Drummer reacts to "Gates of Delirium" by YES

- I really don't even know what to type here. This was an engrossing and emotional video for me. As usual, Yes teleported me away from my worries and my problems and took me somewhere else. The first half is chaos, the second half is... bliss? I felt like I was in heaven after entering through the gates of delirium... And the angelic vocals at the end made me cry honestly.
If anyone is in a position to help out after the accident today... I would really appreciate. Everyone is ok but the car is impounded with literally all of our stuff in it.... my clothes.... my equipment... everything. But thank god everyone was ok... that's all that matters.

All donations and tips that come from you, go into my daughters college fund and a fund for channel equipment. I created this channel for her so she has videos of her father talking and doing something he enjoys(listening to music and talking about it) since I don’t have any of those of my father. I decided that all funds that might come from this will go to her as well :) thank you again for your generosity guys, I appreciate you all more then you will ever know.
Your name will be added to the Thank you supporters’ video that plays at the end of every video and you get to pick a video for me to react to. Thank you so much!! If you donate and pick a song, I will get to it in under 24 hours!

The last ‘quarter’ of this song ‘Soon’ is one of the most beautiful bits of music ever written. With ‘ close to the edge’, ‘Awaken’ and ‘The revealing science of God’ this song represents for me the pinnacle of Yes.
Hey bro good to see you! I will be tackling revealing science next:) this was certainly an emotional roller coaster 🎢
@@L33Reacts very exciting to hear! the revealing is certainly in my top 'quarter' of favorite yes tracks
TFTO is very underrated in my opinion, all 4 songs, not perfect but still great
Il y a dans Tales from topographic oceans une de leur pièce la plus expérimentale à mon avis, The Ancient
Yes
RIP Alan White and Chris Squire. What a combo.
Yes drummer Alan White actually wrote the amazing ascending melody that comes out of the battle section right before they slow down and go into "Soon". So when you said "This drummer is so talented" during that part, I thought it was very appropriate, because it wasn't just his killer groove there. He actually wrote that part of the piece. Not many know that he was also a very fine pianist. RIP, Alan White.
Absolutely, Alan started out on piano and then switched to drums. He also later taught himself basic guitar so he could compose themes and melodies for Yes.
I had no idea he played piano.
I do know that Chris was going to toss Alan out of a window if he didn't join Yes. Hahaha
That’s so wonderful ❤
Music as beautiful as this will always put you through the ringer. Believe me this one song has had me in tears so many times, but it always feels better afterwards, it's as if Jon gave me permission to feel however I wanted to. Never hide your heart and you'll always end up fine.
👍👍
Yeah this was a hard one for me emotionally. The first half was upbeat and had me fooled for what was coming 😅😂 I loved it though. This band is amazing.
Oh, this is going to be so much fun watching! I LOVE the Relayer album, it's one of the albums that have done the most to expand my ideas about music, and these three compositions are acts of genius both when it comes to composition, singing, musicianship and production. It's insane to think that most of it was recorded in Chris Squire's basement! :)
A truly extraordinary album, one of their top three studio works in my opinion, and it was far ahead of its time when released. Alan White's drumming and Steve Howe's guitar playing are nothing short of sensational (but have you heard "The Ancient"?) - I'm really looking forward to seeing a drummer react to this! :)
Usually Gates of The Delirium, And You and I, Turn of The Century, and Awaken makes people cry and get emotional!!! You are not alone Brother! Great Reactions!!!
Thanks bro I appreciate it so much 🙏 I've got a ton more Yes to do and I can't wait to hear what they have in store for me 😊
THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS TO MOST PEOPLE WHO HAVE A DEEP MUSICAL EAR. TRULY TOUCHES ONES HEART.
Don't worry about your tears....most all of us do the same every time we listen to this masterpiece.
My good friend passed away about 5 years ago now. They played 'Soon' at his funeral as this was his favourite album and he always said he wanted this to be played.
We understand- almost 50 years later this song (and album) still delivers an emotional wallop. Thanks for sharing.
