@happyhoundsdogtraining Hi, we're are in week 4 now. Today was hard bit we increased the difficulty of the walk by going on a different route. Should we be doing this on week 4 ? I.e away from neighbourhood? Are neighbourhood is very quiet. A few streets up, there's traffic, cats, dogs, people ect. Still not busy. Also I'm using a 6 foot leash still for loose lead. As she moved on to mainly loose lead in week three. We still do, out of house heel intill end of road and then loose leash. As the lead is 6 foot we do have occasions where she'll go into a garden or we have sharp turns. How do I implement loose leash over heel here ? Thankyou
I love your videos. It's great that you show untrained dogs and how to handle inevitable errors. It can be really frustrating when things don't go "the way they're supposed" in training. It's great to see examples of how to handle mistakes. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
Thank you again for the great videos!❤ Since finding your channel and using your advice, our walks have gotten so much better for both of us! She’s pretty great at responding to her name, but she’s still struggling with leaving irresistible sniffing places alone and refocusing on me. So, as always, we’ll make great use of your tips :)
I like this a lot! I need to use it for my dog. As he’s become advanced in age I’ve been guilty of slackening my sniffari “rules.” This is a great reminder of an excellent technique I should be using! Thanks!!
My non-food-motivated puppy: bet All jokes aside, I think this is a great alternative! My dog tends to not react to food if she's interested in literally anything else, even if it's in front of her nose, so we end up just kind of holding and waiting until her interest in the leaf/bird/bug wanes enough for me to recall her. It usually takes about 20 seconds before the puppy adhd kicks in and the "What's That?" meter is reset... but a win is a win.
Lol! Puppies do have notoriously short attention spans. One of my favourite moments in all my videos was when I was training Ahsoka (~ 2 month old malamute) and she just ignored me, walked off camera, and accosted my plant 😂Using really high value rewards and managing threshold helps with puppy training, but so does age haha.
@@happyhoundsdogtraining Mine's 6 months and apparently the high value treat that's enough to divert her attention hasn't been invented yet. We're trying though!
Hi, I'm currently doing the heel for 2 mins and then 'ok' que for you can go and sniff. wait 15 seconds and then que dog back into heel. I have come across two problems. First one being, when dog has been released on the 'ok' que he will go and sniff - i count for 15 seconds whilst walking and then call her back for heel. If she is sniffing something when i ask for heel she will completely ignore me. should i wait until she has stopped sniffing and then call for heel ? second one. when walking and i've said 'ok' and thrown treat to indicate you can go she will take treat and then go back into heel. This only happens when there is no grass or bushes to sniff. Thankyou
Hi! Good questions. 1) For now, yes I'd wait until she looks up from the sniff before you call her. As you work on this recall game (ua-cam.com/video/E1bY5ZeUxXQ/v-deo.html) & the later advanced leave it training you should easily be able to grab her attention from everything 🙂 2) That's not a problem! My dog often still chooses to walk in a heel even if I haven't requested it (which also means if she chooses to go sniff it's 100% ok since I haven't cued the heel). If your dog opts for walking in a heel when she's allowed to be in loose leash I simply wouldn't reward that behaviour since you haven't requested it!
@@happyhoundsdogtraining Thankyou, I'm starting to see how everything is piecing together. We took 2 weeks on week two and are now moving to week three. How do we challenge fixation on walks ? My dog will often just stop and fixate. Ears pricked, highly focused. I've just guiding her back with food but Its not always that easy. How can i tackle this one ? thankyou
@@ginahelen2 I'm impressed you took the extra time you needed 👏So many people just try to rush through and it doesn't work as well. By fixation, do you mean on other dogs & people? In later weeks you'll learn both an advanced leave it cue AND neutrality training that should both help! Watch this video if you feel working on neutrality earlier would help: ua-cam.com/video/-O1u3T3zS2M/v-deo.html
@happyhoundsdogtraining Hi, yes fixation on people, dogs, cats. She will freeze, ears pricked. Making it hard for us to continue forward. Also breaking out of heel frequently to try and sniff. Stressful first time on week three, but we managed to get back with lots of luring. I didn't give up. Just probably looked over whelmed. It tool a lot of attempts of food in nose to follow. X
@@happyhoundsdogtraining In week 3, it says to reward every check in on loose leash and heel ? should i not be rewarding all check inns at this point as appose to not feeding so she knows she can sniff. sorry for being so techniqual

Thank you so much! I think it’s really important to acknowledge that there’s ideal training, and then show the mishaps that inevitably occur too 😂

Now lets add a technique for a dog who may get frustrated and not be safe to get your hand in his face at this time.. cue my dog when I first got him
Of course there will always be exceptions to generalized online advice! I wouldn’t do this with a dog that has a history of redirecting on humans.
