sorry but i dont care for the abrasive attitude towards the dog in this video. stern corrections can and do work, but i would rather put a dog in a position to succeed rather than wait for him to fail and then correct him. This is not an un-behaved dog by any means. try positive reinforcement when he does something right whether it's treats or praise. the results will be better for the dog and he will respond better to you in the long run. my dogs love and respect me. they dont fear me.
@@twoshady518 isn't great that you still have your 1st amendment rights in the US! You have every right to train the dogs that people place in Your care the way you want to. I wish you success in your endeavors. This method works for many dogs and trust me, when done correctly they will gravitate to you even more! 🙏
After watching this video twice, i tried your method step by step. I have a 2 year old female Cane Corso who i never walk outside because she is so strong and a very heavy puller. I tried your method step by step from my living room, to the door then to my deck then to the gate and then outside . I did the corrections the way you did. After 15 minutes , i had the best day walking my Cane Corso for another 40 minutes with very minimal pulling for the very fist time in 2 yrs that i have her without treats, no ecollars , but only regular collar and leash.. This is encouraging to hear, I have an 11 month old Rottweiler who doesn’t seem one bit bothered by her choker, she still takes me for a walk, coughing alone the way. Wish me look, I’m going to try this method tomorrow.
I've said this a week ago when I first tried and I will tell you again - my relationship with my dog has changed COMPLETELY. No one ever showed this method. He is a perfect dog except for being a huge pain to walk as he pulls to himself, while I pull against him. each walk ends with utter frustration on my part and confusion on his - along with pain in my limbs and small back/hip area as I try to overcorrect for the insane pulling (10 month old chunky husky). This method has changed it all in a matter of minutes. He now walks next to me, checks where I am, stops when I stop - it is almost unbelievable how quickly this method turned him from a pain to absolute pleasure to walk.
Give me luck... I too have a huge 10 month old Husky who almost snatched my hand off 😕🤭... I haven't walked him since. I would like to be able to walk him myself, soo hopefully I learn something here.
So happy to hear the extra joy you now have. I'm getting a smaller dog this time partly due to never having been able to train my standard poodle to walk calmly without pulling. In every other way, she was perfection and well trained. Hopefully this time, I can solve the pulling finally.

I was frustrated walking our two year old English lab. He pulled me around the neighborhood and did what ever he wanted. Barked at other dogs. Lunged at kids on a scooter. After watching your video I changed to your method. In stead of walking him on a tight leash, I changed to a loose leash with his normal collar with corrections. I was actually astonished how quickly it worked. The corrections quickly become infrequent. Thank you!!!

What does this guy have against dogs? Dog nazi. Loves to punk dogs. It’s like he’s disappointed that he can’t correct him. So, all you did was give him a correction? That’s it? How much do you charge for that? How do you even know he knows the commands you’re punishing him for disobeying?
I love how I did exactly this with my dog without ever knowing this technique. But I knew from horse training that "who moves who" is essential.. great stuff ♡

Same! we took our dog to a trainer and they got him walking loose in like 10 seconds but didn't do a good job training us how to have that kind of presence and timing so its taken months of my learning on my own to get my dog to only ok walking - and mostly with a prong. would love to be able to just walk him on a flat collar!
@@sarahadamsnauman442 What worked for a dog I trained was every time she pulled, I just stopped. She learned in a block not to ppull. Joel's method is better, but what I did is very simple. Each dog is different, though.
@@drewd2 Absolutely! I do the same with my dogs. The dog pulls, I stop completely. I say sit, lay down, or whatever I want them to do. Finally I say let’s go, but I don’t move. The dog shouldn’t move without me, but if they do I just pull a bit on their harness to let them know it’s not time to go. Dogs learn by repetition. If they continue to pull, I just ignore them and they stay put. I don’t do much talking, just the barely minimum necessary commands.
After about six months of struggling to get my 2 year old catahoula to stop pulling, this technique worked in literally just two days. I was skeptical at first, because he is a very high energy dog, and doesn’t ever pay attention to me when we’re outside. I nearly cried when we went on our second walk and he was absolutely perfect. 6 months of being dragged along, not listened to, and having to apologize to people because he pushed through them, resolved in just two sessions. It may seem “mean” or “cruel” to other people, but having this work for a dog that hasn’t responded to anything else- is absolutely amazing
I have a catahoula mix and had the same experience. I used his method with a head harness and it was literally corrected in less than 5 minutes. She's not perfect and we still need occasional corrections, but she's definitely not just doing her own thing anymore. I recommend this to anyone who has a dog that ignores you and drags you around.
Minor miracle thank you!!! My two rescue Labradors went from rocket-mode, with me scared to damage fingers / arms / hips with big physio bills AGAIN.... to a pleasant calm 4km hike on a game farm in just three days, with maybe 30min training before getting to the farm. On chest harnesses and chain leashes. Its a little miracle, I was about to totally give up on my dream of long walks and hiking w them. But starting INSIDE home before the front door, and correcting before going down patio stairs, and repeating entry to garden gate 3X, and correcting getting into the car AND getting out of the car too.... by the time we got to the farm they were 90% primed already. The knee flip invaluable w two EX rockets on leads. My life has changed today!
Your videos are really helping me with my two dogs! I have a stubborn Staffie and Mixed breed rescue dog. I have been using your ‘stop and pop’ technique last few days and oh my god they are different dogs! My main challenge is getting them less reactive crossing other dogs on the street. I live in the UK and we don’t have huge roads like you do 😃 so we cross on paths with very close proximity. But you’re truly a great help thanks!

My dog always pulls and tries to run and chase. I just couldn’t deal with her pulling with two babies in a stroller, she almost tipped the stroller once! So I stopped taking her with us. Watched your video and tried your method from my door to my drive way then up and down the sidewalk. Then we went on a 30 minute walk WITH my baby in the stroller and my toddler walking around her and it was the best walk I’ve ever had with the dog. Crazy, 40 minutes and it’s like a night and day difference. No treats, no tug of war, no fancy collars. THANK YOU!

