    compost pile, same as youre tomatoes i had a pumpkin plant come up on one of my compost piles... funny thin is that on my usual plot in the garden i got 3 plants that produced 6 pumpkins each between 2 and 4 kilograms .... but my volunteer pumpkin on the pile gave me 2 pumpkins one of 14 and another of 17 kilograms!... also never watered... .so the pile truly is amazing!

    This will be my 5th season planting garlic and if I were you I would not plant garlic so close to anything else. Make sure they and their roots are at LEAST 6 inches away. from their closest neighboring plant. I made the mistake of not doing that last winter and my harvest this spring produced a lot of small bulbs . In my first years of growing garlic when they had no competition, the bulbs were either large or jumbo sized.

    New subscribers here! So glad this video came up in my feed as I haven’t watched you in a while and had not ever subscribed 🤦🏻‍♀️A much needed reminder and encouragement as I have faltered on planting any fall crops yet. In zone 8, and we have had some hot days (and seems that much will grow well then bolt early like crazy) but getting cooler. Also felt like maybe too late as well to grow from seed in situ.l, but nope, gonna try it!! Have seed in hand… just need to prep beds post summer crops

    Additional comment with question… do you have the invasive weed Florida betony which loves cooler weather? We are always looking for way to suppress it at least without chemicals but it is tough and grows everywhere. May not like zone 7 lowest temps.

    QUESTION Gary, we have a lot of hot peppers still growing, zone 7A, do you leave them on the plant until frost or let them dry like beans or harvest them all before hand and process them for winter?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Місяць тому

      I prefer to dry them without getting a frost. So indoors or in a shed. I have let facing heavens dry through frost and they were fine. Smaller peppers that are well on the way to dry are fine. But fresher peppers that freeze can get soft and rot.

    My garlic that I planted October 21st has sprouted 6" tall. Here in Florida 9b, is that normal? This is the first time I've grown garlic. Thanks.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  22 дні тому

      Thats normal in general but in Florida you dont get a cold period. So it's never going to be dormant. I would look up how to grow garlic in Florida. It varies.

    I like to put in cover crops in Sep and Oct. Do you recomment sowing them around existing warm weather crops like peppers and eggplants that are still in the ground or even around blueberry bushes?

    • @ericamartin7490

      I’m about to just do the same thing next don’t wanna pull the peppers yet they are still flourishing lol .. but don’t wanna miss out on the cover establishing so figured will sow in between for now since the cold nights are coming faster than anticipated

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Місяць тому +2

      I have lots of compost so I don't use cove crops. Putting them around fading warm crops is a good idea as you need enough warmth for them to grow well.

    Does soft neck garlic need to be chilled in the refrigerator before planting? If yes for how long?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      Not really. Some cold does help but it often gets that when planted. If you are concerned 2 weeks in a fridge helps.
