As someone working in finance, not having a numpad is a total dealbreaker, it’s almost as bad as not using a real mouse and just sticking with a laptop trackpad 🤦♂️
Same. I don’t understand how people can live without it! I’ve never worked in finance, but I used to field calls for a doctor’s office for several years, and typing in someone’s birthday when they say it super fast is impossible without the numpad. If you just use the row of numbers at the top, the / key is on the other side of the keyboard. But with the numpad, it’s just right there and you can type 01/01/2000 for example, so much faster than on a keyboard without a numpad. Numpads are fantastic and I don’t understand why people don’t like them!
Honestly curious what do people mainly use 40% for? Gaming I use the numbers for a lot of actions. Games like osu you only use few keys so that’s an option I guess until the wooting uwu. Typing if you never use numbers but I just don’t see the desk space saved justifying that bare minimum but lot of things in life aren’t practical its about being different
epomaker has a solid gasket mounted Seperated one now for 40 USD you should check out :D. i hope it suits your needs if you wana check out other layouts
The other week, I finally bought my first custom keyboard. I used your old guide saying the V series was a solid first one. (I didn't have the money for the Q or I probably would have gotten it) And everything's been put together, and the difference between my old Corsair and this is night and say. It sounds and feels so much better. People like you also taught me to try out non-cherry switches and I learned the reason I liked Blues wasn't the clickyness, but the weight. And now I have a lovely weighty tactile that I'm typing on. Not sure I'm into thocc, I like Clack a bit more, but still, people like you helped it out, and it wasn't that painful. Pretty easy and fun. (If I ever find out they're doing another run of the Zoom TKL tho I may go for that as a fun side board)
I am in spreadsheets all day and need a number pad as well. However I have a separate mechanical pad that I have on the right side of where I put my mouse. Meaning my mouse is in the middle. I find I have less strain on my wrist using the pad at a different angle so I really like this setup over an all in one board
I would like to see a lot more 100% keyboards but with the shape of the Cherry g80-1800. At the same time, we benefit from a shorter (but wider) keyboard and 100% of the keys.
Im with you Stephen. I need all of the buttons. I bought a K95 back when they had both numpad and 18 G-keys. And yes, I use them. I program them for all the different games I play and color code them. Never a single regret. In fact, I bought two boards. One with Reds, and one with Browns. Part of my command station, surrounded by electronic real estate... and numpads.
Tip about keycaps: if you have a numpad, make sure the numpad caps are included with the keycap set. If not, make sure to order the additional kit for numpad keys.
Hey {{3}}! Thanks for your comment. I completely agree with you. Numpad caps are often overlooked when it comes to keycap sets. It's definitely worth double-checking if they're included or considering ordering the additional kit. By the way, have you ever heard of the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule? It's an amazing tool for keeping your desk clean and maintaining your hardware. Worth checking out! 🖥🔧
Hey there! As a fellow tech enthusiast, I can vouch for the benefits of the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule. It's a handy tool for keeping your desktop and other spaces clean. With its powerful vacuuming and blowing capabilities, along with its compact size and versatile accessories, it's definitely worth considering for your cleaning routine. Plus, it's reasonably priced compared to other brands. Cheers! 🖥🔧
It's got to be full size, all the way! I built my first keyboard last year and went with a the (fully functional) LTC NB1041 Nimbleback Wired Mechanical Keyboard for $75. Then I upgraded to Gateron Ink v2 Black pre-lubed 5pin linear switches (60g Force), added some thick o-rings for extra THOCKINESS and noise dampening, then topped it all off with PBT (instead of cheap ABS) XDA Profile Keycaps in a lovely set of colors that matched my PC setup. I did it all for about $170 and I love every minute of my time with this board! Edit: the o-rings went on the keycap stems, not the switches. And I also bought a switch tester and a couple sample packs of switches first to get what I wanted after trying them out.
96% gang, I went with the Q5 because it still has a num pad (which I use daily) but gets rid of some of the navigation keys that I never use, perfect size IMO
The one thing stopping me from getting into customs are the lack of options for full size/with numpad and function key keyboards. Those are non negotiable for almost every day use.
I tried using a keyboard without a num pad for 2 years, I really tried, but I had to get one with a numpad again. Also if you need a german ISO Layout your options are VERY limited. Keychron to the rescue if you have patience that the right model becomes available!
Just bought the same keyboard and did the same mods. I have cherry red switches. It sounds amazing. Ironically, I was also using an old Razer blackwidow and so the upgrade is incredible. Thank you, Hipyo!!!!