So I've got to be honest, saw this and thought it was just another gimmicky video. Happy to admit I was massively wrong. Used the techniques on my 4 month old GSD, really worked well. Decided to give it a go with my 8 year old GSD/Rottie Cross, who is normally walked on a head collar, and she was almost perfect. We've always managed to her to walk well in training but never just on normal road walks. Well apparently after 8 years of trying.....she can walk like a normal dog 😂😂 so grateful for this video. The way that correction is done is so much easier. Actual life changer. I'm rambling now and I don't even care. THANK YOU 🎉
What a great lesson.....for us humans....I tried this yesterday afternoon with our 7 month old border collie, and within one block she had tuned in and had stopped pulling. Have watched this video three times now, mainly as a refresh for me. So good!
Thank you so much. Recently I've been walking my new best friend. My neighbours Rhodesian Ridgeback. Today, literally after the first 15 minutes of applying your loose leash training methods I began to see changes in her behaviour. By the end of our 1 hour walk she no longer pulls constantly on the lead. She will now walk by my side on a loose leash and already responds to a very slight tug and verbal correction if she pulls to hard.. I cannot belive how quickly she has changed. You are one of my favourite trainers. I’ve seen so many methods that are too hard (borderline abusive tbh) and too soft. You are the perfect balance. Thank you for teaching people you can be assertive without scaring and abusing the dog.
I would agree....there has to be a firmness so the dog understands the boundary being set, but i didn't really like the idea of prong / e collars after doing some research and the dog associating it negatively
@@EnigmaEcho42 With the utmost respect, if you think prong and eCollars are abusive, you have a ways to go. They are two of the most wonderful, safe, and loving tools to use in training your dogs. I encourage you to keep doing your research and keep practicing. Some day, you will LOVE the prong collars and eCollars as much as your dogs do.
@@samwdavis I think they might be okay in SOME circumstances AND under heavy supervision & guidance from balanced professionals, like if the dog was at risk for being put down for its aggression or posing difficulties that might some day endanger them, but even so I still would have to research a bit more before fully agreeing with you.
Yeah, what I've seen in this video is more the style of training I prefer. Moderately assertive. Zak George's dog training is all rewards, all smiles, and being too soft for your dog to take you seriously.
@@samwdavis I've been using a prong collar with my lab/pit mix for a couple of months. Yes, it helps control her. Three or four days ago we switched to a Gentle Leader and it's been even better - except when something startles her. Then we're lucky she doesn't break her neck . . . she goes nuts and tries to get the Gentle Leader off her head by any means. We do not walk in areas that are fraught with huge distractions, usually. But, if we're walking outside we can't avoid all distractions. I don't know what I'm going to do in the long run. Sometimes the prong collar seems like the right choice. The Gentle Leader is better at other times. She's also extremely anxious when I leave and now refuses to go into her crate - something she did happily when I first got her off the streets. As her confidence has grown, it seems as if her "I'm going to do what I want to do" gene has kicked into gear! She is not friendly to other dogs or people - not aggressive but defensive. She is quickly becoming a tough dog for me . . . and, I've had dogs all my life. She is a new challenge!
This technique works awesomely! I have a 6-year old standard poodle who is very powerful and has a tendency to pull. I use an “easy walk” harness when I walk him which offers more control than just a collar, but this technique is the best! Thanks for sharing it, Beckman! My walks with Sam are so much more enjoyable now!
Oh shit. I just tried this technique without a "no pull harness," prong collar, control leash and just used a normal collar on my boy and it WORKS!!! Thanks for this! Now i just need to consistently do this with my 2 year old from here on out! I appreciate this video!!!!
Literally one day of this and my dog is obedient, not exaggerating. I tried positive-reinforcement training for 3 months with my pup at the advice of my vet/others, and it just led to him being spoiled and not stopping his negative behaviors. Now I have an actually disciplined dog who respects me, and who I don't feel guilty for giving treats and love to when he's actually good! Thank you for this!!
I tried positive reinforcement training. Worked but only for a time. This is also me putting in the work consistently! My dad then followed other techniques and my dog showed huge improvement in a day. 😂
Oh so happy to find a review that positive reinforcement has spoiled their pup. I'm currently struggling with my 4 months pup who gives me sassy and vexed reaction when I prevent her from doing what she wants. Went pretty firm/tough on her last night (no physical punishment, of course) and I'm already seeing some improvement on her taking 'no' from me. There are so many different aspects in training a young pup, and positive reinforcement simply IS NOT ALWAYS the gold standard to correct the bad behavior.
I tried this method for 5 minutes with each of my mini Aussies separately in the backyard, then took them on a 2 mile walk around the neighborhood and it was MAGIC!!! I can't say enough. My husband was SHOCKED. I've had dogs for over 30 years and this 11 minute video changed our lives. I also watch the one about jumping and my dogs don't jump anymore after 5 minutes of training. Thank you Thank you Thank you! I will be watching MORE. OH and the other one I've tried a few times with my Bella who only comes when she knows I have a treat, I think it's called to go get them method, it's already changing the way she comes when called. You are a genius!

Im new 2 ur chanel but i really like u & ur methods of training. I used the come video 4 my 4 month old doberman & he responded very well & has remembered it today. I called him today when there was another person petting him & his attention was totally on her and i decited 2 try c if he come. I did just like u he instantly left her & came directly 2 me.

Dogs sense when the human is in control. I volunteer to train service dogs. When they walk with their fosters they can be all over. I take the leash and instant change. So that’s when I show the foster some of the techniques I’ve learned from your video and from other great trainers I follow. Keep up the great work. Train one dog at a time. Teach the humans a 1000 at a time with your videos! ❤️
And people are ok with you treating their fosters or own dogs with this? Most people I know with dogs would have better advocacy for the welfare of their animals.

I have to say a huge thank you I have been struggling for months with a large dogo argentino pulling me wherever he likes and NO amount of positive reinforcement was working and I was at my wits end as it was making every walk a nightmare for me. Today from the very start I did a few corrections and for the majority of the walk thereafter he was a different dog, stopping when I did, walking nicely beside me!! So much so I did a longer walk as I was actually enjoying it. I was all about positive reinforcement at the start of raising our pup but sometimes you just have to use whatever training works best for your dog and you🤷♀️
My 9 mo golden retriever has been driving me crazy with this-applied your method and attitude with him, and he got all the way up and down the apartment hallway without issue. I loved what you said-“this dog does whatever the hell he wants, and that stops today.” I love my dog and want him to have a great life, and I’m hoping that applying these methods will help-thanks so much!
Ok, seeing him biting you & biting & yanking the leash I said, great someone to show me how to stop the same problem I have. I have changed the collar from several different collars..even the prong. Ours is a Catahoula Leopard & this boy is WILD. He drags me all over the yard, he bites & i think he's partly scared too. Yesterday we were walking up the deck & he snapped & flew back down the steps & knocked me in the air & onto the ground. I'm 65 & he's 8mo & 60lbs. Just had him neutered & hoping it calms him some. This dog has had me in tears. We love him & will NOT give up on him. I've called 4 trainers, but no one wants to help so far. It can't be this hard. Thanks & I will keep watching. Blessings
I know It is so simple...but that "new move" just helped me figure out how to stop from getting into patterns, helps keep him paying attention to ME and makes things less predictable. Ozzy is smart he picks up on things and recognizes repetition. It is a natural thing to get into patterns, something that you have to watch out for when training, but it is so ingrained into us that is is difficult to think outside the box.
Happy I found your channel: first, thanks for making shorter vids. Between having to watch a 30 min video before then finding time to actually do the training and then hearing things like it will take two years to train a dog, I was seriously thinking of re-homing my dog. You’ve made me hopeful again that having a trained dog might actually be in my future. Thanks.

