"Is this game huge?" Sort of, but also, not really. It's a niche game, and CCP knows to cater to that niche specifically. They do not attempt to broaden the appeal to a larger audience. That does mean that EVE Online will never be a World of Warcraft, but it also means that EVE is always going to be a very good, high-quality game to play if it suits your needs. You know, that opposite of "a game for everyone is a game for no one." EVE's never going to be a game for everyone, and if it tried, it'd probably crash and burn. Which CCP is exceedingly aware of, considering that they haven't attempted to change that niche DNA even once.

Regarding the playerbase: It's seasonal. Because EVE is the kind of game it is, with no alternatives existing, really, there's always a dedicated playerbase. I should note that even during the offseason, there are more than enough players to make the game feel alive. But the game *is* seasonal in the sense that the playerbase swells every autumn and ebbs every summer, by about a factor of eight. It can get ridiculously busy in winter, and deceptively calm in the summer.
We're currently *just* in the autumn upswing.

    • @sovijus
      @sovijus 6 днів тому +1

Ok i kinda feel you are exaggerating quite a bit here, player numbers never fluctuate by a factor of eight. In fact, they don't even fluctuate by a factor of two. We do have access to active player numbers since the beggining of the game back in 2003. You are right that player numbers fluctuate seasonally, but EVE has been losing players since 2012. Slowly but steadily. Concurrent player accounts online nowadays barely reach half of what they used to be in 2012-13. Even then the reality might be even worse than just the numbers would suggest, since multiboxing became so much more common these days than it used to be. I play single account and have been ever since 2007 and I feel like I am in a minority now, since it feels like everybody and their mother is multiboxing in the game when I look around.

    • @eleeyah4757
      @eleeyah4757 6 днів тому +1

@@sovijus Maybe - I've seen those swings that big more than once, though. But that might just be a coincidence between expansion releases and seasons.
And considering the number of complaints about multi-boxing, and that the multiboxers who comment on those are always the same names, I'm actually *not* sure that there are that many dedicated multiboxers. Remember that your brain's going to notice the stuff that you don't like far more acutely than the stuff that doesn't bother you. XD

why people come to eve online: because its THE MMO where players have the most agency. Where ingame player relations influence who owns what territory, where every bullet you shoot has likely been made by another player from ressources mined by yet another player. A game where scamming someone out of his in-game goods and robbing your corp are perfectly legitimate ways to play (literally as long as nothing IRL gets involved and no actual hacking happens, the devs consider it a part of gameplay), making players you can trust feel that much more special. Hell, I'd say sitting in Jita (the biggest player market in the game) and looking at the local chat for a few minutes is a great way to inoculate yourself against all types of scams, as its pretty much all one can see in here.
Its an MMO with stakes, where every time you undock comes with the risk of losing everything you just sent into space. in seconds because you werent careful enough. A game where wars have an actual impact since destroyed ships dont just respawn out of thin air, good as new like they do in other games. Its the wild west in space, and thats what makes it special.
and lastly, its a great game if you want one where you can invest a lot of your time: there is so much complexity and so many activities you can dedicate yourself too that its very possible to be a veteran of several years and yet still feel like a complete newbie.
As for the game being imperialism: kinda. The game is separated in 4 main zones: highsec, where unjustified agression is punished with death to NPC cops and where group PvE activities like the very lucrative incursions are usually run as its safer here, lowsec where territory cannot be held without CONSTANT military operations meaning people here tend to be in small scale, but highly skilled groups since they have to fight constantly to own anything, nullsec where those massive wars happen and players can make stable empires, and being where the big organizations flourish and where things are the most organized, and lastly wormhole space wich is the most dangerous space to live in as local chat will never tell you if you are safe or not, and the ways in and out of this space as well as its layout shift constantly. So its not all imperialism in space, but imperialismin space is what ends up in the news :p Nothign stops you from taking a small, slippery ship, and going on to raid the space of those big empires alone for kills if you wish so, trying to outrun the player-run response fleet and trying to avoid their intel to catch players before they can get to safety.
and yes I have been into one of these giant wars myself as both a subcapital (cruiser, the main pawn in those wars) and a capital ship (carrier) pilot, and how did it happens? You join a small highsec group as a newbie, that then gets a bit bigger and decides to move on to lowsec, and then manages to strike a deal with one of those huge alliances and ove to nullsec with you alongside them, until a big war happens and you are now part of it. You just followed mostly the same people as a group over the span of years, learnign the game and gaining assets all the while, and thats where you eventually end up, though at any point you can always decide to go do something else. For exemple in my case after the war I didnt play for a few years, and decided to put my "pet project" ship skills to use by running incursions in highsec, sellign most of my old assets like my carrier that i have no use for anymore (i would just lose it if i tried to use it alone) and using the money to buy a very powerful battleship with expensive modules for a high end PvE group activity that generates a LOT of money... so that I might one day sit in a dreadnought and throw it on a probable one-way trip into nullsec and hope I get to try and take on a small fleet on my lonesome, for no other reason that I like the idea of being a "boss fight" against other players (and as the pinnacle of me coming up with pet project ship loadouts that try to be the best solo ships possible reasonable cost be damnesd that sadly never get a good use)