Gates of Delirium, Sound Chaser and To Be Over are remarkable songs in one album.
I've listened to this song countless times, and I'm still never prepared for the beauty. Jon Anderson is the voice of hope. He's a shaman. Great reaction.
Thank you! I really appreciate it. 🙏 his voice was like an angel speaking right to my soul😢
Great reaction. The emotion of war and peace. Masterpiece.
This song never gets old. I've loved it for over 55 years. Amazing in concert and saw this particular show three times (Vancouver, Seattle and Portland).
The Gates of Delirium is 49 years old 😊
@@annakozlowska1110perhaps he meant 45 years.
This song is an interpretation of War and Peace, it is a literary work by Russian author Leo Tolstoy, as said by Jon, The song ramps up to the chaos of battle and then ends on a promise of peace.
Yes has a way of bringing out personal emotions other musicians just can't do. I've been listening to them since the 60's and, have seen them live 13 times. Once they got you emotionally, you are forever a fan. Great job, welcome to Yes.
Right on man! Yes is my favorite band on the planet.
For almost 50 yrs, this song has hit me emotionally more than any other. It's a remarkable testament to Yes' ability to touch our deepest feelings. Great heartfelt review!
Thank you John! I appreciate it. 🙏 this was an unforgettable experience for sure.
Alan White you ask? Alan White was with Yes for Many years!! He’s an incredible drummer! You’ll agree the more you hear him! Buford is awesome and a legend in his own style!❤
There is a story about war & afterwards -here in Gate…. Fantastic Live!
I simply say, you're not the first grown man to be moved to tears by a beautiful piece of music. I was and have been many times.
Seen them 20 times live.... believe me they do it
"His voice is like an instrument."
The best thing about Yes is that not only they produced brilliant timeless music but they went out on the road and reproduced it perfectly and occasionally even better than the studio . There legacy will go on forever .
The cover of this and most of the other Yes albums in the 70s was created by Roger Dean, probably the most famous album cover artist ever. He used airbrush and a marbling technique to fashion strange and wonderful images of alien worlds with buildings that seem to have grown out of the landscape.
Dean's influence has permeated through sci fi, too :) Avatar, Starfield, Star Wars (specifically Mortis), Marvel, Halo all have taken cues from Dean's distinct style
Howe: "Jon had virtually written Gates Of Delirium but we all contributed ... Like “Close to the Edge,” “Gates” has a sort of improvised feel though it is actually structured. It’s a very radiant piece, full of ever-changing scenes: a powerful song ... It took a lot of control to play “Gates,” which is about as complex as anything Yes arranged ... If you look at the way that The Yes Album was followed and superseded and improved on and you get to Close to the Edge and Topographic Oceans and Relayer. I mean that’s a monumental chunk of work and it went on."
The best YES song EVER!!!
I saw yes perform this with an orchestra on their Magnification Tour. My friend and I looked at each other at the end and said "we can both die happy".
This my friend is why they are/were the greatest of all time......the story goes that the guys collected a load of car parts from a junkyard and mounted on them on a rack to use during the battle scene, Alan knocked it over accidently during recording and they kept it in . I remember seeing a rack full of junk , including a frying pan during their live performance , which Jon hammered on
My friend, your honest, heart-wrenching comments demonstrate that your emotions have perfectly interpreted the music. And isn't that what music is supposed to do? Brilliant reaction dude, probably the best I've seen and heard, thank you for uploading!
Wow thank you so much 🙏 what a beautiful comment. I guess wearing my heart on my sleeve has its advantages. Especially with a reaction channel haha
This song definitely moved me in a way that has never happened before. It was a very unique experience and yall got to be there with me :)
Great Quarter reaction. Another Masterpiece by Yes. You MUST listen to SOUND CHASER on this same album. Alan White is the drummer. He had the daunting task to take over after Bill Bruford left. Alan White is one of the best drummers of all time. Listen to "INSTANT KARMA and IMAGINE by John Lennon. His work on every Yes album after CTTE is just amazing. Watch some live videos of him. One of the greatest.