I just started training our dog with the correction for the loose leash method and he learned very quickly. My husband took the dog for his afternoon walk and he was amazed that the dog walked loose lease. He said, what a treat that was!
I have a rottweiler male he is 12 months old an so bold as you explain it I was at my wits end to the stage I purchased a e collar when I stumbled across this video an your page. Love the change the stimulus advice! That's what I discovered with my new rescue, an Australian Kelpie/Cattle Dog Mix. Tried 3 types of harnesses, a martingale collar and finally tried the gentle leader. The gentle leader worked the best. She is finally making headway on her reactivity to other dogs. Thanks!
The dog is relatively well behaved, but he is being distracted by the cameraman. A beautiful labrador. I have a labrador who is 14 years old, and she is in her last couple of days unfortunately. So sad when they get old.
I'm so glad this showed up on my feed last night! I have a newly adopted 12 month old German Shepherd who spent most of her life in a shelter and has never been trained. I broke my left shoulder last week and she's been taking advantage of the situation, plus, the folk walking her aren't listening to my instructions that she needs to be steady and in a sit position before her walking collar is put on - they just want to get the collar on her as quickly as possible. This morning she was just doing what she wanted so I put her leash on her regular tag collar and started walking her around the house. It's amazing and I never thought it possible! Even with the broken shoulder I might be able to start walking her myself outside. Plus, right now I have a calm obedient dog rather than one who ignores me. Thank you so much for helping me get control back in my house without me losing my cool.
This dog is extremely easy compared to my working GSD. Hes also 11ish months and his brain is all over the place. However step by step we make progress. After a few corrections after "leaving me" he automatically offers a heel, that he has been tought, to me without me saying anything. I find it acceptable even though I havent asked for it - as long as he is "with me", its good.
Yes. I have a female Great Pyrenees who is extremely playful. She is very reactive and often times becomes fixated on movement of other things around her. After about 2 weeks of just some simple 2 hour sessions she is starting to become the dog I want her to be. I'm very glad I got her in my life.
This dog is a JOKE. Doesn't even pull!!!!!! My dog has his head to the ground and is following every friggin scent and will pull until he can't breathe and keep pulling
Thank you for this video. I have been working with my Black Lab (field lab) for months now almost daily, to try and train her to loose leash walk. Watched many other trainer and tried there approach with only minimal success. Try your method from this video and WOW. I was able to actually walk outside the fenced yard first try with your method. Perfectly no, but so much better and getting better every time. My husband can now walk her, training him to use this method. Watching more of your videos. Thank you
Two more of your good and useful methods, thank you so much. I think that 'stepping into the dog' with that right leg will help us a lot; as will changing the collar now an then -- mix things up a bit which should help to keep my 13-month Lab-Shep aware of the fact, and attentive to the fact, that she is on a leash.
This method really works. I adopted a BIG super strong greyhound, that had developed poor leash manners. He had two previous adoptions before us. But he was super adorable and smart. So I did this type of method, just stopping when he tried to be a Tractor! Got back his attention- with Stop, walk and Ok . And hand gestures to accompany the word. Same with going out the door. No walking straight out until I say OK. This was tested a couple of time when the door accidently didn't latch, and I came home after some shopping with him sitting behind the open door, waiting for me to return!😊

It’s so refreshing to finally see a dog Trainer who doesn’t relie on bs aversive tools and actually takes the time to get into the psyche of the dog and has Amazing results! Hi there. I watch all your videos. Love your work. I have a West Highland Terrier. Ellie. Rescued at 6. Spent her life in a small backyard and never had interaction with other dogs or humans we were told. Owner would walk at 4am and jog before work. After 12 months we are no further advanced with her lead training.Ellie pulls, lunges and barks on the lead. She is 6 kgs. She had shock collar history plus variety of collars including chockers. Have tried Gentle Leader which did not work, she would spin around. We are now trying a dual clip and lead harness combination. Ellie gets very excited and somewhat aggressive at times on lead, especially any dogs comes too close. Ellie has a " boundary issue" we think. Her body language really changes when she sees another dog. We send regularly her to farmstay to learn how to be a dog and mix with lots of dogs, big and small. She is a different dog, she loves it. No aggression!! I am too frightened to let her off lead on beach with other dogs. We do not want vet bills!. I sent her for training and it did not work. There was no interaction with other dogs during the training. Trainer did not see her normal behaviour. She got her to do short loose lead walking in a pristine environment! When I took over following her instructions Ellie was good in our backyard and home but then back to her old ways in our environment, a busy dog beach!! Dog distraction!!! She is good at the usual sit, stay, come,training plus playing with her toys. We now go for walks when the beach is quiet. We cannot socialise with our dog friends.Vet recommended calming medication. Ellie is a great dog and she has settled in well in new home, very affectionate, we love her. I watch all your videos, have spent a fortune on socialisation farmstay and training. Will do anything for her second chance. I agree with your comment owner should send video of dog behaviour so we can see before and after. I will not give up. Wish I could bring her to you but you are a world away. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks for all you do to help us dog lovers. Jennifer and Ellie.
Hi Joel, many times dog’s behaviors are the results of the owner’s behavior. Many owners don’t believe that dogs feel the energy of the owner through the leash. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to Joel - I've used his methods on my 6 month old labradoodle and he's now a loose leash puppy almost 100% of time. Not perfect yet but he's only 6 months old so I'm not expecting much of him. I've only used Joel's methods gently - never any treats, prongs, Ecollar, hard popping or harsh words :)

