I think that the explanations are very helpful to those that will and do question the tools and do not understand communication with their dogs. Great idea! Wisdom is good in all formats! 🙌

With treats, my dog has learned most of the seven common commands (sit, stay, come, down, heel, off and no). Brandon's love for all animals is baked into every chapter of the book. If you have a puppy or an older dog, i would highly recommend reading every word of this book as it will be a source of pride for you and your dog.
I have been using thisas a handy reference book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGQVgV21bQ7B9b9duQ1ByImyT9xHbjOKq . I read through the book and enjoyed the little glimpses of examples. I love that this author believes in rescue dogs. The tips and training has been invaluable and gave me moments of.... "how simple why didn't i think of it" so it's been a great tool. Thank you!

I watch 4 dog trainers on UA-cam to get a broad view and range of training techniques, philosophies and strategies...I tend to gravitate toward one or two for certain things (like behavioural training) and the others for things like tricks and tasks. This is the first video of yours that I have seen and if you stick with this (I know you have been doing them for years), your reach is going to expand beyond your wildest dreams. Your explanations and approach are spot on and very easy for ANYBODY to adopt. I just reduced my core trainer group to three...and you are one of them. Thank you and keep up the great work.
This is exactly what I did when my gsd was 4 months old. SHe was all over the path. Pulling , sniffing, barking,. Etc. This video was amazing Tom! Thanks buddy
I love the blended approach you use to your training methods you implement it’s the best of both worlds and you really are setting the dog up for success.
Fun fact, pressure and release is also how you train horses. It is easily used as a very light negative and a strong positive reenforcement. They kick at you, you make them move their feet. They stop and lick their lips and you take a step back. Never have to touch them unless they are being actively true aggressive, which is very rare.
I have risen many horses and that is actually how I transferred to working with my personal dog on leash pressure and reactivity. It didn't work at all and he pulls so hard I worry he's hurting himself, now I can use these tips and hopefully get him walking nicely!
Actually, I checked with the company that supplied my ecollar and it has to be on the throat. It didn’t work on the side and my dog didn’t come back chasing a kangaroo :(
Oh Boy gotta try this with my pulling bully...seems they are forward only and a big forward muscle on legs lol. A tank basically lol. So glad you gave the positioning of the slip, I see too many dogs choking and coughing
I’ve tried slips and my dog responds sometimes, but he’s very good at shaking it down his neck as well like the other person commented. Glad she did as I thought it was me not knowing how to use the thing and getting a bit frustrated. I think I’ll try this step backward first from the pressure to see if he improves, but have been thinking about the prong for a while now. Love these basic videos.

I was using this leash wrong and didn’t even know it. Your technique is so simple and watching the dog walk perfectly was like something out of my dreams lol. This is not how my walks look but now I know what to do to make them better! Thank you SO much!!!!!
Great video! Finally someone breaking it down in to easy to see and understand steps and reasons why. First “ no pulling” training video I feel like I learned applicable knowledge. Thank u!

Oh man I can't imagine being a dog walker with how bad most peoples dogs are in general, but specifically walking. Do you usually have to teach them how to walk correctly or do you just say screw it they're not my dog I'm not going to sp end the time to fix their walking?
Love your videos, we have a 65 pound lab/pit mix we’re trying to not pull on the lease. She is almost 4 and we have had her since she was a puppy. We have been going about it all wrong. Looking forward to using your techniques and making going out and walking fun for both of us.
This has got to be the best channel for dog training. You can really see that the trainer is skilled and has a fenomenal skill to explain his techniques. A good balanse of positive training and dealing with bigger issues. You´re helping so many people with these videos mister!! I thank you! 👏🏻
Really now???🤣 of ALL the trainers channels in the world you stood that out as "the best for dog training". I'm sorry but people are so funny sometimes 🤣🤣🤣
I'm going to have to try this with my dog since no other methods have worked.. a head collar has somewhat worked to restrict the amount of pulling she can do, but she's slowly started pulling again.
