  • Well I decided to go and have a try at Scratby today for an early bass. The beach is shallow, and lumps up well on a northerly gale. The wind had eased to a north west 20-25mph today after yesterdays 40mph+ blow, so there should be plenty of feed in the water. The tackle shop in Caister isnt open on a Wednesday, so I didnt really have the right bait, but Ive had bass on prawns before.

I had another go at Scratby yesterday and a fat flounder saved the blank last cast. The fella fishing just down from me had had a couple of bass and several other bits before I arrived. The day before I took the dog down and a fella had 2 out 1 of which was a tidy fish close to 5lb up Hemsby end. I’ll probably have another bash next week. You’ve got to be in it to win it 🎣Did you fish the slope end of Scratby as it’s really shallowed out that end. It’s a bit deeper further along the beach although not much but a few feet more water can make a difference I think🎣 good effort mate. I’ll pm you a map of where I fish down there but don’t make promises although I have had some brilliant days fishing on the bass and hounds there. You’ll know when it starts to fish really well in a couple of weeks because it’ll be full of weed and crap😂🎣

hahaha I was straight down the slopes and steps were the ice cream man parks. Hopefully I will be back in the boat when it starts getting really good. I find its best there when the water gets a few degrees warmer. In the summer its alive off there with hounds, knee deep in them.

Unlucky mate at least you got out and tryed. Was going to go there next Monday as never fished scratby. Will postpone it a few weeks i think and go Walcott seams to be fishing well at the minute for bass, dabs, dogs and whiting

It was the first time I had fished it. It was just a little too shallow in the northerly swell.

Well I'd expect you would be struggling there at the moment , could have done well hunting down the flat fish though. I keep trying to get pull in shore caught herring but it does seem very elusive to me. Was fishing caister just two days ago and had nothing myself, not even a lump of seaweed to give me a good excuse.

I had a few fish at Caister a few days ago, only doggies, whiting and a dab, but better than nothing. There isnt the flat fish numbers about now, the seals have thinned them out.

I haven't been up to Scratby for years. I was wondering if the outer harbour has had any effect on things like sandbanks growing or shrinking or fishing spots changing?

It’s the first time I’ve ever fished it on the beach. The outer harbour stopped longshore drift at Hopton, so the beach stopped getting replenished with drifting sand. It all changed the tide on south beach Yarmouth

@@beanysfishing2555 I thought it might have done. I don't get out much to see because I broke my back a bit and it's bloody hard trying to get on a beach!