OMGOSH...!!! You're so SPOT ON.. I've become more confident with myself in so many ways... I'm a soft spoken person and in the past I've let mean, rude people (mainly women) run me over to avoid conflict... Not anymore... I'M OVER IT...!! I set my boundaries and now people at work treat me with respect... I'm still soft spoken, kind and respectful, but I've learned to be firm when need be... I have watched videos after videos on how to stop my 2-year old Golden Retriever to stop pulling and lunging. I am 68 years old with spinal stenosis and arthritis on both knees so it's very hard to walk a pulling dog. When I saw your video, I was very skeptical and even said, "No way this is going to work". But when you said you will have your dog for 12 years and you can't have the patience to do 15 stops, that convinced me to give it a try. I was so very pleasantly surprised. It did work! Even before 15 stops, he wasn't pulling anymore. We even went for a longer walk because my back and knees were not hurting. I can't thank you enough for teaching me how to train my dog. Now if you would kindly send me a link to a video that will teach my dog not to jump up on people, I would greatly appreciate it.
I can’t even get my dog to stop bouncing around without the gentle leader. He is 14 month old golden doodle. Calm everywhere in house until someone comes over or we go outside.
I just saw this video and am taking my six-month old Golden Retriever Molly for a walk. I'll let you know if it works . Fingers crossed. ---- I just got back from the walk - Changing the leash from the back of the harness to the front made all the difference. Although I have to admit she is an excellent dog and listens very well. The gentle tug from the front made her take notice and she responded after a few tugs. Revisiting this video as I’ve been studying to have a well behaved, happy and trained pup. I have 2 Great Dane pups and we took Cersei for her first walk around the whole neighborhood and it was an amazing walk having these methods in case I needed them. Kinda froze up and didn’t know what to do when neighbor dogs were out in their front yards barking at her through the gate she was so frightened I didn’t know what to do except tell her to ignore them and kept walking. She does run right out of the door though so we need some practice there…
I have a 4 y.o. German/Aussie shepherd. I got her at 9 mo old. She is a Very friendly, outgoing, curious, alert girl, and protective of me when needed. Previous owner was a large, strong man who used a claw collar AND a halty with her. I said I would not need them when I brought her home, as I hate "gimmicky" things, and prefer working with their minds. Being a farm dog she wasn't walked on a leash much. Now we are in an urban setting. It has taken me at least 3 months to figure out something close to working with her. I'm 5'1", 140 lb, she's 75 lb. She would pull me along when walking, ignoring me mostly, and when saw other dogs/people, would run to jump excitedly on them for attention, pulling me into a large tree at one point, but better than down to the pavement! I started using a somewhat similar method as yours, and saw some success, but I wasn't quite "trained" yet. Though I was using a method close to yours, I was too tense, had the leash too short, and would over correct. I found this video of yours yesterday, and tried out your method/style just 10 minutes ago. I loosed the lead, let her "walk out", gave a quick correct, walked to her, and we continued on. Repeated this about 8 times with her. I saw IMMEDIATE improvement in her walk, paying attention to me, enjoying the walk, and we even had a dog interrupt, and she immediately came back to listening to me mode!!! It took about 8 corrections, and we have already established a much more wonderful walk. I realize this is not a "got it perfect for forever" deal. Yet, as I continue to teach "US", I look forward to much better communication with her, and many happy (and safer) walks with as a result of these small but vital changes. This is excellent! Especially with a more mature(ish) dog, and no prong or e collars (I refuse to use those). We didn't address proper walking etiquette with our dog when we got him, so now we're trying to correct and this looks extremely practicable.
This video changed my lab's life. It took one walk to go to loose leash from being dragged all over the place. Now, all it takes is very occasional corrections when he checks out if really excited. This is the single most important dog training video I've come across.
After watching a few of your videos I did decide to subscribe. I have been trying to acclimate a new friend I adopted a couple of weeks ago. His name is Tipper and has LOT of issues. While most of the time he is attentive on leaf & has already learned to stop, turn, & mostly heel, we are still working on him getting out in front. I know early training will be an essential part of him gaining confidence not only in himself but also in me. I saw this last night and used this technique on our walk today. I did not need to use such an exaggerated movement as he is EXTREMELY shy, fearful, & sensitive but it worked well and helped to get us back on course !! Thanks !!
You are so inspiring, thank you for all the free content. I am currently working with my leash reactive dog and getting better. Any suggestions for when off leash dogs approach us and my dog is freaking out? Happened to us yesterday, the other owner wasn’t around at first to recall his dogs. My dog completely freaked out. They were smelling him but wouldn’t leave. I was able to get his head away from the other dogs so no bites happened. But I was scared!
Love this video, it really hits home because I go back and forth with my dog from gentle leader to regular collar to keep him on his toes and his walks just get better and better. I'm still not good enough to get all the check ins with my dog though so I know I have to put more effort into that and I will be trying that new move!
I've been struggling for five years with my female GS, she's very intelligent, she knows tricks and complex commands, but for some reason, she never learned how to go for a walk properly. I've tried EVERYTHING, and nothing worked so I opted for hiking activities and free roam training on open wide areas. I just found this video at 1am and by 1:30am she walked like the most calm dog in the world by my side. AMAZING 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This worked like a charm! Our intact male lab is 15 months old and was pulling more and more (going for that irresistible scent of god knows what). Did this about 3 or 4 times per walk during a 2 walks and no more pulling (and, btw, we use a harness, no collar). Have to repeat it once every now and then but that's it. Best advice ever!
The dog is anxious and confused (note: lip licking every time you stop and pull the lead). You have exchanged a prong collar for sharp pulls on the neck, not that much difference between the two. Anyone watching - these techniques will likely create long-term problems for your dog.
Exactly! I can't believe what bullshit this guy is spouting. The body language of this dog is clearly scared and nervous. He ducks away the moment there is pressure on the leash, that is not a trained dog! That's a repressed dog! For fucks sake, and so many people think this guy is a great teacher when he completely ignores this dogs body language. "Ohh he does what he want, that's his attitude" no, that's not how dog brains work. This dog has just never been shown how they wanted him to behave and reinforce that, they just immediately ran to punish. Very disappointing.
Beckman you saved our life, I moved from a farm to the middle of Amsterdam with two sisters old English bulldogs at 1.5 years old 35 kilos each ( i weigh 50 kilos) They broke my wrist busted my hip dragged me over the concrete with concussion and black eyes 3 months on walking them 8x a day seperatly we progressed to loose leash walking together. The door method literally saved our lives We still have so much to learn but I finally feel confident to take my girls to the forest and come back in one piece THANK YOU!

WOW!!!!! AWESOME video. We just lost our full size Golden Doodle resuce to cancer just shy of her 8th birthday. I am looking for a big female rescue now. I KNOW this info will be priceless.
B.S. This dog is already trained. He never pulled on the leash. I have a border collie. She pulls me constantly. Tried collar, choker, harness, martingale, nothing works. She's my 7th dog. None of the others behaved this way. She's perfect in the house. Knows all her commands on hand signals. But take her outside and she changes to a monster.
This has been a huge game changer for me and can't thank you enough. After the first 5 minutes of this method its like I have a new dog. My 2 year old is extremely pray motivated (wirehaired pointing griffon). On walks he is always leading and is distracted at anything with a pulse. After one session he's walking beside me and I'm not even holding the leash. The only difference is that I used a slip leash rather than a standard collar with a leash. He was used to pulling with a regular collar and a prong collar. The slip leash is great since it rides a bit lower on the neck so when you pull the dog turns around easily. I barely have to pull and its effective. The snowflakes in the comments must all have dogs that run their household. Not once does the dog whelp in this video. I've seem much harsher methods. Thank you for everything you do. This has really helped but on my walk today, where I stopped and pulled back probably 50 times (because you said we won't do it :) ) I had these two thoughts. My dog is a 30kg American Staffy and she has a high prey drive. We walk where there are a lot of rabbits and they often scamper across our path. She was on a halter, so I looked into something better and settled on a half choke collar which is soft, and a zero shock 1.2 m leash to save my shoulders. How to stop a high prey drive dog as leave it does not always suffice. Is the leash too short and the wrong leash? Should I get a gentle leader? Thank you once again for all your work. It seems you the only one out there that makes sense to me.
Work on teaching your dog to “look” at you in the home without distractions. Once you get that, move to outside on the leash without distractions. It will take time but as that progresses you can start to do it when distractions are present and eventually it will work. Tools like leashes and collars are just that, tools to help with training. It’s up to you to teach the desired behaviours while remembering that inside the home you’re a lot more interesting to a dog than outside. You have to work to make your dog see you as the most interesting thing in all situations. Hope that helps!
I’ve been watching several videos on how to get your dog to stop pulling. Many of them use pinch/prong collars, and one even insisted that you have to correct so hard that the dog yelps, which I absolutely refuse to do to my dog. You’ve given me hope to get my dog trained successfully without hurting my dog.
I find the hardest part is re-conditioning my 10 mo old Malinois to me. If I have someone who walks her who has never walked her before, she is perfectly behaved after a few corrections. I myself need to do 10+, and then continuously correct every block. Not sure why she is so loose with me. Granted, I've had her for only a month after I picked her up from a shelter (where she was found as a stray). Edit: my neighborhood is very condensed with about 20 other dogs and 100 squirrels, so she has way too many distractions. I think a new person is just so much of a distraction it outweighs the others.
quite literally after 5 minutes of using this technique my collie was 90% better, very few corrections needed, and he was just as good starting out the next day. Simply amazing.

