Howdy Hey! I'm off moving this week but here's a pre-filmed video from my backlog! Also I'm testing out a new "Products" feature for UA-cam so check out that "view products" button in the bottom left of the video!
Hi Hipyo! Could you do a video modding and/or reviewing the onn. rgb gaming keyboard? I have the keyboard and it's my main. I would love to hear your opinion on it!
My gripe with the whole clone/authentic debate honestly comes down to availability. If GMK Olivias were readily available, you bet your ass I'll get them. But if I had to pick between paying 300+ msrp for a set because I missed out on a GB from a few years ago, yeah, sorry. I'm just going to go with the clones. A lot of the clones don't have the novelties so it just becomes a colourway. Just my opinion ofc and I'm sure people are very heated about authenticity vs clones and supporting the original creators, but if there's a demand and there's no supply, something's gotta give.
If you're buying 2nd hand you're not supporting the creator anyway, if it's out of stock it makes no difference to the creator if you buy a genuine 2nd hand or a clone, they won't see the money. I agree that you shouldn't steal novelties, but you can't "own" a colour combo.
Yes I just bought Olivia clones myself as I wanted the color scheme and nice thick ABS double shots. I'm not going to feel guilty because I don't want to wait for another GMK set with similar colors and qualities...
Kinetic's Corn keycap set is certainly not for everyone, but please be sure to let everyone know about them as sometimes you'll mention them to a friend and she yells, "I LOVE CORN" and buys the keycap/deskmat set and loves you forever for letting her know they exist.
The first time it came up I literally thought it was an easter egg or something, slowed down the video playback to 0.25 only to find out it was just a mirrored text, def not cool.
Literally bought MA Profile because of your recommendation half a year ago and they're awesome! They fit really well with Epomaker SK64. Thanks! Your content is always top notch!
Hipyo: explaining that it's better to choose the board and then the keycaps Me, knowing full well my motivation for a build is seeing pretty keycaps and building for those in mind before all else: *interesting*
For any J. R. R. Tolkien Fans out there watching this video, Drop has released a MT3 profile LotR keycap set that looks awesome, i would recommend any fan that is watching the video atm to check it out while is in stock, im building a keyboard for each the Dwarves and Elvish!
My gripe with all the keycap designs is: they all want to be super unique, but completely ignore the huge amount of people that just want to make their normal keyboard sound better without losing anything. Not everyone is into changing key location, losing backlight, losing a massive amount of usable keys or having proper symbols on it that actually have any use for all the keys, where combinations with shift, ctrl, altGr are common. Seriously, I pretty much never see any full-scale keycap sets (and even worse, if you have some additional buttons).
Really looking forward to the clones video lol. I've been changing my mind a lot recently about the whole issue. People tend to get really angry when talking about it and a lot of the nuance gets lost. It tends to turn into an 'us' vs. 'them' type thing, like you either support art theft or you think that everyone should only buy GMK. And of course, the reality is just not like that. I don't support art theft but I also think that GMK and similarly priced sets are too expensive. And a lot of the analysis tends to be overly USA-centric. What's available and affordable in the USA to someone who makes US citizen money is not going to be the same as it is for someone like me who lives in the Philippines and makes Filipino citizen money (it's a lot less). Akko, who makes a lot of clones, is everywhere here because it's affordable and accessible.
If only cloning companies commission the original artist. That would fix the whole debate. Would make life a much more happier place to live in but it doesn't always work that way sadly.
@@Lilyium the question is will designers even consider teaming up with cloners? I imagine that designers will be very unsupportive of the idea since it will not have the "luxury" or "privilege" of being a gmk set. And people will most likely react the same way. So what if it is an original design? It is from a cloner and it isn't GMK. I agree but it is very unlikely it will happen.
@@vectivuz1858 I'm really not knowledgeable on law but it seems like you can "own" colors. There's whole brouhaha with purple as used in chocolate bar packaging involving the likes of Cadbury and Mondelez. And I would imagine that you'd get in trouble for opening a coffee shop chain with dark green branding. It seems to depend on whether it can be argued that you're capitalizing on the influence of the existing brand and whether your brand can be confused for the existing one, which would affect their market. And that can definitely be said for keycap clones although they involve such small players that it's super unlikely that any legal action would ever be taken, which is how cloners continue to exist. But I don't put that much stock into law as basis for morality. A lot of people and companies have gotten away with a lot of evil things. Trump is still a free man. But I do think that these colorways have value and power. They weren't just picked at random. I think they can be considered art. It's certainly not an easy thing to do, making a visually-appealing, thematic, cohesive keycap colorway. Believe me, I've tried. There's design and intent behind it and I do think that that should be protected. And the colorway is the majority of the design appeal of a keycap set. Most of them use the same style of fonts and legending. It seems like people buy them mostly for those colors and not things like the novelties. Some sets don't even have novelties. Sets like Olivia, Nautilus, Night Runner, and the like have built up a strong reputation, appeal, and selling power in the community because of their cohesive, beautiful colorways. And it is this reputation, appeal, and selling power that the cloners exploit when they copy the colorways and even use the exact name of the set in their product listings.
