It’s so funny because I am the same way. Never really listen to her and got sucked into an algorithm last summer with Eras Tour. Some songs I never really appreciated, some songs, I didn’t realize were hers, but the more I listen, the more I love her. And for some reason I get really teary-eyed even if it’s not a sad song. They said she agreed to the lyrics, she did not. They made her look like a liar and nearly destroyed her career with social media trending # taylorsoverparty and snake emoji's 🐍🐍🐍🐍. She is so prolific, that she always has a new album coming out and so is always in the competition. Writing songs is hard. Writing good songs is harder. That's why most artists have a team of writers and producers. Not Taylor. She's written every lyric in every song on every album - most of them music and lyrics. Lately she's collaborated with Aaron Dessner from The National to showcase his talents and bring him out of obscurity where he'd been for 10 years before working with Taylor. It's hard for artists who's albums are good to win over her because her albums are simply better songs and better writing. She hasn't won album of the year three times for nothing. What people are grumbling about is "Hey she's won enough awards, give someone else a chance." That's not how life works. People who are more talented will always beat less talented people, whether we're talking Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jorden in basketball, Wayne Gretsky in hockey, the black gymnast Simone Biles or any of the athletes who win their gold medals fairly in the Olympics. I know he didn’t mean to be hurtful when he made the “Illuminati” comment. From an outsider’s perspective, I can understand why he wasn’t sure why Taylor is still relevant. If you’re not familiar with her catalog, you don’t realize what a wide range of genres she has covered. The thing about Taylor is that she works extremely hard, she’s super versatile (meaning, she can do so much more than just pop), and she’s super relatable. Her music is literally the diary to her life… yet it’s so relatable to mostly everyone to listens. That’s why people feel like they know her, like she’s their best friend… even though they’ve never actually met her. Her genres also switch up, depending on the season of her life. She started out country, which is reminiscent of her teenage singer/songwriter years. Then she moved into pop, and then into folk, and now she’s currently in her folky-pop era. She’s had to reinvent herself so many times to stay at the top of her game. She talks all about this stuff in her documentary, Miss Americana. It really gives you insight into who she is and what she’s gone through, both personally and professionally (especially at the hands of the media, all the Kim/Kanye stuff, etc.). But at the core of all this… it’s her lyrics. Timeless. Relatable. Vulnerable.

Taylor forgave him, wrote a nice song to show she forgave him, and then Kanye & Kim K screwed her over with the ‘bitch’ comment in his song and an edited phone call. Also, like others have said, Taylor is still on top because she works her ass off and she’s probably the greatest lyricist of her generation. She’s put out music in a lot of genres. People who only know her for what’s been played on the radio don’t really know her work.
She is one of the hardest and most driven artist around. She wrote 3 albums during the Covid Shutdown. Once things started returning to normal, she had 3 albums ready to go! I think when you have only listened to a small amount of her music you may have a harder time to get it. Like this song is a good song... however you haven't heard her songs yet that really show you her deep songwriting ability. Her new album is full of that example. Now unlike a lot of other artists she writes her songs. She may have one or two people credited for writing on a song but not dozens.... she writes them. She has videos on UA-cam that are making the song videos that show you her process. She doesn't win every year at all. Last year she did win album of the year but if you listen to that album you can see it. Sonically midnights is a great album. Now that you have seen some of her live performances maybe dive into some of her best songs that showcase that songwriting. More so than the mic-grabbing incident was when Kanye had Kim release an illegally recorded and edited video of him seemingly asking permission for him to release a song in which he mentioned Taylor. The true lyrics were "I feel like me and Taylor might still have a*x. Why? I made that b**** famous!" On the call, he only mentioned the "having s*x" part but not that he would be calling her that word or claiming he made her famous. When the song dropped, Taylor said it was misogynistic for him to say that and then Kim dropped the video which had been edited to look like Taylor had given the "OK" to the lyrics. Millions of people were sending Taylor threats and calling her horrendous things, and she almost completely disappeared. Years later, the full unedited video came out, showing Taylor had been telling the truth, but by that point she had already been torn apart needlessly by society. Neither Kim nor Kanye have ever commented on the authentic video nor made any attempt at apologies. Edit: also, Taylor has graciously lost to several artists and has actually come out to speak against "fans" who have tried to hate on someone for winning over her, saying that she knows they deserve the award. On one of her documentaries, when she realized one of her albums was not nominated for an award, her initial reaction was "I need to work harder and do better, and the next album will be better". She puts in the work for it always, and that's why so many artists respect her.
I honestly implore your friend to do a little more digging into Taylor Swift, her discography, her writing and her history. She doesn’t win awards because of her name. She wins awards because of the work she puts in to writing, production, and yes, promotion. She was signed at 15 with Sony as a songwriter, youngest person to be signed as such. At the age of 19, she wrote the entire album Speak Now by herself. She writes all of her songs either by herself, or with 1-2 collaborators. She plays guitar. She plays piano. She’s extremely talented. She’s put out 11 original albums and 4 re-recorded albums since 2006. Her music spans multiple genres from country to pop to folk and genres in between. People only know the radio hits (which are legitimate country and pop perfection songs, and hits for a reason) and nothing else about her/the rest of her music, and make inaccurate judgements. The more you know about her and her music and her activism for artist rights…the more you can appreciate her.

