- Robert Benton winning the Oscar® for Directing and producer Stanley R. Jaffe for Best Picture for "Kramer vs. Kramer" at the 52nd Academy Awards® in 1980. Presented by Goldie Hawn, Steven Spielberg and Charlton Heston and hosted by Johnny Carson.
apocalypse now blowed my mind...
but Kramer vs Kramer makes me cry. I love those movies.
I love Kramer vs Kramer. It's one of those movies that always makes me cry when I watch it. That said... yeah Apocalypse Now should've won this lol
i agree apocalypse now shoulda won best picture
Classic Clip of the Day: Goldie Hawn and Steven Spielberg award Best Picture to... "Kramer Vs. Kramer"!
Fantastic film that I am watching on Encore as I write this. This film wouldn't get made today because it's not animated nor does it contain one explosion.
Oscars, I noticed in the video at 1:56 seconds that Steven Spielberg is holding the statue to give to Robert Benton. Many years later when Steven Spielberg won an Oscar himself for _Schindler's List_ he says before that that he had never held an Oscar. I now have proof that this is not true!
@@MichaelComiayou know i was thinking the same thing.. :-) maybe he had thought there would be no youtube or internet media at that time. he was thinking none of those would find out he was lying.. who knows?
Oscars Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Wins Oscar From Best Production Design Best Makeup Best Sound Best Sound Effects Best Visual Effects Best Cinematographic Best Original Song Sound Mixing and Best Sound Design and Sound Editing and Best Picture
Besides the 2 Oscars won, Apocalypse Now also should have won for best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay, best supporting actor (Brando), best editting and best art direction.
People all go on and on about Apocalypse Now but at the time Kramer Vs Kramer was the frontrunner to win. Divorce was a rare theme for a mainstream movie of the 70s so it was seen as offering something new and bold and that might be one of the reasons it won. Apocalypse was a war movie released the year after Deer Hunter won
I don't think people were expecting Apocalypse Now to win, people are just saying it very clearly should have.
Plus two Coppola movies already won that decade.
People complaining about Kramer vs Kramer should understand Oscar span time is much less than 12 months. Apocalypse Now is a typical 'like a fine wine' movie, which get better with age. It got mixed reception during the release. And other major reason, you might not know, the US edited version is much shorter which IMO affected the movie overall, hence why it lost to Kramer vs Kramer (same case with Once Upon a Time in America) . The longer, more complete version is the one which won Palme d'Or in Cannes Film Festival.
I didn't even recognize Spielberg.
Until he spoke.😂
what a fantastic way to end the 70s decade, in my opinion, one of the best decades for film industry, movies like the godfather, one flew over the cuckoo's nest, jaws, the exorcist, star wars, the deer hunter, all the president's men, apocalypse now, kramer vs kramer are truly classics in any other era...
Rocky, taxi driver...
American new wave!
Kramer vs Kramer is a good movie, but Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece.
No kidding
Stanley R. Jaffee Wow! The best acceptance speech! He didn't miss a beat, and gave everyone the appreciation they deserved. Well done Mr. Jaffee!
When Jaffe was referring to the importance of the Oscars to his family, he was talking about his dad, Leo Jaffe, who was an executive at Columbia Pictures when the studio was considered a "minor" studio, The elder Jaffe was sent out by studio boss Harry Cohn to recruit Constance Bennett for a lead female role in a Frank Capra comedy. Jaffe was unable to convince Bennett to take the role and it went to Claudette Colbert instead and she won the Best Acress Oscar for the Best Picture of 1934, "It Happened One night."
Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece. C'mon! Kramer vs. Kramer is good, but we have Apocalypse Now, here.
These are the Oscars that were at thier best. So elegant, today they are all clowns.
Still can’t believe that Kramer vs Kramer beat Apocalypse Now. Apocalypse Now is one of, if not the greatest film of all time
though Apocalypse Now is a bit more of a timeless classic, Kramer vs Kramer is a worthy film.rA Director to Apocalypse and Picture to Kramer would have been a fair split. 1979 was surely one of the best years ever - those two, plus Being There, All That Jazz, Breaking Away, Manhattan, China Syndrome, Alien.
And there was also Moonraker, The Muppet Movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, 1941, and a few others that are considered classics from 1979.
Good selection of very memorable films; surprised Hal Ashby was not nominated for the subtly sublime Being There.
kramer vs kramer is an incredible film, closely masterpiece, but apocalypse now is a landmark of films!!!
Yup
Coppola looked pissed when they read Benton's name
If I went through the same hell he went through to make Apocalypse Now I'd be pissed too
I refuse to believe Apocalypse Now lost.
Yup
Great film. This came as no surprise given it has already won, Best Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actress and would win Best Picture, too. ''All that Jazz'' and ''Apocalypse Now'' are tough, worthy competition.
Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece, on par with 2001: A Space Odyssey. If the Academy had a do-over in 2017, they would give it both awards.
Yup
I just watched both today. Both are incredible. I can’t believe they lost. Visionaries lost the Oscar.
Saw both of them in IMAX theatres. Absolute masterpieces.
Even though they both would've won the Oscar for Best Picture and got more recognition, Kramer vs. Kramer and Oliver do seem like great films but not at the same mastery as 2001 and Apocalypse Now.
For me, its even better tham 2001
@@morpheussandman3984 I agree! And knowing all of the behind-the-scenes drama makes it even more impressive.
Apocalypse Now > Kramer vs Kramer
No kidding
I am 100% behind Kramer vs Kramer winning Best Picture. It really is the best of the year. But why give it the Best Directing Oscar? Kramer vs Kramer is a very simple creation compared to Apocalypse Now and Alien.
***** Maybe I wasn't entirely clear: the best film that was the hardest to make. Transformers must've been a massive pain in the ass to make, but that's not deserving. Spawn was a difficult creation too, but not worthy. Apocalypse Now is a massive creation that is also a masterpiece. Amadeus was hard as all hell, and it was more than deserving.
***** Good fucking point, bro!
That would be the case most of the times for me.
so direction should go to the easiest film to make??huh?wtf!!!
Rafael Rios
Actually read my original post: the best film that was the hardest to make.
link biff i was talking to charles.
Apocalypse Now definitely should've won both, especially considering the infamous production behind it. A movie that wins Best Picture should be the best on every aspect, from the sound editing/mixing, cinematography, acting, script and pure entertainment value. Apocalypse Now is superior to Kramer vs. Kramer on all those aspects.

Star Wars >>> Annie Hall.
Steamboat Willie.
Annie Hall > Star Wars
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@@steamboatwill3.367 I'm a huge Star Wars fan but unlike all the Shakespeare in Love type undeserving wins..... Annie Hall is a classic that still holds up. Oscars have a thing against comedies as it is
@@steamboatwill3.367 no
Annie Hall bests Star Wars
@@morpheussandman3984 ) no offense, but how many talk about that film now?
Should have been Apocaplypse Now
Should have been what it turned out to be.
Kramer vs. Kramer is not bad at all but it should have been Apocalypse Now.
If you turn Robert Benton's face upside down it would look exactly the same
There are movies I love as Oscar winners and movies I love on their own. This is one of those movies I love on their own. The real winner should have been Apocalypse Now, or Alien which wasn’t even nominated.
It's been a long time since we've had the caliber of films that we had back then.
“Apocalypse Now” was the best picture, despite my admiration for Kramer versus Kramer and Robert Benton.
I remember when he said that, and had also remembered that he had presented Oscars before that win - so I figured he had held an Oscar, too.
I also remember Patti LaBelle saying she had never been nominated for an American Music Award in her life when she won Favorite Female Soul/R&B Artist at the AMA's. But, indeed she had. Not sure why I brought that up - but they reminded me of each other. =]
apoclaypse now all life!!!!!
I honestly forgot Kramer vs Kramer exists, Since Apocalypse Now is pretty much the most popular 1979 film.
I agree Apocalypse Now should've won that year. But if we compare cinema from overseas, Nosferatu by Herzog is superior to all the american stuff that came out that year.
@@schizofrito not even close!
They really didn't mess around here, no scripted blah blah banter, just announce the nominees and the winner. That's either really boring or refreshingly direct.
As an aside, as any movie enthusiast, which movie they most remembered (if they were alive in 1979/80) has had the greatest re-watchable impact, it's gotta be Apocalypse!
I just realized, when spielberg won best director for Schindler’s list he swore that was the first time he had ever held an Oscar before even though he had friends who had won. Guess he forgot about this
What? Just because his friends won doesn’t mean he held their oscars?
Best Director: Francis Ford Coppola, for Apocalypse Now.
Best Picture: Hair (not even nominated!!)
You can tell Bob Fosse was really expecting another one!
Steven Spielberg said during his own win..for Schindler's List in 1994...that he has never held an Oscar before..but here in 1980's telecast..Spielberg is holding an Oscar..14 years prior fact..foggy memory Steven!!!
Good point. I remember that as well!
Bob Fosse hands down, and Apocalypse Now for Picture.
Steven, as a a very faint similarity of Younger Steve Jobs, May i just seeing things or does anyone else see this, too?
I love Apocalypse Now and Kramer vs. Kramer, great year.
Back when really good films were made….not just super heroes and remakes of old movies.
Kramer vs Kramer is a masterpiece, it tells about the love of parents. It is a good decision from the Academy.
Goldie looking fine in her pantsuit!!!!
all that jazz and Apocalypse now, masterpieces.