@@CaloysKeyboards To start off the examples you mentioned are with regard to "Trademarks" not "copyright" When it comes to artistic creations which I believe keycaps are, we apply copyright. This is best exemplified by your statement "capitalizing on the influence of an existing brand" That is true, many a trademark infringers motive is exactly this, make a logo/branding/mark similar to that of an existing reputable brand to create confusion or a false link between the infringers products and the reputable brand. As to the statement of a coffee shop with dark green branding, if it is just color then no. If it the proprietor made efforts to disassociate with Starbucks ( I assume that is the brand you are pertaining to) no trouble will come since it will not cause confusion. Now to the question of whether keycap designs the total combination of colorways, legends, etc. is considered "artistic" enough to warrant protection is something I cannot be sure of. To be clear, yes you are right. Not everything legal is moral neither is everything moral, legal in every country. The issue I have is that there are only so many color combinations out there that are aesthetically pleasing, there will come a point that everything has been thought of. As you said "they weren't picked at random". Plus the facts you stated regarding price, availability, different salaries in different countries with different standards of living.
I would have bought the genuine GMK or other high quality keycaps but it's to expensive to our country. It's 1 US Dollar to 4 Ringgit Malaysia. A full GMK keycap set also cost half of my monthly payment. Me as a designer I would like to support other artist if I'm able to so I won't push myself just to get the genuine keycaps.
I got two sets for the price of one from Drop and I'm LOVING the profile (for typing). It seems this week they have some nice discounts set up for those sets for those interested.
Gmk keycaps are a rip-off. $100+ keycaps is way too much and you can better spend that money elsewhere. If you *really* like keyboards and it makes you happy then go for it but for an average person who just wants a good economical keyboard for working there is no reason

Hey hipyo! I know you’re not Amazon’s biggest fan when it comes to keycaps, but would you consider reviewing Mistel PBT keycaps from Amazon? They’re doubleshot, clean looking caps with a few different colour options and are £50 :)
Can you do another video on budget builds? Not for me, but a lot of people cannot get their family to gift them even a $100 keyboard for Christmas. Something like a gk61/61x or sk61 or DH60. Idk I think it may be helpful for a lot of people, especially given it’s the time of year for gift giving
my issue with a lot of these keycap makers (honestly, mostly gmk) is theyre all cherry & they rarely make any other profile. now i dont have a huge issue with that, except a lot of these are just really really boring. a color palette is not a "design". most of them dont have any fun novelties either. there are of course some exceptions like the gmk vaporwaves, but im Extremely dissapointed with the gmk zooted keycaps.. they could have been way more creative. i can totally look past cherry as long as the design is actually interesting. i have the polycaps candy shops & theyre amazing. goblintechkeys has more interesting designs too. just wish we could step away from cherry even a little bit lol
Is there any shine through spherical keycaps. Also do they have in cherry and OEM profile?. Been looking in the internet, thanks in advance for the info.
I'm probably getting a Rudy clone, but that's just because I got in on R2 of Rudy and my Vega should (hopefully) arrive before the end of the year, meanwhile, my keycaps won't until the end of next year.
Hello from New York City! Can custom keycaps be used with an old keyboards or it is recommended to buy a new mechanical keyboard? For example: using a vintage Packard Bell 5139 keyboard now. Is there a way for a newbie to start using keycaps with the OEM keyboard they already have? Thank you for informative video.
Buying a clone really isn't any different than buying a price hiked set off mechmarket, in that neither is sending your money to the creator. But one is the obviously smarter move for your wallet...
This is my first build, and originally I was gonna go with GPBT Celestial Fire keycaps, and then I found out they were clones, so to be completely honest I’m watching this video to find different keycaps.
