My 2 grandkids and I spent a couple of months in Ehrenberg in a Kodiak Flex-Bow canvas tent a few years ago. It is very similar to the Springbar. We went through a couple of gnarly thunderstorms with high winds that destroyed some tents around us. That's when I realized my money was well spent because that Kodiak was bulletproof!!
I wondered about spending a considerable amount of time in a tent. If I wanted to go south for the winter and opted to stay in a resort style campground rather than a hotel or rent a stranger's house. I would have to use a very large tent because I would want the room but it's something I thought about. Would you do it again? I also would consider a Kodiak because they are considerably cheaper than Springbar. I own a Springbar but if I wanted to buy this extra-large tent, it costs over two grand.
I watched a UA-cam video about a guy from Colorado camping in a couple feet of snow in a canvas tent with a wood stove and he was warm. I think you interviewed the guy, he drives a Tacoma.
My husband and I have a canvas wall tent and awning...I think 10'x12' each. It is the best tent ever...you will never get wet from rain in a good canvas tent! EDIT: My tent doesnt have grommets either, it has loops made out of extra heavy duty canvas.😊
Canvas tents are the best! My husband/ I picked up a used canvas cook tent thru a US Forest Service auction. We used this tent for 3 summers while building our house in Alaska.
I had a springbar and it was fantastic. It was like a small studio apartment with ample room to stand, for beds, and to live. I got rid of it because I camp alone and it was just too heavy for me to move and put up on my own. I am a 5’7” older woman with average arm strength. If you are strong this is the way to go.
I am from SLC and when I was in Boy Scouts, we used these tents for all camping aside from the backpacking trips. Amazing tents, I am definitely considering one for longer term/winter camping, and for when I get a parcel of land as a home base while I build my small off grid cabin. The wood stove addition seems like a game changer as well!
Bob, get 8" lag bolts and thick fender washers to use in place of the stakes. I use a battery powered impact driver and 3/8 socket to drive the stakes in. Makes setup and tear down much easier.

Ours is an 8x10. The tent plus two tarps (one for outside and one for inside) fits into a big army duffle bag backpack thing. Plus there's a long skinny canvas bag for the poles. And we also have a canvas bag for the burly stakes and a hammer. It's a big tent! But very comfortable and easy to set up. Given what it offers us by way of space, we'll make room for it in our truck camper for longer trips. Hopefully this description helps. You might find photos of the tent bagged up on their website.
Back in 1971 my husband and I had a Coleman 10 x 12 tent that was very similar to this tent. Brings back good memories of camping in that tent with are 3 sons.
My wife and I just bought this tent because of this video. We took it out last weekend and it was awesome. We had a severe storm in the Colorado mountains with sustained 40 mph winds and heavy driving rain. No leaks and the tent was so quiet. Excellent tent. 2 huge cots 2 tables one for sitting at one with a water container. We even brought our 2 electric bikes inside overnight to protect from the storm. Takes about 20 minutes to set up and a little longer to drop and put away clean. Very easy. I bought 8” lag bolts and use my impact driver instead of stakes and it’s super easy to put up that way. I have bad arthritis in my wrists so hammering stakes isn’t fun. I bought the stove jack kit but with other hot tents I have I prefer to just use a portable diesel heater or a buddy heater while awake.
Have Canvas camp sibley 4.5 m. It’s 75 lbs but only takes 15-20 minutes to setup When my mom borrowed it she had tent on dolly would roll it dump it setup. Then when done roll up put on dolly on top. Tie it on roll over then dolly away. What ever canvas tent you look at can be heavy but solutions exist good luck and have fun
I love the tent, everything about it, especially being able to put in a stove. I dont think we have anything like that in Australia, more's the pity. I was wondering what breed of dog cody is, he looks like a kelpie or heeler mix.
We were given a vintage Springbar 8x10 tent this summer. We love it! So easy to set up and very comfortable for 2 humans plus 2 dogs. Or dog pushed through the bottom of the screen door which wasn't zipped up. He ended up tearing the bottom 8" of one side of the door. The repair was made quickly and inexpensively! I know the screens in the windows will rot out in the sun so it's recommend to try to keep them protected. Other than that, these tents will definitely last decades! We just got a truck camper and are going to keep this tent for "guests" and for extra space if we want to stay in a particular spot for more than a night or two. It's worth noting that the parents for the Springbar technology expired a few years back so there are a few other companies that make tents that have springbars. In general, I think they are a less expensive option but I can't speak to their quality, design, or customer service.
I have the 10x14 Kodiak vx deluxe canvas tent. I’ve had it for a decade it is amazing tent. No problems in 50 mph winds, rain or snow does not leak. Great for big queen size mattress, and a 6 foot foldable table with buddy heater keeps me toasty. The triangle side windows on the kodiac 10x14 deluxe vx are really huge lots of ventilation for those hot summer days, and the views are amazing, compared to springbar 10x14. It is a bargain for 699.00 as I just looked there on sale at-(competitive edge). Great tent! great price!and holds up to a great 4 season tent. It does have a huge foot print but I have always found a place to set it up. Kodiak, and spring bar are really the best for quick set up and durability. Lots of room for my husky on a long camping trip in the back country of Big Bear. Its a 5 star ⛺️
I can certainly start to the short life of a Gazelle hub-style. If used full-time, AND take care of it, it might last you 3 yrs. I never put mine away wet, swept the inside before packing-up, etc. Shade at times can be ellusive, y'all know. On the other hand, lightweight tents can "hold you over" until you can afford better (bigger vehicle, canvas, etc.).
I lived in a Kodiak Canvas 10x10 Flexbow, which is the same design, for a year as a nomad mountain man. It will hold up to desert winds if it's properly staked, but it's a miserable experience, and the wind in the desert will blow the smoke from the stove back into the tent.
I also like that it looks like the door is flat at the bottom so you don't have to step up & over to get in the door, which is really important if you or a family member is in a wheelchair. Thanks for sharing Bob n Cody!!
They actually do have a 4" flap. I think the intention is to help keep dirt out of the tent. I don't know but you might be able to make those stakes a little looser and then could roll right over the door jamb in a wheelchair. I strongly encourage a call or email to them with questions and suggestions. Their customer service is beyond excellent!
A good tent is a great tent for car or smaller SUV campers. You can sleep in the car if you have safety concerns, such as in bear country.Then you have lounging room for the day.
Tents like this can be AWESOME when in great weather or with medium to large size groups. However, keep in mind that large tents that do not offer a stove hole for a good tent stove, require greater heat production to keep its occupants warm. If you're a solo traveler or a group of 4 or less, you may be FAR BETTER OFF working with a much smaller tent, including a dome tent option... Otherwise, even low temp sleeping bags with a good pad mat not be enough....Just A Reminder & Thought to seriously consider...The Road Is Yours!! Travel Safe!!!
Does canvas breakdown slower than synthetic materials? I’m alone with my little dog and considering this lifestyle in the near future. I would think synthetic would offer more insulation but I really don’t know. Thanks for any reply.