Apocalypse Now truly is one!
Carson was pure class.
Sugarland Express reunion!
Apocalypse now is a cinema class, and a remarkable film, while this Kramer vs Kramer nobody remenbers!
For real though, I forgot Kramer vs Kramer existed, 4 days ago when I went to check out which 1979 film won best picture, it was Kramer vs Kramer, I was like "WHAT!? WHAT THE FUCK!?
Are you sure nobody remembers? You don't like it, fine. But nobody remembers? The #3 best courtroom movie by AFI, and it is still part of playlist in Netflix until today.
Dilo por ti
man, what a great year for movies
What a lineup of directors! Each movie in this list is a bona fide classic!
They used to make really good movies back then
Johnny and Charlton
First class 😊
Just watched Apocalypse Now, and it is unparalleled. I loved Kramer vs Kramer, but Coppola really deserved it that year.
Even though Coppola deserved it, Robert Benton is a talent and is so *cute here*
1970's produced the most impactful music and movies of all time. The 90's were great for movies but didn't have the music.
Kramer vs Kramer is a masterpiece, but Apocalypse Now floats above all those movies.
Kramer Vs Kramer is good, but not as good as a Fckin Masterpiece like Apocalypse Now!
Wow, can't believe Apocalypse Now lost to Kramer vs Kramer. I guess the critics love sappy sad movies over flat out epics.
I'm not going to lie, 1970s is the 2nd greatest decade in Hollywood history and Apocalypse Now may be it's crowning jewel.
I mean I love One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown, The Godfather, Clockwork Orange, Star Wars etc.
But Apocalypse Now seems to be the culmination of all of them.
The Apocalypse Now version in US is an edited version. The full version is a masterpiece, but the edited one is not really good, certainly lost to Kramer vs Kramer.
Such a fantastic film. A very deserving winner :)
5:17 - What's the deal with that audible hiss when he says Avery Colman's name? Sounds like it came from one of the front rows too.
People say Apocalypse Now should've won but having watched both films only once, I remember way more about Kramer vs Kramer than I do about AN. I also think Manhattan was better than both
Nah, you don't. You remember Apocalypse now more, you prefer it, and you think it should have won.
As far as fitting in with social norms, sure, it’s still a great film though
@@JasonX2 You clearly have different opinion than GiantSandles, don't push your opinion at him.
Perfect movie with a perfect performance by Justin Henry!
Wow. I didn’t know that Coppola didn’t attend that year.
Francis Ford Coppola:
"I can't believe I flew 10000 miles for this shit!"
KRAMER VS KRAMER!?!?!?!?!?!? THIS IS WHAT WON BEST PICTURE, DIRECTOR, ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY OVER APOCALYPSE NOW!?!?!?!?!?!? WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!?!?!?! Were movies about the Vietnam war not socially acceptable at the time??? This movie is absolute garbage compared to Apocalypse Now... I've seen both, so this is at least a fair comparison. Crash isn't looking so bad now...
Crash still looks pretty bad. Considering how the Academy voted for an Vietnam related film a year before, it's disappointing to see Apocalypse Now not winning Best Picture.
I kinda agree with you on that one, Kramer vs. Kramer didn't deserve Best Picture! Apocalypse Now deserved it more since it had lots of Brutal Action and Violence compared to those other films directed by Francis Ford Coppola and of course other films about the Vietnam war. And it may have won 2 Oscars, but they could've voted better to choose Apocalypse Now rather than Kramer vs. Kramer! I mean, Platoon won Best Picture of 1986! But how come, Apocalypse Now didn't!
It recieved a score of 99 out of 100 in Rotten tomatoes while Kramer vs. Kramer recieved 88!
I must say, I'm really disappointed!
Crash is still way better than Birdman.
+Chippy Vortex Kramer vs Kramer did not deserve Best Director or Picture Oscars. Hollywood rewarded it because Divorce was something near and dear to it's heart. No one remembers this film anymore, but Apocalypse Now and All That Jazz are considered Masterpieces.
+jesusfish why in a hole
He never held an oscar for his work...there's a great difference! It was what he meant...
It's kinda funny always seeing people argue Apocalypse Now should have won, because I personal think it should have been All That Jazz for Best Picture and Fosse for Director. If Coppola had won director though I would not have been mad.
Bob Fosse for "All that Jazz".👍
Best Movie 1979 for me "All that Jazz".👏👍
Look Steven Spielberg is Holding An Oscar! And Handing To Robert Benton..In 1994 Winning Best Director for Schindler’s List..He Told The World ..that evening..That He had never ever, ever never Held an Oscar! 14 Years Before..Steven Spielberg Had a Foggy Memory! He also Held another Oscar when George Lucas and Spielberg handed Japanese Director Akira Kurosawa an Honorary Oscar in 1990 …
2:42 -- " I'm so psyched!"