I'm reevaluating my keyboard needs and I'm in full binge mode on your videos. One complication is that I type in dvorak. I didn't even realize that my keys weren't uniform until I moved them around and I was like ... that doesn't look right. But what I really miss are the home row "pointer goes here" bumps. My first thought (after seeing that all dvorak-specific keycaps I could find are not 'cute') was that I'd get unlabeled keys and then print/cut stickers on clear sticker paper for the keys. After seeing some side-print keycaps, I was like "oh I could get those, let qwerty users still see their labels, and have my own labels. Now I'm wondering if the keys would feel better to the fingers than the stickers, and if I should get normal keys and put the label on the side profile. I can feel some analysis paralysis coming on 😅
Keychron Q6 + Durock Dolphin Silent switches + Keychron PBT doubleshot cherry MX profile keycaps FTW! (2 keyboards with the same specks for home and office and only the keycaps colours differ between the two) AND I love them! I tried the noisy switches and I do have 3 full sets of them at home but they drive me up the wall! 100% keyboard squad unite!
I love my numpads too and this is why I use the Keychron Q5, which is 96% (also called 1800 by other brands) and it's a reduced footprint while maintaining the numpad. I have bought more than 100 keyboards in last 10 years and the Q5 is my ideal keyboard, so much that I got a lighter V5 (plastic) for my business trips.
I really like 96% too, but I ended up buying the full size V6 because I thought it would be easier to get keycaps for. And because I want to teach my son what a real keyboard is after he's only used laptops.
I picked up a Q2 the other week in the UK ISO layout with linears (the knob one), there are tonnes in stock if you stop around. Picked up mine from keyboardco.
Recently bought a q1 with gateron oil kings and kfa pbt white on navy keycaps, i will never go back to a gaming board ty hipyo for opening my eyes to this amazing hobby, despite it leaving me penniless.
This video was genuinely so helpful as someone who has an OG Razer Ornata, that has been going strong but starting to show some wear and tear from continuous gaming and writing, I'm wanting to build my first custom keyboard (and not break the bank) so this video was really helpful.
I'm picky and gave up finding a perfect keyboard for me a while ago.. But after watching this video I'm convinced that I just need to view my options for building one for myself! :D Cheers!
Picked up a Keychron Q2 with Gateron Red Pro's a few weeks ago as an upgrade from my Ducky Mecha Mini on Cherry MX Browns, wasn't expecting a big difference, but I was absolutely blown away by the Keychron. Its a THOC machine, the linears are far better than the browns and the isolation is fantastic. I'm finding any excuse I can to type, its soooooo nice. Especially when I swapped over my custom double shot PBT key set from my old Ducky, which only added to the THOC by removing some of the higher pitched click from the stock Keychron set.
As a raving clicky fanatic with an open mind, I get the sense from this video that I'd love to hear more Hipyo On Clickies. What do you dislike about them the most; just the racket, or is there more to it than that? Are there any you do kind of like, or at least dislike less than most others? If you *had* to run a set of clickies for a month on your favorite deck, which would they be and why? Or just go on a full-drama hateraide-rant if you literally can't think of any potential up-sides: My bet is it'd be fun & informative regardless. Also, 96/1800 layouts are really nice options for people who Must Have Tenkey for work-specific functionality but still want something nice and compact & maybe less pedestrian-looking than a traditional full-size. Turns out I don't miss my Lock/Pause and *especially* Ins keys at all.
Got myself a Q3 at home, but needed numpad at work. Q6 to the rescue! Paired with Gazzew U4 switches and Keychron Iceberg caps. No pre-travel, great bump and silent stem, in both directions. (U4Tx for dampened top, and U4T if you want THOCK) Most silent keyboard in the office (by far), and i can use the palm-rest to get rid of pesky co-workers if they get to close.
You'd be shocked how many people need numpads. My partner doesn't get how I can use a 65% keyboard without one. I never use it but for the work he does he uses it all the time so I can see why your friend prefers having one
Having watched this vid, I just finished building my own _Keychron Q6._ I'd already picked the Q6 because, a) it's metal, b) ISO UK layout and c) keypad. For mine I'm gonna be using it for gaming, so I opted for linear switches, so I bought a set of _Gateron Box Ink V2s_ pre-lubed and filmed. I also got a set of _Ghost Judges Black Shimmer Cherry PBT Doubleshot_ keycaps. I applied the same mods, specifically the force break mod, PCB tape mod and instead of Kilmat, I opted for some Mass Loaded Vinyl to do the same job. Turned out a treat. So much thock.
your channel inspired me to build my own keyboard! im waiting on some of the things to come in but so far i love it, thank you for getting me into the hobby!!! i can 100% say it was fun :D
But the keychron Q6 already has force break built in. There's rubber there, you missed it. At 15:04 you can see the rubber on either side of the screw holes.