Kanye made a song and called Taylor, pretending to be nice and get her to ok the lyrics but failed to mention that he was going to call her a B in the song, they secretly taped the conversation and then Kim maliciously released an edited version of the phone call, making it sound as if Taylor did give her ok about the lyrics. When the song came out, Taylor came out and said that he never told her that he was going to call her a B. Kim went on a public rant with the edited phone call and calling her a liar and tons of derogatory names “to help her husbands’ good name stay intact”. That’s utterly ridiculous because he is a lying hypocrite who is literally crazy. In the song, Kanye says “Taylor Swift and I might still have “xes”. Why? Because I made that B-- famous”. Umm. She was already famous because he had already taken her 1st Grammy away from her back in 2009. All of the people in his concert were chanting “F Taylor Swift” over and over. She never agreed to him calling her a B on the song in that phone call but Kim/Kanye both just wanted to hurt her for no reason other than they’re both sick jealous people. #TaylorSwiftisOver trended after the falsely edited phone call was released by Kim. Taylor was being portrayed as a liar and a snake. It hit her extremely hard because she truly prides herself on being a good and honest person. She left the country and industry for a full year. She came back better than ever with “Reputation”. She fully embraced the snake and still uses it to this day. The REAL UNEDITED version of that phone call was eventually released about 18 months later which proved that Taylor was telling the truth the whole time. Did Kim or Kanye ever apologize? No. They’re still so jealous of her that they’ve actually done more to her. It’s vile. He had a naked wax figure of her in his bed in one of his videos. Plus more. It’s always to hurt Taylor when Taylor was never anything but nice and polite to both of them. She even forgave him about the 2009 Grammy stunt yet Kanye wasn’t done with hurting Taylor yet. Umm. She is literally on a world tour right now, released an album with 31 songs in April and a music video in May, then came back to the tour after a “2 month break” and her tour set list had been changed along with new choreography and new clothing changes. She didn’t take a break. She revamped her tour to include her new album. Even when she’s not seen “working”, she’s still working very hard. That’s why she’s so good at her craft. Dedication, blood, sweat and a lot of tears. She doesn’t buy any songs from other writers because she doesn’t need to, like Beyoncé or Nikki both do. They each have dozens and dozens of writers on standby. Beyonce and her husband have even stolen songs from people who have come forward to say what happened. A new person to the industry would go to Jay-Z to try to get a song(s) picked up. He would pass on their song, tell the person ”no” and guess who is singing that song shortly afterwards? That’s some backhanded stuff right there. Taylor is a genius songwriter/lyricist who plays her own instruments and puts on one heck of a concert. A full 3.5 hours with no intermission. She is truly a good person. Humble, sweet, caring, dedicated, loves to help others and showcase others. Seeing others happy makes her happy. Taylor can go in nearly every genre. It’s so funny because I am the same way. Never really listen to her and got sucked into an algorithm last summer with Eras Tour. Some songs I never really appreciated, some songs, I didn’t realize were hers, but the more I listen, the more I love her. And for some reason I get really teary-eyed even if it’s not a sad song. (Vids of her giving the 22 hat do me in!) It’s really fun watching Kellz react to her.

A few years later, Kayne and Kim K illegally recorded a phone call with her about his song Famous. He called her a Bit@$ and made a nude mannequin in her likeness. They said she agreed to the lyrics, she did not. They made her look like a liar and nearly destroyed her career with social media trending # taylorsoverparty and snake emoji's 🐍🐍🐍🐍. She was gone for a year. Then a few years later the entire call was released showing Taylor was telling the truth all along and they were the lying snakes. Her lyrics are full of metaphores, double and triple entendres and literary references, so to the casual listener they may not understand the depth and multilayeres of her lyrics and multiverse because it is just too clever and deep.

