- More 2008 9-3 Aero XWD headlight stuff. We start disassembling the innards and get the LED strips in. We also come up with a fun solution for the orange side marker LED issue that plagues 2008 model year cars. Most parts shown in this video were purchased from TheRetrofitSource.com using my own sad money.
19:55 LED stuff. The boost/buck converters were purchased through Amazon. They're listed as "6 Pack LM2596 DC to DC Buck Converter 3.0-40V to 1.5-35V Power Supply Step Down Module (6 Pack)". They measure 45 * 20 * 14 mm, so they're tiny. Spin the potentiometer on these about 15-20 times counterclockwise to reduce voltage before connecting LEDs. You don't want to fry them. CONFIRM VOLTAGE with a multimeter on the output side. The LEDs are standard 5mm size clear lens LEDs that illuminate amber in color. I couldn't find the order so I have no idea what wavelength (exactly color) they are. Sorry. I think I bought them from either Digikey or Mouser online like, 5 years ago. The wire is some nice stranded 24 AWG stuff I had laying around. Also bought through Amazon. I used a 9-volt battery for testing and standard low voltage test leads from Northern Tool that I also bought forever ago.

Alright!! I'm holding you to that! 🤣 My brother is doing something similar for his 9-3. He has an 06 Aero that we are about to facelift. He ordered the 18” LED strip. Think that is too long?

@@austin8607 yep. Too long. 12" or 14" is the proper length. I go over it in this video.
I figured 18” would be too long but there isn't anything between 12” and 18” on the TRS website. Figured we will probably have to wrap the extra in black tape. He wants to do the color change but it's 100 dollars for the strip and any extra 70 for the controller. I think he's going to stick with the white LED. Are yours the switch backs? And if they are do you plan to wire the switch back?
@@austin8607 oh god, that tacky crap. I hate RGB. Mine are just the profile pivot switchbacks. Non sequential. Yes, I'll show how I wired them.
Hi, I`m from Europe, having US version. I really do not like these orange side panels, do you think it is easy to replace them with white ones from european version (my xenons are ok so I consider taking these panels from some cheap non-xenon donor)? Or would it be better to get european xenon lamp and replace the whole lamp?
I've seen it done both ways. From what I remember (it's been years) the orange reflector is easily removed. The hardest part of the entire job is just removing the giant plastic lens from the housing. Once you're in there everything is simple enough.