I have a keychron v3 (plastic version of q3 to save $100) and i couldn't be happier with it. QMK on linux works with standard hid driver, hotswappable, pretty common key layout, love it
To those who just bought a Q6 pro. The insides are very different. The battery is actually on the side where the killmat goes. It would be cool if we got a video for the q6 pro cuz im now terrified to mod it. Just going to do the force break and thats it.
Good to know. I just got a Q6 pro a few weeks ago and was looking at the killmat mod. Might just do the electrical tape and force break mod and decide after that about the killmat.
I'm so glad I found this video!! I need a full keyboard for work and it was so hard to see all those cute 75% ones... Now I can go grab this stuff and build my own!
So i built my first keyboard today and used this build as my base, running a Q60max with duhuk matchav4 switches tape mod, kilmat and extra foam and cerakeys this shit sounds amazing thank you so much for the advice and the tutorial.
@@froggotheboi I imagine most data entry people still use a num pad. A good chunk of the gamer/mechanical keyboard nerd club don't have any use for them though. It's all about desk space to them.
Nah ! I'm a programmer, use numbers all day (doing mathematics) … and instead of having a physicl numpad, I just made a Layer on my keyboard with numbers. This way, I can access my numpad without moving my arms. That's way more comfortable ! Less movements, and less space on my desk.
I get that some folks only need WASD and space for pretty much anything they do on a computer. But a numpad is immensely helpful for many applications outside of CS:FortGrounds. Plus, fullsize keyboards are more comfortable than the squished-down alternatives.
You're right, I don't need a gaming keyboard... and I've been very happy with a Keychron instead. V1 or Q65, with Durock T1 switches and MT3 or AF SA caps. Would love if they made a V65, since I love the "69%" layout but prefer their simpler / thinner / cheaper plastic V models over the heavier / more complex Q models. Is that heresy?

Finally, a ANSI101 104 layout on this channel! I know you were gas lighting him as a joke, but FYI (for others). That Razer keyboard in the beginning is known as a 100% keyboard because it has all of the keys the the IBM Model M (ANSI101 if you're American) established The "Numpad" is also referred to as a "10-key" referring to the keys 0-9. Take that away and you're left with ~84% Between the numpad and alphabetical keys, include "Page Up", "Del," "End" and so on, referred as the "Nav Cluster" which does not include the arrow keys. Take that away and you're left with ~75% I can live without a numpad, but is as a touch typer, I have come to realize my nav cluster is precious to me
I agree with your friend some of us to work we need the num pad, I recently went with a Mechanical for the first time and 96% keyboard is the best bro shouldve gotten a 96%
The only issue I see with stuffing the keyboard is that the Q keyboards, as far as I know, have a sort of floating PCB that sits on gaskets. So the PCB moving is a feature. By cramming in foam and stuffing the case, you are eliminating that movement.
I can totally be without the dedicated arrow and function keys, I can remap them if I really need to, but a numpad is a must. Sound profile is completely irrelevant because I use a headset 100% of the time, even when not gaming. The biggest issue with using the same keyboard for work (typing) and gaming is that for typing I want tactile and a decent amount of top actuation force to avoid typos, but for gaming I want linear and barely any top actuation force for minimum latency.
I have an Iqunix OG80 with TTC speed silver. I wanted a numpad as well, so I bought one of those $200 Logitech boards. I couldn't go back to cheap mech keys, so now I have an Epomaker independent numpad next to the OG80. P.S. If your electrical tape doesn't say "3M 33+" on the inside you've made a mistake. The 33 doesn't leave slime behind if you leave it on for more than a year.
As someone who isnt super into keyboard building. I kinda cant fathom so many people not bothering with a numpad or disliking them that it would silverly limit your options for customizations. Its one of the most common keyboard sizes in like the "real world" so to speak. (Also im biased because i prefer to have a numpad) that just kinda sounds like a skill issue
If you're modding a Keychron Q6, you might not need the dynamat at all. I tried with and without dynamat and the dynamat made the keyboard louder overall, despite the reduction in ping.
I do NOT have the patience to lube 100 switches. Where can I buy Silent Red Linear pre-lubed switches?? Thank you for your help and the great videos :)

There are full size mechanical keyboards available for you guys
@@junaidv1989 oh yes I have a keychron for the office, people are very interested in it, it’s almost like I rocked up with a sports car
Or get the numpad separately 👍
I have to ask tho why do you need a num pad, there are numbers at the top of the keyboard?
