It's hilarious how Tarantino sometimes lets real-life situations intrude on the plot. Like getting lost in a department store or forgetting where you parked your car, which weirdly never seems to happen in most films.
squamish4244 that is the reason why his stuff appealed to me so much- it's spontaneous like real life. You ever consider how each character seem to have their very own personal vernacular? You think everyone would sound the same or something but they never do.
It's amazing how De Niro played an absolute boss in both Casino and Heat 2 years earlier, but also smashes it as a total fu**-up in this movie. Casting him in this was a genius move by Tarantino.
Melanie's comments are actually quite accurate, especially the "job a little too much for you?" remark that provokes the De Niro stare. He is in fact out of his depth. But actually saying so was not a smart move.
It reminds me of the look he gives Johnny Roastbeef in Goodfellas when he asks him are you being a fucking wiseguy with me. De Niro is easily one of the greatest actors of all time
Ladies....some advice: If you EVER happen to be in a relationship with an ex-con, don't EVER....and I mean EVER...clown him on the fact that he did time....and if you value your life, don't insult his manhood!
It’s called the Ally McBeal Therapy procedure where you imagine yourself doing something incomprehensible to de-stress so that you don’t get to the point where you have to act it out for real 😂
This movie was adapted from a 1992 Elmore Leonard novel entitled "Rum Punch." Elmore Leonard wrote dozens of stories in a similar vein over the course of his career. Hi novels almost always featured bad guys who were comically incompetent, but were just smart enough to be extremely dangerous when push came to shove. That is exactly what we see in this scene.
Most are just smart enough to be dangerous. It's why they get caught. Then idiots brag like going t jail or prison is some how tough or cool. No, it's a sign of poor planning or execution of said plan.
Louis was too dumb to competently handle the money exchange, but smart enough to realize that he could shoot Melanie and get away from the scene if he just continued walking like nothing happened.
I hear you Jerry. It's hot, the crowds, the madness,...then,..you got to locate the car, then exit the car park. My trigger finger is twitching. (Take care man😄♥️)
Great acting but Melanie was way out of her depth and had no idea how dangerous her situation was. Almost like she was a criminal tourist. She's living with her gun-running boyfriend, who is a murderer. This man also allows men coming out of prison to stay in the house, and knows that she is willing to sleep with these criminals after only a short time of knowing them. She also feels empowered to antagonize and belittle men who are very dangerous. In the end it gets her killed. Melanie was not some smart, strong, criminal. She was a lost girl who ended up getting murdered in a parking lot by her murdering, gun-running boyfriends friend who happened to be a murderous, felon on parole. A tragic end to the life of someone who seemed to have found themselves in the criminal world almost by mistake and had no idea what she was actually involved in. But great acting for sure. Jackie Brown on the other hand, finds herself in the criminal world by circumstance but knows very well what world she lives in. Melanie would have been strangled in her apartment if she were Brown. Brown knows what life she's in a turns the tables. A strong, smart, woman who a movie could be made about.
@@nietherniether7508 Yes, and has the awesome music of Nina Simone and Hans Zimmer's epic soundtrack. Gabriel Byrne is also amazing. Was one of my favourite movies as teenager. 💗🙏
You like it better than Django or Resevoir dogs or PUlp fiction? I ask cause I haven't seen it yet and am contemplating renting it on netflix. Edit: Whoa...nevermind just went to netflix and its included in the monthly sub! See you guys in 2.5 hours~
I remember my dad, a man of rare emotion, silent but watching thiswhe on VHS. Mom and I rented it. Unexpectedly, when Fonda gets shot, dad bursts into laughter, then I laugh. My dad asks me to rewind it so we can watch it again. Mom suddenly jumps from the couch, mad,and says something like "Yall think that's funny?!?" Then mom starts to dramatically leave the room but her foot was wrapped around the lamp cord (she was painting her nails). She jerks the lamp from the end table and stumbles across the den. Dad and I laugh even harder. Mom was so angry. We could hear her cussing, then she returns, snatches the tape from the VCR and leaves the house. She drives to town, in her house gown, returns the tape and the owner calls the house. He said mom came into the store, angry, yelling, and slams the tape on the counter. Mom returns, still mad. Then dad says, "They're going to charge you for not rewinding the tape." He kinda snickers. Then mom leaves again, even madder. She returns to the rental place, asks for the tape so she can rewind it. He tells her that he already did it then she starts yelling at him. He calls back and says mom backed into another car and she's yelling at the policeman. We had to drive her purse to town. The policeman pulls dad to the side and tells him that mom had been cursing and yelling. He asked dad what happened. Dad explains. The policeman walks back to mom, says something, then mom starts pointing and screaming. The policeman is laughing and mom starts yelling at him. She starts to leave then she ramd our truck. She backs up and hits us again. We were at the police station for a while, then dad says "Your nails are half painted." We chuckle. It took several policeman to pull mom off of dad. We had to call grandma and grandpa. We didn't get home til Johnny Carson. I'll never forget that night.

she's obviously a very intelligent woman...take two hours to fix your hair and arrive late for the drop, then get angry because you're forced to hurry up, then make a scene in the store instead of keeping your mouth shut and staying put, then continually bust the balls of a dangerous ex-con who has clearly had enough and gave you fair warning. honestly, who did she think she was fucking with?
+Sam Ace Rothstein He deliberately pretended to search for his car so he could take her out to the middle of the parking lot where nobody was there. He intended to kill her right there, I think.
No. It was an impulsive act. He seems a little embarrassed later telling Ordell about it. He had no good answer to why he "couldn't just hit her". After that masterpiece Ordell might have been thinking about letting another employee go, and that was before the real punchline. If it was premeditated, his plan to take her out in the parking lot shows him to be an imbecile. Whereas if he had shot her while they were still inside the department store building, he would have been a full-blown idiot.
the "see just where I said it was" is what elevated the scene for me. brilliant the way Tarantino can show a murder like that 1 second and have us laughing the next. The way he intertwines death and murder with humor is unbelievably good. I've seen a lot of other movies try this and very few get away with it: always seems like they're trying to hard. With tarantino it's believable, it seems natural with the story, and it's actually a well written and well acted joke and not some hacky bullshit throw away line.