sorry but i dont care for the abrasive attitude towards the dog in this video. stern corrections can and do work, but i would rather put a dog in a position to succeed rather than wait for him to fail and then correct him. This is not an un-behaved dog by any means. try positive reinforcement when he does something right whether it's treats or praise. the results will be better for the dog and he will respond better to you in the long run. my dogs love and respect me. they dont fear me.

I wish you success in your endeavors. This method works for many dogs and trust me, when done correctly they will gravitate to you even more! 🙏
After watching this video twice, i tried your method step by step. I have a 2 year old female Cane Corso who i never walk outside because she is so strong and a very heavy puller. I tried your method step by step from my living room, to the door then to my deck then to the gate and then outside . I did the corrections the way you did. After 15 minutes , i had the best day walking my Cane Corso for another 40 minutes with very minimal pulling for the very fist time in 2 yrs that i have her without treats, no ecollars , but only regular collar and leash.. This is encouraging to hear, I have an 11 month old Rottweiler who doesn’t seem one bit bothered by her choker, she still takes me for a walk, coughing alone the way. Wish me look, I’m going to try this method tomorrow.
I've said this a week ago when I first tried and I will tell you again - my relationship with my dog has changed COMPLETELY. No one ever showed this method. He is a perfect dog except for being a huge pain to walk as he pulls to himself, while I pull against him. each walk ends with utter frustration on my part and confusion on his - along with pain in my limbs and small back/hip area as I try to overcorrect for the insane pulling (10 month old chunky husky). This method has changed it all in a matter of minutes. He now walks next to me, checks where I am, stops when I stop - it is almost unbelievable how quickly this method turned him from a pain to absolute pleasure to walk.

I was frustrated walking our two year old English lab. He pulled me around the neighborhood and did what ever he wanted. Barked at other dogs. Lunged at kids on a scooter. After watching your video I changed to your method. In stead of walking him on a tight leash, I changed to a loose leash with his normal collar with corrections. I was actually astonished how quickly it worked. The corrections quickly become infrequent. Thank you!!!

Same! we took our dog to a trainer and they got him walking loose in like 10 seconds but didn't do a good job training us how to have that kind of presence and timing so its taken months of my learning on my own to get my dog to only ok walking - and mostly with a prong. would love to be able to just walk him on a flat collar!
@@sarahadamsnauman442 What worked for a dog I trained was every time she pulled, I just stopped. She learned in a block not to ppull. Joel's method is better, but what I did is very simple. Each dog is different, though.
@@drewd2 Absolutely! I do the same with my dogs. The dog pulls, I stop completely. I say sit, lay down, or whatever I want them to do. Finally I say let’s go, but I don’t move. The dog shouldn’t move without me, but if they do I just pull a bit on their harness to let them know it’s not time to go. Dogs learn by repetition. If they continue to pull, I just ignore them and they stay put. I don’t do much talking, just the barely minimum necessary commands.

After about six months of struggling to get my 2 year old catahoula to stop pulling, this technique worked in literally just two days.
I was skeptical at first, because he is a very high energy dog, and doesn’t ever pay attention to me when we’re outside. I nearly cried when we went on our second walk and he was absolutely perfect. 6 months of being dragged along, not listened to, and having to apologize to people because he pushed through them, resolved in just two sessions.
It may seem “mean” or “cruel” to other people, but having this work for a dog that hasn’t responded to anything else- is absolutely amazing
I have a catahoula mix and had the same experience. I used his method with a head harness and it was literally corrected in less than 5 minutes. She's not perfect and we still need occasional corrections, but she's definitely not just doing her own thing anymore. I recommend this to anyone who has a dog that ignores you and drags you around.

Minor miracle thank you!!! My two rescue Labradors went from rocket-mode, with me scared to damage fingers / arms / hips with big physio bills AGAIN.... to a pleasant calm 4km hike on a game farm in just three days, with maybe 30min training before getting to the farm.
On chest harnesses and chain leashes. Its a little miracle, I was about to totally give up on my dream of long walks and hiking w them.
But starting INSIDE home before the front door, and correcting before going down patio stairs, and repeating entry to garden gate 3X, and correcting getting into the car AND getting out of the car too.... by the time we got to the farm they were 90% primed already. The knee flip invaluable w two EX rockets on leads.

Your videos are really helping me with my two dogs! I have a stubborn Staffie and Mixed breed rescue dog. I have been using your ‘stop and pop’ technique last few days and oh my god they are different dogs! My main challenge is getting them less reactive crossing other dogs on the street. I live in the UK and we don’t have huge roads like you do 😃 so we cross on paths with very close proximity. But you’re truly a great help thanks!

My dog always pulls and tries to run and chase. I just couldn’t deal with her pulling with two babies in a stroller, she almost tipped the stroller once! So I stopped taking her with us. Watched your video and tried your method from my door to my drive way then up and down the sidewalk. Then we went on a 30 minute walk WITH my baby in the stroller and my toddler walking around her and it was the best walk I’ve ever had with the dog. Crazy, 40 minutes and it’s like a night and day difference. No treats, no tug of war, no fancy collars. THANK YOU!

So I've got to be honest, saw this and thought it was just another gimmicky video. Happy to admit I was massively wrong. Used the techniques on my 4 month old GSD, really worked well. Decided to give it a go with my 8 year old GSD/Rottie Cross, who is normally walked on a head collar, and she was almost perfect. We've always managed to her to walk well in training but never just on normal road walks. Well apparently after 8 years of trying.....she can walk like a normal dog 😂😂 so grateful for this video. The way that correction is done is so much easier. Actual life changer. I'm rambling now and I don't even care. THANK YOU 🎉
What a great lesson.....for us humans....I tried this yesterday afternoon with our 7 month old border collie, and within one block she had tuned in and had stopped pulling. Have watched this video three times now, mainly as a refresh for me. So good!
Thank you so much. Recently I've been walking my new best friend. My neighbours Rhodesian Ridgeback. Today, literally after the first 15 minutes of applying your loose leash training methods I began to see changes in her behaviour. By the end of our 1 hour walk she no longer pulls constantly on the lead. She will now walk by my side on a loose leash and already responds to a very slight tug and verbal correction if she pulls to hard..