Thanks for watching my friend 😃 I will check out sound chaser. Alan absolutely killed this song. I was in awe half way through lol
Alan White toured Close To The Edge around the world after it’s debut, lest we forget. After many, many years and many, many tours, he owned it, too.
No one could fill Bill Bruford’s shoes, but now we are discovering no one can fill Alan White’s shoes either.
And 'Soon" is humanity's prayer for eternal peace...
Back in 74, this one was so new and different that, somewhat like Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, it divided opinion. Perhaps it still does, but I could listen to it all day long then and now. It stands shoulder to shoulder with Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony, Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Pure raw blissful emotion. Like being swept downstream by raging flood water through the rapids and over waterfalls and ending up floating gently on the ocean at sunset.
My absolutely favorite of your reaction videos so far. Don't be afraid to be moved on camera, it will bond certain music lovers to you like crazy. I'll be watching. Cheers bro.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it my friend! I feel honored to share my experience with yall. It's hard to post the videos where I get emotional but it's also inauthentic not too so I just suck it up 🤣
Yes the greatest band
King Crimson is up there too!
How about Cardiacs?
Loved your reaction, especially the last quarter! This song tries to express the futility of war, the chaotic middle section is a sonic tapestry of the horrors on the battlefield. The Soon ending is like a call for peace and reconciliation. I've been a Yes fan for over 50 years. Love that you mentioned BTBAM in your reaction, definitely love their approach to prog and metal. Just saw them perform the whole Parallax II album live last month, an incredible show. I also was lucky enough to see Yes in 1975 in their prime performing Gates live right after it came out in 1974!
I'm glad you love BTBAM! They are amazing and completely changed my musical views when I first heard them as a kid. I heard Colors when I was like 12 and I've never looked back. Thank you for watching my friend I'm glad you enjoyed.
Saw them the same year in new jersey …we were so much at peace after the show ended, we were the last ones to leave the stadium. As i looked around at the crowd during the relayer and CCTE sets, all i saw were dropped jaws 👍🏼😎 MOST MEMORABLE LIVE PERFORMANCE IVE EVER BEEN WITNESS TO…
I love those key changes in the instrumental section of Soon, between the verses. Just gets more powerful every time.
Dude yeah that was amazing. It was like rising tension with keys! Everything came together beautifully
I had the privilege of seeing YES perform this in it's entirety at Roosevelt Stadium in New Jersey in 1975 or 76 . Outdoor stadium and the new laser light show was something that we never saw before, it's said that it was seen on the buildings in NYC. What another amazing show bye. YES .We sat on the pitcher's mound with the proper enhancing items.
Played both years , 76 they played the Beatles I’m Down for the oncore 🪲
Absolutely my favorite Yes album, good choice.
Ahh... Now you understand. Welcome to the world of Yes.
For a drummer like yourself, I've gotta say that the song Sound Chaser off of this same album "Relayer" is my favorite drum part Alan White ever did. The intro with keyboard and drum is very jazzy, but fantastic.
I would put Alan's sensational drumming on Ritual my number one, though Alans drumming on Sound Chaser is right on par with Ritual😄😄
Soundchaser is just crazy Awesome Sauce! Alan goes Nuclear on the drums. That intro is legendary.
Like CTTE being present at a concert your taken to another place.
Gates it Delirium …… War and Peace is a good analogy.
There is only one YES.
YES...they always take you on a journey with their music. Very powerful stuff, huh? I've been listening to this band for about 45 years now. Glad you are discovering this music and appreciating it. Enjoy the journey my friend.
my first YES show was 1972 and Last was just prior to Chris Squires Passing RIP
This is beyond powerful! It brought me too my knees in my heart.
I listened till the end - I hope your family is doing well.
Thank you my friend. Everyone is OK and safe now. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Sound Chaser's drums are amazing too!
A few people have mentioned that track on this video already so... I guess I will do it! Sounds like a plan to me 🙏
sound chaser is like nothing youve ever heard. it grabs you from the opening notes and doesnt let you go.
