Hey Jello, I just wanted to say that watching the first video got me to [legally purchase a gamecube and legitamate copy of skies of arcadia legends] and play through it myself, and I'm having a great time! It's been interesting playing and wondering how you and your friends would react and play out certain scenes or the way you do boss fights ahead of time. Thanks for introducing me and others to this game! I probably wouldn't have heard of the game without these streams.
Glad you're enjoying it! If you're not there yet, when you get to the South Ocean be sure to open each turn with Delta Shield. Enemies there have instant death spells and it sucks.
Ditto. The FF7 graphics threw me for a loop, but the dialogue is amazing so far. And despite the limits of the GameCube, I feel like they shoved all they could into this game. :3
For the Piastol fight, I never had to spam Delta Shield. There is a relatively early game enemy (Azbeth in Nasr airspace) that drops Silvite Rings at a very low rate. Silvite Rings give instant death proof. My first fight in the Nasr area I got one, saw what it did, and then proceeded to grind to get a full stack of four. My team almost never went without them equipped if I knew an area had instant death enemies. The only problem is Azbeths have instant death spells too....
I remember when I was a kid I played this game, and I got to the escape sequence with Fina in Valua and thought I was so far. I must have put like 20 hours into the game and man it was such a massive, epic adventure, I had gotten SO FAR. Picked it back up 'cause of your first stream and reached that point in about 3 hours and realized that was all just the prologue. I don't think I even beat half of this game when I was a kid, and I am so excited to [own a nintendo gamecube] and [legally play through this game again as an adult]. Thank you for reminding me of this hidden gem.
So I have to say something about Fina being useless and the Chams. I played this game on the Dreamcast. Fun fact, you could do a fun little game with that creature and the memory save file. My parents, love them, but instead of buying a standard memory pack instead bought a 3rd party memory pack that doesn't have that little screen in it because it had more save files. Fun fact that little screen is supposed to beep and show cupil trying to alert you to chams. I WENT THE WHOLE GAME NOT KNOWING THAT CUPIL WAS UPGRADABLE. For me... Fina was especially useless and stuck to like the 3 chams I accidentally found.
Piastol's AI here is about my typical experience with the game. She in particular has very smart AI. There's times where she's a little more random with her special attack, but often knocking out easy targets is how it goes if she can manage it. And one down is all it takes for her to start working you over, especially later. Drachma tagging along for the whole pirate rescue and taking them to the desert does have kind of a weird vibe at first, but it all clicks in to place when you realize he's actually a softie below the gruff. Its one of those nice subtle layers of story telling that doesn't jump out at you instantly. In the first session you mentioned not liking the ship battles much, but honestly I always adored them. It was like a fun cousin of the regular battles. And the reward on some tactical thinking is nice. It's not too impressive when you're really familiar with the game, because the tactics are tied to one time events you probably remember something about or a few simple simple things in random ship battles. But the idea is solid and well enough implemented I never minded. I never thought a game could make me enjoy boat combat as a side focus, but it works!
My guess for the Doc backstory lead up is Marco. Solely because him and Maria are both Valuan with dead parents. Not a very convincing guess, but it's fine.

These and the Fire Emblem streams have unlocked a new favorite subgenre for me; I of course love the group dynamic and voice acting, the new part is being guided through a game by someone who loves and really gets that game. It feels like a fun tour of amazing mechanics and locations with incredible buddies. Delightful