You are one of my favourite trainers. I’ve seen so many methods that are too hard (borderline abusive tbh) and too soft. You are the perfect balance. Thank you for teaching people you can be assertive without scaring and abusing the dog.
I would agree....there has to be a firmness so the dog understands the boundary being set, but i didn't really like the idea of prong / e collars after doing some research and the dog associating it negatively
@@EnigmaEcho42 With the utmost respect, if you think prong and eCollars are abusive, you have a ways to go. They are two of the most wonderful, safe, and loving tools to use in training your dogs. I encourage you to keep doing your research and keep practicing. Some day, you will LOVE the prong collars and eCollars as much as your dogs do.
@@samwdavis I think they might be okay in SOME circumstances AND under heavy supervision & guidance from balanced professionals, like if the dog was at risk for being put down for its aggression or posing difficulties that might some day endanger them, but even so I still would have to research a bit more before fully agreeing with you.
Yeah, what I've seen in this video is more the style of training I prefer. Moderately assertive. Zak George's dog training is all rewards, all smiles, and being too soft for your dog to take you seriously.
@@samwdavis I've been using a prong collar with my lab/pit mix for a couple of months. Yes, it helps control her. Three or four days ago we switched to a Gentle Leader and it's been even better - except when something startles her. Then we're lucky she doesn't break her neck . . . she goes nuts and tries to get the Gentle Leader off her head by any means. We do not walk in areas that are fraught with huge distractions, usually. But, if we're walking outside we can't avoid all distractions. I don't know what I'm going to do in the long run. Sometimes the prong collar seems like the right choice. The Gentle Leader is better at other times. She's also extremely anxious when I leave and now refuses to go into her crate - something she did happily when I first got her off the streets. As her confidence has grown, it seems as if her "I'm going to do what I want to do" gene has kicked into gear! She is not friendly to other dogs or people - not aggressive but defensive. She is quickly becoming a tough dog for me . . . and, I've had dogs all my life. She is a new challenge!
This technique works awesomely! I have a 6-year old standard poodle who is very powerful and has a tendency to pull. I use an “easy walk” harness when I walk him which offers more control than just a collar, but this technique is the best! Thanks for sharing it, Beckman! My walks with Sam are so much more enjoyable now!
Oh shit. I just tried this technique without a "no pull harness," prong collar, control leash and just used a normal collar on my boy and it WORKS!!! Thanks for this! Now i just need to consistently do this with my 2 year old from here on out! I appreciate this video!!!!
Literally one day of this and my dog is obedient, not exaggerating. I tried positive-reinforcement training for 3 months with my pup at the advice of my vet/others, and it just led to him being spoiled and not stopping his negative behaviors. Now I have an actually disciplined dog who respects me, and who I don't feel guilty for giving treats and love to when he's actually good! Thank you for this!!

I tried positive reinforcement training. Worked but only for a time. This is also me putting in the work consistently! My dad then followed other techniques and my dog showed huge improvement in a day. 😂
Oh so happy to find a review that positive reinforcement has spoiled their pup. I'm currently struggling with my 4 months pup who gives me sassy and vexed reaction when I prevent her from doing what she wants. Went pretty firm/tough on her last night (no physical punishment, of course) and I'm already seeing some improvement on her taking 'no' from me. There are so many different aspects in training a young pup, and positive reinforcement simply IS NOT ALWAYS the gold standard to correct the bad behavior.
I tried this method for 5 minutes with each of my mini Aussies separately in the backyard, then took them on a 2 mile walk around the neighborhood and it was MAGIC!!! I can't say enough. My husband was SHOCKED. I've had dogs for over 30 years and this 11 minute video changed our lives. I also watch the one about jumping and my dogs don't jump anymore after 5 minutes of training. Thank you Thank you Thank you! I will be watching MORE. OH and the other one I've tried a few times with my Bella who only comes when she knows I have a treat, I think it's called to go get them method, it's already changing the way she comes when called. You are a genius!
I'm still amazed on how well this particular loose leash walking method works. Seriously! This method is durable, easy and works for all dogs. Thank you Joel for figuring out/ inventing this method! Mind blown. 😁😁😁
Im new 2 ur chanel but i really like u & ur methods of training. I used the come video 4 my 4 month old doberman & he responded very well & has remembered it today. I called him today when there was another person petting him & his attention was totally on her and i decited 2 try c if he come. I did just like u he instantly left her & came directly 2 me.

Just like this . She just did it ! I learned so much from her ! She passed away a few years ago . There’s many times I wish I could pick the phone up for guidance and friendship!!

Dogs sense when the human is in control. I volunteer to train service dogs. When they walk with their fosters they can be all over. I take the leash and instant change. So that’s when I show the foster some of the techniques I’ve learned from your video and from other great trainers I follow. Keep up the great work. Train one dog at a time. Teach the humans a 1000 at a time with your videos! ❤️

Thank you for this gorgeous video. I just tried it on a 7 months old puppy from Romania which was staying with my pack for 10 weeks now, and it worked fine.
I have to say a huge thank you I have been struggling for months with a large dogo argentino pulling me wherever he likes and NO amount of positive reinforcement was working and I was at my wits end as it was making every walk a nightmare for me. Today from the very start I did a few corrections and for the majority of the walk thereafter he was a different dog, stopping when I did, walking nicely beside me!! So much so I did a longer walk as I was actually enjoying it. I was all about positive reinforcement at the start of raising our pup but sometimes you just have to use whatever training works best for your dog and you🤷♀️

My 9 mo golden retriever has been driving me crazy with this-applied your method and attitude with him, and he got all the way up and down the apartment hallway without issue. I loved what you said-“this dog does whatever the hell he wants, and that stops today.” I love my dog and want him to have a great life, and I’m hoping that applying these methods will help-thanks so much!
Ok, seeing him biting you & biting & yanking the leash I said, great someone to show me how to stop the same problem I have. I have changed the collar from several different collars..even the prong. Ours is a Catahoula Leopard & this boy is WILD. He drags me all over the yard, he bites & i think he's partly scared too. Yesterday we were walking up the deck & he snapped & flew back down the steps & knocked me in the air & onto the ground. I'm 65 & he's 8mo & 60lbs. Just had him neutered & hoping it calms him some. This dog has had me in tears. We love him & will NOT give up on him. I've called 4 trainers, but no one wants to help so far. It can't be this hard. Thanks & I will keep watching. Blessings
I know It is so simple...but that "new move" just helped me figure out how to stop from getting into patterns, helps keep him paying attention to ME and makes things less predictable. Ozzy is smart he picks up on things and recognizes repetition. It is a natural thing to get into patterns, something that you have to watch out for when training, but it is so ingrained into us that is is difficult to think outside the box.

Between having to watch a 30 min video before then finding time to actually do the training and then hearing things like it will take two years to train a dog, I was seriously thinking of re-homing my dog. I just started training our dog with the correction for the loose leash method and he learned very quickly. My husband took the dog for his afternoon walk and he was amazed that the dog walked loose lease. He said, what a treat that was!

