Looking thru the results on your website, i find it interesting that the Titleist ProV1 Yellow was individually tested. I started using this ball in 2022 after doing my own personal testing. I use the very scientific method of lost and found golf balls. After a dive into the local fescue looking for my Chrome Soft, which i didn't find, i came away with a couple strays, one of them being a 2022 Yellow ProV1. I was running low on my Chrome Soft stash i had built up a few years earlier and so i brought this walk-on into action. I immediately noticed the flight and spin really suited my TSR-2 9* driver and being a slightly older golfer, I found the unique yellow cover easy to see in flight and quick to identify on the fairway or green and easier to spy in the rough. Most everything else out there is white. I found myself hunting down a box of Yellows at the local golf store and I've since gathered more boxes to get me thru this season and into the next. For me, finding a driver / ball combination that fit my swing has added back yardage lost the last several years to age and poor equipment choices. It really pays off to educate myself to whats available. Thanks for all your work.

Thanks for releasing the entire raw data set! As someone with a high swing speed, I struggle to keep the ball from skyrocketing into the air. Based on the list, I’m going to test and compare the following generally low-flying balls:
Expensive: Pro V1x, Pro V1x Left Dash
Mid-Price: Bridgestone Tour B X, Callaway Tour Soft X
Cheap: OnCore ELXR, Snell MTB Prime

But why????? Soft balls = lower launch. If your desire to hit it lower, use a softer ball. THAT's what their own science says!!!! Don't believe the data they're presenting you here. They used a 7.5 degree head, but if you notice, they also made sure that the launch was reasonable and so the spins are wicked high, actually.
You don't need a new ball, you need a lower lofted driver, go with 3, 4, or 5 degree heads, obtainable from the Long Driver shops

​@@TheOtherKine With all due respect man, I'm not buying a brand new speciality driver that is far less accurate and consistent than what I'm already getting out of my Titleist TSR3 8 degree.
Their data also does not support the conclusion that softer balls launch lower, just that they spin less on average. Their lowest launching ball off the driver is the Kirkland Performance V3+ which is literally a 91 compression ball.
The other huge thing I would ask you to consider is the other 90% of the time I'm not hitting a driver - I.E. woods, irons wedges. I also need those to fly lower and this data set 100% lead me to the solution.

I tested out the Tour B X today vs the Chrome X and the Bridgestone blew me away. Long, accurate, and low flying today off all my clubs while still retaining moderate levels of spin. They performed stellar today in a super windy day. I could also tell the Callaway was spinning too much off my irons, which is 100% backed up by the data.
Dick's sells the Bridgestone B X for 3 dozen at a time at a reasonable price, so I'm gonna stock up over the winter when they go on sale. Thanks MyGolfSpy!

awesome study! did you review the cheaper more common golf balls from big brands and do you have a view of performance per $? I've been usingthe Kirklands and still not sure from this study whether I should bin them off and pay more (Medium swing, 18 handicap and Driver has a tendendancy to go way way right when I hit a bad one)

Testing golf balls in this manner is resource-intensive and because of this, we think it's best to focus on the best-performing balls (aka the premium/urethane category). Other than a price preference, there's no reason golfers (that care about performance) should be playing a 2-piece ionomer ball.

“No point to using a ionomer (Surlyn) ball” you say, yet Tony repeatedly over the years has admitted, and tests from other sources have also proven that ionomer balls will curve less, resulting in slightly straighter shots. I don’t know of anyone other than scratch (or better) handicap golfers that would not benefit from hitting straighter shots. I can put up with an occasional shot rolling out a little bit further on the green, even if one occasionally goes into the back fringe, in order to hit straighter shots that don’t go as far offline. I love hitting a lot of straight shots down the fairway, and also into the greens, and regularly shooting in the upper 70’s and some low 80’s. I hit it high enough I don’t need a high spin golf ball. Try ionomer balls and you may hit an extra fairway or two, avoid the deeper rough a time or two, and hit greens in regulation more often as well. Straighter shots are almost always better shots.

@@scottdean27 When it comes to total performance ( tee to green and everything in between), I don't think you'll find anyone advocating for ionomer > urethane. If hitting the ball straighter is a priority, there are plenty of options, of which playing an ionomer ball "might" be one....but it's pretty far down the list for me and isn't worth the performance trade off...The only reason to play an ionomer ball is to save money which is a legitimate consideration for many golfers - but if it's about shooting lower scores, ionomer doesn't have a seat at the table

I haven’t heard much about the Titleist tour speed especially since I just listened to over an hour on golf balls and correct me if I’m wrong but not one mention of this ball. The Titleist ProV1 & X get much More attention . I’m 61 and an 8 handicap and I switched f/ the ProV1X to the tour speed and I find the tour speed is just as good if not better then it’s supposedly better V1 & X models, they are also $12 a dozen cheaper. Is there more favoritism shown to the higher priced Titleist balls do to dominance on tour and what the public is buying? I would like to know what MGS thinks of the Titleist Tour Speed.

