Fixing the Saggy Back End of My Wife's 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero XWD with the eSaabParts.com Spring Kit!

- Опубліковано 2 сер 2024
- Welcome to the Channel! In today's episode I do a bunch of suspension work to my wife's 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero XWD including replacing the rear springs with the eSaabParts XWD Suspension Conversion kit! This completely fixed our saggy rear end on the combi that was caused by the factory Nivomat shocks failing and the previous owner replacing them with regular shocks. Replacing the nivomat shocks without changing the springs actually caused the shocks to prematurely fail and leak out all of their oil. This then caused the combi's ride to suffer. The correct way to fix this is with the eSaabParts kits listed below. Since we went with the 10" lowering spring we opted for FWD Aero Manual Transmission front springs to give the car the right height front and rear and went with a stock shock in front.
I also discuss the difference between FWD and XWD rear shock mounts, and why you can use an XWD rear shock mount in a FWD car and why it's BETTER!.
As of the shooting of this video the suspension was settling, but it's turned out perfect. The car now rides and handles well, plus the rear is no longer saggy.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN WORKING WITH SPRINGS!

This video is to be a guide to help people see how to work on their Saab. If you want to see the exact factory directions please look at the Saab Workshop Information System referenced above (WIS). That will give you the exact factory Saab tech guide to working on your Saab. This method incorporates tricks learned from years of working on Saabs. If you have any questions please let me know. Great video! Thanks for the parts details and good explanation.
Great video and nice cars too :) I changed struts on my 9-3 Hirsch last year. Feels great on the road.
great job......love all ur upgrades and repairs great vids ty jimmy hershey pa area here
Have you ever been to the Carlisle Import and Performance show?
Any tips for getting the bolt at the bottom of the strut out?
WIS XWD spec for rear lower shock hex head bolt calls for 110 ft. Lbs., not plus 90 degrees. And, it would be much easier to mount the bottom of the shock first, then mount the cross stay. And, since I don't have xenon headlights, I'm sure I don't have auto-leveling for them. However, great video! Thanks for the info. Now, I can go out to the garage and dive in!
Excellent vid, thank you! Have a question. One of my rear absorbers is blown so I'll be replacing both. Can I just swap out for Bilstein B6's and call it a day or do I have to do the springs as well? '08 9-3 Aero XWD wagon.
You'll need to swap out for the whole kit if you have the stock rear springs. Otherwise it'll sag.
You should Jack it up slightly on the shocker before releasing the nut 👍
Any idea what the standard height bilstein shocks for the kit might be? The kits are unavailable on E Saab.
The kits are unavailable because part of the spring conversion kit comes from GM and cannot be purchased currently because of the strike. The shocks themselves are standard Bilstein shocks, but the important part is the spring kit.
Hi, so the bilstein shocks that you are putting on this car in the video are standard not self levelling anymore ??? Have I understood it correctly?? The reason I'm asking is because i just bought a 2009 93 2.0t B207R xwd aero and the previous owner has changed the springs and shocks and, unfortunately, not for the self levelling one's, the car drives fine actually so should I just leave as it is???
I have a titan grey xwd aero combi as well ! 125k I love it . its my 4th saab and 1st xwd……. prev. owner put in new rear shocks, and I cannot idendify if they are "self leveling" or not. advice? ty for this vid, and thankyou for your rear diff cross reference video...very valuable info
If it's a saab shock it should have a PN on it. You can look that up on eSaabParts or shoot me a picture of the PN to my email and I can help.
Also thanks! That video took a ton of research but I figured i may as well share that legwork
Is the maptun Coilover kit installed the same way?
It would be similar, but I believe the adjuster for that kit goes on the bottom. I actually wrote up instructions that are on my website www.saabdr.com for the fwd kit.
So tell me how you feel about a saab cause i have one and the problem i have with it that it misfire and started smoking real bad and through alot of codes sounds crazy all because i washed the motor one day and wet the ECM.....lol that's when it all started. So i'm trying to find ways are someone who really knows about this 2003 saab 9-3 20T
In my Saab 9-5 wagon I have saggy rear as well. I was thinking weather I should use regular new springs or strenghtened ones.
