Return of the giant hogweed, One of my favourite Genesis songs about a gentle romp in the English countryside with well heeled and well travelled gentlemen and their imported flesh eating plants that can walk and inject poison❤❤❤❤❤ this and 'watcher of the skies' as good as any Prog. Both even better live......
I am so glad we don't have giant hogweed in my state. I think in new York they have it. Someone found it by swamp, I heard. And they brought it home... and they struck by night... 🤣
@L33Reacts There is a giant hogweed plant in the UK. It is seen as an invasive pest. Although nothing like this in the song, which is more 'day of the Triffid'. Ours has poisonous leaves, and the sap which can burn and even leave scars, a bit like your poison ivy.
I've seen Giant Hogweed once in the wild. It really is a giant, an enormous umbeliferate (like huge cow parsley or hemlock, over 6ft tall) with a massive stem covered in red hairs. You don't want to go near it! The hairs are poisonous and stinging, the poison reacts with sunlight to cause painful skin blisters. But worse than that, it can cause blindness if a hair gets in your eyes! I only knew about it from this song, so thanks Genesis, not just for a great piece of music but a useful public health warning 😊.
You can hear Peter saying "Heracleum mantegazzianum" in the song, which is the Latin scientific name for the Giant Hogweed.. The plant is native to Russia, but was brought to England in 1817 as an ornamental and became naturaliized an spread in the wild.. It also spread throughout Europe and North America.
Basically a true story! You can still see these at Kew Gardens in London, and they are classified as an invasive species here in the UK. Only Genesis, and specifically Peter, could make such an epic track out of this! Kudos!
Hi Lee, what a lovely reaction. Steve's guitar makes me weep also. He and David Gilmour are the most emotive guitarists in prog. When I was your age and feeling overwhelmed, music was the salve and I turned to it often. Progressive music always elevates my mood, but Genesis takes bliss to another level. It's good to see you "shedding ever-changing colours" (your emotions) as you let music guide you through difficult times. Chin up, buddy. You're doing right and things will work out for you and your girls. Cheers!
For Absent Friends penned by the newcomers Steve and Phil and exquisitely sung by Phil. What mood and atmosphere this song exudes. It is so Nursery Cryme-ish! This album came out in 1971, a splendid year for "art or avant-garde rock." PLEASE check out 1971 Pawn Hearts by Van Der Graaf Generator specifically "Man Erg." You will not be disappointed!
Child stress over… sat in supermarket car park in the freezing rain with this. My me time 😂😂 I had to take a break seeing tears in your eyes. You know, you’re right about the ‘Steve being good at guitars’ thing. Steve Hackett Steve Howe of Yes Steve Rothery from Marillion Steven Wilson Steve Clark from Def Leppard wrote a lot of their iconic riffs.. And definitely can’t forget Steve Vai or Steve Morse.
In fairness to Steve Hackett he still tours with his brilliant band and does all the Genesis classics, this of course among them. He also did a brilliant live version of this with the unbelievable Transatlantic in London, that band of course containing Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas and Daniel Gildenlow. You gotta check out the live version on The Return Of the Giant Hogweed it's awesome. Peter has a gorgeous voice in For Absent Friends.

Once again... I can't recommend enough watching them play live with Peter at the vocals. You can find videos of GENESIS live from this era... and they're stunning to see. I like to see how much you enjoy the band. I listen to the band like for the past 40 years when à friend made me discover them. A tip, although I do not know where you live, go to Hackett's gigs. They are increible ! Hé just did the Foxtrot tour and Seconds Out, and next year the Lamb (though not complete). It is worth it. And if you plan to go to à gig close to you, let me know. Hey, you're not alone, tough days will go away and as you said before, listen to only quality positive innovative music..it works!
There is a brilliant version of Absent Friends sung by Richard Sinclair (Hatfield/Camel etc). BTW Steve Hackett has toured with this song and told the audience to "tap along" i.e. the guitar tapping years before van Halen!!
I imagine you'll get to it. But if you like Nursery Cryme I'm confident you'll like Foxtrot too. I had these on each side of a cassette; they almost feel like a unit to me.
enjoying your plunge into my past. right into my wheelhouse. i consider genesis (until peter left), yes, and pink floyd to be "the big three". i put frank in a category of his own. impressed by how quickly you've gotten into frank. it's hard for a lot of people. many never "get it". i mean "frank fridays"? you just did that because you like it. he's the pinnacle for me. the final, and entirely different, piece of my puzzle it the grateful dead. we'll get to that ;)
Hogweed was a botanical threat. a invasive species. Peter plays it as a War of the worlds type threat. Phil gets a real workout in this one. Hey, hang on in there, tough times can be ridden out. be patient and follow your heart. but use your brain. Piano gets me too. Banks is doing classical music at the present ! just wrote a symphonic work called, Ebb and Flow..
