Good reminder to start cancelling services I barely use. DJEP will probably go first since I plan all timelines and music with the client anyway. Always value your recommendations. Thank you!

    Couldn't agree more.
I'm guessing as new, younger DJ's come on board, that have never had to buy vinyl, a CD or an MP3 in their life, have no choice but to stream.
The concept of owning music is alien to Gen-Z's.
I started DJing to feed my vinyl habit. I was buying more and more music and needed a way to fund it. And I found out people would pay me to play music at their house parties and it went from there!
Also, when did it becomes a required to have access to every song on the planet?
Before streaming, if we didn't have it in our crates/collection, we didn't play it. I still swear by this!
If the client requires any specific song(s), they are talked about and purchased in advance. Otherwise - tough!
And that includes playing random ish from UA-cam!

I'm going to say what most DJ's won't and may hate me for : I'm glad I quit. I Dj'd for years and I used to love it, but then it became a game and a hunt for cash. I Went from getting great money and making a lot of people happy to dealing with paying more than what I was receiving, (growing up/living in and Setting business in a small city/town) having to up my prices which pissed a lot of people off and then also dealing with the saturation of young kids coming in claiming they're "dj's".

It’s getting to be ridiculous, record pools are looking better and better again. Maybe we need to get back the old days when you may not have a certain record in your crate..it’s too easy to pull up a request on a streaming service.
Good call on cutting the cable, I did it 15ish years ago!

I use a DJ service for my tunes.
Talked to another DJ in a music store who says he just uses Spotify! He records Spotify songs onto CD and loads them into his music library. Highly illegal, by the way!
He claims nobody cares or checks!
How do you compete against that?

Bought the Serato DJ Pro Suite years ago and haven't looked back. Other than that, I buy everything from the Apple Music Store, or whatever it's called these days. Haven't used a record pool since 2004 or so and it's worked out pretty well for me. I hate subscriptions!

Believe it or not...thats why i still by CDs. I have a hard copy i can put on a computer and the quality is better. Some music pools that give you permanent access to zongs also better than monthly subscriptions.

I don’t watch tv. My husband and daughter do. I kept telling my husband that it’s a car payment. Finally a year ago he too cut it, but… we have Netflix and Prime or whatever it is. 🙄 I can truly do without tv, but not internet.
Get one or two really good music subscriptions and get rid of the rest. 😬 As for planning software, it is nice, but I hear your take on it. Thank you for this! Minds are churning now. 😄

I bought my DJ software 17 years ago, and it hasn't cost me a penny since. DJs now have it easy when they can access over 100 million tracks for less than a dollar per day. Buying vinyl (when that was the only format) cost a LOT more than $20 per month.

You hit a lot of good points... There are pro's and con's to each scenario.
I personally like to own my apps and music... Have a LOT invested in it.
Cut off the internet, I can DJ just fine... no worries.
I am not afraid of saying, sorry, don't have that song... would you like something similar.
I also subscribed to planning apps - didn't work for me and my clients.. Yup, the one you were sponsored by.. :)
Technically, you didn't "cut the cable" - you just stopped using it for cable television.. that cord is still connected and sucking up $$$ - just less than it used to.
    Peace Brother!

I believe that the club DJ is a ding of the past more or less, and bedroom and mobile DJs are mainstream now and very popular. Everyone's a djay I believe this is why subscription services have gone up in price. You're getting regular folks wanting to use djay software And copyrighted music yes we cut the cord on cable too and I have to say I miss it but I don't miss the price. It would be great if subscription services would bring to price down but they know we like the builds and whistles and they got us by the Bwalls😂

Some people absolutely love it & it's helped them grow their business. It's not for everybody, though. It's not for me with what I'm doing right now ether. If you ever see or hear about anything at all that's not for you, or does not make sense for you on my channel (or anywhere else), that's totally cool!

    • @neonhills
      @neonhills Місяць тому

@@briansredd It seems like a great app which is why I was willing to consider it; until i learned the price. DJs who use this have got to work A LOT OF WEDDINGS for it to make sense. I DJ about 100 days per year but only 4-5 are weddings. The saddest part is that I'm sure they could easily have 10x more customers and 3x more profits $$$ if they reduced the price to 30$/month like a dj pool. But instead of helping more DJs and more couples to create more amazing moments they chose elitist high prices, and excluded most of our community.

Streaming though alows the less commited dj access to millions of songs without the overhead. They do not deserve ownership when their subscription expires. Like you, I too have subscribed to a promo service since 1995! 30 years worth of cds and digital. For pennies. My investment for my future.

Like everything else; it’s the cost of doing business. I’m more pissed at the ridiculously expensive high end controllers. Paying over a grand for a controller is outrageous.

I know djs that still have and actively using rane 57sl with cdj 800 on a basic old school windows laptop and it works!
I'm at the point where as soon as my main software (serato) goes full subscription I'm gonna just freeze my equipment right there!
A fully functional 2012 laptop with 2012 Operating system, 2012 version of DJ software & a 2012 DJ setup that you're comfortable with can last up to 15 years if you are careful enough.
So in theory a 2024 DJ setup could last till 2034-39 with minor maintenance needed.

I switched to the Denon Prime Go…because it includes Engine DJ. It also works with Virtual DJ…which I can buy for $300. I have Tidal DJ…which is $20 a month and I was just given a hard drive with 83K songs on it. I am going to start buying songs from iTunes every month and I tend to look into a Record pool….

I will often temporarily cancel a subscription if I know I'm not going to use it for a month or more. I used to do that with some record pools but they started having limits on how many times you can cancel then rejoin. With things like Tidal, Soundiz, Canva, etc I will just pay for the months that I know I will actually be using them. It can be a bit of a task to keep up with all of the subscriptions but it's a necessary evil to avoid paying for services that you are not using.

  • @DJPaulDiddy

You can get an unlimited subscription for 12.99 on some which isn’t bad. I think it cost less now for music then ever before a CD used to be 19$ for one album now I can get all the music I want for less then price of a cd per month and all modern DJ controllers come with the software free. Go buy ten CDs you could pay for the music service for the year. So I’m
    Not understanding this theory ??

Wait, so we preach about raising prices constantly, but we don't think everyone else has a right? Go back to the days of paying per album, per 45 single, gas, time. Many don't realize how good they have it. If $50 more bucks a month is a problem then get busier or charge more.

    • @briansredd
      @briansredd  Місяць тому +2

I understand what you are saying, and I hope I don't preach about raising prices! What I do try to advocate for is knowing what your expenses are, recoup that & then pay yourself. At any rate, I think what I'm trying to express here is that with so many new subscription based services popping up & in some cases, those subscription prices on the rise, some of us may want to consider what's necessary & what isn't. If an extra $50 is a necessary expense, then that's the cost of doing business & should be added to your operating budget. If after evaluation, it's about as useful as Cable TV was for me, then maybe you don't really need it.

I just cancelled Beatsource. Thinking about getting rid of Tidal as well.
I was on the $13 plan and I enjoyed it. Then I noticed a lot of tracks were “unavailable “. I not talking about the intro and outros.
Tidal is ripping us off. They claimed it’s the record labels. Yet, beatsource, SoundCloud, Deezer still allowed stems to function just fine.
