"He's a legend?" The word legend can't even begin to describe how monumental Jack Charlton was to the Irish people. Jack was so revered in Ireland that when he went into a department store to buy something, he would sometimes write a check. But the store cashiers would pay for the items themselves and keep the check as a souvenir.

Jack was also an expression of how much us ordinary English folk do love the Irish, their culture and their country. Some of us also appreciate enough history to know why why the feeling might not always be mutual. But I for one am glad he brought so much joy to repay some of the hurt. RIP Big Jack.

I was only 8 during the World Cup ‘94, so, my memories are vague but, I’ll never forget a neighbour bringing her big (fat back) telly out onto the field across from us when played against Italy, had to use about 3 or 4 extension leads just to make it reach, but there was somewhere between 50 to 100 of us, all watching the match on that field on that great sunny day in Ballyfermot! Adults with their beer, kids with their sweets and lemonades, after the win we’re just kept singing ‘Ole Ole Ole’ over and over again! We were all part of Jackies army!!
    Go fishin Jack! RIP!

You have every right to call him an Irish legend. A working class Geordie lad who fell in love with Ireland and its people and became an honorary Irish citizen. Something he was extremely proud of. His humble background was no different to any other working class lad who followed Irish football and I think they knew that and that’s why they saw him as one of their own.
Rest now Jackie boy. God will never make another like you.
      From a Brit.

When I was a boy in Dublin I'd watch the World Cups and think how amazing it would be if Ireland could ever play in one. I thought it'd never happen, until big Jack took over. It was a great time to be Irish in early 1990, knowing we were going to finally take part in a World Cup, the whole country was lit up with anticipation. And it was beyond amazing when the competition began, it was complete hysteria, nothing else mattered but Ireland in the World Cup, nobody wanted it to end.
RIP Jack, thanks for giving me some of the finest days of my life.

Sean with all due respect, and I know you mean well, but politicians should never be mentioned in the same breath as Jack Charlton. Jack was as genuine as genuine could be. Politicians are...... well.........

Micheal Martin at 2.11 kinda lowered the tone of the piece but to be fair, Jack Charlton became one of us. At that time and place, that took some doing! He was an amazing man who gave the Irish hope and memories. RIP Jack

RIP Jack. He found players with Irish connections who wanted to play for Ireland, and were proud of there Irish roots. That's alright. Declan rice and jack grealish weren't proud of their roots.