Can you please tell me the song when Steven Spielberg entrance the stage?
APOCALYPSE NOW IS SUPERIOR!

lmfao the academy must regret this decision very hard Apocalypse now is considered one of the best movies of al time when kramer vs kramer got completelly forgot!not their fault though.
I think we know what he meant. Holding one as a winner, not a presenter.
Kramer vs. Kramer is a nice movie, but All That Jazz is the greatest masterpiece in american cinema
Best Picture:
Kramer vs Kramer
Apocalypse Now
All That Jazz
Normae Rae
Breaking Away
Alien
...And Justice for All
Manhattan
The China Syndrome
La Cage Aux Follies
Apocalypse now was released with an edited version in America in compare to the version which won Palm D'or at Cannes , i guess that is the reason Coppola lost both... Best picture and director.
Apocalypse Now should have won both.
Apocalypse now is one of the greatest movie ever made
Kramer vs Kramer just good movie
But i like marriage story more than that movie
Goldie's hair is on fleek! I love it!
The whole world knows Coppola is the best director just to make a great film out of arguably biggest production nightmare in movie history.
Johnny Carson was given faulty information to read in his intro. Goldie Hawn did not win an Oscar for her film debut. She had appeared two years prior to CACTUS FLOWER in a Disney feature titled THE ONE AND ONLY GENUINE ORIGINAL FAMILY BAND, starring Walter Brennan and ... Kurt Russell!
Best Director:
Bob Fosse
Francis Ford Coppola
Robert Benton
Peter Yates
Ridley Scott
angel omar soto Alien
Back when the Oscars were actually worth watching...
Even though it was far from the best film, "Kramer" is an understanding BP winner gien divorce being a hot-button issue at the time. What IS a travesty is Benton winning BD OVER Fosse and Coppola. A simply atrocious decision by the Academy.
I disagree.
I hope today's writers are watching these old clips where great films are nominated. All Hollywood makes these days are Marvel movies.
Kramerz a fu%$in masterpiece....pure character driven magic. Apocalypse = A bad LSD trip.
I thought Kramer Vs. Kramer was a great Moive. I was going to say great LIttle MOvie, but it had some Major Stars in it or least one Major Star at the time (I think Meryl Streep was just beginning her Career then) Dustin Hoffman. What I meant is that there was no Big Special Effects or Big Spectacle Scenes like the Big War Scenes in Apocalypse War. It was just a well Written, well acted Drama about real People and a Family.
I never liked Apocalypse Now although I do love all the GodFather Movie- I even like Godfather 3. I think Platoon was a much better Vietnam Movie- not being Artsy like Apocalypse Now was trying to do.
I also think Breaking Away was a Great LIttle Movie that should get more attention.
Best picture should of went to Apocalypse Now. #2 Quadrophenia (UK), #3 Manhattan, #4 Best Boy (Doc), #5 The Tin Drum (Germany).
When they were young.
dude,he was referring to holding an oscar for his own film and that 2 when he hold it,it has 2 be a win.he meant in tht sense.
Dude Over Apocalypse Now Come On!!
Que Buena Pelicula De Kramer Contra Kramer Pero Mejor Director y Mejor Pelicula
APOCALYPSE NOW - Palm D'or
All That Jazz - Palm D'or
Kramer vs Kramer - Oscar
Life !
i have seen a lot of comments arguing that Kramer vs Kramer won only because The Deer Hunter won last year, well i agree that Apocalypse Now is better than Kramer vs Kramer and should have won at least directing, but the real reason in my opinion about the winning of Kramer vs Kramer is because manage a sensible and polemic topic for that time: the divorces and its consequences, and that's why i think Kramer vs Kramer won, at the same time could be a great winner any other year, i mean it's best picture worthy
Jorge Esquivia Escobar But here’s the thing though, what’s more praised and memorable that year in regards to Oscar nominations? That’s the problem I have with the Academy they go by what appeals to them as opposed to what movie has been more memorable, more talked about and more praised each year. No wonder why the view ratings is so low each year.
@@supermariofan03 Actually, "Apocalypse Now" received mixed reviews that year, and many people were ultimately disappointed given the hype that preceded its release. I went to see it twice (with both endings) and was impressed, yet "Breaking Away" and "Norma Rae" were wonderful in their simplicity and solid storytelling. Ultimately, I think the documentary "Hearts of Darkness" is more interesting than the film it represents. Maybe we can agree it was a good year for films.
La mayoría de los comentarios lloran solo por que ganó una película sin escenas de exploraciones o accion
Didn't know the Academy just referred to it as "OSCARS" that year.
That's right, Breaking Away was nominated too!
UNFAIR!!!!
Apocalypse now was robbed
I would love to see Goldie in Steves film again...