I have been listening to this for nearly 50 years now and "Soon" still brings me to tears too. Perhaps the most beautiful 6+ minutes of music ever recorded.
Such a masterpiece, inspired, as I understand it, by another masterpiece (War and Peace)!!!❤
The ending .... That is as close as we get to heaven while still alive
The entire Going For The One album by Yes is perfect. Be prepared for that one. The Relayer album, wow.
Wait until he hears Awaken!
Awaken - ua-cam.com/video/RzMqhhVAmm4/v-deo.html
@@L33Reacts Thanks
Hey brother, thanks for checking out Awaken. I have another really awesome track that I love called The Solution, off of the underrated Album: Open Your Eyes! I fricken love everything about this album and the sound is amazing! I think that this entire album kicks ass! It's kind of a departure from the really long epic compositions! I really think you'll get into The Solution and Love Shine, maybe you could do a double track reaction to these two songs that I think will really hit home with you. Open Your Eyes, one of their best. ✌
Quarter! Masterpiece! Even better the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time you hear it❗️😎

@@lesblatnyak5947 Hey 36!😎
The first time I listened to this master piece I could not understand any english, but it made me feel like I finally found something I was missing and at the same time it was something I didn't know existed but felt familiar.
I hope everything gets better for you and your family! Best wishes!
Thank you I really appreciate it. It's tough right now but I know we'll get through it together.
Isn't it beautiful how music breaks all barriers of language and just speaks to the soul. I love that little story of yours, so beautiful .
You're an awesome dude and you're definitely on track, I saw this tour live with Pat Moraz on keyboards and it was killer. This is one of my favorite Yes albums! Relayer
I missed it! Goodness knows what I was up to - I was definitely into them ever since Close To The Edge came out. But for some reason, I kept missing them on tour.
thanks Joseph I really appreciate it man. I tend to be very hard on myself so hearing stuff like this really makes my day
This band is unmatched in their ability to provoke deep emotional response. I admit. It still brings tears after 50 years!
The first part is the musical depiction of a battle. Songs with similar sections include "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" by RUSH and "Karn Evil 9" (full} by ELP.
If I remember correctly, the soon section at the end, represents peace after war time. The chaotic part represents war. Based on War and Peace!
Tears are Good, as too, I am again tearing to this Song.
Yin & Yang, Black & White, War & Peace (as in Tolstoj...) My favourite Yes song together with Awaken and Close to the Edge.
The big difference in sound partly gets elicited by the one-Yes-album-keyboardist Patrick Moraz, who also did great prog fusion albums on his own.
Steve Howe's steel in soon is priceless.
Last night I was just speechless at how this brought you to tears. It’s incredibly powerful to see. Thank you for sharing what was clearly intense and difficult emotions. Wow.
That aside, you should add something from Chris Squire’s solo album Fish out of Water to your future react list; it was made around this same time, and it’s a great insight into what’s Jon and what’s Chris in the harmony vocals. It’s an incredible album. Lucky Seven is the track I’d suggest, you’ll definitely dig it.
Thank you so much Karl. It means so much to me to hear that. I've learned that being as open and honest as possible really makes life easier (in most cases) and it translates well into these videos.
I love sharing my experiences with yall because I know for some out there that music is really, really important to them. And seeing someone experience one of their favorite songs they've heard a million times for the first time, can be almost... dare I say a spiritual experience?
Yes!
The War & then Peace, based on Tolstoys "War & Peace"...Keep digging in..There is no Band like Classic YES, & I've seen everyone. TY for having an open mind.🥰🔥🔥🔥🖤 LIVE WAS ADDICTING. OMG, I'm so glad you're Family is Ok!💯💐🙏
Alan White was the drummer for John Lennon before he hooked up with Yes.
Relayer is probably my favorite Yes album, even though it doesn't have my favorite Yes personnel. As a compositional achievement, the three songs that make up the album are probably the most cohesive and diverse among all their great songs. "Gates of Delirium" is an incredible song that has brought similar emotions in similarly turbulent times for me more than a quarter of the times I've heard it. I've been where you are and wish the best for you right now.
