  • one of Don Knotts' greatest performances. he was obviously a great comedy actor but scenes like this, as well as the one where Andy was accused of misconduct and Barney defended him on trial, proved he was just a great all around actor.

It seems the good ol days of yester year are gone. That is why we must instill these values in our children and our children's children. Only with these values good manors and God will they survive this new world. P.S. I realized the icons name is ironic... I intend to change it once I figure out how to do so lol. @@jonothandoeser He has always played a fearful person. Mostly Bragging about things he has no experience in doing. I believe he maned up otherwise why would he ask Andy to stay out of it this time? He did get a pep talk from Andy and Andy was even willing to deal with the matter. He did use the words Andy used. He just lacked confidence and was absolutely relieved when it payed off. He is a small man and faced with giants. A lesser man would have so cowardly as to use and abuse their authority as in the badge and the gun. This paved the way however for other movies to come such as the ironically named ghost of Mr chicken. Sometimes hard to tell if he portrays a fearful man or simply a man who lacks confidence. I think it's ok if you have fear it can sometimes keep you alive. It can keep you from doing stupid or dangerous things. We all bost and eventually someone asks us to prove it. I try not to bost and if I do it's about something I have done and can prove or do again. I feel like I'm writing a book here. I suppose what I am getting at is a person is only a coward if they choose to remain a coward especially when they see something they know they can do something about. Say they see someone being mugged and they just pretend they didn't see or hear anything or even run away instead of getting help for that person but, if even though they are scared and chose to stand up to a person they know and believe they have no hope of beating then in that moment they may be considered brave. It's also left up to ones perspective of things. One could say he would be foolish to stand up to a stronger opponent.

***** And the townsfolk would have, and often did have, creeps, thugs, murderers and robbers for breakfast.
If you killed a cop back then, just like now, you inked your death warrant.
I would trust Andy with my life.
      Barney, not so much.
What you call stupid, I call straightforward and honest. And courageous.

      Black Robe Regiment South Dakota
      Had to laugh.
Andy Griffith came out in the '60s. WW2 had been over for 15 years. Hell, Gomer Pyle from this series went to enlist in VietNam.
You might want to factcheck a little.
Some cops back then were helping lynch blacks, some were great peace officers.
When you speak in generalizations SO broad, you sound like an idiot.

Lawman Barney is a great episode, which shows Don Knotts' range as an actor. It makes you think there were days in Mayberry when Barney was as comically bumbling as we have seen him, and there were days where he was a serious lawman.

One of the best things about this show was how Andy and Barney always had each others back. Andy would always help Barney out on the sly and had the class to never let him know what he did and Barney would do what he can to defend or back Andy up. There's not one show with such a strong bond between two characters male or female today.

I appreciate a situation where a character can depend on what is representing him to help him stand up.
How often do we see shows where it's the character of a single person that determines whether or not they avoid getting beaten up or getting bullies to back down?
How many people think they have to prove that they can only depend on themselves?
It's a bad message. People need to know they can depend on their administration to back them up.

Allan Melvin played a whole host of different characters guest starring on TAGS. I'd say he was probably in about 10 - 12 episodes total. Then he became a semi-regular on the spinoff Gomer Pyle, USMC. People often wonder why producers and directors of TV shows keep bringing back the same character actors, episode after episode and year after year, to play in guest-starring roles, as opposed to trying out new people. The answer is simple. With someone like Melvin, you KNEW what you had: A proven commodity, a dependable actor who would always show up on time, always knew his lines, and would never try to steal a scene from the stars of the show. No problems at all, no fuss, very low maintenance. But at the same time, very competent.

Barney always had it in him all he had to do was to be firm and serious. As a law enforcement official he stood his ground. Even Andy was watching from a distance but not too far off. I like the announcements on METV when no doubt Frank Sinatra sings, "That's Why They Call Me Mr Cool" That's when they're announcing the Andy Griffith show. In this scene Barney never lost his cool he always had it in him. He's one tough law man.