“It’s not even a real keyboard” bro offended the whole 40% community 💀
I really have no Problem with that. Why do they even exist (the Keyboards, Not the people)
40% of nothing is still nothing
never even knew 40% keyboards existed until just now
angry 40% noises (they cant even type half this message) 1234567890
Honestly curious what do people mainly use 40% for? Gaming I use the numbers for a lot of actions. Games like osu you only use few keys so that’s an option I guess until the wooting uwu. Typing if you never use numbers but I just don’t see the desk space saved justifying that bare minimum but lot of things in life aren’t practical its about being different
I'm with Stephen! I use the numpad all the time and it's crazy to me how people seem to love not having one!
epomaker has a solid gasket mounted Seperated one now for 40 USD you should check out :D. i hope it suits your needs if you wana check out other layouts
3:12 "It's not even a real keyboard" is truly the moment when a keyboard nerds gets absolutely pwned by people with actual money lmao
I need a numpad. I will never buy a keyboard that doesn't have a numpad. I do way too much in excel to not use a numpad.
Agree
I am in spreadsheets all day and need a number pad as well. However I have a separate mechanical pad that I have on the right side of where I put my mouse. Meaning my mouse is in the middle. I find I have less strain on my wrist using the pad at a different angle so I really like this setup over an all in one board
I don't use excel but keyboards without numpads make me cringe
@@trackno.1875 Honestly I have to remind myself to use the numpad so if I don't have one I won't miss it lol
I would like to see a lot more 100% keyboards but with the shape of the Cherry g80-1800. At the same time, we benefit from a shorter (but wider) keyboard and 100% of the keys.
THANK YOU STEPHEN, NUMPAD ENJOYERS RISE UP
Im with you Stephen.
That was my first mechanical keyboard, too!
And then they started getting rid of all the macro keys. Wtf?! Those keys were so damn useful!
Hipyo really does have the best vibes on UA-cam, man. You just know he's fun and chill to hang out with IRL
I dunno seems like there's some sus shenanigans energy going on there in all the videos with his friends and I'm all for it.
Nah bro Hipyo's idea of fun is lubing switches and building a keyboard from scratch. That's a recipe to send any sane person into a nut house.
Cheers! 🖥🔧
LOVE the energy Stephen brings to this!! Also so glad seeing that random community post suggestion (iirc?) about Kilmat pan out SO great for you both.
Btw killmat is meant to be rolled flat, it performs much better when rolled flat rather than having the bumps on it. Keep up the great videos👍
What does 'rolled flat' mean?
@@Shaderone77 killmat comes with a roller and you're supposed to use the roller to make the mat flat rather than leaving it bumpy
the "bumpiness" is the air pockets that provide the noise insulation. The roller is probably used to make sure it adheres to curved surfaces better.
I love when Hipyo makes unsuspecting victims build keyboards
96% gang, I went with the Q5 because it still has a num pad (which I use daily) but gets rid of some of the navigation keys that I never use, perfect size IMO
1:43 How smart of him to Blur the actual Keyboard but not the recording on His Monitor.
hehe
Is it thock or silent?
I was on the fence about getting this exact keyboard and now im convinced.
Hey just to let you know 96% is also my favorite layout. I feel like there arent too many of us out there! lol
I really like 96% too, but I ended up buying the full size V6 because I thought it would be easier to get keycaps for. And because I want to teach my son what a real keyboard is after he's only used laptops.

4:57 I can feel you : I sent an email last week to Keychron saying all tools are missing from my Q1 Pro box, they answered : under the Quick Guide...
HELL YEAH 100% rep!
Whish I could get a decent one with ISO layout. The Q6 only has the weird small return key version.
It has both normal ISO and JIS versions

Recently bought a q1 with gateron oil kings and kfa pbt white on navy keycaps, i will never go back to a gaming board ty hipyo for opening my eyes to this amazing hobby, despite it leaving me penniless.
I have this exact keyboard and I've wanted to mod it to this level. Awesome video and this has made me much more confident to do this!
I absolutely love the Q series, great board. And I like to see a clean and good full-size board as well :D
And the guide, of course, is great!
Got myself a Q3 at home, but needed numpad at work. Q6 to the rescue!
Paired with Gazzew U4 switches and Keychron Iceberg caps.
No pre-travel, great bump and silent stem, in both directions. (U4Tx for dampened top, and U4T if you want THOCK)
Most silent keyboard in the office (by far), and i can use the palm-rest to get rid of pesky co-workers if they get to close.