I’m so happy I found your channel. You explain things in a way that I can understand. There are certain things that I know I failed that as a dog mom with my last dog of 12 years. She passed away recently, and I’ve been putting a lot of thought into things that I will do differently with my next dog… One of them will absolutely be good leash skills, which Mabel never ever got a good at, and I knew it was my fault😂
I've watched most of your videos but still struggle with a pully GSD and I suspect it's because we've always used a flat collar. Will give this a go with a slip collar and hopefully see an improvement soon. Thanks as always for your invaluable content!
@@tomdavisofficial The difference in my GSD with a slip collar was night and day. One or two minor corrections and lots of positive praise and for the first time in a long time we had a walk with hardly any pulling! Such a simple change really transformed our walks :-)
Finally a video that advocates the use of pressure, I've met people who adopt large dogs that can't walk well on a leash and the first thing they do is stick them on a harness. Then they don't like walking the dog, so they don't do it and the dog gets pent up energy and starts displaying behavioral issues. My dad is like this with his GSP and I tell him in order to get a dog like mine you gotta work with him and don't be afraid to scold, it's like raising a kid.
So happy I found your channel. I already shared you with my dog owner friends and family. I don't have a dog yet, I want one but I want to be ready, and start out our relationship with a prepared mommy.
Thank you Tom I just got a slip leash for my gsp. Great timing! She's 3 months old. Did well with this training only problem I have is she has a bad habit of chewing/chasing the leash. That's my biggest frustration right now. Teething isn't helping hoping with enough repetition I can get that under control.
My 1 year old does the same😂 I think she thinks it's a toy, because she has a toy that looks similar. What I do is I hold the part that she is biting, (usually the closest part to her mouth) and say a firm no. Once she stops biting I mark 'yes' and reward, then continue walking. Hope this helps😊
8 month old still does this. Switched to a regular chain style leash and has helped. She still tries once in a while to chew the chain leash but quickly realizes it doesnt feel good in her mouth
thank you for this video. I've been using the leash all wrong with my puppy. He's so strong and I get scared every time we walk, because he's a puller. This has eased my mind so much! Implementing ASAP!
This video is super helpful. My german shpherd pup is very good on leash walking and never breaks a heel until there is another dog then he must stop and stand in between the new dog and me. Not aggressively just like "hey buddy this is my owner, get pets from someone else".
i have been doing it wrong all along thank you for this video, many trainers have there own ways but yours makes the most sense. i wish you were in canada.
I'm working with a huge GSD/Rottie who's a big puller. I think there is a physiological problem with her throat/neck area as even the lightest pressure causes her to gag and vomit like fingers down the throat. Having to do it on a harness. I hope she gets it before my back gives out. I'm going to try this back step thing. Thanks Tom.
We recently fostered (and then adopted) a rescue - Collie cross (crossed with a Staffordshire Bull Terrier we think). When she arrived, she was terrified of outdoor walks and traffic, and didn't know leash walking. We sorted all that, and she now walk well...gets a bit too excited at times especially when we first leave for the walk. My problem is that although her off-leash recall is generally "good", and we developed that with a praise and treat system, no amount of fuss or treats work when she sees something she is really interested in, like a squirrel. She just won't come back no matter how many times I call or whistle or how many times she sees my hand go into the treat bag. I really envy owners of well trained dogs who, when called or whistled, will stop in their tracks and return.
This I can relate to. I feel for you. I have basically given up on off leash walks. My dog is a jack Russell pug mix he loves treats and attention in the house but outside where there are new smells and other animals, he basically thinks, “Why would I only want treats or pets and praise when I can have whatever that is.”
I'm currently taking my dog to PetsMart training and my dog just doesn't want to listen because there is no consequences for misbehaving, the constant food bribe doesn't always work, your methods makes much more sense. Thanks!
Thankyou for explaining in detail-why- what- how. Cause and effect. Clear eloquence. Key. Attention to details and responses. Acknowledging results. Appropriate timely rewards. I see and understand but implementing them requires higher skills. If one cannot discipline or train their pet appropriately or successfully- seek professional help... for the dogs sake and everyone else's sakes.