i totally agree. And the funny thing to me is that everyone that watches MGS knows how hard they harp on "getting fitted" - because what the pros play is RARELY what us commoner peasants should play. I know those guys love the spin, and the ball speed #'s show those high-end urethane balls being faster. But what the tests haven't done (probably not been attempted) is how well some of those slower balls perform on off-center hits. It seems to me that the harder balls require an excellent strike to compress the core, while the softer balls give you a little help with mis-hits with their firmer covers. All i know is that i have no issues putting spin on the ball, and outside of not being able to put a "one-hop stop" on a short pitch with the ionomer-class balls, i like the Velocity and Truefeel. They work fine for me, and they're tough as nails.

I too really like the Velocity and Tru Feel. They fly straighter that urethane balls and for me that means a couple more hit fairways, and maybe a couple more greens in regulation as well. And that is how you shoot your best scores, by hitting the ball straighter, on all your shots, not by stopping it a few feet shorter on an approach shot into the green.

The best test!! Your test, the TGW test, (much smaller) and what I see when I hit the range of balls I like seem to all line up. I looked at the "today's golfer" guy that does a huge robot test with low/med/high swing speeds, etc., very similar to yours, but he comes up with some results that don't seem to jive. Like, hitting a Titleist wedge@74 MPH and being 22 yards off?? Additionally, some of the guys I have played with now swear the Chrome Soft X is 1/2 a club longer for them on their irons... So, I'll stick with what you guys say and what I am seeing with my own eyes!! 👍👍❤❤🤣🤣🤣🤣

Love My Golf Spy.....but. I wish golf reviews were broke down differently. Maybe it doesn't work because of who is actually watching these. I would like to see : For Low HCP player that will buy $40+ balls we recommend xxxx. For the $30-$40 range -xxxxx. For the sub-$30 range -xxxxx. Then this for Mid HCP and High HCP. Like Kirkland might be really good for my game because I can't seem to get spin no matter what. I may need an outrageous spin golf ball. I've hit a ProV1 into a green with wedge and got 0 spin really, as example

I have used both. I know the difference in this test was small but present. The one thing I would state about the yellow ball is that they use some secret sauce in the cover. Not only is it different, but I have found the durability significantly better in my real world use (both ProV1 and Pro V1x). The white ones seem to get dingy over a few holes and tend to scuff up more than the yellow. To be honest I think besides the white becoming grey, Pro V balls are the most durable of all and the yellow just takes it to the next level.

update, bought 3 doz Wilson Staff tour yellow for £76. ( on sale ). what a bargain and a great ball. Usual ball is pro v1 yellow- the Wilson is slightly firmer, not really noticeable through the bag unless you hit the pro V 1 and Wilson back to back, but felt it more with the putter. At £2 per ball versus £4 its a great winter and practice ball and I could easily game it and will if I can get the Wilson regularly at this price

Ya I’m feelin down about this. I’ve worked hard to get some 300 yrd drives. I also am a golf equipment guy. This lately has made me start to honestly feel. “ why keep trying in golf ?” I honestly will stop my golf obsession if i “ think” they’ll do this. Not good with the old guard there. I believe a lot of golf enthusiasts will find another hobby. I’m trying to be honest.

Very interesting. I am nearly your perfect low speed swing at 82-84 mph driver swing speed, 120-124 ball speed. My driver is a Maltby KE4TC Max set at 10* with the rear weight changed from 8 grams to 10 grams and a Helium Nanocore 45g R shaft set at 46.25”. I started playing this year after a 12 year layoff at age 70, so it’s been a relearning experience. I started with a Pro V1 ball, which had good launch conditions, but I needed more spin with my irons. Went to ProV1x which was better with the irons, but I wanted more spin. For kicks I tried a box of TP5x balls. That was the magic ball for me. I did have the driver at 10.5 degrees with a 12g heel weight and I had to change to the 10* and reduce the heel weight to 10*. I did pick up more spin with my 7 iron and I might have lost a couple of yards of carry, but I started holding greens better. Funny that ball doesn’t show up in any of your test results, but it seems to work for me.

Thanks for video. I switched from Calloway supersoft to Chrome soft X about 2 months ago. Instantly a much better putter/chipper like night and day better. If I was a little more consistent with driver I probably could tell if there's any difference. 90-95 mph swing speed for reference.

Another factor in people choosing balls is price. I wish you would include your purchase prices per dozen balls (of course factoring in the DTC mode of pricing). This may help a lot of golfers differentiate balls that are very similar in characteristics/performance, but at significant price point deltas. Everything is getting more expensive. If I can save $20 per dozen and not give up nearly any performance that says a lot. I can get the ball I play (Vice Pro Plus) for about $30/dz and not give up much, if any, performance from a Pro V1 which are $55/dz.