Love the change the stimulus advice! That's what I discovered with my new rescue, an Australian Kelpie/Cattle Dog Mix. Tried 3 types of harnesses, a martingale collar and finally tried the gentle leader. The gentle leader worked the best. She is finally making headway on her reactivity to other dogs. Thanks!

I'm so glad this showed up on my feed last night! I have a newly adopted 12 month old German Shepherd who spent most of her life in a shelter and has never been trained. I broke my left shoulder last week and she's been taking advantage of the situation, plus, the folk walking her aren't listening to my instructions that she needs to be steady and in a sit position before her walking collar is put on - they just want to get the collar on her as quickly as possible. This morning she was just doing what she wanted so I put her leash on her regular tag collar and started walking her around the house. It's amazing and I never thought it possible! Even with the broken shoulder I might be able to start walking her myself outside. Plus, right now I have a calm obedient dog rather than one who ignores me. Thank you so much for helping me get control back in my house without me losing my cool.
This dog is extremely easy compared to my working GSD. Hes also 11ish months and his brain is all over the place. However step by step we make progress. After a few corrections after "leaving me" he automatically offers a heel, that he has been tought, to me without me saying anything. I find it acceptable even though I havent asked for it - as long as he is "with me", its good.
Yes. I have a female Great Pyrenees who is extremely playful. She is very reactive and often times becomes fixated on movement of other things around her. After about 2 weeks of just some simple 2 hour sessions she is starting to become the dog I want her to be. I'm very glad I got her in my life.
This dog is a JOKE. Doesn't even pull!!!!!! My dog has his head to the ground and is following every friggin scent and will pull until he can't breathe and keep pulling

Thank you for this video. I have been working with my Black Lab (field lab) for months now almost daily, to try and train her to loose leash walk. Watched many other trainer and tried there approach with only minimal success. Try your method from this video and WOW. I was able to actually walk outside the fenced yard first try with your method. Perfectly no, but so much better and getting better every time. My husband can now walk her, training him to use this method. Watching more of your videos. Thank you
Two more of your good and useful methods, thank you so much. I think that 'stepping into the dog' with that right leg will help us a lot; as will changing the collar now an then -- mix things up a bit which should help to keep my 13-month Lab-Shep aware of the fact, and attentive to the fact, that she is on a leash.
This method really works. I adopted a BIG super strong greyhound, that had developed poor leash manners. He had two previous adoptions before us. But he was super adorable and smart. So I did this type of method, just stopping when he tried to be a Tractor! Got back his attention- with Stop, walk and Ok . And hand gestures to accompany the word. Same with going out the door. No walking straight out until I say OK. This was tested a couple of time when the door accidently didn't latch, and I came home after some shopping with him sitting behind the open door, waiting for me to return!😊

Hi there. I watch all your videos. Love your work. I have a West Highland Terrier. Ellie. Rescued at 6. Spent her life in a small backyard and never had interaction with other dogs or humans we were told. Owner would walk at 4am and jog before work.
After 12 months we are no further advanced with her lead training.Ellie pulls, lunges and barks on the lead. She is 6 kgs. She had shock collar history plus variety of collars including chockers. Have tried Gentle Leader which did not work, she would spin around. We are now trying a dual clip and lead harness combination. Ellie gets very excited and somewhat aggressive at times on lead, especially any dogs comes too close. Ellie has a " boundary issue" we think. Her body language really changes when she sees another dog.
We send regularly her to farmstay to learn how to be a dog and mix with lots of dogs, big and small. She is a different dog, she loves it. No aggression!!
I am too frightened to let her off lead on beach with other dogs. We do not want vet bills!.
I sent her for training and it did not work. There was no interaction with other dogs during the training. Trainer did not see her normal behaviour. She got her to do short loose lead walking in a pristine environment! When I took over following her instructions Ellie was good in our backyard and home but then back to her old ways in our environment, a busy dog beach!! Dog distraction!!! She is good at the usual sit, stay, come,training plus playing with her toys.
We now go for walks when the beach is quiet. We cannot socialise with our dog friends.Vet recommended calming medication. Ellie is a great dog and she has settled in well in new home, very affectionate, we love her.
I watch all your videos, have spent a fortune on socialisation farmstay and training. Will do anything for her second chance.

Hi Joel, many times dog’s behaviors are the results of the owner’s behavior. Many owners don’t believe that dogs feel the energy of the owner through the leash. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to Joel - I've used his methods on my 6 month old labradoodle and he's now a loose leash puppy almost 100% of time. Not perfect yet but he's only 6 months old so I'm not expecting much of him. I've only used Joel's methods gently - never any treats, prongs, Ecollar, hard popping or harsh words :)
I like this method. It’s similar to what I did to my dog 18 years ago but my new dog 6 moths old and I have watched your video about 3 times to make sure I am doing it correct. In the video you make it seem like an instantaneous change but what are real expectations. Thank you

After 3 trainers, all collar types, and a dog behaviourist...this is what finally worked for my dogo/bull mix. This works.
“This dog does what ever the hell it wants, those days are over.” This is where we need to be. We want to train our dogs but have to remember to train ourselves to be committed to help them be better through training.

Still , we need to work on meeting other dogs , but the loose leash walking , making connection with my dog is the key.

I'm a soft spoken person and in the past I've let mean, rude people (mainly women) run me over to avoid conflict... Not anymore... I'M OVER IT...!! I set my boundaries and now people at work treat me with respect... I'm still soft spoken, kind and respectful, but I've learned to be firm when need be... My life has changed for the better.. and some day I'm gonna get Beckmans shirt that says I'M OVER IT...

I have watched videos after videos on how to stop my 2-year old Golden Retriever to stop pulling and lunging. I am 68 years old with spinal stenosis and arthritis on both knees so it's very hard to walk a pulling dog. When I saw your video, I was very skeptical and even said, "No way this is going to work". But when you said you will have your dog for 12 years and you can't have the patience to do 15 stops, that convinced me to give it a try. I was so very pleasantly surprised. It did work! Even before 15 stops, he wasn't pulling anymore. We even went for a longer walk because my back and knees were not hurting. I can't thank you enough for teaching me how to train my dog. Now if you would kindly send me a link to a video that will teach my dog not to jump up on people, I would greatly appreciate it.
I can’t even get my dog to stop bouncing around without the gentle leader. He is 14 month old golden doodle. Calm everywhere in house until someone comes over or we go outside.