That perimeter bottom stake anchor design is the same as on my old (1950's) "Camplete" 8×10 canvas tent. Although old, not as heavy canvas, and needs a water proof treatment after these decades. Originally had a center pole, decades ago I found an exterior frame (modified) which works fine. Need to improve/sew on better exterior loops to the poles. Does that tent come with the exterior poles for the canvas door flap/awnings? Yes Bob, a good tent is a great way to adventure. Plus, "saves" your campsite when leaving for day adventure. Easy to carry on any car, use a trailer hitch platform. Those provided tent stakes are okay. I use/prefer a style which has a "hook" down, against the ground, keeping perimeter loop from coming off in a bad wind event. I use an old Coleman catalytic heater, uses white gas, keeps it toasty, before bed, or in the AM. Not operational all night. Gets the morning tent interior about 45 degrees during snow events.
You can't go wrong with a canvas tent. I have one that's 60 years old. It's just a cheap one from Sears, but it's still in good condition. I don't know how many nylon tents I've had over the years. There's just no comparison.
I bought my winnerwell nomad medium stove from spring bar,they were good to use. I was in Canada 🇨🇦 when I ordered my winnerwell. Yes their tents are quality!!
I have looked at springbar tents for the last couple months. That does have some great ventilation with the big windows. That is a huge plus. But I think that is a little too big for one person. I’ve been looking at the classic jack 100 which is the 10 by 10. I think it would be a better fit for me personally. I also think a 10 by 10 would be a good size for 2 people. More than 2 people most of the time you’re going to be sitting outside under a shade tree or a fire pit. Great video. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the springbar tents.
When i was little my dad bought one..he was so excited..we have a farm and we put it up in the middle of our grove..had camp outs as a family in it on canvas cots. We had it just one summer..the next someone stole it..while we were at church....😢😢😢😢
Living on the road is difficult & out of a small car or sub-compact car, it's difficult to say the least. Real estate is prime when in a small car so deciding on a large vs small tent varies? You have limited room to store stuff & if you're staying at a site for less 3 days, it makes little sense to be putting up/taking down a large tent BUT if you're staying for more than 4 days, I can see the utilizing of a larger space. I'm thinking out loud from my own experience & needs. People are amazing in things they do & why they do them..... lol, I'm getting close to having to live out so I'm gathering info to incite / propel things in that direction. Yeah and it's a big step but I believe I'm in the right spot to learn what I need. peace