She is so prolific, that she always has a new album coming out and so is always in the competition. Writing songs is hard. Writing good songs is harder. That's why most artists have a team of writers and producers. Not Taylor. She's written every lyric in every song on every album - most of them music and lyrics. Lately she's collaborated with Aaron Dessner from The National to showcase his talents and bring him out of obscurity where he'd been for 10 years before working with Taylor. It's hard for artists who's albums are good to win over her because her albums are simply better songs and better writing. She hasn't won album of the year three times for nothing. What people are grumbling about is "Hey she's won enough awards, give someone else a chance." That's not how life works. People who are more talented will always beat less talented people, whether we're talking Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jorden in basketball, Wayne Gretsky in hockey, the black gymnast Simone Biles or any of the athletes who win their gold medals fairly in the Olympics. "Should she still be on the top TOP"? Yes.....because she DOESN'T just release regular pop music. That's her whole thing! She has ERAS. Her back catalogue is incredibly diverse: country, pop, EDM, R&B influenced, indie folk and experimental synth. Having an opinion is all well and good but your friend sounds like a fool going on about the illuminati and her supposedly un-deserved success. No one works harder than Taylor. I know he didn’t mean to be hurtful when he made the “Illuminati” comment. From an outsider’s perspective, I can understand why he wasn’t sure why Taylor is still relevant. If you’re not familiar with her catalog, you don’t realize what a wide range of genres she has covered. The thing about Taylor is that she works extremely hard, she’s super versatile (meaning, she can do so much more than just pop), and she’s super relatable. Her music is literally the diary to her life… yet it’s so relatable to mostly everyone to listens. That’s why people feel like they know her, like she’s their best friend… even though they’ve never actually met her. Her genres also switch up, depending on the season of her life. She started out country, which is reminiscent of her teenage singer/songwriter years. Then she moved into pop, and then into folk, and now she’s currently in her folky-pop era. She’s had to reinvent herself so many times to stay at the top of her game. She talks all about this stuff in her documentary, Miss Americana. It really gives you insight into who she is and what she’s gone through, both personally and professionally (especially at the hands of the media, all the Kim/Kanye stuff, etc.). But at the core of all this… it’s her lyrics. Timeless. Relatable. Vulnerable.

Taylor forgave him, wrote a nice song to show she forgave him, and then Kanye & Kim K screwed her over with the ‘bitch’ comment in his song and an edited phone call. Her latest album has a Kim K diss track called ‘thanK you aIMee’. The letters are capitalized that way on purpose.
Also, like others have said, Taylor is still on top because she works her ass off and she’s probably the greatest lyricist of her generation. She’s put out music in a lot of genres. People who only know her for what’s been played on the radio don’t really know her work.
She is one of the hardest and most driven artist around. She wrote 3 albums during the Covid Shutdown. Once things started returning to normal, she had 3 albums ready to go! Another thing that makes her stay current is that she is awesome to her fans. She is a genuinely lovely person inside and out. Also, she puts out an awesome concert!

One of the things that sets her apart from other artist is that she writes her own songs. She has even written songs for other artists. Some of her best songs do not get radio play.
Kanye called Taylor ---- asked her to release his album on her social media to her fans; then he got into the lyrics of a song about her (Famous). It was 2015; she had just won the album of the year at the Grammy Awards for the 2nd time, and finished up her tour for 1989. She declined to put out his music saying some would call it mysoginistic, but didn't tell him to change the lyrics (wouldn't have made any difference, anyway.) Kim recorded the call. It was essentially a business call; Kanye's record sales declined a lot after 808s, while she had sold over a million copies opening week for 3 straight albums (Reputation in 2017 made 4). In the song (as released) he not only calls her a bitch (something she said specifically during the call that she was grateful he didn't -- so of course he added it in) but also that the only reason she was famous was him. Note: her first album (debut, fall 2006) went platinum in 2007 in a year, her second (Fearless, 2008) went platinum in a month and was the most awarded country album ever. So, him taking credit for her fame was what really stuck in her craw; but Kim made it look in the edited call like Taylor approved the whole song (he only gave her one line of it). When she complained about it, every envious moron in the world called her fake, made for TV, can't sing, liar ----- it was on magazines, internet, talk shows. She left the country, did no interviews for a year. No one even knew where she was. In Feb 2016 she did a set at the Formula 1 race in Texas; her last show until she started working on Reputation in 2017. In Feb 2017 she performed a Super Saturday Night concert for DirecTV before the Super Bowl; in the fall, she dropped Reputation. Her first interview wasn't until 2019, about 4 years after the last one, when she was ready to release her Lover album. When she says "cancelled" it was because the hashtag taylorswiftisover was the number one trend on Twitter for months.