Howdy hey, hip I'm more frustrated than ever after watching this video. Just started my first custom build project. I never knew a friggin keycap was important. I figured ten keyless (for me), wireless, hot swappable, compatible quiet switch, PBT double shots compatible with. KB/switch and good customization on RGB. But noooooo hipiyo says keycaps are important, grrrrrrrrrrr. This project budget was $250, now it's looking like alot more. I don't want an alien looking keyboard just quiet, versatile, well lighted and conservative.
there is a very alarming lack of proper reviews for resin 3D printed keycaps. I want to know if those are good, I want to make my own sometime soon, but I might have to make my own makeshift injection molding machine

Hey hipyo! I know you’re not Amazon’s biggest fan when it comes to keycaps, but would you consider reviewing Mistel PBT keycaps from Amazon? They’re doubleshot, clean looking caps with a few different colour options and are £50 :)
Real gamers don't use keycaps.
Hi! Can you recommend a brand that makes keycaps with Cyrillic layout also ?
I got some good looking ones for my first build on etsy but I would lovee to know if this is a trust worthy website! Ty for reading
I ordered first amazon keycap set literally a week ago.
Got these keycaps for my first build a few months back :P
You post this just as I'm getting 24karat keycaps...... dude
Thanks for making this informative videos. Just my 2 cents, I think the mirrorred words are q confusing.
Apart from that, thanks for this vid!
I bought the Coral Sea and I'm happy
I’m makeing a gk61 with lavender switches it’s my first custom keyboard it’s gonna look so cute 😁
Howdy hey Hipyo! Can you please test the idobao black Sakura keycaps sometimes?
Hipyo: you dont need $400 keycaps
Me: just bought gmks last month… *hides in shame*
my issue with a lot of these keycap makers (honestly, mostly gmk) is theyre all cherry & they rarely make any other profile. now i dont have a huge issue with that, except a lot of these are just really really boring. a color palette is not a "design". most of them dont have any fun novelties either. there are of course some exceptions like the gmk vaporwaves, but im Extremely dissapointed with the gmk zooted keycaps.. they could have been way more creative. i can totally look past cherry as long as the design is actually interesting. i have the polycaps candy shops & theyre amazing. goblintechkeys has more interesting designs too. just wish we could step away from cherry even a little bit lol
You say "don't need to buy" but what if I wanna?
Please go over the different profiles and for different uses
Who else is stay up all night/morning to see this!?!?
I love the text animations lol
Is there any shine through spherical keycaps. Also do they have in cherry and OEM profile?. Been looking in the internet, thanks in advance for the info.
Hipyo! Gateron Milky Yellow or Akko Matcha Green?
Lol wathing this to help me build my redragon k556 that im putting in ktt kang whites and now im looking for some good caps with deep sounds
“So you dont have to wait six months” imagine buying a GMK redacted in 2019 and it still hasnt been shipped.
funny :) lol
I'm probably getting a Rudy clone, but that's just because I got in on R2 of Rudy and my Vega should (hopefully) arrive before the end of the year, meanwhile, my keycaps won't until the end of next year.
Hello from New York City! Can custom keycaps be used with an old keyboards or it is recommended to buy a new mechanical keyboard? For example: using a vintage Packard Bell 5139 keyboard now. Is there a way for a newbie to start using keycaps with the OEM keyboard they already have? Thank you for informative video.
Hipyo I’m planning on making a keyboard using razor red switches. What type of keys should I get and what keyboard frame
should I get
Buying a clone really isn't any different than buying a price hiked set off mechmarket, in that neither is sending your money to the creator. But one is the obviously smarter move for your wallet...
pay +100 dollars and wait months to buy bullshit abs because it's original, no thanks 😂
Hipyo, your the best!
Ordered some whale keycaps from kinetic labs late last week and they should be delivered by this weekend.
The idobao keycaps and id80 sound great together
This is my first build, and originally I was gonna go with GPBT Celestial Fire keycaps, and then I found out they were clones, so to be completely honest I’m watching this video to find different keycaps.
Thank you dearest Chairman of the keyboards!
While GMK continues to rip the consumer off, i have no worries about buying their clones

Opinion on royal flush gaming keycaps? Company started a year ago
there is a very alarming lack of proper reviews for resin 3D printed keycaps. I want to know if those are good, I want to make my own sometime soon, but I might have to make my own makeshift injection molding machine
I'm about to work on my 2nd keeb!
Why dose it say to buy in 2023 but this was uploaded 2 years ago and it’s 2023 now?