Watching while you don't have a dog is dangerous! I didn't have any desire to get a dog, started watching these types of videos and brought home a puppy in June. He's awesome and these videos help me as a first time pet owner for sure.
My wife and I have an 11 week lab puppy. He LOVED walks for his first 2 weeks, but all of a sudden he absolutely REFUSES to leave our driveway, to the point where he’ll jump backwards pulling on the leash uncontrollably. I have been teaching him lessons like this video for the leash in general but I have 0 clue why he went from loving walks to refusing them. Any ideas? Is it just, “well he’s 11 weeks, it’s a small phase at that age”?? 6-7 days now we’ve tried treats, no yelling or anger just happy positive vibes about every inch he makes, tried carrying him across the road then walking, etc. and he just cries pulling backwards until we walk back home. Anyone here have ideas?
Your dog is still in the socialization phase at eleven weeks old. My thought is to do a video consultation with Thomas. Otherwise, you could try being very patient with the pup by taking him to the edge of his fear zone and putting gentle pressure on the leash. Slight, slow pressure and then stop. Repeat. See if you can picture your pup moving forward and practice.
My last GSD, I had her at 14 weeks, I never had her on anything but a flat collar, there was never any need for anything else as she was so eager to learn and please. I am certainly not against using the available tools, just saying that she was exceptional.
Okay, this was great. I rescued a dog who clearly had training. But as she's lived with us she's getting some bad habits with pulling on the leash. Nothing terrible, just sniffing and doing her own thing, she responds when I correct her 90% of the time. The 10% is like one whole walk she has decided she wants to explore and doesn't care about the leash or who else it attached to it. The prong collar seemed too aggressive for the situation, but looked like a great way to communicate with her, "Hello, I'm here." This will be the route I take to continue those good behaviors. (I found her most recent owner. It's a long story, they don't want her.)
I loved this kind of video! A second part about slip leads and properly introducing them would be great if you have more tips.i bought a slip for my dog and have been trying to train him with it, this was extremely helpful
Thanks Mate once again you nailed it! I’ve got a 6 month old Swiss white powerhouse not food motivated, but I will try the liver treats and more of me walking backwards to get him to focus on me. YES Good job buddy 🤣🇦🇺👍
The part of making sure my dog understood the leash pressure is SAVING me!! He wouldn't even back up in the house even when his entire focus was on me and the treat. It didn't even cross his mind he should have been backing up. Now he's getting the point and im getting the point he didn't even have a clue about pulling lol.
Definitely getting this leash for my new puppy. Her dad was easy for me to train, but she is extra stubborn like her mother. Thanks I think this might work.
Thanks for this. Have difficulty keeping my (GSD) close to me. She is a very willful dog and doesn't accept no although she knows what it means. Could you sometime include chewing electric cables. Cannot find a way to dissuade her apart from removing them all which isn't practical
Thank you 😊 When placing a slip leash or choke collar on a dog, stand in front of and face the dog. Hold up the slip leash or choke collar if in the correct position it will create a letter "P", slip it over the dog's head being sure that it's place correctly for what side of you the dog will be walking. I hope that this makes sense.
I'm a big fan of your channel and always learn so much from all of your videos. A lot of your subscribers have already said is that your channel is so underrated which I totally agree with... for me, your channel is the best you go into such detail and give analogies to bring your point home incredibly informative. I just have one question really what do you think of those trainers like Cesar or Victoria Stillwell and their methodology? And thanks again!
I just recently came across your channel and have already watched a lot of videos. I have a 4 year old male Doberman who is a handful. We struggle with him being possessive over food and over our home. Anytime someone comes into our house he barks/growls and jumps on them continuously even after we attempt to assure that it is ok for them to be in the house. I’m not sure what else to do to stop him and paying someone to train him is something we just can’t afford.