Re: Tony's piano reminding you of Yanni -- a lot of "new age" musicians like Enya and David Arkenstone grew up listening to 70's prog bands for sure. I don't know about Yanni specifically, but he was probably also influenced -- like Tony -- by the romantic era classical masters like Rachmaninoff.
I honestly grew up with new age and Christian music... so I'm very familiar with Enya and yanni. I love them both lol. I can see the influences for sure.
acoustic I believe is all Rutherford on this album. Basic tracks were already recorded when Hackett joined and he just added electric parts late in the recording process.
@@L33Reacts Mmmm....Not sure here on "already recorded".... Some of the tracks were already composed, that's for sure, but recorded? I don't think so... Steve joined in December 70 and Nursery Cryme was recorded in August 71! And also, For Absent Friends is a Hackett composition, it would be odd Mike playing the guitar on a Hackett composition.... So, I would say acoustics are as usual a mix of Mike and Steve's 12-strings, and Steve augmented the compositions with both electric and acoustic guitar playing.
I can't wait to hear it live! Everyone has been hyping it up lol. These guys are exceptional in every sense of the word. I feel blessed to have found them :)
@@L33Reacts Yes and Genesis are my two favorite bands on the planet and I'm glad I discovered them young. It is music that will stick with you for the rest of your life and help you through the dark times. I know it has for me! You were mentioning Yanni. I believe one of his biggest influences was Vangelis, another Greek keyboard maestro I suggest checking out. He did four albums with Jon Anderson of Yes and many groundbreaking electronic, and symphonic electronic albums from the 70s through to 2021.
Dude you should really do Quadrant 4 (Billy Cobham Spectrum Album). Maybe you've heard it. Insane double bass shuffle everyone on it is ridiculous. Electric Lady Studios early 70's one take. Sorry for your cold. I just got over mine (3 weeks, ugh). Nice Genesis choices. OK, it IS hard to tell the difference often, but this is Phil on 'Absent Friends'. You get a pass. 'Hogweed' is undoubtedly Peter. Note the botanical name included at the end of this tongue-in-cheek tune. Nothing like concern for invasive species back in 1971! "immune to all our herbicidal battering" is such a fine line. Love how Genesis uses all their instruments to blend a rockin' masterpiece. "Kill them with your Hogweed hairs! Heracleum Mantegazziani"

So after 50 years I get to know that Chapman sounds similar to Gabriel. You never stop learning.
@@maraboo72Is that sarcasm? Might seem obvious to you but Lee is new to this style of music. Can I insult you?
Once again... I can't recommend enough watching them play live with Peter at the vocals. You can find videos of GENESIS live from this era... and they're stunning to see. "THE MUSICAL BOX" performed live on the Midnight Special is probably the best... but "RETURN OF THE GIANT HOGWEED" can be found, as well.. Great stuff... and excellent reactions, as usual. Hackett is brilliant.
I hope you're doing better... and remember... one day at a time. ...and time heals. Hang in there and all the best to you!
Hey John I appreciate that brother... I'm trying my best to hang in there. It just feels like one thing after another and I'm just struggling to even exist. But I know that this too shall pass and I will be ok eventually. I have all of you wonderful people behind me and all this beautiful music to uplift me... I'll be ok soon enough 🙂
I will definitely be doing genesis live after we finish up with nursery cryme as a wrap up to it
These guys have a huge catalog and it's all amazing. I hope you make it through as much as possible I think the secret to their greatness has alot to do with Tony Banks as main composer and arranger. @@L33Reacts
Hogweed is one my fave early genesis songs. There’s a great live video from them playing it on French tv I think. Phil is on fire
Great reaction.
One of the best from the best ❤ (And For Absent Friends is a gorgeous one as well!)
Take care and get well my friend! ❤
You rock prog I appreciate you buddy... I'm trying to get better but this virus has been kicking my families ass lol. Hopefully we will be better soon. Genesis helps alot
This is an INSANE song. Try to catch some of the lyrics. ❤❤
I typed some of the lyrics out as a reply to this and youtube delet3d it 😂😂😂 because of a word. Wow
Heracleum mentegazziani!!! 😊
Peter similarly has an aggressive tone on the song, "Back in N.Y.C."
