave them in the carrier." Most animal owners don't know this but when they first get picked up, they are very stressed by the area change. Very responsible rat owner💗
So cute! sweet! thanks for sharing! 👌🏼 happy holidays!
Thank you! Happy Holidays :)
Gorgeous ratties, hope they are settling in well. Isamu do amazing rat care videos, I binge watched her videos before getting my boys 🥰
They are settling in super well, thank you! So ex sting that you have some boys of your own!
Hello :) I just posted another rat video introducing the rats & basic care tips if you're interested in more rat content!
I'm so proud of you, you did your research and even set up a cage
Awww this is so wholesome to watch! I had a pet rat years ago I think I’m going to buy one again they are great pets!
Omg I’ve always been scared of rats but ur making them seem cute!
yay I'm happy I'm shining a new light on rats! they are so cute!
you shouldn’t be! they are totally not like street rats! fancy rats are the cutest
Yes! They are amazing as pets. The prejudices against rats are really bad, so people like this who know what they’re doing really help.
It is very nice to see someone respecting rats.
Yay!!! Congrats on your new fur babies!!! What a lovely home you have for them. So much love. They are going be so happy with you!!! Cheers from Dallas, TX
Thank you so much!! Sending love from Canada :)
wow I love your cage! and your rats are so cute
For the nibble balls,I put treats in them and my animal loves it!
So cute! My family is getting 2 females in a few weeks. They are only 2 weeks and 2 days right now. We're so excited!! Good luck with your babies😁🐀
That is so exciting!! Thank you :) all the best with yours!
I hope your 2 females are doing well! I just posted another rat video if you're interested in watching some more rat content :) ua-cam.com/video/vGaby2x87Fc/v-deo.html
The cage set up looks good and the ratties are so adorable!😍
I'm glad you think so, thank you :)
I would recommend looking online for a big care as there are more options
I am, thank you! There is definitely way more selection online then in pet stores
I've had rats for years. They're really cool animals. I used to take mine riding with me to visit pet stores. 🐀🐁🐾
That is so cute!
yes i love how you actually did research!!
Thank you for all your tips!
I just posted a video introducing the rats & how I've been caring for them. I'd love your input and any constructive criticism :) no pressure, of course
You did everything so well!! One thing I recommend as I rat owner is getting an all metal cage, rats tend to chew through plastic but other than that it looks amazing!
Okay, thank you so much! I just posted another rat video meeting the rats & how I've been caring for them. I'd love any input you could give- no pressure, of course ua-cam.com/video/vGaby2x87Fc/v-deo.html
Interesting baby rabbits my friend..
Thanks for setting a great example for rat owners :)
She is literally the cutest ever😍😍😍😍😍
I know!! Thanks for the comment :)
Awww they’re so cute!! 😍
Thank you!!
I too might get pet rats and I watched ALOT of Emiology. Another extremely underrated rat channel that I really really recommend is Shadow the Rat. I got almost all of my products from their recommendations.
I got the same starter kit for my rats! They loved it! I absolutely LOVE rats!
So happy you're having a good experience! As am I :) Have your rats used the wheel saucer thing? Mine haven't touched it so I just took it out because it takes up so much room
@@alexandrastott I took it out too. They were very afraid of it!
I would suggest taking out the shelfs to create a more active layout.
That's the plan! I just wanted to wait and get a another rope and more things to fill the space :)
For a starter cage this is good, well done
Thank you! I've definitely upgraded a lot since this first cage.
This is Exactly how I will act when I get my pet rats, super good job!
Thank you!
Amazing! I have no words! You are an amazing rat owner
Love your cage and all the research you did! You should be a good rat momma!
Thank you so much!!
Hello! I just posted a video introducing the rats & how I've been caring for them, I'd love any input or constructive criticism you could give :) no pressure, of course!
i recently got a cage and i highly recommend getting them second hand instead of paying much more money for new, smaller cages.
Hey very good video, we enjoyed it
Thanks for watching!!
@@alexandrastott no worries
I'm so glad you did your research! Other then the cage size which you said you would upgrade your doing great. I would like to give some advice about there food tho. The brand your feeding them is not every good for them some small animal food brands have actually been proven to kill them. I would use OXBOW young rat food. Oxbow is the only brand I trust for my babies. But it is also SUPER important you don't feed them just pellets they need a mix of grains. It's pretty easy to make yourself I personally use
Wheat square cereal
Toasted or puffed rice cereal
Off brand Cheerios cereal (off brand has less sugar added)
Oats
Tricolor rotini pasta
Some type of raw nut like almonds (not peanuts there to fattening)
And some type of dried fruit I prefer bananas
They also need fresh fruits and veggies every to every other time you feed them.
Strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, peas and green beans are great!
And remember mango and all citrus fruits can kill them so say clear of those.
There diet is VERY sensitive so always check everything before giving it to them
I would also give them treats, in some type for foraging toy is best I would suggest the baby puffed cereal or baby yoggies. They also love baby food as a treat
Thank you so much for your comment! I have switched their food and give them treats in foraging boxes and scattered around the bedding :) as a first time rat parent I really appreciate getting your knowledge!
ua-cam.com/video/vGaby2x87Fc/v-deo.html
That corner litterbox is such a pain. If your rats use them with no issue, then great, if not changing to a rectangle one will likely solve issues.
