I'd really love a series on teaching a young horse the canter (all that includes). For the intermediate rides. A lot of people show you the first 10 rides on a colt! But you never see the inbetween rides where they aren't terrible but they learning from all the minor corrections! That would be awesome. I've have a colt that is similar and I'm probably pushing him too quick.

Great suggestion Dirk. I have quite the selection of horses here, I have one with only 5 rides, a 3 year old with 23 rides, another 3 y/o with about 45 rides, one with near 70 rides and up from there. It sounds as if your looking in the 20ish ride range with what I'm doing to set things up to help the horse?

@@_thenaturalhorseman Yes, exactly! I've a sweet colt. I started him in the fall. Before the snow came I got him riding safe. Due to the snow, we ride out for long trail rides down the gravel roads. The ground is hardening now and I can start working circles again. So he's steady and balanced. He stops, but isn't fine tuned at all, and still heavy.. I'd love to just watch some sessions of you working with one of your 3yr olds, and maybe just commentary on which hand and leg you're using. My colt learns super fast, but I think I'm a bit impatient. Slower is better and that purity of gait will get me further along in the end! I'd also love to see how you work on your stops. I find a lot of trainers are constantly focusing on a sliding stop. I don't need that, just a good solid stop! I'm not sure if you have any vids on this. I really appreciate your videos and that you're keeping it practical! I train our horses so that the men and kids on our farm can have a steady safe ride, nothing fancy, but easy to handle. Thanks again, I'm Hope (Dirk's daughter).

@@dirkkuerschnerpeasantfield8913 I'm excited to be working with you Hope, it seems as you have a thirst for knowledge, not unlike myself. I'm excited for you, it's hard to beat young talented horses. Teaching purity of gait is essential to achieving quality in everything to come, because once a horse understands that, the seek it in all maneuvers and transitions. I'll make some more videos on the canter and on the stop. You do not need a sliding stop, but yes, you do need a horse stopping nicely on the haunches and not locking up and bouncing on the forehand, for safety and for the longevity of their working life.

@@_thenaturalhorseman Sounds great. I look forward to whatever comes. It would be great if you could comment on how long certain things take to teach to a horse? Like what your schedule with that horse looks like? How many days you need to focus on a particular exercise, give or take... I have weeks here or there when I don't ride, and I think sometimes I expect too much in one session... Just like to get an idea so I can be more patient, as after all we're both God creatures and we both need to understand and become 'trained'. I'd really like to know your expectations when teaching them to slow down and stop? As I mentioned before we ride a lot in fields and of course we go for gallops here and there. Does something like that really throw a wrench in teaching them to come back to you? I want to train them so I don't have to pull on the reins, but sometimes I need to get going for a few miles. :)