I played EvE for the better part of 10 years and quit shortly after the events in this video, I was a part of the NC. Alliance on the losing side of the Battle of B-R5RB. I've played on and off since then but the hours that the game required were not possible anymore with starting college and then working after.
You mentioned at one point "how do people get into this game?" Originally, the main draw for a lot of people was the lack of other MMO options in an expanding market, in 2003 when EvE was released, Runescape, EQ, and Anarchy Online were among the big hitters. EvE's release with a good blend of Social interactions, PvE, and PvP on a global game scale brought something the other games were lacking. This paired with the sophistication, complexity, and planning behind EvE's resource and industry gathering/distribution attracted an older and (depending on your corp(guild)) many times a more mature player base who found the planning and strategy even behind afk mining and building, fun and intriguing.
These days, most players are those who continue to play from EvE’s prime time and are returning players checking out a new patch or coming back for nostalgia. I return to EvE 6-12 months and have tried a few times starting new characters to experience the game from the ground up again without friends to bankroll or spending irl money to boost skill points getting started is extremely hard. Most of the new people you meet in the various newbie, help, and recruitment chats were told about it by friends and are trying to work their way up to join them in null space but struggle, most end up dropping out after a few weeks of playing.
Another point on the player base is this is a very “alt account-required” game. With various areas, even safe zones, being dangerous due to wars and ingame character standing with police forces able to be lowered to the point of being shot in a PvP safe areas, having multiple accounts is needed. Also, once getting the the era of super capitals (Titans and Super Carriers) a character cannot leave that ship and use others without leaving it floating in space somewhere. Due to all this, it's not uncommon for a PvP-focused player to have 2-3 paid accounts minimum. There are instances of mining and industry-focused players owning whole fleets of 15+ accounts.
Anyway, good video enjoyed revisiting EvE from the perspective of someone not too familiar with it. Keep it up!

24:45 "The devs are in on it too." - Oh yeah. It's very rare, only a handful of cases during the two decades this game has been running, but there are in fact instances and drama around corrupt game masters, and in one case, even a dev, I think. Since then there's some very specific regulations for them, and they're very closely watched for corruption. Like, their accounts are under constant observation and there's background checks.

The Thing about the "Big Block" Battles is most of these groups have ship replacement programs. So it's not like your paying for all the ships you loose. you will have to buy it the first time but other then being out doing something dumb the payout usually covers the cost.