This was one of my 10 most listened-to albums (vinyl!!) in high school (mid 70's)
Yes is a band that gave us great music for so many decades... I can't count the braincells I lost (or spawned) listening to their stuff.
I had the great luck to see them, front row, in a concert-in-the-round (rotating stage) in about 1978-ish. Up there, we were lisatening to the monitors, as the PA shot right over the top of the carousel. Just crazy. Didn't need no shrooms that night... the air was a live with color and texture.
Anyway, hey, from the same album : Sound Chaser & To Be Over ... they flow together, for me.
Things will look up. Breathe. It's better than the alternative.
I loved that concert in thr round. 1978 Wembley.
Yet another Amazing Yes Album. I saw all of this Live in 1975, at my 2nd Yes Concert. Patrick Moraz on Keyboards for this one.
Mind blowing, Incredible Music. 🎶❤️🎶
Been in an accident with my then three-ish daughter when we went off the road in winter. No human injuries, but we were really, really close to hitting a stone wall that would have hurt us bad.
Scary stuff! Take care and keep treasuring those loved ones ❤
Sorry to hear that bro. Cars can be such deadly forces when things go awry. Danger is always lurking. Thank you for watching as always 🙏
You need to listen to Ritual live.. AMAZING percussion section in it..
Love how they thread and weave their melodies.....juxtapose themes.....be adventurous with their sound
Such creativity and freedom. It's honestly so refreshing compared to the stuff that I hear nowadays.
Very nice reaction Lee. Don't apologize for letting your emotions show. It's soul cleansing and songs are the suds lol The third time I saw Yes, they were promoting Relayer. I swear John's voice sounded like it was coming from above. I still get emotional listening to "Gates of Delirium" you're a good man Lee, hang in there buddy it'll be ok.
I'm sure you'll also enjoy Tales from the Topographic Oceans too. Probably already mentioned on here but it came out between 'Close to the Edge' and this album and is a double album with just 4 songs on it, but each quarter is an epic.
I've seen this band in many different configurations since the late 60s. Alan White is definitely my favorite drummer to watch live. While both are genius players, the main difference to me is during a 'live' Buford performance he is the technical drummer to want to study. Then, there's Alan White, who I saw for the first time when they were touring this album. White, while playing this song live, performs like he could do the work playing drums and still grab a beer for you. He was having so much fun!
it gets into your soul, and that is wonderful mate....... you have a heart for this music...... been my fave band since 1977, when i was 12
It's about time I see someone cry listening to this, I know I have for 50 years. Masterpiece. Sorry to hear about the accident, we can only control so much, we have to carry on, YES will
always be there to take you to another place, another time, at the Highest Level of Musicianship, and Creativity.
Great reaction. Thanks!
This is war and peace.
Mankind's folly.
It blew me away when I first heard it. Soon brought me to tears too!
Great reaction. I didn't care for Tales, and they came back strong with this album.
Polar opposite "Close to the Edge"...
You're right!
Your reaction brought tears to my eyes as well, and I've been listening to this since 1974!
I remember rushing to the record store and buying this album when it came out in 1974. The first time I heard Gates of Delirium, your reaction "HOLY FUCK" and "WHAT THE FUCK" is an understatement of how we all felt when we herd this, and is spot on! IMHO, this is their seminal and culminating work. Thank you for your reaction I loved it! And, just BE YOU, fuck those that are offended!
The final movement/song "Soon" always brings tears to my eyes, always!! One last thought in those days I imagined myself a drummer, Alan White (and Steve Gadd) were the guys I wanted to emulate!
YES: amazing drumming: "The Ritual (Nous Somme du Soleil)" from "Tales from Topographic Oceans" album 1974
It's the way the track starts off nice and controlled and lulls you into a false sense of security and then halfway through it just goes ham and blasts everything.... and lastly it takes you to that lovely and serene place.. On listening in the seventies it was fabulous... so glad you enjoyed it. I was SO lucky to live through these days and go and watch the bands... Keep on Rocking L33...