Doberman’s are a strong breed that require: A) A calm, firm leader that sets rules, boundaries and limitations. B) Plenty of daily exercise. A half-hour walk morning and evening may not be enough. Consider adding a doggie backpack to you walk. You can add a bottle or two of water for added weight. C. Your dog must work for everything it gets. This means food. Have you tried hand feeding your dog. Train the dog to take food and treats gently. Make your dog sit before feeding it. Make your dog sit before going out the door. D) Manage your home environment. Your dog needs to be on leash when any stranger/friends come over. Learn how to correct your dog’s behavior (See Solid K9 Training UA-cam Channel and Robert Cabral Channel in addition to Upstate Canine Academy channel). Any visitors to your house need to practice the following: No looking at your dog. No touching your dog. No eye contact. E) You must be a calm, confident leader for your dog. Your dog can sense your emotions and read your energy and body language. Good luck.
I love your videos, they are super helpful with our young dog. My dog has an aggressive problem but when older dogs are around he acts like a hole new dog and seem to make him happier. We where thinking about adopting an older dog from the shelter do you think that this is a good idea.
Bennie looks EXACTLY like my boy. Not "similar"...exactly. Just showed my wife and she freaked out. Going to try this on our next training session. Thanks!
So I tried training my Alaskan malamute not to pull with treats and to sit before we cross the road. What did she learn? She learned tpit she sits she gets treats so for a while while we were walking she just kept sitting every 5 or 6 steps 🤣🤣🤣 I mean she proved shes not stupid but also proved she only makes effort when it's convenient for her 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ FAIL
Yeah. I have husky mixes and they learn quick how to get treats and then just do those things and wait for their rewards.. 🤦♀️ too smart for their own good.
I told my family many times that my husky wasn’t stupid, he was smart, too smart for his own good and stubborn so he knew what i wanted but didn’t want to do it unless there was a reward too😁 people underestimate them
SOO What did you guys think of this type of training compared to all the behavior stuff I do? Like and comment below if you like it 👇🏻❤️

The fact that all your great content is free on UA-cam is amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I've watched most of your videos but still struggle with a pully GSD and I suspect it's because we've always used a flat collar. Will give this a go with a slip collar and hopefully see an improvement soon. Thanks as always for your invaluable content!
Yep a flat isn’t great for anything but tags
Thanks so much Bri :)
Thanks guys!
thank you for this video.
I have a 7 month old German Shepard/ Siberian husky and she pulls like CRAZY ! This is the first time I see this technique so I’ll try it out
I like this type of training. The behavioral videos are so helpful too. I learn from both ways to both understand and communicate.
I wanted to thank you for helping me save one of our rescue dogs.Your videos are wonderful+ Veri informative.Would love one of those leashes. Blaine
You really teach well and this is just more proof.
I'm currently taking my dog to PetsMart training and my dog just doesn't want to listen because there is no consequences for misbehaving,
the constant food bribe doesn't always work, your methods makes much more sense. Thanks!
My dog is part golden and that part def kicks in when I'm training him. For food, he learns so well
Loved this video. Very thorough and so clear and easy to understand.
Thank you Tom, so many dogs and peeps are going to reap the benefits of this. Great foundational stuff.
Hope so!
This is my #1 problem
Wow this was a game changer! Just tried this out! I’m getting better results than the harness!!
This guy always has drip. Always fitted 😅
👍🏻
I think I'll tune up my dogs heel today! Thanks for this video. I picked up something new :)
This is exactly what I've been looking for!! Thank you!
You’re welcome!
I was taught to make a "P" with the slip collar to put it on. Keep up the great work and stay safe.
Depends on which side they're walking. P for the left, q for the right.
Its amazing the way you work with dogs!! Im a big fan of yours!
Awesome video! Now i need to buy a no pull leash. Thanks for what u do.
Yes you do!
Why am I watching this? I don't even have a dog lol
haha! Hey thanks for watching :)
Maybe your heart is telling you to go get one!? 😀
Did you get one yet? Lol
hahaha
Watching while you don't have a dog is dangerous! I didn't have any desire to get a dog, started watching these types of videos and brought home a puppy in June. He's awesome and these videos help me as a first time pet owner for sure.
thanks for explaining the slip leash direction ...makes sense
i thought mine didnt work well cause it was just a cheap one
Thanks so much for watching!