I ended up using strengthened springs. Worked well, no more saggy rear.
Saab Dr could I tell me how low is the car now? Are you using 10” springs with 1” spacer? Does this can be lower than stock? Stock is about four fingers height so what about now? And front? Thank you!
It is lower than stock with the 10" spring and 1" spacer -- stock height is normally acheived with a 12" spring and the 1" spacer.
Great video but I need to do on my 9-3X 2.0T XWD SC, do you know if the process is the same ? Ride height is different guess I’ll need different shocks / springs maybe ?
Did you figure it out? I have a 9-3X aswell and the rear sits really low.
@@alexandercarlsson yes think so, used Koni Special Active Shocks 8245-1011 and Eibach 350lb 12” spring with 2.5” aluminium spacer, needed to put 25-30mm bump stop inside top mount before fitting springs though….
My 9-3 sc (FWD) sitts lower on my rear left side. I had a broken spring and thougth that was the issue. So new springs and coils. Still low.
But if i jack up and down the rear its perfekt, till i release the handbrake.. then the ass drops down.
Any ideas?
Did you order the right springs? There are so many different rear springs for these cars that getting the right set is imperative.
Do u dont need to compres the rear shocks before instaling?
You may need to slightly press up on it to align it. Unlike springs or MacPherson struts there is no need to compress a shock.
Do you think you can a video on changing ATF on one of the v6s?
Definitely can and will. Need to do the ATF on the NG 9-5 once my shop driveway is a driveway again (it's all snowed in right now)
Thanks will be good info. Very unclear on intervals for the 2.8s and my 09 9-3 Aero XWD is coming up. Any truth to staying away from Synthetic ATF on these?
@saabdr what is the rating of the springs?
You would have to reach out to eSaabParts to find out.
So you put 10" spring with 1" spacer? That's what they do on the saloon. On the sportcombi, many people go for 12" spring and no spacer, because, well, the back is a bit heavier and that is getting it to the stock ride height (for TX, so a bit lower for an Aero), with is sort of what you want for an XWD car. Anyway, kudos to Matt that he offers those things as a set and he was able to ship those isolators to me all the way from USA to central Europe (since I got Bilsteins elsewhere and those Eibachs US models only available in UK in Europe).
We wanted to lower the car slightly, and it's actually taller in back now than it was before. -- Definitely wouldn't want to go any lower though. We had contemplated doing the Maptun coilovers on the car, but I knew it would end up almost slammed if we did that, so we didn't. Lol My wife has a thing for lowered cars and now 3 of her 4 are lowered from stock and she's happy :-)
@@SaabDr it definitely has to be higher than it was with weak xwd springs :)
Hmm, seems like I should also find a wife with several cars and some urge to modify them! :)
@@PeterChomanic I don't even have to urge her to modify them, she just wants to and I let her pick her own mods. So far so good. -- She only started out with one car, I may have convinced her to have more than one. Lol
Hello Saab DR! Great channel, I used your video to update my saggy ass too on my TX! :D Anyway, I went with the Eibach 1000.250.0500, 13322645 spring Isolators, and Bilstein B6s 24-102520 and drives very well but unfortunately the left rear (passenger side UK) is sitting lower than the drivers side rear. All parts were new and identical! What have I done to cause this!? Its about 2cm lower on level ground. Is there a correct way around to put these springs!? I faced both out with the Eibach logo. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks Rob.
So these are not self leveling shocks any more?
Correct.
Send the leaky shocks off where to get rebuilt?
I've heard that Bilstein shocks can be rebuilt. I'm not sure where. I was going to ask around.
Shocks can be rebuilt in general, but probably not worth it now with those proces of new (depending on country I guess, but B6 is still friendly priced compared to manual labour of rebuild and material billed. could be worth rebuilding some crazy expensive sportier setup I guess).
Too bad I was not able to get anyone to rebuild those nivomats / autolevel shocks here, that was my primary plan that did not work out.
Cant find FWD video!
That's totally my fault. I meant to upload those in tandem and didn't. I apologise for that -- I should have it up soon and linked
I guess "Fixing My Wife's Saggy Rear End" wasn't a wise title?
Lol That's why it's not the title