“YESSHOWS” ‘Live’ version of “Gates…” is A M A Z I N G !!!!
❤
Sorry to hear about the accident. Hope everyone is OK.
You're correct, the late Alan White on drums. I did stay to the end, but not a fan of those key words.
👍😎

No need to apologise Lee, sorry to hear about your incident. Also, it's ok to cry, hell, it's good to cry sometimes. Best wishes bro.
My favorite part in the song is when they switch to 11/8 at 12:10 but the song together I listen to almost everyday
Been loving Gates for 49 years! Probably close to 500 listens. The greatest band on this or any other planet❗️❗️❗️😎
I've only heard about 6 songs from them so far.... and wow. Yeah. They are absolutely amazing.
@@L33Reacts Your journey has only just begun❗️😎
And King Crimson
Nice to see you being amazed and moved by this masterpiece as I have been myself, nearly...40 years ago (oh shit). The often moving music that Yes produced in the 70s is timeless and I'm delighted that it still has the same effect today on ears that have grown up with a far greater proliferation of genres and production in music than was the case then. It confirms my judgement, when I was about fifteen , a friend a little older than me said to me: "Heavy metal is great, but you have to know that there's a world inside you that only one genre of music can reveal to you". And from the first notes I knew that the music of Yes would be with me all my life.
i hope everything is alright . This song gets me everytime, and i've been listening to it since 1975. A master work of art.
You are now officially indoctrinated into Yes.
You're absolutely right: Bill Bruford and Alan White are very different drummers. And, they are both very good - but then you have to be an extraordinary drummer to handle these Anderson/Squire/Howe compositions.
My absolute favorite yes song, and that is saying something ^^
That was beautiful brother! That you are able to have it touch you so deeply. Thats the magic.
Fabulous!!!
Hey Scot!😎
That is one word for it.... I'd also add mind blowing and emotional fury 😀🤣
The Live Cobo Hall, Yesshows Album Version of Gates of Delirium, is in my opinion, a much more vivid and emotional Experience. Bon Voyage !
Same opinion here.... Anderson voice sounds anger too...
Especially the "Soon" section.
Squire: "It was never played as a piece of music from beginning to end until it was all edited together ... But after we played it on stage I was happy to put that version on the Yesshows album, because by then it had taken on an identity."
Just in case no one has mentioned it, Alan White is the drummer on John Lennon’s Imagine album
This is bsed on the book 'war and peace'''' the album has replacement keyboard player. one of the reasons the sound is quite differant
Now check out the other 2 songs on the album
saw steve howe using his pedal steel guitar do the soon section of this in aberdeen scotland in a hotel function room 30 years ago... so beautiful...
The transition between the "victory march" and the opening of "Soon" - the slow, dreamlike bit beginning around 16:40 here - I've always felt that one to signify moving from the immediate aftermath to a point where the war has become memory or history, fifty years or hundreds of years later, but it is still alive in the shared memories of the nation. And the final section shows that the pain and grief remain present this long after too, even after all those who lived through the war are gone: the shadow of darkness and loss is twined into the sunshine and light of the music right up to the end...
The droning sound in the background beginning at 17:12 is so evocative - like the blade of a sword or an old spear slowly drawing a line through the haze, like a final memorial for all those who were lost and a signal: "Never again!". The emotional impact of that moment is like that of "the Last Post" played on trumpet.
You said "thank God". That's a good start. Follow that thought. Love that YES strikes you heart strings. Mine too.
Did you hear the thunderclap right after I mentioned my Christian bias?? The lord was telling me to shut up and let you guys go on with your lives. 😃🤣
@@L33Reacts You've thanked God for your family being OK from the wreck, and that you're cleaning up your language. Maybe God is drawing you to his Son. If that's the case, do not refuse.

5:19 that’s right, different beast
6:24 Yes will always take you where you’ll least expect them to
8:23 yes he is, great drummer and very different sound to Bruford
10:06 Chris Squires bass is at the core of it all, he dictates the intensity
