I enjoy Christine being there with you and asking all the questions I have too in her way helping me learn too and I bet she is helpful keeping you safe
Great job getting the old Square body running. She runs great! But we are missing Christina today! She is an awesome helper! Many blessings to you both.
Richard, it takes a pretty big man to openly admit to making a mistake. That just proves to us that you are human and you don't put yourself in the realm of many "I'm perfect" UA-camrs.
That must have been a fast truck. I have only seen one other squarebody with an Olds 455, and that was the one parked in an old Sinclair station from the closed tow yard video.
Thanks very much Terry. This was turned out more difficult than I thought it would be. That pickup coil has in and out, so it was a head-scratcher for a while.
Hi Richard ! I wouldn't feel to bad about that little goof. If you have fiddled with cars long enough , sooner or later it's going to happen. You are just in a special circumstance that you get to share it with all of us ! Makes ME feel better about the bone head things I've pulled ! Lol lol lol. When you mentioned the exhaust headers...ummm I was never a big fan. The burnt plug wire is a prime example. Not to mention , they can destroy starters....and when they do , it can make getting them off a chore ! One guys opinion , just not a fan. But BIG FAN of your videos !! Hello to Christina ! Bless ya both !
Its awesome that its just you & the truck 1 0n 1 mano a mano. Killer that you got it going the sound of the truck firing off is just awesome & the other peaceful noise in the back ground the wind. The new idea of not having Mrs. C around is just awesome to you & the video camera again is just awesome how you explain every thing as your doing it is the best thing I think. Keep up the good job sir. PEACE OF MIND no women around.
I never knew it was so easy to change the distributor until I watched utube! Yall make things look so easy! lol 🤣😂 I might try it myself after the information I’ve learned here! 👌🏻👍🏻 I guess being 64 years old and retired I can learn anything these days, just don’t have the ability to do much anymore! 🤷🏼
Hey Richard, I first want to say the I like that you are honest about anything that may happen and we all have made an error when work on a car. But this old truck is really nice and you did a great job getting her rolling again. You and Christina take care!!
I really like the 73-87 GM pickups. Dependable, reliable and easy to fix. And of course, great styling! Excellent job getting this GMC running again, Richard!! Thanks for sharing!
I’m not a mechanic but I learn more from yall every video my friend! Utubers are a great source of information to me! On a number of different things! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Good save Richard!!! I owned a 1987 square body for about 13 years. It bought it used with about 20,000 miles on it and it was still running good when I traded it in at about 196,000. Never gave me any problems. It was a K10 and was the last year of the straight axle 4WD.
Richard, a fusible link burned out in my Valiant in the charging circuit. The problem was, Plymouth put it right near the connector that goes through the firewall and it burned into that connector. So,, yeah. Thanks to the engineers at Plymouth that didn't think to put it in a more open location, heaven forbid! I used an old soldering gun, to melt away the connector plastic, and solder in a fuse holder. I used a 50 amp fuse. That car ran for at least 5 more years until it was driven into a tree by whoever owned it after me.
Hi Richard how are you I hope Christine is doing well didn't see her on the video. Another great video I always look forward to your videos keep up the great work.
I'll just about guarantee that bearing growl noise is in the rearend. And I will bet its either a pinion bearing or a carrier bearing. Anyway, that's a pretty sweet truck! Good job getting her going again. She's definitely worthy of some brake work and diagnosis/repair of the rearend bearing! Take care, Richard. Stay cool, man.
Don't be so hard on yourself. We all have made similar mistakes. Poop happens. But very cool truck and great job getting her going again. Looks like an easy resto. Those custom mufflers look like the old cherry bomb glass packs we used in the 70s and 80s. Love those square bodies.
Your idea of fuse link replaced by max fuse unit is the best route. On Chris craft boats with GM engines (Inboard and I/O units,) That were put into winter storage had the same wiring. In Colorado mountain lake areas we had plenty of pack rats who nibbled on wires doing pretty much the same effect shorting wires as reverse battery installation. Bet you from now on check which wire goes to ground. Don't feel bad. When jump starting a snow plow Dodge with positive ground battery(frozen solid) wound up exploding while on 100 amp battery charger. Sent everyone in marina running. Took all year for me to live that mistake down. Great video.
-- Did you guys ever experiment around by applying pepper spray to the wiring of your vehicles? The last time I checked, there are purpose built sprays made from particularly nasty peppers of which rodents despise. The idea is that you coat your wiring or anything else you do not wish rodents to eat and they simply reject it due to the taste and hotness of it. I suppose it might not be much unlike bear spray. Anyway, the idea is that the spray doesn't hurt the wiring and the rodents find something else to feast on. - Max Giganteum
An excellent restoration; I'm glad that truck will be put back in service. The only disappointing thing about this video was not seeing Christina in it. I hope she wasn't feeling poorly. Her smile always brightens up the proceedings.
I will be another agree with you on fusible links. They have driven me batty trying to track down what I believed were shorts in wires. Back in the late 1970s through at least the mid 1980s, those links must have cost auto makers practically nothing compared to installing fuse boxes and fuses, because they used them to excess! It might take 30 years, but eventually they fail; sometimes because of high current blowing them out but sometimes due to corrosion eating them away.
G'morning Richard 🤓 . Sorry, for some reason I didn't get notifications for the last couple videos , but I've been a little sidetracked anyway. After driving for about 6 days thru 11 states & 2,600 miles later my wife and I moved from Southwest Idaho to northeast Florida 🙃 ..
@@whattherust G'evening & Thanks ☕☕ 🤓 . We're staying with friends and house-sitting while they're back in Idaho for a couple weeks. We're in Interlachen just outside Gainesville. The population here is about 1500 and we really like it and we're looking for a place of Our Own 🙃 ..
It's ok Richard you're only human and we all make mistakes. I think most of us have done this or at least hooked up jumper cables backwards. At least the fusible link did its job
Ever get a junkyard rig out and discover the color coded battery cables were backwards?? Holy crap..good thing I didn't blow anything up..or maybe that's why it was parked??😂
Saw a comment about someone ragging on Christina, "asking a bunch of questions and irritating the situation." ?? Nah, not in my book. Already knowledgeable, she wants to learn and has done her share of will-it-runs by herself. She makes this channel even more pleasant with she being there. That viewer making that comment wasn't cool. She's got skills, man. She asks questions and points out things, and her and Richard make a great team. Be nice. If ya don't like it, then don't watch. Turn off your device and go fly a kite..😐