I have been playing pro v1's, tp5's, some Chrome software, srixon z stars etc. Only premium balls and of that bunch the pro v1 feels best for putting. They all stop and play wonderful around the green right? Well, tge Q star tour goes as far at minimal, goes straighter in the wind (z stars for me are best in the wind out of the premium balls) QSTAR stops as good as all of them and feels better or unnoticeable difference compared with a prov1 on approach. Putting is actually why I save $15 bucks a box on balls. I like the pro v1 as it always seems to roll to the cup and rarely short. Q star tour does the same but feels even softer off my face. I love ball compressions and every year just to see what's out there but always go back to the premiums. Not anymore as that ball putts true and feels so good around the green. I highly recommend the DIVIDE version as it's just fun to watch the ball fly and the orange/yellow are my favorite as you can spot them a mile away. I don't usually line up my put unless it's a 40 footer or practicing as you get instant feedback. Sorry to take so long to get back to you btw

Makes sense, I just use the divide cause of the way they look cool in the air. If they don't roll at as well, I believe it cause those balls do stop, which means you can get aggressive with them with confidence. Hope I get to play tomorrow

Do you guys cut all the tested balls in half after hitting them? You guys derate balls in cut ups with offset cores, but how much core offset matters to ball performance? It would be valuable to know that offset cores do family differently than centered cores, within brands, and across brands.

But they're not! Something is not right with these tests. They used a 7.5 degree head for the fast speed, 10.5 for mid, and 12 for slow!!!! Why???? Something is fishy here.
If I was a scientific paper writing on the consistency of things, I would have used the same head all though the test so there are no manipulated variables.

I don't know about the 7.5 for high . . . but I am a mid speed swinger and I use a 10.5 and my wife is a slow speed swinger and she uses a 12. That seems to be very very common. So it makes sense that they would match the degree GENERALLY with the swing speed. Again, I am with you on the 7.5 - that does seem very low and a lot of high speed swingers also use 10.5 including pros.

@@TheOtherKine Just to clarify, the most comprehensive ball performance test in the industry that assesses performance off the driver, mid-iron, and green-side wedge (along with wet/dry performance and a host of other case-specific studies) is somehow "meaningless" b/c we didn't include putter data which is largely 1) subjective and 2) a function of the putter technology in play...I'm not suggesting that putter data might/could/maybe be useful at some point, but this seems like the type of criticism that's in line with customer who won't eat a restaurant b/c they don't like napkins :)

You start by mentioning the featherie. According to several histories of golf and the golf ball, the first golf balls in the early 1400s were apparently made of solid wood, hit with wooden clubs. Both were wet, so while the leather shrank as it dried the feathers expanded, forming a hard round object. They were hard to make and very expensive. A skilled ball maker could produce no more than 4 balls a day, and one history states they might cost more than the price of a club, while others say in today's money they cost $20. They were not always perfectly round, and if they got wet they could soften and come apart. The average driving distance with a featherie by a skilled player was 180 to 200 yards. The gutta percha ball, made from the sap of the Malaysian Sapodilla tree, was invented in 1848 by Dr. Robert Adams Paterson. Golf's first professional, Allan Robertson was the premier club and ball maker in the early 1800s. In 1835 Tom Morris, later Old Tom Morris, began working with Robertson at age 14 making featheries in St. Andrew's. They split when Morris saw the gutta percha ball as the future while Robertson saw them as a threat to his business and fired Morris for playing with one. Morris then opened his own shop in Prestwick. There is a guy in Australia who still makes featheries for history buffs and those who have taken to playing golf with hickory shafts. The gutta percha ball was much cheaper to make and enabled more people to afford to play. It was found that the marks left on gutta percha balls from striking them with clubs improved their spin and control properties over new smooth balls, so makers began indenting the surface with a grid pattern. Later molds were invented to create uniform raised bumps like a raspberry, and then the convex dimple. The gutta percha ball was replaced by the rubber core ball invented In 1898 by Coburn Haskell. It had a solid or liquid filled rubber core surrounded by tightly wound rubber thread with a balata cover made from the sap of the Balata tree from Central and South America and the Caribbean.

It’s awesome that this list comes out at the end of August instead of I don’t know sometime actually useful like maybe May. Club championships are over in much of the country. The season is basically over so unless I’m stocking up on golf balls now for next year, it’s almost useless.

It's about the "lift" - firmer balls are designed to fly higher than soft balls, but with the way they tested it, they manipulated the data here, since they used a 7.5 degree head for fast, 10.5 for mid, and 12 for slow!!! It's a ridiculous list

Yes. And we see it in fittings quite frequently where golfers that thought they "didn't have enough swing speed for _________" find better total performance b/c they need the higher launch, additional spin and bump in ball speed from a higher compression "X" ball.

I wish MGS would stop saying high compression/low compression and just say firm/soft. The terms they’ve gone with are counterintuitive. High compression sounds like it would be a softer golf ball.