I appreciate and respect that she took all this negativity and made it into her success, quite badass

I think when you have only listened to a small amount of her music you may have a harder time to get it. Like this song is a good song... however you haven't heard her songs yet that really show you her deep songwriting ability. Her new album is full of that example. Now unlike a lot of other artists she writes her songs. She may have one or two people credited for writing on a song but not dozens.... she writes them. She has videos on UA-cam that are making the song videos that show you her process. She doesn't win every year at all. Last year she did win album of the year but if you listen to that album you can see it. Sonically midnights is a great album. Now that you have seen some of her live performances maybe dive into some of her best songs that showcase that songwriting. "My tears ricochet from the long pond sessions is great and all the songs that are done from the long pond sessions she talks prior to the song how the song came to be and what it is about. That new album has songs like "LOML" and "so London" very deep songs. So so many she has

More so than the mic-grabbing incident was when Kanye had Kim release an illegally recorded and edited video of him seemingly asking permission for him to release a song in which he mentioned Taylor. The true lyrics were "I feel like me and Taylor might still have a*x. Why? I made that b**** famous!" On the call, he only mentioned the "having s*x" part but not that he would be calling her that word or claiming he made her famous. When the song dropped, Taylor said it was misogynistic for him to say that and then Kim dropped the video which had been edited to look like Taylor had given the "OK" to the lyrics. Millions of people were sending Taylor threats and calling her horrendous things, and she almost completely disappeared. Years later, the full unedited video came out, showing Taylor had been telling the truth, but by that point she had already been torn apart needlessly by society. Neither Kim nor Kanye have ever commented on the authentic video nor made any attempt at apologies.
Edit: also, Taylor has graciously lost to several artists and has actually come out to speak against "fans" who have tried to hate on someone for winning over her, saying that she knows they deserve the award. On one of her documentaries, when she realized one of her albums was not nominated for an award, her initial reaction was "I need to work harder and do better, and the next album will be better". She puts in the work for it always, and that's why so many artists respect her.
I honestly implore your friend to do a little more digging into Taylor Swift, her discography, her writing and her history. She doesn’t win awards because of her name.
She wins awards because of the work she puts in to writing, production, and yes, promotion. She was signed at 15 with Sony as a songwriter, youngest person to be signed as such. At the age of 19, she wrote the entire album Speak Now by herself. She writes all of her songs either by herself, or with 1-2 collaborators. She plays guitar. She plays piano. She’s extremely talented. She’s put out 11 original albums and 4 re-recorded albums since 2006. Her music spans multiple genres from country to pop to folk and genres in between. People only know the radio hits (which are legitimate country and pop perfection songs, and hits for a reason) and nothing else about her/the rest of her music, and make inaccurate judgements. The more you know about her and her music and her activism for artist rights…the more you can appreciate her.

Kim went on a public rant with the edited phone call and calling her a liar and tons of derogatory names “to help her husbands’ good name stay intact”. She is literally on a world tour right now, released an album with 31 songs in April and a music video in May, then came back to the tour after a “2 month break” and her tour set list had been changed along with new choreography and new clothing changes. She didn’t take a break. She revamped her tour to include her new album. Even when she’s not seen “working”, she’s still working very hard. That’s why she’s so good at her craft. Dedication, blood, sweat and a lot of tears. She doesn’t buy any songs from other writers because she doesn’t need to, like Beyoncé or Nikki both do. They each have dozens and dozens of writers on standby. Beyonce and her husband have even stolen songs from people who have come forward to say what happened. A new person to the industry would go to Jay-Z to try to get a song(s) picked up. He would pass on their song, tell the person ”no” and guess who is singing that song shortly afterwards? That’s some backhanded stuff right there. Taylor is a genius songwriter/lyricist who plays her own instruments and puts on one heck of a concert. A full 3.5 hours with no intermission. Each “era” has different costumes for everyone on stage and they have about 2-5 minutes to change. It’s crazy, it’s down to a science and everyone leaves happy.
Taylor is dedicated AF. She is truly a good person. Humble, sweet, caring, dedicated, loves to help others and showcase others. Seeing others happy makes her happy. Taylor can go in nearly every genre. She plays 8-10 instruments and has a hand in every music video and her concert stages. She started in country and now she’s no longer “pop”. She’s a variety of genres and it keeps her fresh.

Unless you have listened to the albums she’s winning these awards with, spent time truly listening to her lyrics and production, then you are hating for the reason to hate. She is the best songwriter of our generation. She wouldn’t be selling out stadiums with 70-90 thousand people 3-6 nights in a town in each city she visits, if she didn’t deserve it. Also, she isn’t just pop… she has albums in several different genres of music. And her fans range from children to elderly.