No one so far has mentioned how skill training works in Eve....it's not like levelling elsewhere. From the overview of Skill in the Eve University wiki:
Skills are a significant part of what defines a character and what they can do. If you want to fly a ship, use modules on that ship, mine, trade, and so much more, you will need to have trained specific skills for that. Additionally, training skills improve your performance (your ships will fly faster, your guns will do more damage, you will pay lower taxes, and so on). Some skills affect multiple areas of the game, but most are specialized. This has two major effects:
It does not take too much time to become proficient in one area of the game (say, flying missile frigates), as a finite number of skills improve your performance in that particular area. This also means that young characters (who have not been playing for as long) can quickly "catch up" to older characters in specific areas of the game.
Conversely, it takes much more time to become proficient in many (or even all) areas of the game; training every skill in the game to the maximum level would take around two decades of continuous training. In other words, older characters will be proficient in more areas of the game when compared with younger characters.
Fortunately, skills are cumulative, and once you have invested time (skill points) into a skill you will never lose them (unless you choose to extract them using a Skill Extractor). This means that you can continuously improve your character's proficiency in one or several areas of the game, depending on your goals. The unique skill system of EVE Online allows you to train skills in real time, even when logged off. You should always have a skill in training.
As of 10 July 2023 there were 466 different skills in EVE, with a total of 2,211x training time multiplier, and a total of 566,016,000 skill points. Every Omega.png Omega clone character can potentially learn every skill, but it would take over 23 years of skill training even with 32 points at all attributes, or 3,462 Large Skill Injectors, to achieve.

23:00 "You're just a pawn." - usually, the corps have extensive reimbursement plans. Entire divisions of producers, traders, haulers, etc., that focus on manufacturing the ships and tools everyone needs. It's paid for through taxes, mostly. Every player who makes a profit automatically pays a tax to the corp, which turns that money into more money via trading and speculation, which is then used in a variety of ways to manufacture and source stuff to blow up for every player. Managerial and administrative skill is a very, very real thing in EVE.
Often the corps will also have some kind of arbitrary currency system that determines what level of these reimbursement plans you can access. Newer players may not get to pilot the big ships until they've thoroughly proven themselves, etc.

2:47 - EVERY online is a simulated economy where economic theory is tested for the entertainment of its inhabitants including every step of the process from raw material extraction, consolidation of materials for production of goods and commodities, to their destroying firework flowers all over the skies.
12:57 - That is a screenshot of, I believe Dotlan, a website that makes a “simplified” version of the “world”(read: space) map. Think of it like the connections between zones showing how zones that are physically next to each other are connected.

Knowing the Basics about the movement mechanics and copying some build your corporation tells you to use will get you basically the whole way there. You can be meaningfully contributing in a day or two.
But if you want to get more into it, there'a basically no limit to how deep the rabbit hole goes. Every aspect lf the game can be broken down into smaller more complicated parts. and those parts can be broken down into larger, more complicated spreadsheets.

    Fast facts:
You never quit the game. You just take long breaks. The only way to win the game is to not play.
Everything bought or sold in the game is either built by the player, dropped by NPCs (generally trash items to be salvaged, sometimes not), or traded for faction standing.
If you have an interest in economics the market in game is facinating. If you want to test some theories that would get you some big time fines and even jail time metered out by the SEC, you can try them out without legal consequence, Eve is the place to do it.
Swiping to gain assets is a thing. It does however require the currency in game to be traded for that currency. If you don't have the skill to use those assets you will lose them quickly. A fool and their money are soon parted.
Gaining XP is not done through a leveling system. You get new skills over time. It takes X:XX:XX time to train a skill that you want to use. This either unlocks a ship module, a ship or increases efficiency in some aspect of the game. Some steps have been made to help speed up the process for people just entering the game.
Most of the pain from assets lost in the game comes from the time and effort to acquire things in game. $XXXX.XX is calculated by in game currency to dollars at the market exchange rate. There have to be buyers and sellers to a certain extent.
Traveling between systems is done from static locations within the system for conventional space boats. Exceptions occur with the biggest of the space boats. They have the ability to jump between unjammed systems within a set range depending on skill. Ovals and lines on the player made map denote these connections.
Super Capitols. The most expensive and powerful spaceboats with the most powerful weapons. Mostly used like a nuclear deterrent as they are that expensive and take many months of training time to sit in and use effectively. They are rarely used in situations where there is a chance of escalation.
The general ethos of the game can be summarized by the developer's song and music video Harden the Fuck Up. ua-cam.com/video/VgvM7av1o1Q/v-deo.html
The TOS is kind of loose when it comes to player behavior. RMT, hate speech and other gross general harassing behavior will get you banned. Using game breaking bugs or other hacking techniques are about the only other reasons that will get you banned. Be prepared to be a target of scams and confidence schemes.
Power blocks in the game are founded around charismatic tacticians or those that could have been politicians. There are egos all over the place.
Nowhere is safe in the game. High security systems only punish those breaking the peace. You are still vulnerable to those breaking the peace.
You will want to play with other players. Join a corporation (guild, this is a scifi dystopian setting). Doing it on your own is very difficult.
Be prepared to be vetted for approval to join. As a new account you will be treated with suspicion. You will need to provide an API key that will contain transaction history to prove you are who you are claiming to be and not affiliated with another group. This will include in game financials, 0and history of major interactions with other groups. Your history of players killed in game will be immediately scrutinized.
You will be flabbergasted by the versatility of most hulls in the game. Min/maxing is the name of the game. That is why there are spreadsheets. Theory crafting makes PoE look simple and mundane. Hell, somewhat boring. If you think GW2 is tricky, boy do I have news for you. i.imgur.com/jj16ThL.jpeg
I stopped playing the game about 10 years ago. I still keep up with events in game and watch tournaments. I am not the only unsubbed bittervet out there.