The leash is pointless. They can get out of that kind.
I cant tel but it looks like paper bedding. Paper is one of the worst for odor and ammonia control. You’d need to change it daily. Using kiln dried pine will be better and safer. And way cheaper too!
They are so cute! And kudos to you going with breeder rats! I love how your kiddos exclaims that they are so soft and cute. ♥️
For more i fo thats GOOD. Septembers life i think is the name of the channel.
Also misc mischief(which is my channel full disclosure) is about ethical rat care and all my info is backed up with science.
Theres also lots of fun diys and cheap cage decor ideas! Cause we gotta spoil our babies right? ;)
Dont let The cat come in to The place that The rats are in!!❤
Aw so cute! You're gonna be such a great rat owner!
Thank you so much :)
With buying bird perches for rats you might want to check out what kind of wood they're made from as rats have a surprising amount of woods that can be toxic to them if ingested, learned that the hard way
Okay, thank you! I will definitely do some research.
i love rats so much! is there any channel/website in particular that you looked at for your research?
Sooooo cute!!🥺😍 thank you so so much for doing everything correctly 🥰
Wow thank you!
Omg they are so cute🥺🥺I can’t handle the cuteness 😭😭
rats are underated and missunderstood pets, i hope you have the best time with them
Thank you for making a great example!
That is so sweet, I'm so glad!
Rats are the best pets ever!!!!!!
They are! I just posted another rat video, they are amazing!
Again no hate I love your vids!
is hard to find a good breeder for rats i really wanted one i want a boy and a girl so i can breed it of my own too but i aint risking it of getting in petco or petsmart cuz ik it carry rat fever sadly but im getting a mice in petco and i might buy gloves as well to hold them
im not getting a rat, but im getting a hamster tomorrow! rodents are underrated pets and deserve more attention!
btw ur rats are so cute!
I've watched tons of emiology and shadow the rat vids. Now the only hard part is getting the rat...
Final people who do research!! Your rats are very lucky to have you
That is so kind, thank you💗
sis im living vicariously through you!!!
Ahhh fun! I just posted another rat video if you want more rat content :) ua-cam.com/video/vGaby2x87Fc/v-deo.html
They are adorable, and I’m glad you are spoiling them!
I actually just got two baby boys yesterday! I named them Dumbo and Ferris. I’m also glad you didn’t buy from a chain pet store. You’re doing great!!
I'm planning on getting a double critter nation cage online but if I'm feeling creative I'll try to think of ways to diy, that seems like it would be lots of fun!
That is so exciting! such cute names! Thanks for your comments :)
You seem like an amazing to be owner!
also the best rood is mazuri rat and mouse blocks
Got my 4 males xxxxxx excited ❤❤❤
love how she completely ignores her sister, dog, and cats 😃
wait they’re so cute omg!
I know right, I'm obsessed!
i have a 2 or 3 month old female dumbo rat and she's so amazing!! I'm about to get a few more and I'm so happy! your going to love them
That is great!! I absolutely love my girls, they are so sweet and smart! Enjoy :)
I hope all your rats are doing well! I just posted an update video on my rats if you're interested in watching more rat content :)
How much did you spend on their cage setup?
i noticed you were driving on burnhamthorpe, could i ask what breeder you went to? i live in that area. idk if i should go to a petsmart or anything like that. thanks for the videos they're super helpful!
omg looking at them teh names rattatui and stui poped in my head lmao
Ahh that's so cute. I just posted a video introducing the rats (& their names) if you're interested - no pressure, of course :) ua-cam.com/video/vGaby2x87Fc/v-deo.html
hey i jus wanted to remind you that they need cage cleaning veryyy often . About like 2-3x a week, this is to prevent uri (upper respiratory infection) :) . Since you’re using bedding you might have to change it out every 3 days.
I know they're super prone to getting an uri, thank you for the reminder! I've been keeping up with cleaning super often :)
what if u use carpet, and do u have to change it often since theyre babies or u always hsve to clean that much?
It's recommended to clean often times per week because rats drip pee, and the ammonia from their pee can reach their respiratory systems which are sensitive. I've had a rat get a URI because I didn't clean the cage as often. I don't have experience with carpet, you might have to ask someone who uses carpet.
We have the same cage for our rats when they are babies
I love this! 🥰🖤 Rats are the most superior animal :) My first boys where Elvis & Elton. Now I have boy baby russian blue dumbo's called Freddie & Deacon! ♡ (When they are tame & older I'm going to upgrade there cage and hopefully introduce two other rats to them called Roger & Brian)
They are such great pets, that is such an exciting plan! Just curious, is there any specific reason you choose to get males over females?
I hope all your boys are doing well! I just posted a rat update video if you want to watch more rat content :) ua-cam.com/video/vGaby2x87Fc/v-deo.html
A cheap way to get them a really big cage is to buy a cage cage and just zip tie some chicken wire if the spacing is to big!!
Thank you, I've found cages are quite expensive