I don't mind "doom" status so much, especially in a lot of tactical RPGs where you can sometimes get a victory off before it kills the character, but "instant death" always feels cheap unless it's like one of those moves that, again, in a tactical RPG that you can only do as an assassin or something like that while right next to the character.
It really is something that Drachma must just be really fucking bored. He chaperoned two teenagers for a good long while, kills two ancient weapons with them, and only when his Moby Dick appears does he bail. All for utterly no real reason, other than a harpoon canon. He doesn't even have anything to say about the Giygas, just silently throws hands. (And Vyse reminds him of his son, sure.)
I'm so sad I didn't end up playing this game when I was a kid, I feel like I missed an amazing JRPG! Definitely we should petition SEGA to remake this game
Fina is *literally* the strongest combatant at higher levels, you just need to look up a cham guide because chams are bullshit. She's not bad, she's just not good when you *first* get her, and I recommend a dodge build.
Better part of the joke, too; At some point (due to something specific happening) you actually do lose your current Swashbuckler rank which gets replaced with "Fallen Pirate"... meaning your rank temporarily GETS ERASED LET'S GOOOOOO
I love listening to them talk about persona 4 as if it were the worst ever, when I've only ever really played persona 3 where; A) Party Members can't save you from death via damage or single-target instant spells the way they can in 4 (and if your main character dies it's game over immediately), and B) You can't even directly control your party members so have fun trying to actually stun & kill all the things with instant death spells before they can cast them! Though, I will give the Persona series credit for not making instant death effects AS useless as most games. Few things aside from bosses are immune, and the chance of it working is fairly high (at minimum 25% chance with the single target and 20% with the full party ones, doubled if the enemy is weak to that type and halved if they resist it. The strongest single-target can reach 95% on non-resistant enemies, and 100% for single or full party versions on weak enemies pretty easily)

Persona 5 not having your character be able to romance one of the boys was honestly a killer for me. Like, I'm willing to put up with a lot more shit if you let me be gay in your game. It feels doubly bad when some of your straight romance options are... let's say "gross".
Where can I watch you guys' Trails series playthroughs? The playthroughs I'm currently watching do all the bonding events and read every piece of NPC dialogue, and the blatant pedophilia in Cold Steel 4 makes me not want to hear what the games' characters have to say anymore. To be fair the Let's Player I am currently watching is also made extremely uncomfortable by the pedo shit, but idk I think they're too composed and professional about it, and hearing you guys call it out in real time would be comforting to me.
Unfortunately this comes too late to help *you*, but you literally just get the points for what your weapons are set to *at the end of the battle*, so you only need to set all the weapons to the color magic you're wanting to level in the final round of a fight, and the rest of the time you can take advantage of the type advantages
Well, it seems like tried to do that a bit, but kept forgetting to change back to the wanted element for leveling before the end of the battle, so partially gave up on it.
Galcian didn't try to chase Vyse after the train got attacked because he didn't have the pronouns confirmed yet. Also, maybe because Drachma's move was too manly to disrespect. "Fina is not good the whole game if I'm being honest." Sounds like you never let her levels catch up. She has some very potent Smoves and can tank the magic spell spam of some of the harder encounters. Cupil can become godly powerful, too, with enough investment. Guess you've never bothered to get all the Chams (or at least not on the GameCube version). For the first Piastol fight, especially under-leveled, it's probably better to just hard focus on her instead of killing Death Hound first, since her HP is relatively quick to drain so long as you can keep everyone alive. If you did at least enough off-screen grinding to get some Silver the first couple spells it'd have been a different story, but without them you just have to get her down before instant death and high Smove damage get to you. Plus, if the dog is busy healing her, it's not doing its tiny poke damage to get Aika into Tempest Dance kill range. ...But, yeah, the optional bosses have much more brutal AI, so if something can go wrong it does tend to happen. Also, The Angel of Death has super high Will stat, which increases the success rate of Eterni compared to the target's magic defense. She literally takes the edgy anime character route of being too willful to fail. A Dancer that doesn't even give units an extra turn in battle? She better betray us, just so we can stop dragging this dead weight around. Heh, all these people in the comments using brackets when they talk being inspired to get legitimate copies of the game, while I'm here with the physical disk of Legends, still in case, always at arm's reach by my computer desk. Also actually played a friend's copy (or maybe it was a rental, not sure) on Dreamcast when it originally came out before getting it for myself. My only regret is paying $20 for it used on discount with some EB Games stickers stuck to it.
On the topic of instakill spells, i like them in concept, but at the same time...they are almost always done poorly. They always put you in shitty situations (like the one you were in with Piastol), and if you encounter them too early, you can't effectively deal with them. Especially in series like Persona and SMT, where if the boss just so happens to use like Mudo/Hama on your protagonist, you instantly lose. Imo i feel like instant kills, if done at all should either be scripted, or based on an avoidable factor, like another status effect that you can heal, or smth. Almost no RPGs do this.
Lots of things are similar to other things, and the concept of color/element coding your fantasy nations is a pretty vague trope. Also I HIGHLY doubt Alex Aster or whatever her name was played Skies of Arcadia. (sorry if this comes off as rude)

Seriously, Blizz is one of the best arguments in favor of _yarr_ that I've ever seen. Making legitimate copies of the game nigh unplayable by forcing an "upgrade" that forces the use of really shoddy servers just encourages the use of cracks.

