- Neil Simon presents the Oscar® for Writing (Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen) for "Breaking Away" to Steve Tesich, and the Oscar® for Writing (Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium) for "Kramer vs. Kramer" to Robert Benton at the 52nd Academy Awards in 1980. Hosted by Johnny Carson.
How does Kramer vs. Kramer beat the script for Apocalypse Now? Crazy in hindsight. Milius is a genius.
For Original Screenplay the list should have been:
Breaking Away
The China Syndrome
Manhattan
...And Justice for All
Monty Python's Life of Brian
One of my favorite films of all time
C'mon Oscars, an honorary Oscar or something for John Milius. Recognise a maverick from the 1970s, like many peers at the time his contributions were so unique and vital for their maturity and no nonsense screen writing. The pictures he worked on are classics.
China Syndrome and Manhattan were great screenplays too.
Dustin Hoffman tells a story about how before Kramer was shot,
he and Robert Benton went over the screenplay page by page.
Hoffman made suggestions to the screenplay including incidents
from his own life and own divorce. (ice cream scene happened with his daughter). Benton asked him if he wanted credit for the screenplay. he said no. Hoffman would have won the Oscar for the screenplay.
Breaking Away and Kramer vs. Kramer has great screenplay.
wonderful Steve Tesich. Gone too soon.
Why not just show the film pics, instead of cutting them out?
Its a copyright issue - still images are fine but clips are out.
Not disputing Kramer Vs Kramer and Breaking Away, but I felt that Coppola atleast deserved this one atleast.(Although it deserves Best Picture too)
leave Breaking Away out of this. It got ORIGINAL it wasn't up for Adapted. That's Apocalypse Now's ballpark
Too bad they didn't show my uncle Mike Gray for writing the "China Syndrome"! My whole family was there! Too bad the Oscars went woke. Not watched in 10 years.
Cutters!