I've never really got the whole no num pad thing. I used it all the time so it's a must.
But the keychron Q6 already has force break built in. There's rubber there, you missed it.
At 15:04 you can see the rubber on either side of the screw holes.
Unfortunately it's not enough. It still has case ping. I have a Q6 at work and after doing the force break mod the case ping was gone.
One of the best videos around this subject. Not too nerdy, keeps attention till the end and is kinda funny as well. Keep with a good work guys😊

sorry about that :(
I'm so glad I found this video!! I need a full keyboard for work and it was so hard to see all those cute 75% ones... Now I can go grab this stuff and build my own!
I think the most shocking part of this video was that a Razer Blackwidow lasted 9 years...
I arrived here after my black widow died after 2 years.
Full size keyboard user for life! Great video. Appreciate the numb pad love!
Separate numpad is the move. I got a 75% and wound up liking the numpad on the left so I could still use my mouse/arrow keys with my right hand
Ambidexterous!
So i built my first keyboard today and used this build as my base, running a Q60max with duhuk matchav4 switches tape mod, kilmat and extra foam and cerakeys this shit sounds amazing thank you so much for the advice and the tutorial.
"most people" don't prefer 75% keyboards, just people in this niche little group lol
Gen z gamers don't use numpads as a rule. Millennials and older like myself still like a numpad.
@@orange3203what about programmers and excel users?
@@froggotheboi I imagine most data entry people still use a num pad. A good chunk of the gamer/mechanical keyboard nerd club don't have any use for them though. It's all about desk space to them.
Nah ! I'm a programmer, use numbers all day (doing mathematics) … and instead of having a physicl numpad, I just made a Layer on my keyboard with numbers.
This way, I can access my numpad without moving my arms. That's way more comfortable ! Less movements, and less space on my desk.
thanks for the video! me and my husband are going to follow this to the T for our first build lol Your videos are great!!! :)
I really want to watch this video all the way through but the shaky cam is killing me.

I haven’t had a numpad in like 6 years and have missed it maybe twice? I enjoy the mousing area of my TKL/75% more.
The most shocking thing in the video is a Razer Keyboard lasting 9 years
For what it's worth: I like having a numpad not just for actual number entry, but also because when numlock is turned off it doubles as arrow keys, home/end, *AND* page up/down
i didnt know they had a Q6
Finally, a ANSI101 104 layout on this channel! I know you were gas lighting him as a joke, but FYI (for others).
That Razer keyboard in the beginning is known as a 100% keyboard because it has all of the keys the the IBM Model M (ANSI101 if you're American) established
The "Numpad" is also referred to as a "10-key" referring to the keys 0-9. Take that away and you're left with ~84%
Between the numpad and alphabetical keys, include "Page Up", "Del," "End" and so on, referred as the "Nav Cluster" which does not include the arrow keys. Take that away and you're left with ~75%
I can live without a numpad, but is as a touch typer, I have come to realize my nav cluster is precious to me
I literally just bought a Keychron Qš with a knob - loving it
I agree with your friend some of us to work we need the num pad, I recently went with a Mechanical for the first time and 96% keyboard is the best bro shouldve gotten a 96%
New to the channel. Really enjoyed this video! Loved that the 100% layout was a must-have, as I was starting to think I was crazy :')
The only issue I see with stuffing the keyboard is that the Q keyboards, as far as I know, have a sort of floating PCB that sits on gaskets. So the PCB moving is a feature. By cramming in foam and stuffing the case, you are eliminating that movement.
Yes but you are also removing the echo chamber thereby reducing noise from keypresses.
2:19 Love the little glarses thingy
I've been gaming on an uncustomized Keychron K2V2 Red for a few months and it works for gaming just fine. To me it's a gaming keyboard.
No Clicky switches? *cries in Outemu Blues*
I followed this video step by step and can confirm that these mods make a huge difference. Holy cow
YOU NEED TO MOD AN EXTERNAL NUMPAD HIPYO!!!
Now I want this for a low profile keyboard with slim switches.
Hipyo introduced me to a new world of keeb modding. THANKYOU.
Trying out Keyboars is the best part, i have no idea what keys does boars have, but it does have keyboards in it!
Thanks Hipyo, very happy the KeyTrrrron!
If you're modding a Keychron Q6, you might not need the dynamat at all. I tried with and without dynamat and the dynamat made the keyboard louder overall, despite the reduction in ping.
I just got my Keychron c1, and the stabilizers are well factory over-lubed.
I have his exact same first keyboard as my first keyboard. The Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Edition 2014 still going strong.