I bought a brand new 1984 Chevy Silverado but mine was brown and beige with brown interior and was loaded and it was a great truck back then and never gave us a bit of trouble.
-- Back then, GM couldn't even get a single color right! You obviously don't remember the GM paint fiasco from the early to mid-80s all the way up to the early to mid-90s. Ironically, the truck you were working on in this video looks like it too suffers from the GM paint fiasco... that would be the one where their paint jobs were flaking off all over the place on all the vehicles that GM built back in that time period. I won't go into the history of it here as folks can read up on that part of GM history in many places on the WWW. GM lost a lot of followers (not to mention money!) due to that mess... - Max Giganteum

You're right about those old Chevy hoods. However I've found the 81-87 no where near as problematic as 73-80. Keep on Rockin' with your videos. 😁
True. GM finally figured that out, about the hoods, and made the appropriate improvements.

Agreed. While the diff backlash is fine, it did sound like a bearing noise back there. Once the brakes are fixed it will be easy to determine.

I put a battery on backwards 1 time on my Vw Jetta luckily the fuse was easy to get too & it didn't burn out my starter

Richard you can take the cam gear off of the old distributor and use that as a tool to line up the oil pump shaft instead of messing with a screwdriver .
Right on. That is a good idea.
Just a quick tech tip those carb. bolts should be tightened to {36 in. pounds or 3 ft. pounds}. Great vid loved it !!
Thanks for the tip! 3 foot pounds sounds right.
To check for vacuum leaks, I use a vacuum gouge. If you dont have one, I would get a temperature gun.
I have a 62 ranchero hasn't been on the road since 75
if their wasn't a core on the dist i would take gear off and make a turning tool you need part of the housing for oil pressure so strip the dist and you have a easy line up tool
Right on Howard. That is a good idea.

i have found out that most likely every part of the dist is old and you usually can replace whole unit cheaper that piece by piece