Hi Bob, I enjoyed your video on this tent. I believe your dog, Cody likes it as well. If I could handle the overall weight of this tent, I would consider however being one person I would have to consider a lightweight but durable fabric. I own an instant pop up tent which just last year I was in Wyoming and I went through heavy wind and rain and it held up well 👍. I was very fortunate it got very lucky a little water got inside. I totally agree that Springbar is the best canvas tent of this design/support system (the "springbar") which has been plagiarized by several companies. I also own a 10X14 Springbar, made in Salt Lake City, but the Classic Jack series is made in Asia, by a carefully selected and trained team, and using different sources for canvas. I wouldn't know if there is a difference between the two as I own only the Family Camper 7, manufactured as stated, in Salt Lake City. Have never had an issue with mine in 9 years, through some of the worst autumn New England weather. Cheers.
I've got nice truck bed tent. I've used it once. It took so long to figure it out. UA-cam help me😂. Thing about regular tent your subject to animals. Seen to many stories on animal attacks. That's why got the truck bed tent. I can stand up in it and it has rain piece for top.
Have a Canvas camp 4.5 meter Sibley tent and 3m tent. Amazing tents and my 4.5 M has stove in it. I have been in snow storm that dumped 19 inches over two days and another trip with 50+mph winds. My canvas camp tents are glorious in both situations. The venting on it saves me when in Texas during summer. Canvas camp Sibley is my goto if not backpacking (then just tarp and bivy or single wall for weight)
Wow I grew up tent camping & love this. I would sell my travel trailer & go for that if I didn’t have to work full time. I need a shower before work every day & my dogs probably would get to hot in the summertime in there.
The 10 by 14 thats made in china is 400 dollars cheaper. but it doesent have the wood stove option and the windows are a little different. And if I remember correctly the canvas is a bit thinner. But the quality is still very good. I wanted to support the american workers, but $400 dollars is a lot of money to me.

I would love to have a reliable tent, but l’ve heard that tents are not good in a windy environment. I don’t know of any places that are not windy and/or not absolutely freezing in the winter. Therefore, I am afraid to buy a tent. I don’t have the resources to buy anything that I can’t use in a windy/cold environment that will not provide a stable wind resistant environment. I’m a first time nomad and have little experience. Thank you for all the information you provide! I would have no hope otherwise. ❤😊
It reminds me a little of our old canvas tent we had when I was a kid…except our windows were nowhere near as huge. Our was only 10x10. When we were kids my three siblings and our neighbors three kids would come over for a sleep over in the summer. But this one is so much fancier. You are right about not liking a center interior pole. Our had only exterior aluminum poles. If I lived in my car, I’d get one like this. Thanks for the review

Would like to ask about your Van life 101 how to charge a third battery . I followed all the step word out very good, now is the question the third battery is a lithium Mimi battery ( really nice size) the Vehicle battery is lead acid going to a lithium battery to charge it is that wrong or do I have to put something in line to make it work. Really enjoy seeing your videos. Can't wait to get out there retired at 74YR. I with I did it sooner LOL
You get what you pay for. You only cry once with quality,,,otherwise you cry often with cheap stuff! They are worth the money and have great resale no matter how old they are. Just take care of it. It will last.

I’d never feel secure at night in a tent but to have it as a day space would be great you can be up moving around inside in all types of weather.

Resembles the old Coleman's. Me and my sister put those up all over Canada and the US in the 69s and 70s. My folks dragged us all over.

They must have been the OEM for Coleman's nearly identical tent back in the 70s-80s. That was a great tent.

A couple years ago we bought a Shelterlogic greenhouse on clearance for 50 bucks. We use it as an outdoor.kitche.

I’ve been looking at the classic jack 100 which is the 10 by 10. I think it would be a better fit for me personally. I also think a 10 by 10 would be a good size for 2 people. More than 2 people most of the time you’re going to be sitting outside under a shade tree or a fire pit. Great video. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the springbar tents.