Nos emocionamos juntos❤
I had these on each side of a cassette; they almost feel like a unit to me.
enjoying your plunge into my past. right into my wheelhouse. i consider genesis (until peter left), yes, and pink floyd to be "the big three". i put frank in a category of his own. impressed by how quickly you've gotten into frank. it's hard for a lot of people. many never "get it". i mean "frank fridays"? you just did that because you like it. he's the pinnacle for me. the final, and entirely different, piece of my puzzle it the grateful dead. we'll get to that ;)
Steve has a new live album out celebrating the 50th anniversary release of Foxtrot including a number of his solo offerings and it's stellar!
Really?? Hmm... I haven't even really touched foxtrot other then suppers ready i think. Maybe I should tackle that next :)
Holy Shit!! Foxtrot, as you might expect, is well worth the venture.@@L33Reacts
Still a threat. You can get blisters and even go blind if you get it in your eyes
Listen as Steve Hackett invents guitar tapping.
That shit blew my mind LOL he really did invent it here 🤣
Re: Tony's piano reminding you of Yanni -- a lot of "new age" musicians like Enya and David Arkenstone grew up listening to 70's prog bands for sure. I don't know about Yanni specifically, but he was probably also influenced -- like Tony -- by the romantic era classical masters like Rachmaninoff.
I honestly grew up with new age and Christian music... so I'm very familiar with Enya and yanni. I love them both lol. I can see the influences for sure.
thats phil.
acoustic I believe is all Rutherford on this album. Basic tracks were already recorded when Hackett joined and he just added electric parts late in the recording process.
Ahhhh ok that's cool. He killed it. Then Hackett came and just elevated it as well!
"Hogweed" has one of the best outros in the history of music and live it was even more powerful. They don't make 'em like these guys anymore.
He did four albums with Jon Anderson of Yes and many groundbreaking electronic, and symphonic electronic albums from the 70s through to 2021.
oh, and "hogweed" is an early warning song about invasive species..! hahaha
Dude you should really do Quadrant 4 (Billy Cobham Spectrum Album). Maybe you've heard it. Insane double bass shuffle everyone on it is ridiculous. Electric Lady Studios early 70's one take. Jeff Beck said it's the reason he kept his career going. Space Boogie is a 7/8 version of the shuffle There's a YT video of Simon Phillips explaining it.
First listen .
Likin this , a lot .
I'll require - of myself - a Deeper Dive into the Genesis inventory .
Enough of subjecting Others , to any such Requirements ...
やはりこの頃の、ピーターとフィルの声質は凄く似てますね
Good call. Yanni was a BIG fan of early Genesis.
Was he really?? No shit.... well that explains a lot! I love yanni. He's so awesome. Haha
It’s not Peter on Absent Friends.
Yeah I didn't realize till I woke up this morning lol I was on cold and anxiety meds last night, so I didn't peep that. My apologies. Phil was just showing us a glimpse of the future:)
Remember... they were 21 when they recorded this.....
Were 21 years old
Prodigies and virtuosos all around :)
Phil Collins was 17 when he sang this. (For Absent Friends)
He was 20 but still young when you consider the drumming on this album 👍
hope you eel better soon mate, will it be yes sunday?
Hopefully! I've been in and out of the hospital. But hopefully after work today I can do a video for tomorrow
@@L33Reacts look after yourself mate
Wait until you get on to 'Foxtrot'.
Actually it's Phil's vocal on 'Absent friends' Get well soon btw
Do a little homework. That's Phil Collins singing For Absent Friends. Peter is singing harmony though.
Yay! Your not going to yak all the way thru.
Nope not this time. Just for you les! 😘
Personally, I prefer the version form Genesis Live. I think it is much more powerful esp. the end.
I'm gonna do the genesis live one too! I just try to do the studio first so I get the full picture
Yeah, the live versions really take off on this one. Steve's latest versions really feel like they are gonna bring the ceiling down.
@@steeleye2112 Sorry, but I always struggle with his singer.
@@maraboo72 well that's art for you, totally subjective. I'm a heretic and I prefer Nad to Pete and Phil. Guess we should be grateful we have such a wide selection.
Was Nad the first singer? Or the last? I'm dumb lol
Sorry it’s Phil Collins
Tracks are playing too slow
Poor quality on the vocals....shame! 😔
Yeah that was Phil on absent friends. Lee...have a look at Genesis film shot in Belgium in 1972...you can see them playing this marvelous stuff live. Thanks for a great chanel.