I just saw this video and am taking my six-month old Golden Retriever Molly for a walk. I'll let you know if it works . Fingers crossed. ---- I just got back from the walk - Changing the leash from the back of the harness to the front made all the difference. Although I have to admit she is an excellent dog and listens very well. The gentle tug from the front made her take notice and she responded after a few tugs. Revisiting this video as I’ve been studying to have a well behaved, happy and trained pup. I have 2 Great Dane pups and we took Cersei for her first walk around the whole neighborhood and it was an amazing walk having these methods in case I needed them. Kinda froze up and didn’t know what to do when neighbor dogs were out in their front yards barking at her through the gate she was so frightened I didn’t know what to do except tell her to ignore them and kept walking. She does run right out of the door though so we need some practice there…
I have a 4 y.o. German/Aussie shepherd. I got her at 9 mo old. She is a Very friendly, outgoing, curious, alert girl, and protective of me when needed. Previous owner was a large, strong man who used a claw collar AND a halty with her. I said I would not need them when I brought her home, as I hate "gimmicky" things, and prefer working with their minds. Being a farm dog she wasn't walked on a leash much. Now we are in an urban setting. It has taken me at least 3 months to figure out something close to working with her. I'm 5'1", 140 lb, she's 75 lb. She would pull me along when walking, ignoring me mostly, and when saw other dogs/people, would run to jump excitedly on them for attention, pulling me into a large tree at one point, but better than down to the pavement! I started using a somewhat similar method as yours, and saw some success, but I wasn't quite "trained" yet. Though I was using a method close to yours, I was too tense, had the leash too short, and would over correct. I found this video of yours yesterday, and tried out your method/style just 10 minutes ago. I loosed the lead, let her "walk out", gave a quick correct, walked to her, and we continued on. Repeated this about 8 times with her. I saw IMMEDIATE improvement in her walk, paying attention to me, enjoying the walk, and we even had a dog interrupt, and she immediately came back to listening to me mode!!! It took about 8 corrections, and we have already established a much more wonderful walk. I realize this is not a "got it perfect for forever" deal. Yet, as I continue to teach "US", I look forward to much better communication with her, and many happy (and safer) walks with as a result of these small but vital changes. We didn't address proper walking etiquette with our dog when we got him, so now we're trying to correct and this looks extremely practicable.

After watching a few of your videos I did decide to subscribe. I have been trying to acclimate a new friend I adopted a couple of weeks ago. His name is Tipper and has LOT of issues. While most of the time he is attentive on leaf & has already learned to stop, turn, & mostly heel, we are still working on him getting out in front. I know early training will be an essential part of him gaining confidence not only in himself but also in me. I saw this last night and used this technique on our walk today. I did not need to use such an exaggerated movement as he is EXTREMELY shy, fearful, & sensitive but it worked well and helped to get us back on course !! Thanks !!

Any suggestions for when off leash dogs approach us and my dog is freaking out? Happened to us yesterday, the other owner wasn’t around at first to recall his dogs. My dog completely freaked out. They were smelling him but wouldn’t leave. I was able to get his head away from the other dogs so no bites happened. But I was scared!
Carry a walking stick to defend yourself and your dog's. Sad but I'd rather have my dog stay safe and not have them bit!

Love this video, it really hits home because I go back and forth with my dog from gentle leader to regular collar to keep him on his toes and his walks just get better and better. I'm still not good enough to get all the check ins with my dog though so I know I have to put more effort into that and I will be trying that new move!
I've been struggling for five years with my female GS, she's very intelligent, she knows tricks and complex commands, but for some reason, she never learned how to go for a walk properly. I've tried EVERYTHING, and nothing worked so I opted for hiking activities and free roam training on open wide areas. I just found this video at 1am and by 1:30am she walked like the most calm dog in the world by my side. AMAZING 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This worked like a charm! Our intact male lab is 15 months old and was pulling more and more (going for that irresistible scent of god knows what). Did this about 3 or 4 times per walk during a 2 walks and no more pulling (and, btw, we use a harness, no collar). Have to repeat it once every now and then but that's it. Best advice ever!
The dog is anxious and confused (note: lip licking every time you stop and pull the lead). You have exchanged a prong collar for sharp pulls on the neck, not that much difference between the two. Anyone watching - these techniques will likely create long-term problems for your dog.

Beckman you saved our life, I moved from a farm to the middle of Amsterdam with two sisters old English bulldogs at 1.5 years old 35 kilos each ( i weigh 50 kilos)
They broke my wrist busted my hip dragged me over the concrete with concussion and black eyes
3 months on walking them 8x a day seperatly we progressed to loose leash walking together. The door method literally saved our lives
We still have so much to learn but I finally feel confident to take my girls to the forest and come back in one piece THANK YOU!

B.S. This dog is already trained. He never pulled on the leash. I have a border collie. She pulls me constantly. Tried collar, choker, harness, martingale, nothing works. She's my 7th dog. None of the others behaved this way. She's perfect in the house. Knows all her commands on hand signals. But take her outside and she changes to a monster.

This has been a huge game changer for me and can't thank you enough. After the first 5 minutes of this method its like I have a new dog. My 2 year old is extremely pray motivated (wirehaired pointing griffon). On walks he is always leading and is distracted at anything with a pulse. After one session he's walking beside me and I'm not even holding the leash. The only difference is that I used a slip leash rather than a standard collar with a leash. He was used to pulling with a regular collar and a prong collar. The slip leash is great since it rides a bit lower on the neck so when you pull the dog turns around easily. I barely have to pull and its effective. The snowflakes in the comments must all have dogs that run their household. Not once does the dog whelp in this video. I've seem much harsher methods. Thanks again.
Thank you for everything you do. This has really helped but on my walk today, where I stopped and pulled back probably 50 times (because you said we won't do it :) ) I had these two thoughts. My dog is a 30kg American Staffy and she has a high prey drive. We walk where there are a lot of rabbits and they often scamper across our path. She was on a halter, so I looked into something better and settled on a half choke collar which is soft, and a zero shock 1.2 m leash to save my shoulders. How to stop a high prey drive dog as leave it does not always suffice. Is the leash too short and the wrong leash? Should I get a gentle leader? Thank you once again for all your work. It seems you the only one out there that makes sense to me.
Work on teaching your dog to “look” at you in the home without distractions. Once you get that, move to outside on the leash without distractions. It will take time but as that progresses you can start to do it when distractions are present and eventually it will work. Tools like leashes and collars are just that, tools to help with training. It’s up to you to teach the desired behaviours while remembering that inside the home you’re a lot more interesting to a dog than outside. You have to work to make your dog see you as the most interesting thing in all situations. Hope that helps!
I’ve been watching several videos on how to get your dog to stop pulling. Many of them use pinch/prong collars, and one even insisted that you have to correct so hard that the dog yelps, which I absolutely refuse to do to my dog. You’ve given me hope to get my dog trained successfully without hurting my dog.
I find the hardest part is re-conditioning my 10 mo old Malinois to me. If I have someone who walks her who has never walked her before, she is perfectly behaved after a few corrections. I myself need to do 10+, and then continuously correct every block. Not sure why she is so loose with me. Granted, I've had her for only a month after I picked her up from a shelter (where she was found as a stray).
Edit: my neighborhood is very condensed with about 20 other dogs and 100 squirrels, so she has way too many distractions. I think a new person is just so much of a distraction it outweighs the others.

quite literally after 5 minutes of using this technique my collie was 90% better, very few corrections needed, and he was just as good starting out the next day. Simply amazing.