Wow how have I never thought of that walking backwards while letting the dog follow you holy shit that’s huge brain
Awesome!
Thanks for watching
Make it seem so easy 😂.... can’t wait to head home to my pup and apply what I’ve learn
Good luck!
Thank you for explaining how to put on that leash! I have one coming to try with my crazy excited catahoula mix 🐶
I loved this kind of video! A second part about slip leads and properly introducing them would be great if you have more tips.i bought a slip for my dog and have been trying to train him with it, this was extremely helpful
Happy for you :) thanks for the feedback
I love labs/retrievers. By far the smartest and kindest ❤️🙏🏼
Fantastic!
Is it possible to have a playlist or a whole video on essential dog equipments ?
Thanks :)
Great video!! Clear and informative, and cute Benny boy ☺️
Thanks so much Jenny!
Thanks Mate once again you nailed it! I’ve got a 6 month old Swiss white powerhouse not food motivated, but I will try the liver treats and more of me walking backwards to get him to focus on me. YES Good job buddy 🤣🇦🇺👍
Thanks Paris. :)
Wow bro, thanks for coming to AZ.
Looks soo easy but hard 😫 my golden girl gets too hyper outside.
Same😩
Probably cause it doesn't get out enough
A little trick I learned is to let the dog play and run around first. Get her tired and then begin training.
@@chrispurcell191 pat yourself on the back. Thats a big part of the hustle.
Keep playing with ring or ball before the train. It very helpfully!
Another awesome and timely video!!!
Wooohooooo Florida is in da house! Morning Tom!
Good morning Kim:)
Great video ☺️I love the cooking 🧑🍳 analogy 😂😂
Thanks Lisa!! I appreciate it
Definitely getting this leash for my new puppy. Her dad was easy for me to train, but she is extra stubborn like her mother. Thanks I think this might work.
Thx for all the help
Thanks Cole! Much love!
Great info! Keep the training coming please! Love your videos!
Thanks, Joan! I appreciate it!
Thank you so much for your videos! They are all very helpful in teaching my 2 dogs.
your training of pups is so great!!
Thanks Jordan!
Buenos Dias.... excelente info... GRACIAS
:)
These are very helpful. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for this. Have difficulty keeping my (GSD) close to me.
She is a very willful dog and doesn't accept no although she knows what it means.
Could you sometime include chewing electric cables. Cannot find a way to dissuade her apart from removing them all which isn't practical
You’re welcome! :)
May I suggest search on Robert Cabral’s UA-cam channel as well as this one for videos on building a better relationship with your dog.
@@arneb3818 Thanks. Will take a look
Thanks for the video.. i was really looking for something like this... hope my laby will be a good boy and follow...
Thank you 😊
When placing a slip leash or choke collar on a dog, stand in front of and face the dog. Hold up the slip leash or choke collar if in the correct position it will create a letter "P", slip it over the dog's head being sure that it's place correctly for what side of you the dog will be walking. I hope that this makes sense.
does!
Video was super helpful. Will definitely try your recommendations and training tips with our 2 month German Shepherd 🖤
Thanks so much! :)
I’ve got 2 boxer dogs impossible to do that !!! But you are a great trainer 👍👍👍
Great video!!! I wish my dog was more food motivated though 😥
Doesn't have to be at all
Sometimes I use chicken or bacon, make sure you train when your dog is more hungry and do not over/free feed
Doberman’s are a strong breed that require:
A) A calm, firm leader that sets rules, boundaries and limitations.
Good luck.
This is incredibly helpful
I told my family many times that my husky wasn’t stupid, he was smart, too smart for his own good and stubborn so he knew what i wanted but didn’t want to do it unless there was a reward too😁 people underestimate them
@@shellsisacoolpear tell me about it they are so cunning. Mines huge yet she manages to do everything silently when shes stealing stuff
@@gabrielsnotdead6912 omg yes. 🤣 all the time.