I don't mind "doom" status so much, especially in a lot of tactical RPGs where you can sometimes get a victory off before it kills the character, but "instant death" always feels cheap unless it's like one of those moves that, again, in a tactical RPG that you can only do as an assassin or something like that while right next to the character.
It really is something that Drachma must just be really fucking bored.
He chaperoned two teenagers for a good long while, kills two ancient weapons with them, and only when his Moby Dick appears does he bail. All for utterly no real reason, other than a harpoon canon. He doesn't even have anything to say about the Giygas, just silently throws hands. (And Vyse reminds him of his son, sure.)

Fina is *literally* the strongest combatant at higher levels, you just need to look up a cham guide because chams are bullshit. She's not bad, she's just not good when you *first* get her, and I recommend a dodge build.

I love listening to them talk about persona 4 as if it were the worst ever, when I've only ever really played persona 3 where;
A) Party Members can't save you from death via damage or single-target instant spells the way they can in 4 (and if your main character dies it's game over immediately), and
B) You can't even directly control your party members so have fun trying to actually stun & kill all the things with instant death spells before they can cast them!
Though, I will give the Persona series credit for not making instant death effects AS useless as most games. Few things aside from bosses are immune, and the chance of it working is fairly high (at minimum 25% chance with the single target and 20% with the full party ones, doubled if the enemy is weak to that type and halved if they resist it. The strongest single-target can reach 95% on non-resistant enemies, and 100% for single or full party versions on weak enemies pretty easily)

Unfortunately this comes too late to help *you*, but you literally just get the points for what your weapons are set to *at the end of the battle*, so you only need to set all the weapons to the color magic you're wanting to level in the final round of a fight, and the rest of the time you can take advantage of the type advantages
Well, it seems like tried to do that a bit, but kept forgetting to change back to the wanted element for leveling before the end of the battle, so partially gave up on it.

"Fina is not good the whole game if I'm being honest." Sounds like you never let her levels catch up. She has some very potent Smoves and can tank the magic spell spam of some of the harder encounters. Cupil can become godly powerful, too, with enough investment. Guess you've never bothered to get all the Chams (or at least not on the GameCube version).
For the first Piastol fight, especially under-leveled, it's probably better to just hard focus on her instead of killing Death Hound first, since her HP is relatively quick to drain so long as you can keep everyone alive. If you did at least enough off-screen grinding to get some Silver the first couple spells it'd have been a different story, but without them you just have to get her down before instant death and high Smove damage get to you. Plus, if the dog is busy healing her, it's not doing its tiny poke damage to get Aika into Tempest Dance kill range. ...But, yeah, the optional bosses have much more brutal AI, so if something can go wrong it does tend to happen. Also, The Angel of Death has super high Will stat, which increases the success rate of Eterni compared to the target's magic defense. She literally takes the edgy anime character route of being too willful to fail.
A Dancer that doesn't even give units an extra turn in battle? She better betray us, just so we can stop dragging this dead weight around.
Heh, all these people in the comments using brackets when they talk being inspired to get legitimate copies of the game, while I'm here with the physical disk of Legends, still in case, always at arm's reach by my computer desk. Also actually played a friend's copy (or maybe it was a rental, not sure) on Dreamcast when it originally came out before getting it for myself. My only regret is paying $20 for it used on discount with some EB Games stickers stuck to it.
On the topic of instakill spells, i like them in concept, but at the same time...they are almost always done poorly. They always put you in shitty situations (like the one you were in with Piastol), and if you encounter them too early, you can't effectively deal with them.
Especially in series like Persona and SMT, where if the boss just so happens to use like Mudo/Hama on your protagonist, you instantly lose.
Imo i feel like instant kills, if done at all should either be scripted, or based on an avoidable factor, like another status effect that you can heal, or smth. Almost no RPGs do this.