Eve is the only game that really feels more meaningful than reality ^^
It's a war of ideas, it's fun, super complicated Hardcore PvP and your biggest weapon ist not a spaceship but knowledge.
You can also learn why community and collaboration is important and it's great to hang out on discords with people from all over the world ❤

sooo let me try to explain some things about EVE to you, EVE is a sandbox , despite of the tutorial and the supposed “lore” the meat and potatoes of the game is what the PLAYERS do, and the best way to play the game is to do what you want , in EVE you are not the chosen one , you are one of many insignificant individuals trying to live in a hostile universe , in my case i was a industrialist , i build ships to make money , i don't even had ANY training in combat skills , sooo i was doing my thing , selfing noob ships to noobs and making my dirt poor life , but some friends started playing , and they (same as a lot of others do) began to train combat skills to do PVE and make isk (the money), soooooo i was like , fuuuuuu, my friends can use pew pew ships and i cant , because of that i started to train combat skills and making missions with them, we were what EVE players call carebears (people that live in high sec , the secure part of space , doing PVE , chicken out of PVP) , but one day goons started a war near HS , and since i was previously a industrialist i saw the opportunity to sell a particular popular small ship used in the war effort , so i build lots of ships and sold at a BIG premium because of the war in war systems , in my sales voyages i had the opportunity to try PVP, i dumped my stock in the war system and camped the gates , the goons had LOTS of pilots in the system so they became unafraid of attack , using this advantage , sometimes i got some kills at the gates , it was awesome , selling stuff making money , killing goons , i was hooked , pvp was the best thing to me, some time passed by , and one of my friends joined TNT (tactic narcotic team) a corp in the goons alliance , and called me to join with him , i was like noooooo man , im a lone wolf , i hate following orders , big corp life is not for me, but he insisted and i joined , them (i must say i DID A LOT OF OTHER THINGS IN EVE , this is the resume of the resume) there i was, in delve ,in null sec , im a goon , but corp life was not for me, we were obligated to participate in big fleet combats and talk on communication systems , but my CEO , a super smart player notice that despite me not being corp material i was crazy and liked solo pvp , so he let me do the F i wanted because i kinda help the alliance fighting small pirate attacks and stuff , so my life was mining gas to buy ships , using ships to do solo pvp , but one day the leader of TNT killed A BIG ship that belonged to my CEO, i was p#%%#, my corp was pi%$$#, and they left goons , i left with them, my corp was SUPER INDUSTRIAL , they made LOTS of super capitals , my old forgotten days of industrialist was not even close of them , so i said i will move to low sec and live there (low sec is middle secure place , inhabited by pirates and empire warriors ) , my empire was the amarr empire (best empire) , low sec is a chaotic place super nice for small scale PVP , piracy and semi organised pew pew , i became a decent warrior , and dedicated most of my eve carrrer doing solo PVP , i was alone , in hostile space , doing what i wanted ,login wen i wanted , in some places i was a known dude , i even killed some important big shots in my time , being a free warrior was my dream life , i managed to pay the game for years doing exclusively PVP(in eve you can pay to pay using game money) , nowadays im not playing because my 2014 27 inch big computer don't run eve anymore , im old, cant play in my new small laptop , to small, to blind , but ill be back, people don't leave eve , they just take some time off , and EVE is by far the best MMORPG EVER MADE IMO , the freedom , the stakes , the friends , the comradery is orders of magnitude bigger than other MMOs, one wise man once said "When a player quits EVE and goes to WoW, the average IQ in both games increases."