When i was little my dad bought one..he was so excited..we have a farm and we put it up in the middle of our grove..had camp outs as a family in it on canvas cots. We had it just one summer..the next someone stole it..while we were at church....😢😢😢😢

Living on the road is difficult & out of a small car or sub-compact car, it's difficult to say the least. Real estate is prime when in
a small car so deciding on a large vs small tent varies? You have limited room to store stuff & if you're staying at a site for less
3 days, it makes little sense to be putting up/taking down a large tent BUT if you're staying for more than 4 days, I can see the
utilizing of a larger space. I'm thinking out loud from my own experience & needs. People are amazing in things they do & why
they do them..... lol, I'm getting close to having to live out so I'm gathering info to incite / propel things in that direction. Yeah
and it's a big step but I believe I'm in the right spot to learn what I need. peace
I have a cube..easy up..i was told just buy real canvas to throw over it and it will work well.

Hi Bob, I enjoyed your video on this tent. I believe your dog, Cody likes it as well. If I could handle the overall weight of this tent, I would consider however being one person I would have to consider a lightweight but durable fabric. I own an instant pop up tent which just last year I was in Wyoming and I went through heavy wind and rain and it held up well 👍. I was very fortunate it got very lucky a little water got inside. I totally agree that Springbar is the best canvas tent of this design/support system (the "springbar") which has been plagiarized by several companies. I also own a 10X14 Springbar, made in Salt Lake City, but the Classic Jack series is made in Asia, by a carefully selected and trained team, and using different sources for canvas. I wouldn't know if there is a difference between the two as I own only the Family Camper 7, manufactured as stated, in Salt Lake City. Have never had an issue with mine in 9 years, through some of the worst autumn New England weather. Cheers.

I've got nice truck bed tent. I've used it once. It took so long to figure it out. UA-cam help me😂. Thing about regular tent your subject to animals. Seen to many stories on animal attacks. That's why got the truck bed tent. I can stand up in it and it has rain piece for top.
Have a Canvas camp 4.5 meter Sibley tent and 3m tent. Amazing tents and my 4.5 M has stove in it. I have been in snow storm that dumped 19 inches over two days and another trip with 50+mph winds. My canvas camp tents are glorious in both situations. The venting on it saves me when in Texas during summer. Canvas camp Sibley is my goto if not backpacking (then just tarp and bivy or single wall for weight)

Wow I grew up tent camping & love this. I would sell my travel trailer & go for that if I didn’t have to work full time. I need a shower before work every day & my dogs probably would get to hot in the summertime in there.

The 10 by 14 thats made in china is 400 dollars cheaper. but it doesent have the wood stove option and the windows are a little different. And if I remember correctly the canvas is a bit thinner. But the quality is still very good. I wanted to support the american workers, but $400 dollars is a lot of money to me.

I would love to have a reliable tent, but l’ve heard that tents are not good in a windy environment. I don’t know of any places that are not windy and/or not absolutely freezing in the winter. Therefore, I am afraid to buy a tent. I don’t have the resources to buy anything that I can’t use in a windy/cold environment that will not provide a stable wind resistant environment. I’m a first time nomad and have little experience. Thank you for all the information you provide! I would have no hope otherwise. ❤😊
You can use this in the wind. It will still be up after the others have collapsed. Read the reviews/look for videos.
It reminds me a little of our old canvas tent we had when I was a kid…except our windows were nowhere near as huge. Our was only 10x10. When we were kids my three siblings and our neighbors three kids would come over for a sleep over in the summer. But this one is so much fancier. You are right about not liking a center interior pole. Our had only exterior aluminum poles. If I lived in my car, I’d get one like this. Thanks for the review
rock solid tent, but I'd guess some folks (me being one of them) would have trouble lifting the 50 pound tent body.

Would like to ask about your Van life 101 how to charge a third battery . I followed all the step word out very good, now is the question the third battery is a lithium Mimi battery ( really nice size) the Vehicle battery is lead acid going to a lithium battery to charge it is that wrong or do I have to put something in line to make it work. Really enjoy seeing your videos. Can't wait to get out there retired at 74YR. I with I did it sooner LOL

I wouldn't suggest getting a tent with the large windows if you plan on using it in winter.
Can one person set up that tent? How difficult is it?
One person can do it. There are plenty of videos on YT showing a solo setting up the tent. I do it at 64.

You get what you pay for. You only cry once with quality,,,otherwise you cry often with cheap stuff! They are worth the money and have great resale no matter how old they are. Just take care of it. It will last.
my family got a springbar when i couldnt even drive yet. i took my kids camping in it last weeekend and it was just as awesome as the first time. BUUUUUUT what does a guy use to clean the mildew and age off the ol gal?
Although spring bar is an excellent tent I’ve got a 10 person Kodiak I wouldn’t trade for the world both are great tents bout 3 years ago I think I paid 800 for it