I have no Idea how this video ended up in my list I have been playing Eve for many year. I would love to see you try the game and realize that it really is the most complicated fun thing you will ever do. For a game that is more then 20 years old it is still amazing how fun it is day to day. Good luck and fly safe or don't. o7

The spreadsheets for me are a means to the actually fun thing, the small gang combat. Not as glorious as all the big battles you hear about but a lot fun still. Tried the game originally as "ooo fun space game" got killed in a wormhole system and then the person who killed me messaged me and recruited me. The rest is history.

Really cool to see you react to this video of EVE. I can imagine how confusing it is. I came from playing decades of MMORPG to EVE and it was a huge paradigm shift. This particular video shows mainly null-sec politics. But there is much more to the game; there are dozens of pathways with things to do. And yes, unlike other more traditional MMO's, you are never safe. And you can lose stuff. But unlike an MMO you don't have a single character with all your best things on it. You can have dozens of ships and pick the right one for the job. Did you know this game has an actual Monthly Economic Report? And an annual Alliance Tournament which is streamed on Twitch (October 2024 is the main event) and that there are real life meetups all over the world which are supported by CCP with devs and they are actually interested in what players have to say there.

Being good with spreadsheets ain't gonna help you in CSGO - here people can put their skillsets that otherwise wouldn't be used in gaming, into gaming - and by bringing in people who would otherwise not be playing anything else - there are levels of commitment available to the devs from some of those who play.
Eve makes Tarkov look like an arcade game in terms of hardcore and difficulty elements - and loss potential. Here the hideout can be raided and taken over by someone who can just keep you out in the cold.
Remember the Clarion Call vids from Rooks and Kings?

eve is great. i have been part of many big wars. i played from 2008 to something like 2018. a good 10 year run. i did carebear stuff, wormhole stuff, was part of these giant sov wars, and messed around in red vs blue. ive done it all. there is nothing like eve. yeah its an mmo, but its completely unique in almost every other aspect
if you want to see how epic eve can get you should watch the video Rooks and Kings: Clarion Call 3. pure cinema

sign up and play for free... the spread sheet trope is for the ship fitting minutia and the industry / market mavens. Do the tutorial and join a player corp ASAP, have a headphone & microphone to talk to your corpies. This is a very social game. The Goons are a good group despite the name. A fun bunch. I am in Initative a goon ally, but a separate group (even more now). Go fight in low sec after you get some skills beyond basic, fly frigates and destroyers (they are cheap) don't fly what you cant afford to lose. good fighting to you

    Is this game cash shop?

    • @jrdougan
      @jrdougan 6 днів тому

Indirectly, sorta, not really. You can buy the PLEX currency for cash. PLEX can be sold in-game for ISK, the main in-game currency (and vice versa). You can buy a lot of stuff in-game for ISK. PLEX can be used to buy game subscriptions, speed ups for skill training, ship cosmetics, toon cosmetics, etc.
It is not unheard of for people to pay for their sub entirely from converted ISK earned in game. I don't reccommend this to new players, it can take away from learning the game and take away the fun.
